Risa was sitting on the bench closest to the slide. Miles had insisted on her not playing with him, that he could do it by himself. "Imma play by mysewf!" Still, she couldn't help but watch. She tried to let Miles be independent.. It wasn't working out so well. By nature, she really was a fuss-over-cute-children kind of person. And Miles.. Well, she was biased.
Miles was attempting to go down the slide face first. Attempting, because everytime he tried, his mother would say something like; "No Miles, not that way!" Or "Miles, feet first!". How could he let her know that he could take care of himself?

Prosper went to the park for inspiration, and he took his younger child with him. The Spring time was always a good time to practice sketching because the new leaves created some of the most interesting patterns with the light. Summer was good, too, but it could get prohibitively hot, so Spring was best. Fish was happy to accompany him on the outing, but once they arrived at the park and the boy realized they were not there to explore, they were there so Dad could sketch, he turned into a bundle of nerves.
"Daaaaaaaaaaaad," the little boy whined, "'M bored."
Feely taught him that word. Actually, Fish knowing 'Bored' as a concrete concept was all Feely's fault, and Prosper did not thank her for it.
"I'm sorry, Fish," he replied, "I'm working."
"Wanna play," groaned Fish.
"Can't you quietly amuse yourself somehow?" asked Prosper.
Fish was not entirely sure he knew what this sentence meant as an overall whole. He looked around glumly, and finally his eyes alighted on a playground where a few other children his age moved about like an infestation of ants.
"M gonna go play on th' jungle gym," he proclaimed, hopping off the bench. Prosper glanced up. It wasn't too far away, he supposed. "Can I?" asked Fish.
"Alright," said Prosper. Fish took off for the playground and was scurrying up the ladder to the slide within a minute. He got to the top and realized someone else was already there and seeming a bit hesitant.
"Don't you know how to slide?" Fish asked, a bit critical.

Miles looked up to see another boy. He frowned slightly. "Courthe I do!" He said, lisping ever so slightly. He still couldn't get a handle on his 's' sounds. How troublesome. "I juth want to try another way." He explained, with a little nod of the head. "But Mom thay I can't." He paused, and tilted his head at the boy. "What your name?" He asked. "I Miles."
Risa looked at her son, and then the new comer. "Well, Miles. Are you going to slide down, or not?" She asked. "It's rude to keep someone else waiting."
Miles nodded at his mother, though the thought of keeping someone waiting hadn't occurred to him. "I sorry." He said, looking at Fish. He put his feet out in front of him, and slid down. "Your turn!"

Fish grabbed hold of the bar over the mouth of the slide like he'd seen bigger kids do at school and got a swinging start. He zoomed down the slide and thudded onto the rubber playground surface next to Miles.
"'M Fish," he proclaimed, pointing to himself. He then jabbed a thumb over his shoulder, indicating the ladder. "You wanna go again? You go first? 'Cause we have a line?"
His pre-school teacher would be proud - if nothing else, lessons about taking turns seemed to have sunk in.
He glanced over at the woman on the bench. "Issat your mom?" he asked.

"Hi Fissh." Miles said, with a smile before nodding. "Kay, but next time--you go firs so it fair." He told the other boy as he went up the ladder. That was how his cousins did it, one would go first, and then they would switch. This was one of the few good habits he'd learned from them. He reached the slide and down he went.
"Your turn!" He said, turning to smile at his new friend. He paused and nodded. "Yeah, that's Mom." He said, with a gesture. "She'th bossy. Maketh me take bath and thuff." He made a face. Bath time was obviously not his favorite time of the day--he tried avoiding it if he could.

"I like baths!" said Fish, with a bit more enthusiasm than he ought to have had. "Like to splash n' stuff."
He took off and scurried up the ladder. Once at the top, he let out some sort of warrior whoop and slid back down with a crackle of static electricity. Mischievously, he reached forward and gave Miles a light shock.
"Cool, huh?" he asked. "The slide gives you magic powers!"

Miles couldn't believe it, how could anyone like baths? They made you all clean, and stuff. He would much rather stay dirty. The toddler watched as the other boy slid down, and smiled.
He blinked as he was shocked. "How you do that?" He asked in amazement. Did the slide really give people magic powers? "I wanna try!" He decided, racing up the ladder, and reaching the slide. The moment he touched the slide, it shocked him.

Fish laughed, seeing the boy's surprise at being shocked. "Guess it doesn't like you," he called, and followed Miles up the ladder.
"Your hair's stickin' up funny," he added, clinging to the side of the ladder. He didn't understand it but sometimes sliding made your hair stick up, even if you didn't even touch the slide with your head.
"Go again!" he cheered, giving Miles a light nudge towards the chute.

Miles tried to feel his hair with his hand, and couldn't. There were strands sticking up like he had rubbed a balloon on his head. "Weird." Was his only comment, before going down the slide. He could feel the surge of static electricity running through him as he zoomed down the slide.
"Your turn!" He told his new friend happily. "See if you get magic powers!" He couldn't tell if he'd gotten them yet--he hoped so. He silently wondered what else they could do, besides shock people.

Fish hopped onto the slide behind Miles and whizzed quickly down it towards him. He overshot the end a bit and went tumbling into the other boy. He received a spine-tingling shock as they hit the ground.
"Sorry," he murmured, hastily getting up and brushing himself off. "You 'kay?" he asked, and then broke into a grin. "You shocked me!" he exclaimed. "You got powers, too!"

Miles jumped, forgetting that Fish had been behind him. He tumbled over, making Risa's pointed ears twitch in alert, as she looked over to her son. There didn't seem to be any damage. She inwardly gave a sigh of relief.
"I'm 'kay." Miles said, smiling up at the other boy before standing up himself. "Are you?" He asked. "My magic didn't hurt you, did it?"

Fish grinned more widely and shook his head. "'M good!" he chimed. He was already looking around the playground for other things to do, and his eyes alighted on a dome-shaped climbing gym constructed out of metal bars.
"Wanna go climb?" he asked, though it was hardly a question since he was already starting to head in that direction regardless of the other boy's answer.

Miles grinned, and ran after his new friend. "I climb good!" He declared, though in reality he'd never been on a jungle gym such as this one. "Race you!" He used the phrase he'd heard his older cousins use. He ran ahead, or tried to. Being a toddler, he couldn't move very fast.
All the while, Risa was keeping a careful eye on her son.

"Kay!" shouted Fish, running after the other boy. He was more graceful in water than on land, admittedly, but was still a bit older than the other boy and thus better coordinated.
"Last one there's a rotten egg!" he yelled happily, pulling ahead of Miles. Laughing, he reached out an arm and triumphantly touched the cool metal bars of the jungle gym.
He waited for Miles to catch up and then asked, "Race to the top?"

Miles frowned as he reached the jungle gym. Did this make him a rotten egg? Oh well. Another race was about to begin. "We race." He agreed. He took hold of the next bar, and started to climb. "We be 'plorers. On mountain."
Admittedly, there were points where he struggled to reach the next grip--the dome was clearly build for older children, and Miles was awfully small.
