“Mm… that was a better job, Vera. But you still have to work on your fingering. It felt a little… slow.”

Ah, it was such fun to be a Harper! You got to say hilarious things like that and no one would think it was odd! Alright, so, maybe people would think this situation was odd given the people involved… the current heat snap---- the Weyrfolk claimed it was just the beginning of summer, but Xeran knew better; this had to be some sort of freak weather incident----had forced the Harpers into a rather unusual situation. Or, more particularly, it had forced the muscular Xeran into a rather shirtless situation, showing off what he considered to be his best feature.

Admittedly, the scars didn’t help. Mining was not a safe occupation, even if he had gotten out of it while young. But, hey. It wasn’t like Weyrfolk would mind a shirtless Harper running around, even if he was heavily scarred. Currently, the Harper was sprawled across some furs on the ground in one of the common rooms, idly plucking his harp. It was past the midday meal, meaning both Harpers were happily fed and more inclined to simply laze about than actually do anything. At least, Xeran was. Knowing Vera, she’d be working on something soon enough.

“Lady Tessi has been complaining about your fingering too, by the way,” he added thoughtfully to the girl nearby. Vera, of course. Xeran was always very careful to never let the young woman out of his sight for very long. There was no telling what sort of trouble she would get into if he wasn’t there to keep an eye on her. They had a… strange relationship, one that seemed utterly incomprehensible to others. Xeran and Vera were just fine with this.

In fact, at times, they went out of their way to make things even more confusing. If Harpers couldn’t have fun like this, who could? They were simply… close. Xeran yawned and stretched as luxuriously as possible, just in case someone was watching. Harpers were always ready to give a show, especially if it might result in small accidents. Then again, Xeran could usually achieve this with just a broad smile.

Today Vera was wearing just the long tunic again, a fact which was quite likely to give her teacher a seizure or something. Grabbing up her latest piece, she sidled over to the elder harper and plopped down right in front of him, leaning back against his chest. Taking out her favorite soft rag, she began to polish the wooden flute in her hand. She had just played the song through moments before, and had given up in a fit of pique, leaving the harp behind.

"Last time you complained that I went too fast, Xer. If you like it when I go fast, stop complaining."

b*****d. Humming to herself, the young journeyman piled her hair atop her head and pinned it in place rather lazily, the flute and rag in her lap. "What do you think of this one? Have I been rubbing it hard enough?" Sometimes she had a tendency to be too soft with her instruments, but this one had promise, she thought.

Definitely had promise. It was a present for someone, someone whose name would remained unnamed. He had some idea that he would be on the receiving end of an instrument, but he didn't know that she had plans for more than one. That pleased her quite a bit. Besides which, she truly did need something to keep her hands busy.

"Oh she has, has she? What were her particular complaints? Was I too rough on her?" That, too, had come up before. Vera could sometimes get carried away in a song, and she probably needed to slow things down just a little. Of course, when she compensated that way, she was pretty sure she overcompensated. That was the source of the present argument at least.

By this point she was essentially oblivious to Xeran's half-naked state. He'd spent a lot of time around her like that, and she didn't mind it at all. He was pleasantly warm in the cold North... though that wasn't a bonus just now. "Why don't you give me some pointers, Xeran? You know an awful lot about fingering, after all."

Kyllae liked music. Parties were nothing without it, dancing impossible. Music made everything more exciting, more fun. Like herself! She hadn't been looking forward to the afternoon much. She hadn't anything planned, and it seemed all of her friends were busy with one thing or another. How boring. Didn't they realize she needed entertaining? And just her luck, a few, quite notes slithered into her ear. Her head instantly turned in the direction of the noise. Music? She was there. She picked herself up in a hurry, eager to investigate.

And what a curious scene greeted her! Two people she assumed to be harpers, laying on furs, toying with their instruments. Kyllae liked harpers. A lot. All the ones she'd met had been clever, knowledgable, talented. All the things she enjoyed in people. Their lack of 'proper attire' struck her for just a moment, though it hardly phased her. She wasn't wearing much herself. A light, sleeveless top and a short skirt. To keep cool of course, while still showing off a nice bit of trim, tanned leg.

