i know i ask too many questions here but im learning so much and now i feel addicted to fishkeeping now that i know how much fun proper tank care is

i may be getitng another bit of space in my room cleaned off for a fish tank. im debating on either a 10 or 5gal. im thinking of doing all female bettas and i was wondering how many would fit in a 5gal?

if i pick the 5gal tank there is one i like that comes with a filter very very similar to this
http://www.petco.com/product/14930/Tetra-ReptoFilter-For-Frogs-Newts-and-Turtles.aspx?CoreCat=LN_Shopping_ReptileSupplies_AllSaleItems

is it a decent filter? if i have to i will save up for another sponge filter but if i can cycle the tank with the one it comes with i would prefer to save the money needless to say

i recommend nothing smaller than a 10 gallon tank for multiple female betta and in my tank i had maybe 7? i have like 12 now XD but its a 55 gallon

and hang in the tank filters are poopy : O a hang off the back power filter filters better and just about any one rated for a 10 gallon tank will do (if you get a 10 gallon)

Fish like gouramis that have flashy colours and wide tails will cause male bettas to attack them (They think it's another betta) Fish with wide tails and bright colours like angelfish, gouramis, etc aren't a good idea.

With a female, they might get a little finicky, but I'm not really sure about that one. I know you can have more females together. It might be okay? I would look that up or ask around.

not to house with a betta, just one or 2 by themselves

For bettas, I'd say you could do 4 in a 10g. Make sure you plant it moderately to heavily. Fake plants or real, whichever is easier. Also put more hiding spots than Bettas. As long as they have places to escape each other and the sight line is nicely broken up everything should be fine.

I don't know about the gouramis. Never had them and haven't read too much about them.

For both female bettas and gouramis in a 5 gallon I would suggest a maximum of 2.
I am currently keeping two honey gouramis, a male and a female, in a 5 gallon and they are doing great. If you want to keep gouramies you can take any kind of dwarf, since it's best if their size is under 5 cm.

About the filter, I think I have the same type of filter, but I'm actually concidering to take it out. The fish don't care much for the current, they don't like it at all since I can adjust the setting to flow softer. It also doesn't help much with filtering out the poo since I have so much decoration in there.
I invested in a gravel vacume and I give my tank a big cleaning every week.
If your version does have a speed setting it you may be able to incorperate it as a part of the divider. I think it's important that you devide the tank in two with the decorations. It will give the fish some provacy and 'space'.

I ne had the same problem I had a male betta, a powder blue gourami and a honey one, the honey killed the powder and attacked the betta, it was horrible, I never knew they would fight until it was too late, but the betta and honey gourami have established domianance, thats why the fighting starts, they want the territory I beleive.

that doesnt make sense considering a honey gourmi is probably THE MOST peaceful gourami

you sure you didnt have a small golden gourami? and how small was the tank?

a powder is a dwarf gourami and in that big a tank i'm surprised there was that kind of aggression. either had you some seriously angry gourami or you misidentified them. if anything the betta should have attacked the dwarfs. dwarf gourami are some of the MOST peaceful gourami you could buy.

nope nope i am positive they are dwarf, one was blue(who died) and the living is redish orange. The powder and betta got along great until I bought the red guy a few weeks later things went bad....... I thought gourami liked each other but I guess they had bad attitudes or something cuz i have never had this before, but now the betta and gourami are good i think its been a couple months and nothign has died.........
