Quite frankly, I think it's about time this guild had an overhaul, back to the docks for a refit and new coat of paint.

In terms of the 'new coat of paint' I really want to spruce up the visuals of this guild, particularly on the front page. Really nice attractive banners and the like, make this guild a proud, shining beacon of steampunk. More detail below.

The sub-forums are need of an overhaul, which I will give them all as soon as I can. It will be chaotic, as I intend to reorder them in a much more logical manner (and a few may change function). Unfortunately, there is no simple means to do this, and as such forums will have to be renamed, and then threads moved one by one accordingly.
For a brief time, this will lead to a lot of threads being where they are not supposed to be. However, I assure you it will be worth it.
Significant benefits include:

- Sub-forums being placed in a more logical order (rather than all over the place, as they are now.
- More clarity as to where your thread is supposed to go.
- Ease of finding the sort of threads/discussions you are after.
- (Theoretically) more reason to use the sub-forums, increasing their activity and worth overall.
- They sub-forums will make more sense (put simply).

In a nutshell: Chaos will briefly ensue, followed by shiny new sub-forums.

NOTE!

I've begun to sort things out, and in the process (as per Mylian's suggestion) have made one sub-forum for the sole discussion of the written word. In the process, a number of other subforums (specifically: Steampunk Shopping, Arts and Crafts, and Arts and Media) have been altered as well.

There is now:

the Library - for the discussion of steampunk samples of the written word, books, short stories, poetry etc.

the Theatre - for all manner of visual steampunk delights, television, film, ...

the Museum - for discussion of more physical embodiments of steampunk; such as steampunk modifications of everyday items, machines, devices, sculptures, art.

the Shopping Arcade - purely things you can buy, be this to flaunt your own goods, or to point other members in the directions of shops catering for steampunk tastes (be it fashion or otherwise).

the Factory - where you can discuss anything steampunky that you, or other members, have made (no matter what it is) - e.g. items of clothing, art.

I accept there is overlap (especially with regards to things you've made); but I hope this is the best arrangement. If anyone has any suggestions, I would love to hear them (PM is preferred).

Whilst some threads may not be where they are supposed to be, I encourage all of you in creating new threads where they belong. Everything will be moved eventually.

The provisional new order for the subforums is:

Quote:
- General Discussion [Central Section]
- Books etc. [Library]
- Film etc. [Theatre]
- Art, Physical Things, etc. [Museum]
- Shopping (inc. Fashion) [Shopping Arcade]
- Things members made [Factory]
- Supernatural Steampunk
- Steampunk Gaia
- Steampunk Charity
- Graphic Novel
- Role-playing
- Character Profiles
- Science!
- Non-steampunk discussion
- Geographical
- Chatterbox

Note, all steampunk discussions are at the the top; with discussion of things first before moving down to 'projects' (Charity + Comic), before role-playing and science (which acts as transition between steampunk and non-steampunk); before going on to non-steampunk discussion. Chatterbox at the bottom for accessibility and out-of-the-way-ness.

Before I get started, does anyone have any thoughts of objections?
PostPosted: Fri May 22, 2009 12:38 am

No objections, I quite like the idea.

Let me know if there is anything I can help with (namely, moving threads from one subforum to the next, perhaps?). I don't want to hop in unannounced and end up mucking things up. Two chaoses don't make an order...

Your assistance in moving threads would be much appreciated.

Basically, I'll be renaming the forums at all once; and then will simply be the task of carefully moving every thread to where it belongs. Some may be missed at first, but I'm sure they'll get picked up on eventually.

Would anyone be interested in a sub-forum for 'Supernatural Steampunk' - i.e. for discussion with regards to the addition of magic, vampires, etc. in steampunk?

Wonderful!

Right, any last thoughts or objections before I change all the sub-forums?
PostPosted: Wed May 27, 2009 3:00 am

SO glad to hear this is a work in progress because, okay, this is really lame to admit, but I am a bit OCD and I was getting a little antsy in the "Library." I kept seeing peoples' crafty things and being bothered that they belonged in Factory, etc. I mean like bothered to the point of physical distraction.

It is SO dumb, because, you would never know it... I mean, I have a messy room, but CERTAIN things... like I alphabatize my DVDs and put my books according to genre and when they are wrong it is almost HURT... it is so stupid. Anyway, I am so glad. mrgreen Sounds like a slendid plan. I am a moderator in 3 guilds and own one little one, so should you ever need assistance (I know... I am NEW, so really, I am not meaning to be one of those O HAI, I CAN BE CREW NOW!!! people, but if you wanted, ah, house keeping type help in the future...) feel free to ask.