She only caught a snippet or two of their conversation, since she wasn't trying hard to listen. Eavsdropping wasn't something she approved of much. "Ho' there," she called, offering a brilliant smile. Best try and be pleasant. It seemed as of late she was just as adept at incuring people's anger as she was their friendship. And to be on a harper's badside would most likely prove disastorous. She was careful to stay innocent enough as she approached, offering the pair a little curtsey, her smile never faltering. "Apologies for the sudden entrance, I couldn't help but overhear your playing. Mind if I listen a spell?" she asked, perky, though not annoyingly so. Not one to forget manners when they were called for, she bent over and extended a hand for either of them to shake, whoever saw fit to grasp it first. "I'm Kyllae, by the way," she informed. "Candidate and Dolphineer extraordinare, at your service," she added.

She gave them a quick look over, appraising the two. It was hard to gage their relationship through a simple glance, but...they seemed close. Were they together? She didn't want to make assumptions...if they allowed her to stay, she would try and puzzle it out. Her gaze lingered just a moment longer on the male's scars. What happened to him that he should be so marked? But knowing it was rude to stare, her eyes instantly found more interest in their faces.

If Xeran minded Vera’s… difficulty with personal space, he didn’t show it. As far as he was concerned, the more people who thought they were ‘together’, the less Vera would get hit on. And Xeran so detested it when someone flirted with his little protégé. They were almost always the ‘wrong sort’, a category that encompassed pretty much every single male except for himself and Marko.

He plucked the half-made flute from Vera’s fingers and examined it critically before saying, “Hmm… I think you’ve been doing exactly the right amount of rubbing. The length really appreciates it. This is a difficult wood to keep…”

Xeran’s voice trailed off, mostly because of the intrusion into the private little Harper world of badly-worded innuendos and thinly-veiled metaphors. At least he didn’t seem angry about it and accepted Kyllae’s hand easily in his own calloused hand. “Well, it’s nice of you to call it music, Kyllae, but it ain’t. That’s just the noises Harpers make before music. We’ve got to make them before playing in order to give others time to run away. It’s the law. I’m Xeran and this here is Vera.” He even went as far as to ruffle Vera’s hair at his words, apparently quite fond of the younger girl.

And, together, they made Captain Pern! No… wait… no they didn’t. But they did make a pair of fairly intelligent Harpers. Also one naked person, if you considered Xeran's lack of a shirt and Vera's apparent disdain for pants. Waving a hand at the expanse of fur, Xeran invited Kyllae, “Well, go on. Sit down. I don’t want to keep staring up at you.”

But, back to Vera, he added, “Oh, Lady Fessi has just been upset. She needs a soft touch, you know. Your fingering hasn’t been delicate enough for her. She’s an old girl, you know.” It was a conversation that Kyllae probably wouldn’t understand much, but, hey; she had been the one who intruded on the Harpers. As if Xeran was going to interrupt a lesson just for her!

“What brings you here, Kyllae, aside from the promise of music? I thought all of the Candidates would be pretty busy. Back at Harper Hall, we’d never let Apprentices get away with a moment of freedom.” In retrospect, maybe this explained why so many had abandoned the Hall.

Absently, the journeyman grabbed the instrument back. "You mean you never let us getting away with anything ever! Not even after we've walked the tables. A bunch of slavedrivers, truly. Consider yourself lucky that you never have to handle this man's bells, oh Candidate," Vera said hotly, leaning casually across Xeran. "To hear him go on about them, they are the most impressive bells that have ever been forged. Ridiculous."

If the girl missed that one, there really was no hope for her. No hope at all. "I'll bet you'd like that, Xer. Someone at your service. Do you service harpers a lot?" she inquired innocently, rubbing the clean cloth against the flute.

The chatter was somewhat typical of the pair of harpers, and it was quite obvious that they were both very comfortable together. "Lady Fessi complains too much, but I promise that I will be gentle with her in the future. Promise!" Amusement glinted in her steel gray eyes, and she glanced up at the young Candidate. There was quite a lot of her to see, wasn't there? Why was it that nearly all the young women she had met at the Weyr were tall?

Hmm. Perhaps one of the riders had a preference for tall women, or else believed that tall women were better suited to riding dragons. From what she could remember of the ballads (which was a lot) and teachings there was no real emphasis on height in women.

