Well, I finally got my hands on one of these wonderful blasters. Six rounds, fast, good distance, and accurate, and pretty easy to reload. Now, anyone reading this is likely wondering why I chose to post a thread about a toy foam dart gun. Well, here's your answer It's very moddable and as many can see it is VERY steampunkable. In fact I am considering doing a bit to the one I acquired for a western steampunk outlaw get up I have in my head, though the issue is getting started. The pullback cocking mechanism even allows for firing like an old school revolver. Suggestions and tips for such a thing would be highly appreciated.

I've got a pair of them i've been wanting to mod myself. My only question is what kind of paint to use. Would a simple primer be enough to keep paint from flaking off? I want to be able to carry these things around, not just have em sitting on a shelf because i'm afraid to touch them. I've poked around a bit for info on other sites but i haven't yet found anything useful. Does anyone have any advice? smile

Then I used a fine sandpaper on the gun, then primer, then used brass spray paint for bass and then wint from there.

Thank you so much for the info. Now i can finally get started! biggrin

Same here. I may use a primer as well for added assurance.
May see if I can make a leather holster as well.

I don't have a Maverick, per se, but I have one of those knock-offs called a Tek-10. I want to mod it some time this summer, but cannot for the life of me find brass spray paint.

Krylon produces a line of paint called "Krylon Fusion" that is specifically formulated to bond with plastic surfaces without any sanding or primer, but there's no guarantee you'll find the color you want and it's probably a bit more expensive than other products.
I've been meaning to pick up a $15 airsoft gun and give it a bit of a mod. It'd require a bit more modding than a Nerf gun, though, since airsoft models generally resemble actual modern firearms and would look too modern (to be steampunk) and too realistic (to use as a costume prop). I'd also like to keep it functional, just because I feel that for-show-only props and reproductions aren't NEARLY as cool as fully-functional ones.
