This particular thread revolves around Mutou Yuugi, or Yugi Motou, the main character of the Dual Monsters series. This thread does not revolve around Yami no Yuugi/Yami/Atem/Atemu/whatever you like to call him, as he has his own thread.

I will post my opinions first in a form format, so you can either choose to copy and use the format, or make up your own.

Basic Opinion/What You Answered in the Poll: I love Yuugi a lot.
Why You Hold That Opinion: [SPOILER WARNING] Yuugi, for starters, is an adorable character who is extremely sweet. He's easy to be taken in by just his looks and manner of portraying himself, but there's so much more to him than that.
Yuugi is one of the most loving, kind, compassionate, selfless, and brave characters within the series. When the manga begins, he is picked on for being meek and different, but he never hates anyone for this. On the contrary, he defends his bullies, Jounouchi and Honda, and even takes a beating from them. It's sweet how he'll always see the good in people, saying that they were his friends because they were trying to teach him to be a man through the bullying.
Yuugi is also one of the more interesting characters in the series to follow. He begins as that character that almost anyone can push around, but as he develops, making new friends, learning about his other self, participating in life-threatening games, he gains his own sense of self and bravery, and learns to stand up for what he believes in, while still putting his loved ones before himself.
Yuugi understands that his other half is meant to influence the world by acting as the Game King, and that a lot of the events they participate in revolve around his other half. He is okay with this, and is happy to disappear into his own mind and let Yami no Yuugi take over when it is necessary, and even just to allow Yami no Yuugi to enjoy normal life every once in a while, like when he sent him on a date with Anzu. That was another time when Yuugi showed his selflessness: Even though he had a crush on Anzu, he knew she liked his other half, so tried to set them up, at the same time using the opportunity to make Yami no Yuugi feel better after Duelist Kingdom had ended.
However, Yuugi also learns when the time is appropriate for him to take control of his own life. When he and Jounouchi are put into a death dual against each other by Malik, he convinces Yami no Yuugi to let him take over, because he knows that even though Malik is after Yami no Yuugi, Malik has involved Yuugi's friend in the process, and therefore, Yuugi must be involved as well, to win Jounouchi's heart back.
This continues for a while, Yuugi slowly taking the initiative more and more whenever it is necessary, and allowing his other half to just-as-slowly leave his place in the modern world, and return to where he belongs. I believe Yuugi had a lot more control in the series than anyone, including himself, knew. This is most obviously shown at the end of the series, when he beats Yami no Yuugi in a duel to return him to the afterlife, where Yuugi knows he belongs, even though he wants to keep his other half with him.
Favorite Characters to Pair With: Jounouchi Katsuya, Yami no Yuugi, Bakura Ryou, Kaiba Seto, Kawai Shizuka, Black Magician, Black Magician Girl, Shaadi, Raphael
Rating of Favoriteness: Ninth favorite.

I voted that I have mixed feelings about it. XD It's a love/dislike kind of thing.

I like Yuugi 'cause he's such a sweet character. He's so kind and selfless... If you look in a thesaurus, everything that is synonymous with "kind" is what Yuugi is. There in lies the reason of why I can't bring myself to like him that much. In many cases, he's so nice that he just let's people walk all over him. Not that he isn't a strong character. He's definitely one of the strongest characters in Yuugiou. I just find his kindness to be a big pro, but at the same, he lets it be a big con. =/ Because of this, I don't LOVE him, but I also don't HATE him. ^-^;

My favorite Yuugi pairing is YuugixAnzu. xD;

I'm not sure where I'd put him on my list of favorite characters... He'd be in the top 10, but lower than 5. XD;;

I voted neutral.
I don't like him, but I don't hate him. Sure, he's one of the nicest characters in the show, and also one of the strongest, for all the reasons mentioned in the other replys... but I don't really conect to him on any level. I guess it's more of a personal reason, but I just don't feel anyhting for him.

My favorite ship with Yuugi is: Puzzleshipping (YamixYuugi).

Rating: I don't know... in the top twenty, and maybe in the top ten.

I agree with Nightfure. I'm trying to come up with what I think about him, and oddly enough, I'm finding it difficult.

I do like him. I like that he's generous and thoughtful. Moreover, I love those moments where he stands up for his beliefs, such as his "no you don't" to Yami Yugi who was going to let Kaiba jump. I like that he's unselfish but sticks to his guns when it's important.

