I'm not sure about you all, but at least twice a day, I'll here someone say "That's so gay". It ticks me off! Like, honestly, do these people even realize how ridiculous they sound? I honestly hope they're just ignorant because then they might change as they become more educated.
Anyway, I was wondering how you fight the "that's so gay" comment. Any clever retorts? Good comebacks?
My good friend and gay rights activist, Marina Gato, told me the BEST comeback ever. A friend was complaining about her mother grounding her. When Marina asked her what she was grounded for, her friend replied "I have no idea.. she's just so gay!" Marina barely paused and then said "Oh really? Well maybe she should get together with my mom!" (For the record, Marina has two moms, one of whom is a world-class wrestler).
I've never been in a situation quite like this, but it boils my blood to hear someone say "that's so gay" or randomly toss around words like "f**" or "dyke". Normally, I just turn to whomever said it and remind them how hurtful and inappropriate it is. But does anyone here have some really good, really funny comebacks? Maybe something for a repeat offender?

Well usually I just come up with stuff on the spot, but some good stuff is like when they say an inanimate object is Gay like "Stupid computer Froze! That's so gay!", I usually say something like "Really? You must be really good with computer's if it told you it's sexuality!" that's kinda lame but it's all I can remember for now.

well, my teacher told me that a kid in her class was like "that video was so gay!" so she was like "no matter how much you want, that video can never be gay. it can never have sex with another video, and it will never be a DVD" i was dying! she says to let them know how stupid they're being. a test can never be gay, a show can never be gay, etc. people are stupid. the "no homo" thing also pisses me off. it's ridiculous!
the GSA at my school is working on the thinkb4uspeak campaign. we plan on making our own commercial and making it a year-long campaign. it kind of is an ongoing project with some people. as long as you have people saying "that's so gay" or "no homo", we'll have to keep trying to explain to them how dumb they're being =p

I just graduated high school, but my school was so backwards that we didn't even have a GSA (majorly disappointing).
Love your story, too, Lost_Forever_Soul. While in high school, I was associate editor of my school newspaper, and I wrote a column about the stupidity behind the anti-gay slurs. Some people reacted well, but others just did it more often as a joke.

And I wish I had some cool High School GSA story but I don't. I live in Lake Stevens where they made this new mid-high for eight and ninth graders so I had to wait a whole extra year to go to high school. Bleh.

Alot.
Like today I said it like....well...lets just say I didn't even bother counting.
Either "that's so gay" or "God, they're so gay"
Actually I was talking about a movie...and the acting in it..and like that was the most of it.
But I say it throughout the day.

hehe, i love GSA! and i wish i could write for our paper. i'm planning on starting an underground one =o
yea, my best friend used to say "that's so lesbian" instead of that's so gay cos i came out sort of. it pissed me off, but now she's much more mature about things i think.

imma be completely honest here so im warning you now, be prepared to hate me. I see it like this, basically. you guys are gay and should be pretty open-minded to toher peope's ways of living. if you're cool with their way of living, though, why not with their way of speaking? that just doesn't make sense to me.
hey, you guys ever heard of slang? it's used, you know, outside of sheltered homes where your mommys and teachers can't protect you from improper english! i know, i know, it sounds scary. people actually use the word "bad" so that it means something good! people throw around words like ni***r and beaner as if it means absolutely nothing! dear god, what has our world come to, right?
people, can we get real for a moment? they aren't saying gay is bad, they aren't saying gay is stupid. they're simply coming up with a different way of saying bad or stupid. why do you take such offense to that? that goes beyond my comprehension and its a bit too defensive for me to think you're serious, honestly.
we have so much more to battle as gay people. why bother working on the way people talk? i mean, what, you want people going around saying, "oh my goodness, that test was so ridiculous and terrible!"? that's retarded. i mean, i dunno about you guys, but if i stepped into my high school one day and heard someone say, "good morning my african american counterpart," i would be scared. it's no big deal that people throw around the word gay. it's just close-minded and stupid to take offense to it. in taking offense, you are no better than those close-minded unaccepting church people who restrict us from marriage and try to limit our rights! don't be hypocrites and don't be overly sensitive. grow up, guys. welcome to the real world.

in regards to the poll, is your hate for this new slang term all because you mistake it for homophobia? i assure you, that's not the case at all.
homophobia is when your mom can't look at you because you're not her little boy/girl anymore.
homophobia is when your friends leave you and you become an outcast to all those you once held dear.
homophobia is reading rude comments on myspace and in chain letters because a few people told the wrong crowd and now they think you're a stupid gay loser.
slang isn't homophobia. f** and dyke are swears. those can reasonably make one upset. however, to be upset simply because someone says "that's so gay" doesn't show retaliation to homophobia, but rather stubborn and misguided anger in which you freak out over the little things instead of caring about the things that actually matter, such as the situations read above and countless other examples (as far as lynching). don't trip cuz language is changing, cuz that only makes you look bad. god

I'm not really offended by it unless they use it continuously within a minute or two. I had a kid in the same room as me while taking the MCAS and he was talking to one of his friends. He said "f**" multiple times in the matter of a couple minutes. I wanted to tell him to shut up and tell him how "gay" he sounded for saying it so much.
My friends use it but not a lot. One of my friends in Bio said it and her friend told her to apologize. It didn't really bother me.
Some kidin one of the English classes said "That's so Gay." The teacher flipped because she's a lesbian and drags him to the hallway to talk to him. Then she goes on this thing about saying white and others of the sort. So we make fun of her for it by saying "That's so White," or "That's so Puerto Rican." I use it to joke around with my friends. I said "That's so Puerto Rican," to one of my PR friends and her and her friends just laughed. It was cool.

I usually just ignore it when my friends say things like "That's so gay" or "What a f**"
If i'm in the mood for an argument however, I'll usually say something like this.

Friend: That's so gay
Me: And I think it's in our best interests to be supportive
Friend: wtf?
Me: Just because they/it is gay, that doesn't make it a bad thing. We need to be there to support them/it
Friend: oookay

Or if someone calls me a f**, or someone i know a f**, or tries to use gay in an insulting way, i go with this one.
