The ball was starting up cosily by now, things were going quite alright...

And then, the duke made a short announcement, calling four, five people out of the versatile group and requesting them to come out into the entrance hall and go into the (off limits!) left wing.

The staff and guards would let them pass, lead them to a cosy small assembly of couches and chairs out in the hallway, where they would wait.

Dreamer (Tnau)
Ella (with/without Faolan) (Redbud)
Eli (umbra)
Dr. Cromwell (Ruri)
Verdant (LLWinter)

Mister Lindstrom was called in next, after doctor Cromwell and Claudia were released from the Duke's business room. Please enter, close the door and have a seat in front of the desk.

Now tell me, tell me, what is it you seek?

Verdant was the last person to walk into Mr. Banning's office and was all the more nervous for it. He smiled at Ellandra, then left his seat and went throug the office door, closing it behind him. Sitting behind the desk was the duke himself, looking very professional and intimidating at the same time. Verdant stood rooted to the spot as he stared at the dapper man.

Something told him that he was here to recieve his Magicker Spark. He had read up on the subject at the library a few days ago, but it still didnt' seem real to him. Was he really to be the owner of an Essentic? He cringed at the thought. He did not like the idea of being anyone's owner, especially not a being who hadn't even met him. Essentics were always treated as tools in the text he'd read, but why? They were striving to become more than that, but radical activists had convinced most people that they needed to be eradicated.

With a fierce determination he was unaware of, Verdant decided that regardless of what happened, he would protect his Essentic, cost him what it will.

Banning observed verdant carefully with his hawk-eyes, watched him squirm for a bit. Tsk tsk, easy now, you were called in for a one-on-one business conversation, not to be thrown to the lions in a collosseum, dear man.

It pleased him to see a glint of determination there. Yes, show me how steadfast you are, no need to be finicky.

"Be welcome, mister Lindtrom. Please have a seat, make yourself comfortable. Unless you would prefer to discuss the offer I'm about to make you standing up?" Bane said to him, with a hint of a pleased cat-smirk. Really, settle down you.

"I hear you have been employed by Elst? I'm sure you are aware then of what his companion is by now, and what it is we deal with in Life Essentials."

"Hm? Oh, yes! Sorry about that, sir." Verdant took a seat in front of the man, making sure to do his best to make eye contact. It was very rude not to look at someone when they were addressing you.

He listened to Mr. DeLonghy's questions before answering. "Yes, Elst hired me not too long ago as his assistant. I handle customers and all that, so its not really all that big a deal." A brief pause and then Verdant was able to answer. "Yes, I do know about Aoi, actually. He's a Floramancer Essentic, a sub-type of the Magicker Essentics, no? That is what you deal with in Life Essentials; you create new sparks, despite the travesty of so long ago."

He frowned as he remembered the text he'd read. "I'm glad to see that at least one Essentic is doing well," he said, in reference to the flowery little friend of his.

What.. a... chattermouth. Mother Iris. This could take a while...

Then again, who could blame Verdant for not being aware of just how much data EBI had about him. He couldn't be expected to know that all of this was pretty old news for Banning by now? The duke let him finish, holding back the urge to roll his eyes and cut him short with a 'yes, duh'. Instead he plastered on that distant-polite smile, and nodded when the man was done.

"A travesty that was indeed, but we aren't militants for nor against their cause. We exist to offer people solutions to their problems. That the Essentics fare well isn't of our concern, though for the benefit of all we of course prefer them to have a healthy bond with their Owners."
he said, sounding rather dull for a moment. "So far there have been no major problems."

"Now, to get to another topic: you. If I may be so bold to take a wild guess, you're not at all wary of them, aren't you?"
Banning eyed him carefully. "In fact, you appear to be rather fond of them. Curious."

Now, read my mind. Ever thought about owning one for yourself? You sure have the freeform and creativity needed to handle one, one of those elusive Magickers. It would be fun, no?

"Well, why wouldn't I be fond of them?" That was... well, that was quite an odd question. He made no attempt to hide his expression, which clearly read "One of my best friends is an Essentic. Hello?"

Mr. DeLonghy was staring intently at him, as if trying to telepathically tell him something. Verdant was a wee bit weirded out by his eccentricty, but he'd met crazier people at his performances. "I take it you called me in here to offer me a spark? I mean, this is what you do, no? I've thought about it and if you have it, I'd love to be the 'owner' of an Essentic, preferably a Magicker." He resisted to do the air-quote thing with his hands, but it was pretty damn tough.

... because... people don't always think what they act like? Because they're fickle? Oh who cares, fact remains, you like them buggers alright. At least now this conversation was moving on, finally...

"Why yes, I'm offering you a Magicker. I'm sure you'll put it to good use,a creative man like you should have plenty of nice ideas for one."
A Combat one would murder you in your sleep, too. Tsk. Yes, a Magicker suits you best.

"The protocol we follow is simple really.... You sign a contract, we give you the Spark, and will offer you assistance throughout its growth, should you ever have need of it. This event today is but one of the services we offer... Today was arranged partially for the owners to be able to get to know each other, and for the Essentics to associate." Because we found out some die of loneliness. Not talking about Misha, nooo.

"This Contract I speak of is of no legal value, it serves as a token of mutual trust instead. You promise us to lay low and not get yourself, and us, in trouble with your acquisition, and we will provide support where needed."

