I quite like the idea of these. Every time I wander around a beautiful woodland, I feel there's an air of enchantment about the place. What different enchanted forests do you know of or have you created in fantasy?
What are the properties of these places? What sort of thing happens there?

Consider:
* Inhabitants (racial) - maybe the usual elves, fairies, pixies etc...?
* Flora - flowers (what types - the ones we know or created)? Lot's of fungi?
* Fauna - what kinds of animals are around?
* Minerals - what sort of rocks, soil exist there?
* Atmosphere - normal? Foreboding? Light air?
* Magic - Is there any magic there? If so, is it good/bad? Is mysticism, illusion or alteration magic applicable?

Of course, other topics in this subforum will have the same or similar questions.

Look at this picture for examples...

It just LOOKS creepy and ghostly.

This one too....

This one here has the size factor with the Sequoias, and the bright cerulean glimmer of the sky coming through the mist is awesome.

That one feels more tranquil but with some kind of immense natural power attached.

What do you think of those analogies?

I think that these places have some sort of magical powers that create the environment. I think that they would bring some sort of peaceful tranquility being in the environment as well as some sort of supernatural mystical events could take place, it would definitely be an amazing story scenery.

WOW Mel, I had no idea you had thoughts like those when you wondered into any kind of woodland. I gotta tell ya, back when I was a kid I used to like to enter any woods I saw. That was back before I knew there was lots of annoying insects in most of them. rolleyes
I sure have lots of special woods in my stories. One of which being this forest that is called the "Sleep Forest" in my story called "Legends from Kamaelstrom". That''s the original name and I'm not sure if I should shorten it but the point is that people think it's cursed cuz anybody who wonders in never steps out. The only ones who have managed to get out in time were those who didn't venture far inside of it. They think it's protected by a certain magic that makes anyone sleepy and it's avoided at all costs. There are obviously no inhabitants or animals in there cuz of the reason I just stated but the flora in the region seems to be unaffected by the forest so, there's lots of it. And since there are no animals to feed on the flora, you can imagine how overgrown everything must be in there, right? I haven't really thought of the kinds of minerals you can find but it's pretty typical, me thinks... the kind you could find in almost any forest. The atmosphere is obviously not like any other around, its air is light like it would be in any high mountain, especially at night cuz you know how plants breath oxygen during that time period. It's not a very large forest so most plants don't die; there's not much conflict because some plants have adapted to breath oxygen during daytime too.
And finally! There isn't any real magic there. I don't wanna say what's causing the sleep effect cuz that's what I think could make the story interesting anyways but it's definitely not magical at all.

What do you think? neutral

How does it differ from the Sleeping Forest in FFVII?

I believe I already mentioned how it's different. I mean, the one in FF7 has beasts that attack you in there, doesn't it? Well, any beasts that wander into mine don't come out or even stay awake. You can try going into it with a mask to protect your face or even send animals without a sense of smell but that doesn't work. Anything that wanders in there just stops moving after a little while and only plants are not affected.
People in that land have come to think of the place as haunted, magical or even cursed. 3nodding
Needless to say, they avoid it like the plague. mrgreen

That is a very intriguing forest Hypno. This is kinda random, but is this forest used as a sort of punishment place for criminals and such, almost like a death penalty?

Thanks Brad!
You know, I had considered it at first but none of the kings during the time of the story would actually do such a thing. You see, the King who was still king at the time the story began, was a kind and fair man so he considered such a thing to be too cruel for anyone. Also, they don't know a thing about what's deep in the forest so they can't research and without researching into the matter at hand, how can you be sure that doing such a thing won't result more beneficial to the criminals?
That forest in particular had been that way ever since before he was king but, not so long ago that many kings before had a good chance to think about doing so. Perhaps the king before him did but nobody is really sure how it all began.
Guess what? The prince at the beginning of the story is named "Brad", isn't that curious? He is also as kind as his dad is and he gets to be involved in pretty cool adventures before and after he is crowned. 3nodding

