Tick, tock. Tick, tock. The second hand on the face of Leon’s kitchen clock moved ever so slowly in his eyes. He couldn’t help but be impatient; it was the first day of his new job being the official babysitter for Mara and Grace. He had in no way willingly agreed to this monstrous task set for him—four children was much more than he could handle--yet Mara had declared that at 8pm, the children would be at his door. The girl hung up so abruptly that he hardly had time to catch his breath. He couldn’t just leave the brats alone; god knows the two mothers would prefer to bring the four with them rather than pass up a trip to the bar. He had learnt this when the two met, placed Lucien in his care, and ran off before Leon could hardly blink.

Now, Lucien was a good kid, there was no doubt about that. The boy was quite easily to please, and found the strangest ways to stay occupied—which fortunately didn’t threaten his apartment. Lucien was one thing, yet now there were 4 children at hand: catastrophe seemed to be imminent. The minute hand was already positioned at 5 past eight and Leon was beginning to grow increasingly irritated at the situation. It was Friday night and there were countless better things he could be doing. The enticing thought of classy bars and the beautiful women that frequented them caused his frustration to increase dramatically.

Before Leon’s train of thought could proceed further the doorbell rang sending a tremor through the man’s body. He sighed unhappily and proceeded with heavy steps to the door, opening it briskly with a sense of suppressed anger.

“Good evening,” he said as flatly as he could possibly muster.

"Leo, as emotionally constipated as ever," Grace guffawed, her chin raised defiantly as she took a step forward. It wasn't an insult, really; more of a provocative statement to shift the mood from boring. She ruffled the wealth of Jasper's white-and-black tresses -- barely contained in a red hair tie -- and gestured for Lucien to enter with her free hand. The boy, who had been tangibly pouting, brightened at the sight of Leon and stretched out two proportionately excited arms.

"Leeeooo!"

Grace, who had growled and pointedly rolled her eyes, pulled at the sleeves of her faded hoodie and swaggered forward, her ripped jeans tearing underneath her heels. Jasper followed closely behind with an expression that echoed frustration and displeasure at the prospect of even being here; forget the fact that he was barely stringing coherent sentence together, this kid was pissed and it was obvious. Grace, who had moved to lean a dirty elbow against the wall, raised an eyebrow at the white-eyed boy who had stretched forward, hesitated and smiled a louche smile before saying:

"You look like a person's a**."

Leon’s jaw dropped as he gaped at this strange, silver-haired child’s comment. As Leon stared down in shock, Mara emerged in the doorway and put her hand on Jasper’s head.

“Yo,” she said brightly, grinning innocently. “Grace is raising him to be a straight-shooter.”

Mara ruffled the boy’s hair before stepping into the apartment, the twins trailing directly behind her. Tristan dashed towards Leon and latched himself onto his leg in his best attempt at a hug. Zephyrus followed Mara’s steps, hiding behind her and peering out at the group from behind the woman’s leg. It wasn’t a particularly brilliant hiding spot, because on that night Mara had decided to wear skinny jeans, so his attempt to shield himself from view was wasted.

“Guess what, Leon!” Tristan said much too loudly for an ‘indoor voice.’ “Mama and Grace are going to get shmamed!”

“They’re going to get what?” Leon yelped loudly. He found himself becoming slightly dizzy at the thought of these people having children in their care.

“Like I said,” Mara said flatly, helping herself to an apple from the fridge. “Straight-shooter. Want anything, Grace?”

"No," Grace replied meditatively, shifting her gaze to Tristan. "Apparently we're getting both smashed and hammered-- of course, I'm not complaining, but if you'd like to object, Leo? Hum?" She moved to stare pointedly at Leon, her arms crossed over her chest and her chin raised defiantly.

Jasper looked dolefully at Mara, his expression still screaming unadulterated umbrage at the situation. It took him a moment to notice the shyer of the two twins peering timorously from behind his mother's leg, doe-eyed and meek; well, it would be a travesty for him not to antagonize the child. The situation in and around itself was so beautifully constructed it was almost a piece of art.

"You're such a baby," he said bitingly, his lips puckered and his hands on his hips. "Baby, baby, bay-ay-by."

Lucien scrunched his face at Jasper, biting his tongue between his teeth and squashing a finger against his nose, his expression reminiscent of a run-over bulldog. "You're such a jerk-face," he said ruefully, sucking in a breath and looking up at Leon. He raised his arms above his head, artlessly jejune before asking:

"Up? Up? Uuuuup?"

Mara glanced at Grace after an unsuccessful attempt to pry off the small boy who was clinging to her calf with all his might. Jasper’s comment did nothing to calm Zephyrus’ separation anxiety. Tristan shot the sharp-tongued toddler a sinister glare which read “don’t even try.” Zephyrus examined the situation silently. Even if Leon was there, he did not want to stay in the midst of Jasper’s wrath even for a second. Though Leon treated him well, Zephyrus had the comprehension that children made him obviously uncomfortable-especially those of the cabbage variety.

