Distant flickering, greener scenery
This weather's bringing it all back again
Great adventures, faces and condensation
I'm going outside to take it all in

We're a different pair, do something out of step
Throw a stranger an unexpected smile

You say too late to start, got your heart in a headlock,
I don't believe any of it
You say too late to start, with your heart in a headlock,
You know you're better than this

Name: K'pak

Age: 19

Sex: Male

Sexual Orientation: homosexual (he was as surprised as anyone)

Craft: Healer

Rank: Junior Weyrling

Physical Description: K'pak is not an especially large young man – he's a few inches below average height, and while he has some muscle on him, he is not particularly broad of shoulder. However, he carries himself with good posture and self-assurance, rather than slouching or shrinking into a crowd; it is not uncommon for people not to notice his small build until he is placed near other boys his age for comparison. Neither is he stunningly handsome in the classical sense: features a bit too sharp, chin a bit too pointed, a rather stubborn set to the jaw, though this is offset by good cheek bones and well-proportioned limbs. Despite regular treks outdoors, K'pak's skin remains somewhat fair. He's one of those people who simply does not tan well. His hair is dark ash blond and cut in a short, low-maintenance style; its texture, straight with a hint of wave, gives it a constantly slightly tousled appearance. His eyes are grey tinged with blue, and have a kind expression more often these days, even if it's usually aimed at Amalenth.

Personality: K'pak is not at all ambitious. He doesn't lack self-esteem – he considers himself neither stupid nor weak, and he's not shy about it – he just doesn't care all that much about climbing the status quo. Even before coming to terms with his sexuality, and what it meant in terms of dragon choice, he never dreamed of becoming a bronze rider for glory as some boys might. In fact, when it comes to dragons he's practically colorblind – within reason, of course he'll offer proper deference to a queen. He simply loves all dragons with a quiet, subdued passion, and as an aspiring Dragonhealer considers it the highest honor that he might someday aid in easing their pain.

Some would say he should spare a little of that love towards his fellow humans.

This is, perhaps, uncharitable. It's not that K'pak is unsociable, or ill-tempered. He is simply an independent soul who does not suffer fools gladly. If he needs someone else's opinion, he will ask someone with the intelligence and knowledge to offer a good opinion, and would everyone else please stay out of his business. This means that, for instance, he will defer to a superior, but if someone who is obviously no more qualified than he is tries to interfere, he is much less charitable. When, in turn, someone asks his opinion, he will provide it honestly: his criticism may be scathing, but his praise is equally heartfelt, and more valuable because he gives no empty compliments.

K'pak is not one for long, flowery speeches. He is reasonably articulate, and he will use as many words as needed to convey his meaning, but no more. And true to the old adage, his reticence comes accompanied with attentive listening; K'pak rarely forgets a name or a lesson. On the flipside, though, if in the company of someone who will not stop talking when he wants to end the conversation and do something else, K'pak will resort to progressively less subtle hints to get them to shut up, from monosyllabic replies to tuning them out to outright requests to be quiet and let him work. If the offender truly does not get the hint, it is not unknown for K'pak to simply get up and leave.

K'pak believes strongly in the concept of duty. And not in the “oh, I'm a martyr, I'll do my duty even though I don't like it” way. (In fact, that sort of behavior is one of the fastest ways to make him very, very cross.) Duty is not a chore you do because someone tells you to; it is a moral obligation. A debt is owed to those who give you life, provide for you, and protect you. That debt must be respected and repaid however possible. As a result, he'll tolerate working even with those he loathes without complaint... if it's absolutely necessary, and only for as long as necessary. And, well, no one can fault him for his thoughts, in that scenario.

If K'pak has a biggest weakness, it is relationships. He recognizes that he is attracted to other men, but in a purely distant, aesthetic way. In that respect, thus far he's practically asexual, never acting on his thoughts. He's also torn when it comes to affection: he's the kind of person who could be very tactile if he would permit himself to show it, but he doesn't. Showing vulnerability to someone else is one of his greatest terrors, and if someone catches him in a moment of significant pain or fear he is likely to become irrationally hostile to them for quite some time afterward. Amalenth has helped mellow him out a little; though neither of them is what you'd call cuddly, each one balances the other in personality.

History: Kypak grew up in Ista Weyr, though no one in his lineage that he knows of has been a dragonrider. Despite this, his proximity to the Weyr meant that dragons were a fact of life growing up, and to this day he is quite comfortable around them... considering always, of course, that they are not to be trifled with.

Ky is the only child of two Weyr craftfolk. He would have had younger siblings, but... well, sometimes nature just says “no”. It never took. Eventually, Ky's parents simply focused their attention on their one son. They don't talk about it at all any more, really – it's in the past, and Ky sees no reason to bring up a painful subject again. Given the situation, one might expect Ky to be a spoiled brat, but quite the opposite happened, really. He was guided with a firm hand away from indolence. It was in his early years that he was instilled with his strong moral compass, which persists to this day. When he showed an aptitude for learning, his parents arranged an apprenticeship to one of the Weyr healers, something he took to well. Imagine his surprise, however, when one of the Riders told him he was a potential candidate!