Well it IS a very nice picture, yeah.
Do you suppose there's a magical or even supernatural aura about that place? A place like that would be dreamy if it wasn't for all the bugs and creepy crawlers that must live there, he-he. mrgreen

BTW, don't you have any comments on any of the previous posts? Take your time and let us know later if you wish. biggrin

Well that make sense Hypno. I was wondering the same thing too about it being beneficial to the thief. But then I thought that could be part of the plot. There is some kind of hidden and unknown civilization in the deep reaches of it and for one reason or another, nobody is allowed to leave, including the thieves that are thrown into the forest. And then one day the King/Prince, or someone (perhaps a group even) loyal to the crown is goes into forest and finds this civilization, with all the criminals he's helped send into it. Then it just escalates from there with the tension and anger the thieves have towards the loyalist. That's just a random thought I had about it sweatdrop
And sweet! A prince with my name! Who becomes King no less! I always knew my name was special. xd

Thanks for saying so! That's a neat random thought but that's not how my story goes. If you want, you can take that idea and go with it cuz I'm sure as heck not gonna use it. I have my own idea as to why the Sleep Forest ended up that way and I don't want to share it just yet.

Yeah, who knew right? I am not sure why I picked "Brad" for his name but it's the only one that sort of went along better with his last name.
And yes, he gets to be king but only for a short while. After a few years he marries the only princess left in the continent and merges both kingdoms together to form the first good and benevolent empire. I haven't foreseen that far ahead into their future but I know nothing lasts forever so, I'm sure that one of his descendants will turn things for the worst. sad

There is a forest in the novel I'm writing (which has officially had a much needed title change). It's one of the Lunar Wolf settlements, and is the safe place. Home, basically. It's made up of willow trees, which all swish in the wind, and it makes it all magical and calm and nice... I like willow trees. It's got lots of daisies and buttercups, and some magical flowers that don't really exist. There's loads of pretty butterflies, and a pond with lily pads and frogs (I love colourful, tiny frogs). It's magical too. Later in the novel, in parts I haven't got up to yet, the magical secrets are revealed *dun dunn duunnnn*. Like, a lake with enchanted water which the Lunar Wolves use to determine their elements. Or... the shrine with the 'Element Crystals'. Or... the gigantic, huge, collosal jewel which holds the Lunar Wolves spirits.

I like it. It's called Salito Forest. Before you ask, I just made that name up. Salito doesn't mean anything (at least, I don't think it does).

A sleeping forest? Sounds cool. *Gasp* I want to know more about your story D:. And forest. And stuff.

It's funny how forests are always connected with magic, isn't it? And there's almost always one in every single book ever. I suppose mine joins the crowd whee

hmmm a peacful forest would be very nice =) there would be lots of beautiful women. not in a perverted way i just thnk that women are very peaceful and calming. the senery could have flowing ponds all around and high trees. maybe a little fog down low =) and steam rising from the ponds. huts in the trees would be amazing, places to live =) so everyone can be at harmony all the time

That sounds nice Vaporeae! So you made a huge jewel be inside the forest? I gotta tell ya, my forest may not have a magical thing like that but it does have something out of that world, he-he. I might tell you all what that thing is one day but not yet.
I suppose the name is ok and who knows, maybe "Salito" actually means something in another language. I do know that "Sal" is actually "Salt" in Spanish but I am not familiar with any other languages yet.

Thanks for your comment on my forest! Like I mentioned before, magic has nothing to do with it putting people to sleep but there are other places in that world that are affected by magic of one kind or another like, for example. There is a wasteland that ended up as such after a powerful wizard held magical experiments there. The most wonderful thing in the area is a cave but, that's a topic for a different thread, me thinks. wink

So Cupid, you mean you'd like to see something along the lines of a treetop village? I suppose most women are like that but you clearly haven't seen the amazons in my story. They are pretty outgoing, hard headed, quick tempered and not peaceful at all! They don't usually stay quiet for very long and they tend to move around if their village becomes threatened. They even use a forest as their home for a while! 3nodding
