Alright so I've run into a bit of a snag with my plants, I recently installed a UGF(under gravel filter) and it doesn't cover the full length of the bottom of the tank because I left one plate out of it, so I would have room for my plants on the other side, and it seems as if after installing it in my tank that the plants are slowly dying. one of them my biggest one has now lost all of its leaves and base all thats left is the root.. and i'm fairly certain its dead. I would show picks but it's probably getting removed tomorrow. Anyone have any idea if its the UGF or if something else could be the cause. Granted I did leave the plants out a bit long and the leaves dried up but the rest of the plants are fine now.

hmm.. from what i've read UG filters & live plants just aren't very compatible. the constant water flow in the gravel apparently interferes with the plant roots..
perhaps making a barrier in the gravel between the filter plate and the part without it would allow the roots to grow without the disturbance of the water flow?
that's the only think i can think of... hmm..

I'm very tempted to just remove the whole thing even though it was a big hassle putting it in in the first place but I have some ideas that I could use on it and I can always put in a large supply of new plants when I return from training in the fall. But I've read of some people having the tank the way I do and never having any problems with plants yet one of my plants is now completely dead and I'm transferring the rest to my lower tank. Until I know how big of a problem I have in this one.

UGFs are pretty poor when it comes to filtering and they're really not a good choice with plants either. If you have any other tanks, but the "dead" plant there. Chances are it will start sprouting more leaves eventually with some care.