And yet here, standing before her, was the very proof that dragonriders did favor tall girls. The proof had been walking around the halls, filling them near to the brimming in point of fact. "What he means to say is that I am Vera, and he is Xeran, and together we are Xera." It was a quaint little thing that they had come up with some time ago, and she couldn't precisely remember how many glasses of wine they had had beforehand. Whatever the amount, it was-- or had been-- rather outstanding.

"Can't you see, Xer? Her legs brought her here," the young woman pointed out matter-of-factly, her expression quite innocent, just as though she had not made a terrible joke moments before. "What about this part?" she inquired, pointing out a particular bit of wood. "Is the girth sufficient, do you think? I don't want Marko to be disappointed."

"Nice to meet you Xeran, Vera, Xera," Kyllae smiled, shaking Xeran's hand firmly before withdrawing hers. She accepted his offer of a seat, folding her legs carefully under her as she sat down. Most of their conversation, if not all, was lost on her, but she listened just the same. It was interesting enough. Well, just about anything seemed interesting compared to candidate talk. Which basically involved talking about eggs, and complaining about chores. One could only handle so much of that.

She had been about to say something, before Vera came in with her little comment about her legs. That was good and fine. She supposed her legs had taken her here... "I suppose your right. My legs did bring me here. But it all honesty, I came here hoping to be entertained a little," she shrugged. "And I do find your bantering quite satisfactory to my needs. Try not to mind me too much." She sprawled out on her stomach, laying her head on her folded arms, closing her eyes halfway. Really, it was nice to relax and sit back once in a while. She wasn't fond of all the manual labor the people here seemed inclined to thrust upon her.

"Busy? Oh but of course. I'm always very busy," she informed, sounding a little amused. Kyllae was busy, that was true. Just not usually with what she was supposed to be doing. While she had to do a fair amount of work, she was also quite good at getting other people to do work for her. Thanks to a pleasing figure and a quick tongue, she was rather good at convincing people, most specifically males, into doing things for her under the impression that she would do something for them, which wasn't true. She was pleasing them enough with just looks, right? She didn't figure she owed them anything else. And when all else failed, a half mark or two could usually get someone to do her chores.

Kyllae often wondered about the things riders looked for when they searched girls. She didn't think much of height though, she noticed chest size. As one of the seemingly few girls with any sort of breasts on her here at Ista, it seemed to her that riders liked their women flat chested. Go figure.

Oh, come on! Now Xeran was just getting bored with Kyllae. He and Vera worked hard on their little banter! It was so annoying to hear some Candidate completely overlook the whole ‘polishing his bells’ comment. Perhaps the poor girl was daft…Well, of course she was, he realized. She was a Candidate, after all! Marko was completely right about that: you had to have a special sort of mind to actually want to be associated with those great big beasts.

He gave Kyllae a pitying look before turning his attention back to Vera. She, at least, appreciated his wit and responded to it in kind. Besides, if Vera didn’t get enough attention from her old mentor, she would start to wander! Clearly, since Kyllae wasn’t responding to the more… oblique references, it was time to make them more obvious.

“Oh, Vera. There were always people lining up to polish my bells. There were people lining up for a mere hope of polishing my bells. Although, it would be nice to have someone at my service for such things…” the sentence was sealed with a wink that should have been outlawed for sexual harassment. If Kyllae missed that then there really was no hope for the girl. Actually, he was starting to think that anyway, but, hey; he was giving her another chance.

Thank Faranth for Vera! She responded to things and provided Xeran with plenty of hilarious material. He accepted the flute length and regarded it critically from all angles. “It’s good right now, but I could see it getting thinner if you’re not careful. And Marko wouldn’t like that. You know he hates putting thin things in his mouth. He likes thick hard things.”
PostPosted: Wed May 27, 2009 10:34 pm

Vera contemplated the problem that Kyllae's responses represented for a moment, trying to decide whether the girl was intentionally dodging the witty words that she and Xeran had cobbled together, or if she was that oblivious. All in all, the harper did not much enjoy being ignored whatever the girl's reasoning might be. "Oh Xeran, you know that I am happy to polish your bells... for a price," she quipped, a wicked grin tugging at the corners of her lips.

"It would be worth the marks, Xer. You know that!" She was, after all, an accomplished polisher of bells. Bells, and anything else musical. That wink was ridiculous. Honestly, did the harper truly believe that such obvious tactics worked on women?