Kypak listened patiently to the man's explanation. He knew a little about hatching, and the man filled out his limited knowledge: what struck him most was the alarming fact that a hatchling that did not find Theirs would go between and be lost. Ky agreed readily to go and stand if needed, to prevent that slim, awful chance that a hatchling might be lost that he could have saved.

He was fourteen turns old when he made that agreement. Ky has stood for several hatchings since then, without any dragon hatchling giving him so much as a second glance. He continues when he can with his healer training, expecting that when he becomes too old to Impress he can simply resume what he began before and become a proper dragonhealer for the Weyr.

For most of his Weyrlife, he honestly did not believe that a dragon would Impress to him. He dreamt of it, fantasized about what it would be like, climbed to the high places of the Weyr to feel the wind in his face and close his eyes and wonder... But dragons go to weyrbrats. That's what his parents always told him. It's in the blood. Sure, he'd seen plenty of exceptions in his time at the Weyr, but that's no reason to act a fool. He'd watched too many kids with swelled heads saunter in, certain that they'll Impress a bronze or a gold, only to be crushed when they fail to secure anything at all... Which made it all the more of a shock when he Impressed his Amalenth.

There's no such thing, after all, as just a green.

Pets: none.

Other/Talents: literate, though his handwriting is awful. Not COMPLETELY tone deaf.

Picture: none yet

The Picasso Triggerfish
The Picasso Trigger is a magnificent and very popular aquarium species that is easily recognized by its creamy grayish-tan and white colored body splashed with many distinctive bright blue and yellow fine-line, and golden, black and white wide-band type markings.

The Picasso species behaves in the typical aggressive Triggerfish manor. However, it may be housed with members of the same genus, if they are all added at the same time and ample space and housing is provided. Same species juveniles can be kept together, but as they mature fights are likely to occur between them. The Picasso Trigger is best kept in an aquarium with other similarly aggressive species of the same size or larger, as it may opportunistically eat smaller fish.

This fish enjoys the shallower waters inside and outside the reef where lots of rocks and creviced structures are present to hide in and search for food from. To help to reduce aggression towards other tankmates, provide ample room and shelter to allow this fish to establish an adequate sized territory of its own.

Green Amalenth

Amaleth is extremely average sized for a green, maybe a foot or two longer than normal, but lean and fast. She's skilled, has decent stamina for her size and color, and she knows it. She's defensive of her rider, not to the point of being actively aggressive to others, necessarily, though while she's unlikely to bloody someone, people might get knocked down if they're between her and her Rider, when she wants to be beside them, without much more than an stuck out tongue to even pass for an apology.

Personality wise, she's restless and sharp, and keenly observant, especially when it comes to things that she considers 'hers'. While she'll never fit among the ranks of dragons legendary for the amount of damage done in the careless moments of hatching, neither is she going to become memorable for being babyish and cute, and considers the term 'mine' to be babyish and immature, unless it's referring to food.
Her memory is fairly average, unless it comes to the short list of things that belong to 'her'. These being her rider and possibly one or two people close to them, particularly if said individuals have no dragons of their own. These are clearly unfortunate, incomplete souls who need a little extra attention. Poor things.
Posessiveness and protectiveness aside, she's a fairly practical dragon, and if there's anything she can't stand, it's blatant egotist. A particularly large egoed dragon -or- rider is, in her book, deserving of being taken down a peg, and she'll attempt to coax her rider into finding a way to do so. Preferably in the most humiliating fashion possible.

Because she cannot clutch on her own, she's defensive of other clutches and children, but flitt eggs are just too small for her to notice, and baby animals... they're just too TASTY.
Her love of children however does make her an excellent dragon with which to introduce young candidates to dragons, because for them, she'd be willing to pretend butter wouldn't melt in her mouth, and with them, her playful side does actually come out.

In flight: Whoever chases her -will- have to work at it. She's no gold, but she believes in a 'business before pleasure' idea about mating flights, possibly believing she benefits defensive flights by doing so, although some of the wheels and turns she preforms, and likely forces others into trying to mimic, would be ridiculously dangerous to a rider. Fortunately she's also smart enough not to try this while actually being ridden.

Oh God, Why Me?
Kypak is an pleasant but no nonsense sort of guy, who's drives have brought him into training as a healer. His passion for dragons may be in part what attracted him to be partnered with Amalenth, since she in turn cares for humans more, and both may see their vision of the world expand over time. Also, neither of them has much patience for someone with a swelled head or bad attitude, and are an excellent pair to remind the world at large that there is no such thing as 'Just' a green dragon.