Again, he looked at Verdant, quite intently. Is this acceptable for you, mister Lindstrom?

"Yes, that sounds perfect." Indeed, everything sounded very simple and they were even offering to help him out if he needed anything. Mr. DeLonghy seemed a little... stern, but he supposed most businessmen were. "Well, I'm quite certain you know that I won't be doing anything to cause trouble, or you wouldn't have offered me the Magicker. I feel like I'm taking up your time though; perhaps I could see the contract?"

The man across from him probably had better things to do than talk to Verdant anyways; he was the host fo the ball, after all. Heh, that rhymed!

Stern? Nah, just a most clashing personality. If they'd been 'classmates', Verdant would be exactly the sort of person Banning would ignore completely. Can't be helped, heh.

"Of course you can..." Banning nodded, reached down into his desk and retrieved one of the last parchment contracts he had in store here. he stood up, and laid it out to Verdant so he could read it. No little words, no legaliffic blather for as far as the usual man in the street could tell. A lawyer'd see it really held no legal value at all right away.

"If you agree to the terms laid out, sign here please."
the duke said calmly, put one of his ornate pens beside the paperand vaguely pointed at a general area in the lower centre.

"Once you have, I can get you your spark. After that it's only a matter of Bonding with it and imbuing it with a Purpose."

Verdant smiled at Mr. DeLonghy. If they'd been classmates, Banning would be the kind of guy he'd probably avoid. They'd be the enthusiastic Goth kid and the over-achiever preppy kid. Not a good mix, if you asked Verdant. That's how the cookie crumbles though, so the nymph gave it no more thought.

He quickly perused the contract and found nothing wrong with it, nothing suspicious. He picked up the lovely pen and signed his name where Banning had (vaguely) indicated. He liked his handwriting; it was pretty, but damn impossible to read 'cos it was so small.

"There. All signed," Verdant quipped, a bit of eagerness in his voice. He was really going to have a Magicker! He wondered if Banning would tell him how to "bond" with the spark and "imbue it with a purpose".

That teensy scrawl did make the duke leeaaan over surreptitiously and give the signature a hawk-squint. Oh, alright then. Somehow he'd almost expected the nereid to scrawl all over the thing, with his flamboyance.

"Good, very good."
Good boy. Ahum. "Just a moment..." dear "...mister Lindstrom."

And off he was, vanishing through the secret panel door, emerging a minute later with the Spark's container. With care, he set it down before Verdant.

A smooth, fragile-looking glass box it was, inlayed with what looked like littlechips of pasteltinted stained glass in subtle crystalline patterns. Only the clasps that held the lid up were made of some silvery metal, and they made no sound when they opened up and held the lid up straight. Inside, on soft down, the Spark shimmered softly. Solid crystals embedded in a formations of smaller ones, with a quite intense unwordly blue hue. Oddly enough, from the moment the box was opened, from inside the crystal formation, deep purple appendages sprouted forth, the Essence weaving in the impreceptible aircurrents in the room like seaweed.

"... they're not all this material. That's the Essence, completely harmless."
It's not calamari, honestly.

"It is yours now... you can safely pick it up, hold it in your hand. If you're open to it, it will bond with you. Uncanny feeling, can't miss it. Then, you will tell it what to do. What you wish it to be. Give it its Purpose. No need to say it to me, or out loud, even... However poetic it sounds, talk to it with your soul. It will understand."

"Oh."

That was really all he could say. The glass box was beautiful indeed and he'd make sure to take very good care fo it, but it was the object inside that took his breath away. It was a marvelous mass of crystals, each one shimmering like blue prisms. The wispy purple Essence swayed slowly, each one moving in a different direction, as if it were alive.

Verdant gingerly picked it up and placed it in his lap. He moved the fringe of hair covering his right eye and tucked it behind his ear, revealing the light scar running down his eye. The crystal really was beautiful, but it also contained something living; it was mind-boggling for the nymph. He picked it up again and held it lightly in his palms. He closed his eyes and smiled. Of course he was open to it; it was really happening, after all. He took a deep, unnoticeable breath, and thought of what its Purpose would be.

Your purpose... your purpose is... Music. Magic.

You are a Rhapsodist.

Verdant opened his eyes with a small gasp. There! He could feel it! It was not unpleasant; in fact, it was soothing. It felt... right. He opened his eyes and smiled at the crystal, his Spark. "It's light and fluttering, like a baby bird or butterfly... thank you, Mr. DeLonghy." Verdant couldn't take his eyes off of it. It'd bonded with him, really, truly bonded!

Banning nodded, even managed to smile at him. Yes, all is well.

"You know it better than I now, it belongs to you now, with you." Told you you can't miss the feeling.

"Do you have any other questions you wish to address now? If not, you are free to be on your way and rejoin the others." he said, relaxedly rolling up the parchment contract and sealing it.

"We will alway provide support for you should you encounter any issues..."

"N-no, I haven't any questions, Mr. DeLonghy. Let's hope I don't run into any of those issues," Verdant said with a chuckle as he placed the spark back in its box and stood up. "Thank you for this. Really, I can't thank you enough." He took a bow, dropped his fringe back over his eye, and quietly stepped out of the room, but not before giving Banning a warm smile and a wave goodbye. Who knew? This was surely not the last time they'd see each other. He was quite certain of that.

Now to go show Elst his newest friend...