The man in question examined the interaction between the two boys with caution. There was tension in the air, and he felt that if he didn’t lift Lucien up immediately, the white haired boy would hit him, and from the way he presented himself hit him hard. He wasted no time in hoisting the kid up onto his shoulders, resting his palms on the boy’s legs to support his perch.

Mara took another bite of the apple and looked to Grace. “Shall we head out?” she said, readying herself to leave. Zephyrus let out a meek squeak at this, digging his tiny nails into Mara’s leg.

“Ow!” Mara yelped, jerking her leg up and taking the tiny cherub with her. Mara lifted her leg up to a position where she could attempt to pry off the child without losing her balance.

“Honey,” she said impatiently yet in a hushed tone so the other children wouldn’t hear. “You have to let go. Everything will be fine, Leon will look after you. You like Leon, right? He’ll make sure Jasper’s nice, okay?”

Zephyrus loosened his grip slightly at the assurance, unfortunately gullible. He nodded, and swung off of Mara’s leg to walk to stand beside his brother in front of Leon.

Lucien hugged his arms around Leon's neck and rested his chin against the top of his head, all checkered scarf and innocence and those doe, heterochromic eyes before throwing himself forward and waving a frantic hand at Zephyrus. "It's okay, it's okay, don't worry about Jasper, he's just a Meanie McMean jerk face -- we can play some games like tag or pretend or patty cake."

Jasper clicked his tongue casually at Lucien, unamused by his attempt to comfort the twin. He rolled his eyes and began taking his heavy knot of white hair out, tugging the red band from his tresses and flicking it at his brother with a smug smile. Lucien rolled his face once more, his teeth pushing over his lower lip and his eyes squeezing shut; it was then that he bleeeeeh'd humourlessly at his lesser bred brother, unimpressed. His brother's droll gibes, which had slowly evolved from solely pertaining to him being a girl to a much wider vocabulary of insults, rarely perturbed him anymore. At least he tried to look as cool and unperturbed as possible.

Grace watched on, unconcerned, before nodding brusquely towards her own children. "Later, kids. Give Leo hell -- maybe he'll wake up more interesting."

Leon stood motionless as the door slammed behind the two women, the sound echoing through the apartment. “Great,” Leon muttered under his breath, attention turning to the pinch of the red band ricocheting off of his neck. “Watch it!”

Leon firmly put his hand on Jasper’s head in an attempt to deter the boy from harassing his brother even further. Zephyrus looked up shyly at Lucien, a slight smile forming on his face. He nodded slowly, gaining a bit more confidence from the older boy’s fearless demeanour towards his nasty brother. Tristan bounded into the lounge room, taking the opportunity to explore Leon’s bachelor pad for anything fun. He examined an empty beer bottle, left in pristine condition on the coffee table. Losing interest quickly, he shifted his attention to opening cupboards and whatever hidden compartment he could find.

It took Jasper a moment to realize exactly what was happening, and when he finally did realize, well, he just wasn't pleased at all; as if acting on instinct, Jasper shrieked in aggravated fury and bit down on the offending hand, simultaneously thwarting any efforts of escape by wrapping his small (but surprisingly strong) hands around Leon's wrist; it was then that he yowled his hardest, entirely red-faced and copiously drooling, his feet kicking and stamping in tantrum-rage before he sucked in a deep breath and yelled, much like air-raid siren:

"GET OFF MY FAAAAAAAAAAAAAACE!"

Lucien rolled his eyes at his brother's anger seizure and wiggled against Leon's shoulders, determined to face Zephyrus comfortably. "Wha' would yoo like to play?" he asked around his thumb, yumming it happily. "I haff some yoo-ee-corns in my wuffsack if yoo like thum."

He fixed Zephyrus with a meditative smile, pulling his thumb from his mouth with a wet pop before returning it to Leon's neck. His attention as consistent as a broken telephone line, Lucien turned distractedly to Tristan and frowned at his loud and disreputable rummaging: obviously no one had told his that it was rude to so obnoxiously go through someone else's belongings. The boy leant backwards, his balance scarcely falling in his favor, before chirping: "I don't think you should be doing that," his voice was all work and no play, stern and not at all at the age it should be -- which, given his actual age, was hilarious in itself. "That doesn't belong to you."

Leon’s eyes widened as the pain set in: Jasper had very very sharp teeth.

“AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH!”

Leon jerked backwards, attempting to rid his now drenched hand from Jasper’s wrath. In his fury to escape the pain, he lost his centre of gravity which in turn caused him to lose his hold on the boy perched on his shoulders.

Tristan and Zephyrus both stopped what they were doing to watch the mayhem with glossy eyes. Leon teetered dangerously; attempting to keep the tiny Lucien upright on his shoulders while Jasper, unwilling to let go, was lifted up by the force of Leon’s swaying body. The lanky man realized that if left to physics, he would fall backwards. Instinctively he let go of Lucien’s leg to grab hold of the couch arm to keep the three stable. Unfortunately, this caused Lucien to gain in momentum and lose his place. Zephyrus and Tristan squeezed shut their eyes (at the same time, of course) as Lucien came crashing down.

Thud.

