I have an english name, ________ _______ ________. I have a Hebrew name, Shmuel Ben _______.
I have always gone by my English name because I live in Ireland. As a Reform Jew, I pretty much only go to my Reform Temple on Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, and Simchat Torah. However, my mom sometimes calls me by my Hebrew name and at my Jewish school I am called Shmuel in Hebrew class, albeit stiffly with an emphasis on the 'El', Baruch Hashem, rarely fluidly and familiarly by the Rabbi. Still, it's pretty much always my English name.
I debate on the side of religous freedom for Circumcision. I do post quotes from various websites such as milah.net among others. In one of them, it highlights the part of the milah circumcision service when the baby is given his Hebrew name. It was talking about how 'My Hebrew name is my Real name.'
Is it?
Since I've read that quote, I've really been thinking a lot about myself as Shmuel and not as _______.
I've been trying to identify more with 'Shmuel.'
Thoughts?

My English name is not dissimilar to my Hebrew name. In fact, they're almost identical. However, I clicked the English name option because I go by the English version moreso.

Hm- interesting question.
I always go by my English name (actually a nickname because I hate my official legal name.) Only my closest friends even know my Hebrew name, but that's also because I don't exactly live in a place with many other Jews. My Hebrew name also feels somehow arrogant because of its meaning, so other than my grandmas, I don't know anybody who actually calls me by it.
Oh, and my names are vaguely similar, but far from identical.

My English and Hebrew name are similar, but I go by my English name because I'm used to it. No one calls me by my hebrew name unless it is reading out the Batmitzvah certificate.

Name of G-d ('Shem El') Which is it? confused

It sounds more like "listen to G-d!" (shamu or shmu el).
I am investigating.

I just can't get that quote "My hebrew Name is my Real Name" out of my head! I've been thinking about it for a while, and what made me decide to make a thread about it was this website: http://www.isthisyour.name/You type in your name and it gives you cool data. I found out about it on some LD or GD thread... Only... mine didn't match. English: Your personal power animal is the Amazonian Manatee
Your 'Numerology' number is 7. If it wasn't bulls**t, it would mean that you are spiritual, eccentric, and a bit of a loner. Introspective and analytical, you think deeply and prefer seclusion. Hebrew: Your personal power animal is the Hairy-Nosed Wombat
Your 'Numerology' number is 8. If it wasn't bulls**t, it would mean that you are motivated by material success and have an aptitude for business, managerial and financial matters. This comes through your uncommon discipline and persistence. OMG they don't match! gonk I know it's just a dumb site, but it upsets me that I have two names and they don't match...

I also tried the composite I go by in hebrew class where its Hebrew Fist name and English surname...
Your personal power animal is the Mountain Gorilla
Your 'Numerology' number is 5. If it wasn't bulls**t, it would mean that you are adventurous, mercurial, and sensual. You seek growth through adventure and different life experiences. Although you are a critical thinker, you can sometimes over-ponder an issue.
At least two of them could go together, but 3 are just bound to contradict one another.... crying

and now... since I have a DAY OFF (happy yays) let me explain the 2 name thing. Every religion has a holy and a mundane, what is part of the religion, and what is not and why they should be kept separated. The Jewish Religion has a pretty good concept of separating the holy from the mundane. You have two names because you as a person have two lives. (Technically 3 if you count Gaia) So when you're using your normal name, you're doing the mundane things, everyday life, doing everyday things. However, when you identify as Shmuel, it's usually when you're doing something holy. When someone says a prayer for you... a Asher Yatzar for example. They don't use your normal every day name in the prayer, they use your hebrew name. When you're married you put your hebrew name on the Ketubah. And so on and so on. So having a hebrew name and a normal name is just yet another way that we Jews separate out the sacred from the mundane. At least that's how I understand it. PS : From that "This is your name" website... my personal power animal is the Oompa Loompa That's right, my power animal is FICTIONAL and THAT'S goin on mah facebook.
