In Final Fantasy 3 DS, there is a scene where Aria, the priestess, is killed. The question racing through my mind: why don't you use pheonix down, you have like 5.
The question is even stronger to why Cloud didn't use pheonix down on Aerith. Even though Aerith was the white mage, any of them could have used a feather of pheonix down.
So why wouldn't they use it?

So, in FFV, there's a scene where one character is fatally wounded, and the charcters try everything - potion, elixer, pheonix down, whatever - and are unable to save/revive the one character. I've since come up with a theory that pheonix downs only work if you're on the verge of death, and are really just super potent potions, not actually a miracle producer (like, FFtactics, you only have 3 turns to revive your killed party members). Or if you'd prefer, there's this option...

Because Phoenix Downs only revive you from being KOed. I guess they're like smelling salts...which is an item that gets rid of confusion...
But, point is, when you use a Phoenix Down on your characters, it works because they aren't fatally wounded, just KOed.

KO = Knocked Out
Or was there some other meaning to 'KO' too? stare Can't remember. But being hit to zero hit points at fight isn't same as being killed in game.

Phoenix downs revive unconscious characters NOT dead ones.
Knocked out does not equal dead.

If I remember correctly there is a way you can bring Aerith back to life. I think you have to find the right Items and bring them to the Traveler. Then you go to her body and she's revived. Or something like that. Or at least, that's what I've been told.

There is absolutely no way to bring her back except by using a cheating device like a GameShark. But yes, in-game, "dead" characters are actually knocked out. Which makes me wonder, do people usually get knocked out from getting cut up with a sword or whatever? Unless it's from blood loss, I guess.

Oh....Then I need to tell my friend Chris that he's wrong. :] Thanks for telling me. Hm.....it's possible to die from blood loss, is it possible to die form all the magic? If it were fire, wouldn't you stop drop and roll? XDD

I've heard all kinds of ways to get Aerith back, but from what I've read of interviews with the makers and stuff, Aerith was always intended to be dead for good.
OMG, could you imagine some kind of reaction command to fire? Press triangle to stop-drop-roll.

I'm sure Aerith was suppose to be dead to get the story moving and to get Cloud the way he is today...
The way I see it, Phoenix Down is an item made specially only for the gamers during the battle scenes, because really, we don't want to lug a dead character around the world map unable to heal them...
If you really want to put resurrection into the storylines, the best bet would be to get the Phoenix summoning which probably has the highest chance of resurrecting someone (though highly not guaranteed). Too bad you usually get it after the character's completely dead...
Otherwise, necromancy sounds like a good idea... xd

I mean, they can't die in an ordinary battle and then just be there for the battle, because they show up in later storyline-scenes. I mean, you can't exactly have a cutscene with a character who's supposed to be dead. And man, zombie!Aerith would be incomprehensibly awesome.
