I know we've talked about natural sun burn relief/healing. What about prevention though. Is it just wear long sleeves and hats? With my job I can't do that, and I don't think anyone wants to live like that. I am a lil skeptical about what goes into suncreen/sunblock.

I can't seem to find the sunscreen. I see pictures on the website but can't find it on their product list. This is something I'm going to be using everyday as I'm going to be out in the sun everyday this summer so I wouldn't mind investing in a good one.

I can't believe how expensive sunscreen is. You'd think there's gold in it. rolleyes

I'm incredibly bad and don't wear sunscreen. It wouldn't get hot where I used to live, so it really wasn't an issue. I did pick up Aubrey's Saving Face at Whole Foods. I also bought Alba sunscreen at Whole Foods because it was a good price.

The best thing to use is a physical block, something with zinc oxide in it. Remember the white stuff for noses? Yeah, that. You don't have to have it on like that, though. Even a thin layer is pretty effective.

It's all expensive. There was a nationwide push for sunscreen and sunblock in Australia a few years ago, due to the high rate of skin cancer there. You can do a search for Australian sunscreen products. I found some a few years ago this way.

Now we just get the stuff for babies with the highest SPF we can find. Just remember that you don't want to spend every moment outside covered in sunscreen. You need sun every day to make Vitamin D.

That saving face one looks really good, I mean the other one has a huge ingredient list that I can't even understand. The saving face only seems to have SPF 25 but I think that will be okay, I mean as long as I'm not on the water the UV doesn't rise to high here in Canada I think. Just when I go out on a boat or to the beach, the reflection off the water is killer.

I have another question...Is there such a thing as a natural safe self tanner??? Like Alba seems to market some, but again, I can't even understand the ingredient list. And is it ever truly safe? the way my friend explained it to me, the UV rays are just part of your worry in skin cancer, the mutation of your cells when your skin changes color is the real issue.

I personally don't worry about skin cancer that much. When Africa is #1 for skin cancer rates then I'm going to start worrying about it. Vitamin D deficiencies are a good contributor to other cancers. Best source of vitamin D is from the sun.

You might want to check out African Fair Trade Society's Shea Butter. Google shows that shea butter is a natural protects from the sun at low levels. It's grown in Africa and the African people use it, and they're not on top places that have skin cancer, so it shouldn't be too bad, eh?

Oh, and about ingredient lists. I believe they have to legally list the scientific name for the ingredients used. For instance, the first ingredient in my shea butter is "butyrospermum parkii". If there were no brackets stating what butyrospermum parkii was, I probably wouldn't of bought it. (Though, I might of regardless, because the salesman was very cute. :3)

Well I think the skin pigmentation of African's might have a lot more to do with not getting skin cancer. But if I succumb to the desire of having a nice tan over being wise and having healthy looking skin later on in life, well at least I know there are natural alternatifs.

Most vegetable & seed oils have low naturally, occurring spf ratings. Ratings are also empirical evidence based, there's no conclusive laboratory studies on the subject.

The only source I could currently find googling online is here:

Quote:
Sesame Seed Oil: SPF 4

Shea Butter: SPF 4

Jojoba Oil: SPF 4

Zinc Oxide: SPF 2 ‑ 45

Titanium Dioxide: SPF 2 ‑ 45

Red Raspberry Seed Oil: 28‑50

A recipe in one of my books for sunscreen that rates spf 15 includes the following: shea butter, wheat germ oil, sesame oil, st johnswort infused olive oil, and coconut oil.

There's also smart prevention methods instead of relying on sunscreen/block.

- Drink plenty of water to keep your skin from dehydrating.
- avoid sun exposure during peak hours (10am -3pm) You can reduce exposure by spending short periods in the shade.

If i find anything more solid, i'll post more.

The sunscreen that I got, as much as I love the ingredients... well it's SUPER thick, and greasy and doesn't really rub in so it leaves me looking all white. Are all natural sun screens like this? It absolutely has to be a sports one, and it needs to be around SPF 30

It might have a high amount of zinc oxide, which would leave you looking white as zinc oxide doesn't exactly blend into the skin well.
