For real life plants, I know you have to get UV lights. I don't want to get a new light hutch (god no!) what are some good brands of bulbs I can get? I usually shop on Doctors Foster & Smith. I'll get the length and everything of my light.

ok

you NEVER want uv lights in your hood

a uv sterilizer is a uv light bulb in a black case
why? because uv light kills things
i own one and i dont see algae or sick fish

you want to look at the kelvin rating

the more blue the light the better for coral
the more yellow the light the better for plants
so you would want a 65k bulb

here you can see chlorophyll is absorbed more in the 65k range

So would this be a good light for a planted aquarium? light
The bulb in my aquarium right now is currently a 32w and I was told I need more for medium light plants. But I was also told that I would need this special lamp and would have to get the whole light hutch and the one I was told I would need is like 800$ x_x

My light fixture is only 1 bulb, would getting that Coralife bulb be enough for plants? Or would I have to buy a whole new light hutch?

1. Fluorescent lights are best (you can use the tube or CFL)
2. You want a 'temperature' or spectrum that is around 5000k (you can get away with 4500-6000k usually).
3. You want to take the ACTUAL wattage of the fluorescent light (if it is a CFL, it will probably have two values, you want the lower, the other is the 'equivalent iridescent bulb' wattage) to determine your watts per gallon:

With NO CO2 injection:
-Small amount of plants: [<1 w/g] only get plants with low light requirements
-Medium amount of plants [1-1.5 w/g] Don't get plants with high light requriements

With C02 injection:
-Minimum of [2 w/g] and you should have a medium amount of plants to a lot of plants.

What about plants for a 55 gallon? I was looking at a light fixture that had 143 watts. Fluorescent bulbs. I know about CO2 injection and fertilization and all that.

Depending on your plants, I would suggest a hood and using 100-150w worth of light... more light if you use CO2 and high demand plants. The important part is to ge the right 'spectrum' (kelvin rating) and you can acutally save A LOT of money by picking up the lights at a local harware store, etc, just be careful to get the 5000-6500 kelvin range (I cant' remember the numbers exactly)
