I felt it was really important to make a separate thread for this, as I don't think a whole lot of people pay attention to the S.F.Q. for discussions.

This is a place to brainstorm ideas for Graduates. We've already gotten some ideas from members, but the Heads haven't been able to really tie this together. All members are welcome to add their opinions on this, because if you stay here long enough, you may end up graduating Hogwarts. And then what'll you do? o_o

List of Graduate Possibilities being discussed:
- wizard ages/graduate master list
- jobs/shops
- new subforums? (Hogsmeade?)
- homes/families
- multi-dimensional graduate subforum (forum combining role-play, shops, discussion?, etc.)

I can't remember what all the ideas are yet, if there's something I missed, post about it and I'll add it to the list.

As I have stated before, I believe that making Hogsmeade a subforum would be easiest. It would allow people to create their own shops without worry, wander into a different part of Hogsmeade and let it be a different part, for example: I'm in the joke shop, then decide to go to Honeydukes...I wouldn't have to coexist with the conversations going on in the joke shop.

Also, it would be a place that graduates could call their own, somewhere else for them to post when they are no longer able to access their common rooms.(That is I mean, If they create shops)

In addition to Summer's idea, which I think is good, after students graduate, they should be able to come back as their same characters for teaching classes, but if they already have a prior teaching OC, they can keep it if they want too. And maybe a 'teachers' sub-forum. :/

Personally, I think that Summer's idea is great. It makes sense. Open Hogsmeade next term maybe, and get rid of the old one. Just specify that Hogsmeade is for rp purposes only. If you were to make it a sub-forum, I suggest that you make a graduate-only topic in it. One where the graduates can rp amongst themselves and discuss things to do with their shops and the up-keep of Hogsmeade in general. Kind of like the Staff Room in the Classrooms sub-forum.

I'm not sure if this would make it too complicated, but once a student has graduated, they could make a back story where they've gotten married and had a kid. They could create a new character, or on other words, once Sam Algorith graduates, she married John Smitty, and has a girl name...Georgia Smitty, and I could continue to role play in the school but as a different character. While I could still rp Sam Algorith in Hogsmade or a teacher. Also, changing the last name is not necessary, just an example. Then using Katie's idea that there could be a grads-only topic, Sam Algorith will probably not end up having a conversation with her daughter.
PostPosted: Tue Jun 30, 2009 9:05 pm

I think that Sam's idea is good, but would be an optional thing. A person could invent their own back story and live according as such, but would that mean that they would have control over (in Sam's case) two more people? I mean, that's fine with me, but I think it would make it a bit complicated. Though people in the guild can't very well marry one another, especially with the lack of guys. I guess we could do what we did with the teachers and make avi's of our kids and husbands/wives and such. Actually, I kind of like it. It would expand rp by a longs shot. It could be really fun, actually. Let's invent another hypothetical situation.
Okay so Jane Smith just graduated. She is in Hogsmeade and general store with her husband. So here's Jane:
She's a simple girl. Good at magic and good looking.
User Image
And she married John Doe:
He's a wizard, too. They went to Hogwarts together and dated for 7 years. They opened the shop together.
User Image
And they had a daughter named Sally Doe:
She's pretty and attends Hogwarts. She helps around the shop when she can.
User Image
Okay, so let's say that I'm Jane originally. If I don't get to still be an honor year, would I play my kid at Hogwarts? And would I just post whichever person I wanted to be in each post? OOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHH!!!! There are houses in Hogsmeade! How about a new topic for each family's house..... I'm just brainstorming, I really don't know........ But I think if we were to set up little families like this, there should be an introduction like this post.

Katie's got something.
I really didn't intend for your spouse to be married, but that's fine too. I also like the idea of Hogsmade houses. So like the Doe family, where the family would post/visit friends, so sally could rp that she ran up to her room, and rp that she heard the door bell ring.
And the info beginning post could also have a family crest, or what their house looks like.

There's something that's bothering me though.
If we do this, would the daughters/sons be house elves, or be immediately sorted into a house?
There's that we were house elves were because we just joined, but we wouldn't have already joined, so...
PostPosted: Wed Jul 01, 2009 10:45 am

Well I don't know. We didn't just join, so I don't see why we'd be House Elves again. But then again, that is part of the whole guild experience. But it isn't like we're a new person, just a new character. Being sorted immediately would mean new requirements though, right??? Or would it? I mean, that would make everything kind of perpetual. You know, Jane and John have Sally, Sally and Bob (just making this up on the spot) have Robert, Robert and Mandy have Timmy and Kitty, see? It could go on forever. I think Hogsmeade would get kind of full. Unless our original characters die of old age, or a heart attack or something. Then we could continue forever and ever. Killing off people and rping as their kids. Then we just delete their houses. It would cut down overpopulation in Hogsmeade. (I know it sounds kind of terrible after I read it over, but I don't know how to express it in a less horrible fashion.)

Yes, I agree about the whole house elf thing. And yes, I'm okay with the whole dieing off. I mean, half of the role playing experience is death. But instead of deleting threads, there's also the possibility of a family house, like When Sam has grandkiddies, they grow up in the same house. There's also the merge of families. So if Sam's daughter marries an active rp boy, then after Sam dies, the Algorith house thread will be deleted. Because she had a daughter, and her daughter's last name was no longer Algorith, or what ever Sam's husband's name was.
So, like this:
[insert Sam's pic here]
Sam had a daughter, May Smitty, [Smitty will be Sam's new last name]
User Image
May then gets married, and her last name changed to Fawcet.
Since there was no boys to keep the last name Smitty, the Smitty family tree/topic would be end/deleted when Sam and her hubby died.