It was almost like a horrible slow-motion replay; his fingers slipped from Leon's neck, the firm weight against his legs forswore and suddenly Lucien found himself airborne. He reached up his hands and desperately grasped for support that wasn't there, terrified and more than a little bewildered and, out of pure instinct, twisted his body on impact. The floor thudded and Lucien let out a fire-engine wail of jarring pain followed shortly by a gurgling wheeze, twisting like a suffocating fish. It was then that Jasper, who in spite of everything found himself in a very good mood, rushed forward to kneel beside his brother who was now making small huffing noises that may or may not have been please not a wedgie.

The room was suddenly thrown into a strange sort of quiet and awkward -- the quietness of confusion and upset and not knowing what to say in the vacuum afterward. Jasper had placed a hand behind Lucien's back and was gracelessly helping into a sitting position and both children were glaring daggers at Leon -- the two brothers, it seemed, had finally found a common ground; Lucien sulked red-faced at Leon, put-out and betrayed, and Jasper sulked red-faced at Leon because he could.

"We hate you," Jasper announced disparagingly, puckering his lips and squinting his eyes. "We hate you big."

Leon whipped around, eyes wide in horror and shock. He knelt down before he could brace himself, definitely bruising his knees in his haste. He looked Lucien up and down, touched the back of his head lightly and squeezed his arms and legs.

“Oh my god,” he said in horror. “Are you alright? Does anything hurt? Are you bleeding anywhere? I’m so sorry, Lu. I’m so sorry.”

The twins stared at the scene, slightly bemused. Zephyrus gaped in distress at the two brothers. It was Jasper’s fault to begin with. Tristan looked at his brother, their eyes meeting to express the same realization of the injustice. The golden blonde twin shrugged and continued rummaging through the drawers, despite Lucien’s comment. It was just Leon. He had been there tonnes of times, and Mara had told him to make himself at home.

“Hey look what I found!” Tristan said gleefully, pulling out an accordion of purple packaged condoms.

"Don't," Lucien yelled, scuttling backwards like a wounded crab. "Don't."

Jasper flung himself forward to grab his abandoned hair-tie and flicked it, not at Lucien, but at Leon -- the band landing somewhere near his feet. "Can't touch him. He hate you mega-big. We hate you super mega big."

This was slightly unfair considering Leon had done nothing to offend Jasper -- yet there he stood, one eyebrow raised, his arms crossed over his chest and his chin raised provocatively; this was Jasper, everything was a reclaim. Lucien pulled at the sleeve of his jacket; idly, contemplatively, looking away from Leon, fine spikes black hair falling into his face. However, despite himself, his gaze was slowly crawling back to him and he was obviously interested as to what the man would say to explain himself. Jasper's interest had already wandered, his eyes narrowed upon Tristan and the package of purple condoms.

"WHAT'S THAT?" he hollered unnecessarily, slack-jawed and curious.

Leon’s distress shone obviously through his horrified face.

“Lucien...” he said, distraught. “I’m sorry.”

Leon knew that this wouldn’t work; the boys teamed up against him gave the man no chance. He feared for his life, or at least his sanity. He dropped his head in defeat, displacing his priority which he knew should have been on Tristan’s new discovery. He got to his feet with a sigh and turned his attention to Mara’s cherubs.

Tristan looked from the accordion toy he had just found to Leon. “I’m not sure,” he said slowly. “What is it?”

Leon furrowed his eyebrows, then proceeded to bring his palm to his face and shook his head. How was this already going so poorly?

Lucien disregarded Leon and wiggled himself towards Zephyrus, pausing only to look over his shoulder and sigh exaggeratedly in the man's direction; he was more surprised than he was hurt, but more hurt than he was angry and he needed time to reassess his opinion of Leon. Two minutes at least. After he had returned his gaze to the slightly less obnoxious of twins, Lucien gestured towards his rucksack and gave a small sort of lopsided half-smile that may or may not have been meant to convince the boy that what he was about to propose was perhaps the most amazing thing in the world, ever. "U'corns? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah!"

Jasper stared open-mouthed at Tristan, contemplating the package; he then tackled the boy wholesale, aiming his flailing limbs at the boys hands to grasp at the accordion condoms. Once the tussling of limbs had worked in his favor and he felt his chubby fingers wrap around the packet, unconcerned that his hand was also wrapped around Tristan's, Jasper brought the condoms to his nose and grinned a roguish grin.

"Grace has this in cup-bored. COMBOMS!"

The lanky babysitter remained in his motionless position as the events unfolded before him. He would somehow need to win back Lucien’s trust, or by the end of the night Jasper would destroy something beyond repair. His eyes widened in shock and horror as Jasper brokenly displayed his knowledge of the contraceptive.

“Jasper,” he said as calmly as he could, taking a few slow steps towards them. “Do you know what that’s for?”

Tristan squawked in displeasure as he was thrown brutally to the ground.

"Get off of me!" he cried, trying to push Jasper off of him. He was a lot heavier than he looked. "Fatty!"

Zephyrus looked at Lucien quizzically. “Are you okay?” he asked calmly. “You fell hard.”

He cocked his head to the side and scanned his memory.

“What are Unicorns?”