... Then again, maybe they did work? Tilting her head back so that she could look at Xeran, she tried to decide whether he was quite charming enough to manage it. "Tell me, oh teacher-mine, do you think that you're more of a rake or a, hmm, roommate?" What was a subtle way of asking that question, anyway?

Probably there was no way. "It's not going to get any thinner! Imagine how humiliated I would be to give Marko an excessively rubbed flute. He's got enough of those on his own." Marko's beautiful, weather-worn flutes! Alas, she could die of the tragedy there. It was terrible, simply terrible. "He doesn't need such limp things."

Nor would she allow him to have another! "Oh Xeran you wherry, he doesn't put them in his mouth, he puts his lips to them and blows." Honestly, did her mentor even know how to play a flute? She rolled her eyes expressively. "Satisfaction is definitely the aim," Vera agreed lightly, pillowing her head against her fellow's shoulder. She whispered something into his ear, idly stroking the length of the half-finished flute with the cloth.

Out of all the things she might have expected upon coming over here...this conversation certainly wasn't one of them. Kyllae could be quite clever, and was a bit of a flirt herself...this conversation was far from lost on her. Unfortunately, she felt she was enjoying it too much. She held a hand up to her mouth, biting her knuckle in an effort to keep quiet, even as her shoulders trembled a little with quiet laughter. Her mouth pulled up in an exasperated grin, before she couldn't take it. She shook her head, battling silent giggles. Were they trying to get a rise out of her, or were they checking to see if she had some sort of brain inside that big blond head of hers.

"I don't know, polishing bells doesn't seem too difficult, I don't see why he'd have to pay," Kyllae teased. "I'm sure there are plenty of ladies here more than willing to lend a hand in polishing Xeran's bells." Which wasn't an entire lie in her mind. Xeran certainly was good looking. And there certainly a lot of...easy women around here. All the horny greens were to blame appearantly. Sureeeee....

They certainly seemed eager enough with their words. What was the point of this? Were they together? He was a little old for her, wasn't he? This could just be teasing. Whatever. Not a big deal. It took a lot to make Kyllae uncomfortable. "Since you two seem to be experts on the topic of instrument care and using them to their utmost desire and pleasure...I don't suppose I could ask you a question?" She propped herself up on her elbows, glancing between the two of them. "I have these drums, that I'm afraid I'm neglecting. Do tell me how I might treat them so that I might get the best noise from it," she asked, sounding innocent enough, even adding a little head tilt to it; though the way she smiled, the way she watched from underneath those thick lashes, made it more than obvious she knew what was going on. "Should I tap them, hit them hard, or is gentle a better approach?" She offered a single raised eyebrow at this one. What a strange turn this conversation had taken.

PostPosted: Thu May 28, 2009 5:09 pm

Awwr… poor Vera! Was Kyllae aware that she was ignoring Xeran’s little partner, or was she just deliberately trying to target the male Harper? It wouldn’t have been the first time such a thing had happened. And Xeran was not about to allow it either. Clearly, the older Harper would just have to make it up to Vera. “Oh, so you’ve been selling your bell-polishing skills lately, eh? I had no idea that you had such negotiable skills, Vera.”

Bah. If she ever did such a thing… well, there would be a sudden rash of death around the Weyr, that was for sure. Perfectly natural death too, as a large and angry Xeran quite naturally leads to death for some other men. Not that he would literally kill someone… but he would certainly threaten them. And if they didn’t believe him, he’d threaten them in a much louder voice. See how they liked that!

“Was that a Significant Pause type roommate, Vera? Because I think we both know the answer to that question…” actually, even Xeran didn’t know the answer to that question. Honestly, he was more interested in preventing Vera’s sex life than having one of his own.

“Oh, my bells are very special, Candidate Kyllae. They require very special care. I wouldn’t trust their polishing to just anyone running around…” Ok, this metaphor was beginning to bore him now and his mind went wandering around for a different one. Thankfully, Vera was there to supply him with more. “See, there’s a reason why I’m not a wind player, Ver. Probably because I kept getting kicked out of the flute classes. Can’t imagine why,” he said in his very best innocent voice that was about as innocent as a baby tiger with a dead chicken.

