I got a new magazine. xd
Anyway I came across a very interesting artical and thought it would be something good to put here. Daemons and Demons.
Since I started looking things up on line I've see people jump from daemons to demons when talking about evil spirits. In truth I didn't know the differents and just thought daemon was an American spelling of Demon. So when my magazine turned up with an artical called 'The Daemons Within' I quickly turned to that page and found my old ideas of Daemons smashed apart.
I know I'm not the only one there thought daemon mean demons as in evil spirits but that's wrong. The word Daemon come from Greek and acutally means a deity or god. Daemons where closely linked with Guardian Spirits and would protect the people they were linked with. The Romans also had this believe.
So where did daemons become demons? Well that would be the Early Christians. They decided that this belief of a Guardian Spirit was Pagen so went about destorying the idea. Daemons were no longer Guardian Spirits but worked for the devil. They would try to tempt man away from 'The True God'.
They later dropped the 'a' from Daemon and gave us Demons.
I though this would be interesting to know for anyone studying daemons and demons. I know I found it useful.
Oh and this information is from Paranoraml Magazine, the artical was by Anthony Peake on his new book 'The Daemon: A guide to your extraordinary secret self'.

Does the magazine spell it "deamons" or "daemons"? I've only ever heard the latter in reference to the Greek spirits. If I remember right (no doubt I don't), they're somewhat analogous to the Japanese kami and the Voodoo loa - divine god-like beings without being The Big Guy Upstairs.

Here's another interesting tidbit, demon comes from the word Deimos which means spirit. The bible itself never actually uses the word demon, it uses the term Devils for Fallen Angels. So actually Devils, Demons and Daemons are all different things.
(Something my dad and I looked into because of some of the anime out there had spirit translated to demon in the dubbed version and we wondered why.)

I thought Deimos was one of the principal Greek gods of fear, the other being Phobos?

Quote: Demon, n., an evil spirit or being. From the Latin daemon, which in turn is taken from Greek mythos. From 1387 in English usage, but the earliest English usages reflect the Greek sense, a spirit that often guides the affairs of men. The sense of an evil being dates to c. 1400. source for the above: wordorigins.orgQuote: The three English words demon, daemon, and daimon all derive from Greek δαίμων (daimôn), the word for a spirit that served as a link between the human and divine spheres. Daimons could be benevolent or malevolent. They were much lower in the divine hierarchy than gods like Jupiter and Diana. source for the above: daily writing tips.comIts seems I was little confused on the deimos part, thanks for pointing that out, but the daemon/daimon being spirits in general seems to match up. I learned something new today biggrin

The word demon always bothered me anyways so this is nice to know. as i dont believe in "demons" just good and bad spirits. The difference to me is spirits were human and demons are not. i think what people consider demons (the ugly nasty looking creatures we classically think about sharp teeth big eyes whatever) are actually creatures from other planes of existance(dimensions) that frighten us because we don't know what they are we tend to fear what we dont understand kind of thing so we classify(all living creatures can be bad or good).
This is a classic example of word meanings being changed for someones benefit.
