I've heard that the Wii will be HD capable soon, however I don't know if that means a new accessory... magical firmware update, or considering it's Nintendo most likely a new iteration of the Wii (god I hope not). Whatever they do I'll be happy to have HD finally, but I will be pissed if it involves buying another Wii.

The Wii will never be in true HD. No matter what they do the system can't handle it.

Nintendo has a contract for the displays to be in retail locations for 5-6 years (depending on the company). We still have over 2 years to go on those contracts.
The only changes (besides updates) that you may eventually see in that time is a bundle change or a color change. But as of this moment, they are following the "if it isn't broken, don't fix it" policy. Only until recently have the Wiis been sitting on shelves, and that's because of 2 factors; the economy and the size of the install base.

I wouldn't buy a brand new console just because it has HD. Most useless thing ever.