That said, it really isn't that difficult for him to be overshadowed by more colourful characters. Seeing as how conflict is what drives a story, it's easier to pay attention to the characters slapping each other with their handbags than it is a character whose story is more personal.

See, you even had to put an instruction at the top to talk about him and not his Yami. =P

If I were to pair him, it'd be with Anzu.

It's interesting how it's difficult to find people who completely dislike Yuugi, but that not many love him like I do. I think it's because he is a very neutral character. He's sweet and kind, and doesn't have many flaws, and that's what makes him uninteresting to a lot of people, especially those who tend to like villains more. Now I'm interested to see what discussions we'll have on the villain characters. I tend to lean more towards the good characters like Yuugi, but it's hard to dislike most of the characters. And thanks for reinforcing my sadness of Yuugi always being overshadowed by his other half, Morgey. XD;;

My pleasure. biggrin

I think it becomes most obvious that the story was him finding his confidence and learning to stand on his own two feet when he duels Yami Yugi at the end. Therein lies the problem really. Obviously, at the very beginning (manga), this is clear too, but I think it gets lost somewhat along the way.

But I'm definitely a villain girl, so it may just be me.

Like Morgey, I too am a villain girl XD

That's probably also a bit of the reason why I have such a disinterest in Yugi. I don't hate him, he's too nice and everything, but all the goodness just makes me not care all that much.

I'm more of a villain-fan as well when it comes to Yuugiou. ^-^;; I like some of the "good" characters, but my favorites are the antagonists and villains. xD;
He's so kind and he has hardly any serious character flaws. It sort of repels people because a lot of people like "good" characters, but they like to see the character work out his problems. With Yuugi, he overcame his push-over personality, but besides that, there weren't any other serious flaws. He just seems a little too perfect to me. ._.;

I'm not surprised about the villain love. The villains of YGO have their good sides (Pegsy was doing it for his sweetheart, Malik for his family, and TK Bakura because he had a very, very reasonable excuse to be pissed off.) Yet there's a great deal of emphasis on the good characters doing no wrong, or doing very little wrong at least. It's a nice moral, but not particularly interesting when it doesn't go both ways.

Plus, my heart goes out a lot more when someone screws up, knows that they've screwed up and have to face the consequences than it does when things aren't their fault. In fiction at least.

Yes, I agree that the point of Yuugi learning to stand up for himself gets lost in the middle. I was right though that you all tend to prefer villains. XD I can definitely see why, especially in the YUU*GI*OU fandom. Not quite sure why I've always preferred the good guys. Maybe it's because I like to see the difficulty in doing the right thing all the time. Though Yuugi is extremely unselfish, he has a lot of enemies because he allows his half to benefit from his life, he has to learn to stand up against those enemies, even though most of them aren't truly after him, and he continues to do the right thing, even when it would be easier not to. It's not like he has to risk his life for his other half and his friends at all times; he didn't have to go to Duelist Kingdom to save his Grandpa, or participate in Battle City to help Yami no Yuugi regain regain his past, or collect all of the Sennen Items to get his memories back. So sometimes in what is seemingly perfection, you realize that good characters struggle as well, and are constantly having to choose between what is right and what is easy. Plus, I think I like to dig into good characters for more flaws; they're definitely less obvious than most villains, but I still feel they're there.

I guess it must suck to be the main character.

The obvious thing is for him to go and do all of that heroic stuff, and it's easy to miss that there was even an option to not do any of it. When I was thinking of the times he takes action, I was thinking "But there would be no show had that not happened". So I must admit I'm not giving him the credit that he deserves for actually going along with all of the things that happen because it's the expectation.

Exactly. I think the heroic thing gets drilled into our heads so much that we come to expect it, but not many people are really that selfless.

That is a nice message for the kiddies. You don't need to be all guns blazing to be a hero.

And now I feel ill from how sweet that was.

Yeah... all the heroic, main character, good guy things that Yugi did both (1) is expected by everyone and (2) is everywhere. A lot of cartoons (at least, 10-13 year old ones like Yuugioh) have the hero-always-wins-and-sometimes-grows-a-bit part. That might also be a reason why Yugi's growing and selflessness is overlooked: becuase people have seen it before elsewhere. Plus the card games and Yami Yuugi over shadow it too...

"You don't need to be all guns blazing to be a hero" True... aparently you just need card games and something to fight for 3nodding