I think that that is a great idea. It cuts down on overpopulation, definitely. We'll just have to see what the mods think. If they like the idea, then maybe they'll use it next term. I have a few questions regarding all of our ideas though.
[1] In the houses, would there be a rules post and all that jazz that's in other new topics? I mean, it's kind of a different situation.
[2] Would the students visiting Hogsmeade on field trips be allowed in the houses. (Like could I, as a student, visit my good friend Jane?)
[3] That presents another problem. Once you graduate, you're not just automatically married. That's not how things work. With the lack of guys in the guild, we can't have any kind of dating at Hogwarts. (Plus it's kind of weird to have a fake online relationship.) So we'd have to make up a bunch of characters for, let's say Jane, to date and break up with and such. Eventually she'd get married, right? You know, make it a process. That seems complicated to me.
[4] Speaking on number three. If you just graduate at the age of 17, and then let's say you immediately make up a back story where you are 22. What happened to those five years? Plus, let's say Jane has a friend named Molly Jones. They were in the same year. If Molly makes a backstory when she graduates where she's 30, then we have a problem. Unless Molly took an aging potion somewhere along the way, she can't be older than Jane. But we don't all want to have to base our stories around one persons, right? It doesn't seem fair to me to base one person's story around whoever posts their backstory first and sets how old everyone is. There would have to be a set age already in the rules of the sub-forum. I think we'd have to make it a process from age 17 up if we didn't want to set an age in the rules, complicated as it may be.
(Did any of that make sense to anyone other than me?)

On the Numbers

1: There should be a 'rules of the house post', or in other words, what people can/cannot do in that house, so no running in the foyer, no jumping on the beds, but also include other rp rules, so each house will be different in the way they are strict. For one thing, the Smiths could have a rule that you don't talk to someone older then you until they talk to you first, and the Smitty's could have a rule of free expression.
2:I don't think students should be able to visit the houses, because the students should not be in the residential area in the first place.
3:Okay, I think that making up a whole new character to date/married is kind of crazy. In all, we could just use them when we need to, like When Sally wants to hug her daddy, or ask him a question, but not really using him for every thing.
4: Yes, we need aging rules. I think this is good one: You must wait the 2 weeks after graduating. That will be the 'dating' period. During the 'dating' period, your newly graduate character will 'date' and do things someone who just finished school would do. After the 'dating' period, you have the option to keep 'dating', or get 'married' later. But after the dating period, you become 20, no matter if you 'marry' or keep 'dating'. So we keep everyone the same age. Then every term, your graduated character ages 10 years.
This won't be consistent with the students, but if we let the grads age with the students, they'll be around forever. So, if Sam graduates in the Summer term, after her dating period, she'd be twenty, and at the end of the Fall term, she'd be 30.

This is getting kinda complicated, but it does make sense. biggrin I like the idea. I wonder what the other grads and/or mods think? Ann, Rayne, Juni...anyone else I'm forgetting sweatdrop (Alutian? Is she still around? ninja ).

[[Allutian is still around.]]

Also, more from brain storming with Katie:

Exactly, and just like in real life, if the girl takes her fiance's name, then her maiden name is poof. And I really don't want to get into multiple kids, so there'd be no siblings. But students could still have Aunts and Uncles on their 'imaginary' parent's side. So if Sam ever married, it probably wouldn't be an active student now, but an imaginary man.
Oh..another problem just popped into my mind.
How will the children be sorted? Because if we answer the sorting hat test the same way that we did when we were first sorted..or, a solution to that is rp sorting hat test, aka, make up your character for the test, so instead of you personally answering the questions, your character would.
And I guess your [children] characters would just post in their families houses until the sorting hat opens again.
PostPosted: Wed Jul 01, 2009 2:38 pm

On the numbers again.
3: I was thinking that. It is crazy, but I meant that that way we would just have control of another person, but not in the 'main character' sense. Like I said earlier, the characters would need to be represented by tekteks or pictures or something, to make it less confusing. I wasn't thinking the married couple of two characters as two real characters. I meant that if say, Jane had to "go away on business" there would still be someone to rp with, but only as more of a backup than an extension. Just to spice up life a little.
On Kitty's post.
Trust me, we all know it's insane.
On the post above me.
The we'd have to rp the tests. I'd suggest though, answering some of the questions truthfully. Look at the situation in the books. Everyone in the Black family always made and wanted Slytherin. If Jane was a Ravenclaw, and her husband was a Gryffindor, then Sally would share their traits. I'm not saying that she couldn't be a Hufflepuff or Slytherin, but that most likely she'd be either Gryffindor or Ravenclaw, since that's what her parents were. Now there are instances where a child like Sirius is born and get's the opposite house. That's fine too. What I'm really getting at is, DON'T just flat out lie on the sorting test. Just role play. Answer some questions truthfully and some not.

I just thought of something semi-brilliant, but off-topic!!!!!!!!!!!!! What if for graduation, you could pay for a graduation picture!!!!!!!!!!! (You know avi art signature.)
