The sun was shining high in the sky bathing a rather wet white lioness. The heat had been too much for her so she had gone for a swim and now she was resting in the sun, close to the borders so that she could help watch them and be near by if anyone needed to tell her something.

Today was good.

She let a smile cross her maw as her tail swatted all the annoying flies away. Today was her day and she wasn't going to allow some stupid annoying.... really annoying flies ruin it.

She let out a soft growl and suddenly snatched a fly out the air spitting it back out. Flies really did taste disgusting but at least it was one less fly to annoy her.

Days had been long and arduous for Are'nui as he travelled towards the ocean. He had a goal in mind, something his mother had told him once when he was little. There was a place full of water as far as the eye could see and with waves like his own on his pelt. Ever since then he had been fascinated with going to the ocean. It would have never occurred to him that there might be a pride living there. Being a rogue all his life made him more curious than anything.

His blue eyes peered foward as he could smell the salt in the air and hear the waves coming on the shore. Excitment was in every step as he went closer to the end of the shore, letting his toes touch the cool water unaware of anyone else that might be around.

After killing yet another fly and there still being a hundred or so still flying around the white lioness got up. She wasn't about to be attacked by flies! Stupid things.

She let her shady spot in a rather bad mood, she had so looked forward to being able to just rest but no the flies had to ruin it didn't they! Stupid stupid flies. She let out a soft growl as she walked away, she might as well patrol the borders looking for the new lions if there were any.

She walked for a while before she saw anyone and it wasn't someone she recognised. She half wondered where all the prides guards were. Well she would find that out later, for now she needed to go and talk to the strange youngster who looked very sea like, or at least he seemed to from where she was standing.

"Hello?" She called out, hoping to get the males attention. Might as well go and introduce ones self.

Mesmorized by the waves, he was broken from his reverie by the sound of another's voice. At the sight of the approaching female, he didn't see anything dangerous about her. Her stance and greeting was rather cordial. He dipped his head in response before returning the greeting.

"Hello!" And then he pieced together the pieces...ah! Now it all made sense to him. Perhaps this was the place where his third aunt lived with her family. He surely hoped so. "I'm Are'nui. I don't mean to intrude but I've always wanted to see the ocean. My mother spoke of it occassionally when I was little and ever since then I had been fascinated with it." He told her ernestly.

She smiled as she reached him.

"Yes it is beautiful but it has its moods. It can be dangerous if it feels like it." She smiled at him sweetly though so not to scare him or anything.

"Have you just come to visit then? Or are you hoping to stay? We welcome anyone so if you wish to stay you can we will just ask something of you." She continued her sweet smile to reassure him. He was young so she wasn't about to try and scare him now.

She looked him over and admired his colours. He would fit in here there was no doubt about that if he wanted to anyway.

He pondered for a moment before he replied to the lioness, "My first thoughts were to visit here, my mother told me I have a great Aunt that lives here but the closer I got to here, the more I felt at ease."

He turned to look at the lioness, "I've never lived in a pride before, but wandering around day by day and not knowing when I'd get to sleep is pretty hard," Are'nui paused, "How would I go about joining your pride?"

Kwaruza listened and smiled as she did so.

"If you want to join the pride you are welcome to. All lions need to be tested by the sea to make sure they are allowed to join. The sea is everything to us and it decides who is and isn't an adult and who can and can't join the pride. The sea's judegement is final. It's not hard though and all you need to do is stay still until I tell you to come back." She spoke softly to reassure the male, and didn't say all that it involved. It was rather daunting.

"If you still want to join, you can follow me down to the waters edge and we can start it. The tide should be coming in soon." She hoped that she hadn't scared him with all the details, it was a rather scary prospect.

Listening quietly, Are'nui wasn't sure what to make of what the lioness was saying. It made sense, in his mind, to test every lion in a swimming test, but he wasn't sure how well he'd do. And the last thing he'd want to do was fail something where he knew he could do better.

He gathered up a bit of courage as he nodded his head. There were very few times that he had actually gone out swimming, but this would be, hopefully, the first step in becoming a better swimmer. "Ok. I'd like to test myself then." He nodded in confirmation.

"Great, follow me then!" She smiled and happily started trotting towards the beach. She needed to work on her explaining she really wasn't good at explaining the rites it seemed. She would make a note to work on that later.

"You said you had a great aunt that lives here, do you know her name?" Kwaruza asked as they walked. They didn't have far to walk but she was curious all the same and walking while conversing was much better then walking in silence in her opinion!

He followed after her, making sure not to stray too far behind her. Ears perked forward and backwards, listening to the sound of the ocean come onto the shore.

At her question, he perked forward and paused for a moment. "Yes I do. Her name is Sevati. My mother told me plenty about her since she has part of her name in honor of my great aunt. That is what my grandfather tells me," He told her.

Kwaruza listened and nodded.

"Sevati is a wonderful lioness." She smiled and soon enough they were at the shore line. She couldn't help but wonder why the prides borders were so far from the beach it made this all the more difficult!

"Right you need to go out into the water and when i shout stop you stay put until I call you back. Any questions?" Kwaruza smiled as she spoke she hadn't seen anyone have issues with the rites as of yet.

Once they had gotten to the edge of the shoreline and with Kwaruza's questioning gaze, Are'nui nodded his head. "I think I understand it." He told her before taking one last glance at her before turning to the water.

As soon as the water reached his toes, it was nice and cool. The waves weren't too rough, or at least to him it did not look too terribly bad. He kept on walking forward with his head held slightly high, as to not get too much salt water in his face. He hadn't been here too long but one of the first things he found out was how unpleasant it was to have the water in his eyes. It must be because he wasn't born here and used to it, he concluded.

The more he walked forward, the more sluggish and labored his pace was. As the water rose past his knees and towards his shoulders, his ears would p***k back and forth, listening to anything the ocean might tell him.

Kwaruza smiled as she watched the male go out, he seemed confident enough and she was sure he would pass, after all he looked like the sea. She watched him and waited, after all it was really all she could do. She would wait for the tide to come in and raise him off his paws and then if he didn't come back screaming she would call him back and accept him into the pride as a full member and an adult.

With the water rising fairly quickly, Are'nui could slowly feel his feet not touch the bottom of the ocean as firmly as before. It wouldn't be long before he was floating within the water. He kept his gaze foward with a determined look on his face, trying to give this his all.

The next rolling wave had him floating in the water. He tried to not get scared as he did a few kicks of his feet since he couldn't reach the ground. Now was not the time to think about how much he hasn't gone swimming before. But at least he was afloat, he was proud of that!

Kwaruza watched him and once she saw he was floating she called him back. Another lion to join the pride. There seemed so many recently, she couldn't help but wonder where they all came from. It was nice though to see the pride so alive.

Once he returned to shore she would ask him about what position he wished to take in the pride and then leave him to find his way about. She found that lions seemed to learn the lands better when they were thrown in the deep end. Let them loose.
