Ears twitched, catching the various sounds that filled the air. The chill wind from the south rushed over the flat grassland, ruffling the mare's soft blue coat and whipped at the ribbon looped round her neck, a remainder from a silent past. The forest which she had passed through lay behind her, some distance back now. The low sweeping horizon of the flatland broken by shadowy forms in the far distance that went unobserved by the mare.

Long, slender neck arched, head turning to one side a moment before she dipped her slim muzzle into the cold river that flowed past her hooves. It had been the scent of the water that had drawn her here and slowly she drank deeply, the water's surface reflecting the dark clouds over head.

Carlisle's head bobbed lowly as he walked forward, walking slowly on this dreary day. The sun continued to play peek-a-boo behind the clouds, causing the light breeze to be a bit chilly. Despite this, the large, heavy-set male walked in the cool, shallow waters of a stream. Each hoofstep made a gentle 'splash' as he picked up each foot and placed it down again. Invisible eyes, hidden under not only a thick dark blue mane but also a skull mask, scanned the tree line. It had been well over a week since Carlisle had spotted a human, but he would never let his guard down. They could be watching him..hunting him and could come out of no where to kill him at any moment...
Carlisle shook his head, causing his reins to jingle lightly. He tried to force the thoughts of his past out of his mind, it was difficult. They haunted him while he was awake, and while he slept.
Suddenly the draft stopped. A delicate female, light blue and yellow, stood just up stream her neck bent gracefully to take a drink. A light ribbon tied around her neck, the breeze pulling at it. He froze, observed her. A red gem graced her forehead, and she had two thin tails also with red gems. Carlisle took the position of a statue, and his eyes roved the forest. Humans came with other soquili sometimes, perhaps they were using the pretty female to recapture him...

At first the watery sound of his approch was lost in the bubbling and babbling of the stream itself on its way past her hooves, but gradually the disturbance became noticable, causing one sleek ear to twitch sharply before the graceful head lifted abruptly. Standing perfectly still, only the twin tails moving slowly behind her retaining movement along with the wind's touch in her mane, the mare stared directly ahead, odd.. considering he stood to the side of her. Yet that one ear wastrained on his location.

Slowly, the mare's head turned towards him, tilting slightly as if she was trying to locate him. Indeed she was, for she did not 'see' him. Both ears flicked and twitched, notsrils huffing warm breath against the cool breeze as she scented out the one she knew had approched, and yet had stoped.

The scent of the water interfeared with that of the stranger, and she could not tell who or what it was... The rhythmic splashing had almost sounded like hoofbeats, but had stopped too far away for her to be sure. Puzzled and faintly frustrated that she couldn't 'find' the stranger, the tall mare shifted on the spot, one long leg stepping towards him before she froze again.

"....... hello?"

She sounded as confused as she was, and it made her ears flash back briefly. Saying hello to what might be a wolf or a gazzel .. she really hoped it was either another soquili, or something that wouldn't be thinking to make her dinner.

He watched, interested in the females movements. They seemed different, and her voice had sounded confused. Carlisle scanned the treeline again, and took in a deep breath of air. Only the mare, from what his senses told him. But his experience with humans had taught him better. Humans were tricksters, he had seem other soquili be captured and he had seen it in wars.

Then suddenly something inside him urged him on. His legs took slow steps foreward, all the while his mind did not agree. He had to face this mare, had to trust his senses and go with what he thought he knew. Carlisle thought he knew that it was just him, the mare and some small woodland creatures. And his body had taken a step foreward for him, the water splashing as he placed his hoof back down. He continued this path until he was standing a shorter distance from her.

He studied her face. Her eyes...they were the first thing he noticed now. They were hidden away, beneath her eyelids. Carlisle realized that since he had seen her, the mare had not opened her eyes. This would explain the confusion in her tone earlier. Perhaps she was blind. This thought oddly comforted Carlisle and he relaxed alittle. If the mare couldn't see, he should let her know of his presence.

"Hello...I...I won't hurt you"

He spoke quietly, his voice low and deep. The pain from his past was not well hidden, and could be heard on his tongue. He watched the light blue mare from beneath the layers in front of his eyes. He hoped he had not startled her by moving closer, and speaking.