The sub-forums have now all been renamed (and two new ones bought), and will be fulfilling their new functions as soon as all the threads have been moved to where they now belong.

Please bare with us, as it may take some time for absolutely every thread to find itself where it's now supposed to be.

Sub-forum names may undergo minor changes.

One thing I'd really like to do — particularly over the summer when I will have far too much time on my hands — is re-vamp the visuals of this guild. I have quite grand plans forming in my mind, including a new guild banner and a new front page image - which will be incorporating a directory to all the different subforums (spiffy, no?).

To help with this, I am looking for any artists who would be willing to help with this project. Whilst I can hopefully manage to do the banners and such (such as they are), one of the things I would really like to add to the guild are pieces of art.
Most notably, an illustration of the guild-city itself; but also portraits of notable members. If possible, short comics for each of the sub-forums would be good too.

If anyone is interested in helping, either reply below or PM me.
Likewise, if anyone has any other thoughts of input please do share them. This is your guild as much as mine, seems only fair you get a say in what it looks like.

Ok, I just realised I missed of steampunk games completely when I re-did all the sub-forums.

hmm....

If I just added it in, it would make the first few sub-forums as follows:
Quote:
- Books
- Film/Television
- Art
- Games
- Shopping
- Making things

But now I'm starting to wonder if its worth combining a few of them; for instance mixing 'Film/Television' and 'Art' to make 'Visual Steampunk' - or even 'Books' and 'Film/Television' to make 'Steampunk Storytelling'. There seem to be too many options, and I am at a loss of what to do...

Advice?

EDIT: more thoughts

With steampunk, it's a rather knotty thing. The most obvious part of steampunk is the literature; so one wonders if that should deserve a sub-forum of it's own. However, should that then include graphic novels? I think, yes. But now we've put "Just words" and "Words with Pictures" together, would it not also make sense to put "Words with Moving Pictures" together — this creating a sub-forum for Books, Comics and Film. I quite like this idea, but I know some people wanted books to be separate.

What I propose is this, that we have sub-forums for the following:

- Steampunk that tells a 'proper' story; be it a book (or poem), graphic novel, film, or even internet short.
- 'Static' Steampunk art pieces, such as both illustrations and physical objects.
- Interactive steampunk; that is to say - games (computer, RPG, board etc.)
- Steampunk you can buy [ignoring books etc., obviously] which will mostly be fashion.
- Steampunk things you have made, or want to make. e.g. 'Hey, look at this gun I made'; or 'How would I make a steampunk belt?'. Hands on steampunk, if you will. What users have made or want to make only - what other people made can go into the 'Art pieces' section.

Summary!

I propose the first five sub-forums be replaced as follows.

Quote:
- Stories
- Arts
- Games
- Buyables
- Making things.

NB: Classification of threads (i.e. where they should do) is based on intent. E.g., a thread saying 'Oh, look at this ray-gun!' would go in art; but 'How would I make this ray-gun?' goes in making things.

EDIT II: Great, now where do I put music. ¬_¬
Doesn't seem to be enough of it to warrant a whole sub-forum; should I put it in with either the stories or the arts?

EDIT III: I have another possibility, making the first sub-forum for 'Entertainment' - i.e. for books, comics, films, and music. This gets round the placing problem, but is this sub-forum too vague?
Maybe; but I feel if I had to split some, I'd have to split them all and create needlessly specific sub-forums (especially if films of books then have to be in separate sub-forums).

Especially when you consider a musical - story, visuals, music - being all together; should not all these parts be in the same sub-forum? I say yes.

Ok, methinks this is a pretty serious issue now with the various forms of media steampunk can take (and I am rather disgruntled at myself for not reasoning this would be a problem sooner, and for overlooking both music and games so easily).

The problem areas are as follows:

Books etc.
Comics
Moving Pictures
Music
Still Pictures
Sculpture etc.

the problem being how best to group them in the sub-forums; currently it stands at:

- Entertainment: books, comics, moving pictures, music
- Art: Still Pictures, Sculpture

The issue with this being I worry the first one is too vague. Naturally this suggests that they be split up into various sub-forums, but I fear if I give one its own sub-forum, I would have to do the same for all the others, and 1 sub-forum will become 4. This seems particularly silly if you consider that things such as music have relatively very little to be discussed.

This may not seem to be a problem, but it does rather spread things out a bit; perhaps too much considering you might have a book and film of the same story; and a musical combines books, film and music!

So basically: How do you want them (i.e. the 'problem areas') grouped?