Oh, drums? Now Xeran faltered a little and looked at Vera for a bit of guidance. That was odd. Drums could only be owned and played by Harpers, so it would seem that Kyllae had once been one of them. But he didn’t recognize her at all and, judging by Vera’s whispers, she didn’t recognize the Candidate either. Oh wait! Drums had to be some sort of metaphor! Either for breasts or perhaps bottom, Xeran couldn’t decide which.

“Oh, well, I’m not into spanking, so I can’t tell you that. Regardless of what Marko might tell you.” A horrible smile crossed his face and he nudged Vera. “She’ll know more about it. She also ought to know more about… ah… drum care, than me.” Nudgenudgewinkwink.

Poor Vera indeed. "Yes it was a Significant Pause roommate. As though you could be any other kind," Vera said with a huff, despite the fact that Xeran was in fact her roommate, no significant pause. Blinking, the Journeyman tried to sort out what the Candidate girl might be implying. "Well, you see, it all depends on the drum! Some drums do best when tapped, and others? Others do best when hit hard, or gently. So, my suggestion is that you try out those drums until you find a beat that you like." Yes, yes, that was it!

"Ohh, and it also depends on the thickness of the hide," she said, revealing a Great Truth (tm). "Some hides are thin, and you're really better off being gentle with them." Hides, like skins, could be tricky that way. Some skins were thicker than others, some hides the same. ... Was there a difference? With thick hides you had to pound hard, of course. "It's all very logical, you see."

Having decided that she was not going to ignore the other female just because it seemed like Kyllae was ignoring her, Vera began to use more pressure on the flute. The thing ought to be sanded, really it ought to. She would have to consider that later. "Xeran is terribly proud of his bells. He thinks that they are the finest around, so he is very careful of whom he allows near them. Ridiculous man, really."

All of this said whilst leaning back against said man, almost cuddling against him. Then again, Xeran was furniture. More so that that terrible stone couch the Weyrfolk had tried to pawn off as such. She shuddered. "Xer... don't lie. I know you like spanking." She knew sharding well, didn't she? Or was that one of Marko's fantasies? Hmmn. It was decidedly possible, wasn't it?

"You keep getting kicked out of flute classes because you are an overenthusiastic teacher," the diminutive harper said chidingly, patting her erstwhile professor. "I have very negotiable skills, great teacher Xeran! And you'd know that if you had been paying attention. Shame on you." Although... it was entirely possible that Xeran would freak out about that. Any suggestion that his dear little darling might have gained certain experiences... well, it was best to conceal such possibilities from him.

... Not that they truly existed, but it was the principle of the matter! "There are always so many ladies desirous of lending him a hand," she said sadly, for it was very true. Sad because those hands were never appreciated as they ought to be. Terribly sad. "I'm an expert on instrument creation primarily," she added rather belatedly. Hmmn. This girl really was quite tall, wasn't she? Good on her for sitting down. It made things ever so much more manageable.

Had she been paying undue attention to the male of the pair? Kyllae mentally smacked herself. Xeran certainly was ridiculously attractive, but she wasn't looking for something like that at the moment. For better or for worse, she was actually mildly interested in a single person at the moment, all flirting and teasing aside. She would have to try extra hard to pay attention to Vera.

"That does seem the right way to go about it," Kyllae mused, allowing her eyes to flick over to Vera, but not to linger. That would seem weird. Trying too hard to get attention would be even worse than ignoring her. Xeran certainly seemed protective, over her. She didn't fancy any sort of scuffle, if he thought she was acting strangely towards his younger charge.

"Most men with bells seem quite proud of them," she shrugged. It was quite enjoyable to listen to the two of them go at it. It wasn't exactly what she'd been expecting, when she came over here, but hey, she certainly was entertained. At the comment about Xeran liking spanking, she took a moment to look at him, trying to decide if he looked like the spanking type.

Realizing that she had paid her attention to Vera now, she decided it would be good to thrown in a bit to Xeran too. So it wouldn't seem like she was ignoring him. "If Vera creates the instruments, what exactly do you do?" she hadn't meant it terribly sexually, it was mostly just curiousity, but no doubt one could find something sexual about it, if they tried. She didn't want to spoil the conversation, it was amusing at the least, but she also didn't want to intrude too much. She was the intruder here. She had to make an effort to be a good guest. Polite at the minimum, friendly at best.
