First post of mine in a while, yay XP
So, whats your favorite steampunk band, and why? And if you feel line it, debate what is/is not steampunk about the bands.

To me, none of those bands play Steampunk music, cause there is no such thing. However, Abney Park employs the Steampunk LOOK the best. That said, I'm not a fan of their music.

This thread really belongs in the Arts & Media subforum. I'll let it sit here for a bit before I move it, but if another crew member decides to move it first, so be it.
I'm only familiar with the works of Abney Park and Dr. Steel. Hands down, I prefer Dr. Steel any day. I can listen to all 3 of his (released) albums in a row over and over, but with Abney Park, it's more pick-and-choose between the songs I really like, and the ones I skip over.
Neither are my true favorite musician/band, and I don't think I could even decide on a SINGLE favorite musician/band.

I have actually not heard the music of any of these yet. The first bands that I listen to (other than Classical that I figure Victorian people probably really listened to people play, maybe?) that I have ever heard someone label as possibly Steampunk, though, I am not sure I would completely agree are The Gothic Archies and Dresden Dolls. The Gothic Archies are basically, to me, the Series of Unfortunate Events band and those BOOKS are pretty anachronistically delightful and Steamy. Dresden Dolls, the only reason I can THINK they said that is the gear sounds in Coin Operated Boy? I dunno. Other than that, maybe The Aquabats? I don't know why. Some of their robot songs, I guess? Or the Goggles? Or the fact that they sometimes have a Blimp? I don't know. They just put me in a giggley mood, as does Steampunk. Like They Might Be Giants.

Wow, I think its really funny that nobody pays attention to what the artists say about the music. The music is influenced by steampunk, but is in actuality other genres. There really is no SP music. Ok, Dr. Steel claims to be steampunk, but really all he sings about is a toy factory. I like his stuff because it reminds me of Oingo Boingo mixed w/ the Beastie Boys, but I fail to see the steampunk in a latex 1950's style labcoat. Arcattack is probably the closest thing I have seen to actual steampunk music, but most of the stuff they play is themesongs to 8-Bit videogames... Are White Zombie and the Misfits horror music? Should we call country music Drama? See, it seems kind of silly huh?

Should we call country music Drama? See, it seems kind of silly huh? I pay attention to what the artists say about the music. Abney Park flat out says, "Look at us, we're STEAMPUNK! We play Steampunk Music!" Of course, what the artists think they're doing doesn't necessarily mean that's what they're actually doing. Voltaire could call himself a rapper, but unless he raps and makes rap music, he's not a rapper. I don't think any of us are actually saying that Steampunk is a type of music, rather we are relating which bands remind us of steampunk, or give us the same type of feeling as steampunk. Maybe music that sounds like something you'd hear if you lived in a steampunk world. That said, I don't think Dr. Steel is even CLOSE to "steampunk music," and I think he's just throwing the word around to get more notice from people like us, who hear about him almost solely due to this claim. Still love his music, though. And it's a funny thing you mention White Zombie and horror music, because my dad is a big Rob Zombie fan and he always referred to it as "horror themed." But he included GWAR and death metal and other dark or gothic sounding bands to be "horror themed." He always said that listening to Rob Zombie was like watching a horror movie without actors, cameras, or scripts, and that was why he liked them so much. I think that's the same way most of us see this "steampunk music" anomaly, but I can't really speak for anyone but myself. EDIT: Huh, if you check the Wikipedia page for White Zombie, one of the listed genres is "Horror punk," which doesn't link. There is a horror punk listing though, right here: LINK.

Keith Valken Lionheart To me, none of those bands play Steampunk music, cause there is no such thing. Personally, I think there can be steampunk music - e.g. something that uses steam gadgetry - even if no-one has actually performed any yet. That said, I believe that the music can still evoke a theme of steampunk, and the term 'steampunk' may be applied (even if not in a musical sense). By the same token, a song may be steampunk (look to 'The Doctor's Wife', which describes steam-power keeping someone alive) as much as any book can; and the band itself can also be steampunk (following from taking Steampunk as a subculture; much as Punk is considered both music genre and subculture). In short: I believe steampunk can apply to numerous things - not just books or films - bands and pieces of music being one of them. ~ In other news, I'm most fond of Abney Park and the Clockwork Quartet. AP being something which just seems to work immensely well for me (being able to listen to their songs constantly); and CQ being simply splendid.

I must disagree, because in the end, they'll end up sounding like any other genre, and no one would consider them Steampunk. True, a song might have Steampunk lyrics, or they dress Steampunk, in which case the band adopts the Steampunk subculture on their personae, but their music still isn't steampunk. The Doctor's Wife, one of the FEW songs I like from Abney Park, is still gothic gypsy-ish.
Which is why I said Abney Park is the one that looks the most Steampunk, but their music just doesn't strike me as Steampunk.

Sir, I think you misinterpreted me; that's more-or-less what I just said (although I still think they could be considered steampunk, even if their music is not). Their music is not steampunk (although 'tis theoretically possible). But they (AP, CQ etc.) are still steampunk for their lyrics, personas etc. Also, The Doctor's Wife is a Clockwork Quartet song. Are you thinking of 'the Emperor's Wives'?

I don't believe Emilie Autumn fits precisely into the 'Steampunk' category, does she? I'm aware her style is altered-Victorian, and some of her fans are 'Steamers' (If you'll pardon my expression), but does she herself fit into that category?
In relation to the opening statement, I recently found Abney Park and love it dearly. As for the others, the 'Clockwork Quartet' sounds delightful!

But, Abney Park is always a steamy-favorite of mine! And I do endulge in a little bit of Dr. Steel from time-to-time. -bσυντριβεί servers σας- ζ

Dear Captain and fellow guild members, behold the Calliope! It is truly the one undeniable steampunk-style instrument. It surfaced in the mid-1800's and is quite literally a steam organ (or a steam piano). Similar to air in a typical pipe organ, the calliope pushes steam through pipes of various lengths, but due to the fundamental differences between air and steam, it gives off a noticeably different sound. Most of us have heard one play, it's that creepy carnival organ sound that you sometimes hear at carnivals, fairs, circuses, etc. But, it's not anachronistic at all, so to take it that one step further, you could always over-engineer one... some sort of Steampunk Phantom of the Opera. Perhaps, Phantom of the Carnival?
