So, who else can't wait for friday???

I can wait.

It's not that I don't want the game, but I can't afford it, and I don't want to rush out and buy it full price on release day just to find out it's just another under-the-radar failure with broken game mechanics or something. I really want to play it, but $60 plus tax is not something I can spare right now on a potentially bad game, as much as I hope it's actually a very good game.

In short, I'm skeptical, and I'm waiting until the game is available used, for cheap.

And I was going to say this belongs in the Arts & Media subforum..... BUT we don't seem to have that subforum anymore, and I currently have no idea where this actually belongs. xp I'll move it once the subforum business gets sorted out...

I'm a gamer, and I work at a videogame store, I got the artbook for this game from work. I'm almost offended that it says "A GUIDE TO STEAMPUNK" on the front. The aesthetics are ghastly. In my opinion steampunk is pretty... that game is in no way shape or form pretty.
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. IT'S FREAKING UGLY and more fitted for the likes of dieselpunk, which is nice in it's own right. It just pissed me off. It's Ugly as hell and I wish they wouldnt slap the title of steampunk on every little thing. I get the point that it's all steam power, but it's all so ugly. I just can't get over it. I like pretty games.

"Pretty" steampunk? That's your opinion. You can't say "how dare they call it steampunk if it's not pretty!" because someone else, such as myself, is just as entitled to say "how dare you say steampunk must be pretty!" (And yes, I know you didn't actually say that, I'm paraphrasing) I happen to like a grittier, dirtier sort of steampunk, without all the fanciness, frill, and lace. I also don't like pretty games, but if a game is FUN then I'll play it regardless of subject matter or aesthetics.

...And what's with the random art pic of SMT: Devil Summoner?

It's not random, it's pretty.
And don't get me wrong, I do like my steampunk to be gritty, but that doesnt mean it can't be pleasing to the eyes. My Brand of steampunk is heavy in the Victorian era, which was all about ornate aesthetics. What my point is, is there is nothing ornate or aesthetically pleasing about this game.
Also I judge games by the look of them sometimes because I won't have any fun looking at dirt for 5 hours straight. I love fall out... but after playing it for an hour it wasn't fun anymore because it was all the same color and no matter where you go and what kind of new dirty little run down town you find they all look the same. I have to watch videos about this game and read about it because of my job, and It's ugly. I simply won't play it. It doesn't help that I almost exclusively play survival horror games either.

Instead of staring at dirt for 5 hours, try actually playing the game, it's a lot more fun like that. xp "Prettiness" should have nothing to do with how good a game is, except for the sheer addition of visual flair. Sure, they're called "video" games, but the game part is just as important, and to me it's the be-all, end-all part. If I passed on every game I though looked ugly, I'd miss out on a lot of fun games, and a lot of my favorite games would have never graced my consoles, PC or emulators. "Ugly" is something you should be able to look past... I like to think of games the way a lot of folks think of people, "It's not what's on the outside that counts, it's what's on the inside." Then again, I'm a programmer, and I value smooth, effective code over graphics any day. Heck, I'd sooner play a well-programmed text adventure game than a hacked-together and mangled third-person shooter (which are a dime a dozen at GameStop).

I find it sad you turn down potentially thrilling video games out of simple dislike of the graphical presentation. But, it's not my business why you play games, or how you decide which games are worthy of your time. confused

Pardon the intrusion, but I see there is at least one fan of the "Shin Megami Tensei" series?

Notch that up to two. cool

I tend to appreciate the older MegaTen games, personally. I've also read some of the manga (I think they might be Korean "manhwa" or whatever they call them in Korea). I first discovered it through Digital Devil Saga -- and the anime/movie of the same name -- and eventually rediscovered the franchise (?) when my RPG-obsessed friend got hooked on the Persona series.

I haven't actually played many of the games. I've been meaning to hunt down copies of some of the older ones (yes, as ROMs, since a lot of them were never translated and released in Western countries).

I usually feel the same way, too, but when buying the game isn't even an option (read: I'm always broke), if I download it, it's not like they're missing out on money I was going to give them anyway. Plus, I generally buy games used, which means NONE of the money from the purchase goes to the game devs at all. I'd much rather be able to play the developers directly for a copy of the game, possibly an autographed one (like how you buy CDs at small concerts from the band members themselves). Most of the profits from Game sales go to the retailers and the publishers. The developers already got paid before the development even began.

When I do manage to buy a game brand-new, I have to be absolutely 100% sure I'm going to love that game, because it will be the ONLY new game I buy for months.

eh, games dev isnt so great. i am on a games dev college course, the content is great, and versatile, but the industry itself is... difficult, as you have a risky income (your income relies on a game selling well, so if you spend 2 years making a game that sells 10 copies, your out of a job)

personally, im taking the skills i have to the movie industry, as pay is much more secure. (and unlike games, i can make a movie, then spend two hours watching it, with a game, you spend years making it, then by the time your finished, you are so bored of it you never want to play it)

Those complaining about the art style need to bear two things in mind.

1. Art is in the eye of the beholder, what isn't steampunk to one can be steampunk to another

2. The game is still in development, and much like Borderlands, the art style can very likely change.

I do agree though that calling the art book a "guide to steampunk" is kind of, arrogant.

If anything a book with that title should talk a bit about the culture, give some recommended media, and some basic project ideas.

Indeed. biggrin

Kurisu, you are indeed wise.
as far as fallout, and all the other gritty looking generic games that are out, including Damnation, I've seen less dirt in digdug.
I'm not going to waste my time and money on a game, just because they slap the title of steampunk on it. There are way better games to waste my time and money on.
