~Banning seeks out Fao and his Essentic to fix his incompetent duo's mistake. The man sure likes to have a clean record OwO
PostPosted: Mon Apr 27, 2009 12:40 am

Troublesome.

Sigh-inducing, that's what this was.

Longway and her Essentic Alter had both almost begged him to let them fix their error, but Bane had rather crudely put them back in line. Yes, he'd let them squirm a bit, and the irritation he felt now was almost pleasant to experience, knowing back at the Office, there were now two incredibly nervous people biting their nails. Oh yes, this would be a huge pain in the bum, and he'd have every right to let them know it was. At the very least it would teach them their lesson.
No.
Sparks.
In the shop.
Until the Contract was signed.

Come on, that wasn't so hard now, right? Apparently it still had been a very complicated concept to them, as they'd still managed to 'lose' the Spark. They had been incredibly lucky that they'd at least caught the man's name, and that that name had been safely transcribed into their database. Oh yes, that one... Maybe this wouldn't be as disastrous as the thought it was.

So here he was, a lone, lost-looking noble amidst the hustle and bustle of the carnival people. Not that it showed, Banning may as well have been standing on a deserted town square the way he looked unaffected and almost bored, but it was pretty embarrassing to admit he had no idea where to find this Grady-person. Horns they'd said hmm...

Glancing around, casually striding around with such natural confidence not many would dare to suggest he was probably in the wrong place, he scanned the area, checked the people he saw.
Until something caught his eye.

Yes, the description matched... something subtle about the way he moved, too. Had something happened? People who bear a secret tended to emit that sort of little behavioural signals unconsciously...

Like a panther stalking its prey, Banning changed his direction mid-step, swerved around fluidly and approached the young man.

"Faolan Grady?"

Hard to ignore such a carefully controlled tone. Somehow you just knew you were in trouble when being addressed in such a manner.

Faolan looked up at his name being called, golden eyes a bit wide since that voice had an authoritative ring to it. "Did the barker send you? I swear I've been nowhere near the Siamese Twins' tent today." Because surely this all had to do with that misunderstanding about him being outside when the twins were changing that time, right? Not that he was interested in naked conjoined flesh, he'd just been strolling by . . . in the middle of the night.

Although, as soon as the words were out, Fao somehow doubted that this man belonged to the carnival. He knew just about everyone employed by his adopted father and he'd never seen this man. Hey, maybe that had a new magician--judging by the man's fancy clothes--and he was just stopping by to find out about the lay of the land . . . and Fao would probably tell him to--she was about three tents over and part of the burlesque act.

... what?

"What?"

Aw phooey. Not many ever managed to get the Duke to blurt something out in return, usually he thought twice before responding. After the first moment of bemusement faded, Banning just looked miffed. Silly boy, that was a simple greeting to be answered with either 'Yes, that's me' or 'No sorry, let me take you to the guy'. Not hard or is it? He aggravetedly pinched the bridge of his nose and sighed.

"I was not sent by the barker and I have not come to pester you about any Siamese twins. I'm the owner of Life Essentials... and I believe you have been entrusted with something by my two employees a while ago?" Just cut right to the business then, sheesh.

"I haven't come to reclaim that object, I am here to make you finish our protocol. We prefer keeping a clean record of our customers, you see..." and whether you like it or not, buddy, you just became one.

Fao's smile faded into a look of suspicion, his posture changing from open to defensive. "I remember your shop and the item. Even if you did want it back, I don't really have it anymore. He wasn't sure what the man meant by protocol, but he certainly wasn't handing Zia over to anyone. The guy could just go find another gypsy parrot to hatch from a weird grape jelly filled rock. So there.
PostPosted: Mon Apr 27, 2009 12:45 pm

That one earned him a stare. An empty, dark stare.

Don't.
Mess with me buddy.

"You don't have it anymore, now what oh what could have become of it?"
Ooh, he could guess. Even if he'd 'lost' it somewhere, Faolan would still know where to find it. The Spark would search its master. His tone was filled with scathing mockery and silent fury.

"... it emerged, didn't it." he hissed, dangerously, conspirationally low, eyes slitted as a warning. He'd taken a step closer, towering above him a little and maintaining a drilling eye contact. This both served as intimidation as venting his anger, as well as to not be overheard.

Not sure how much to trust the man, Fao stayed silent, staring back. He probably would've stayed as such, but the man did know something about it and he was from that shop, so . . . "It changed into a strange parrot that never shuts up and likes to touch everything. Handy with the dishes, though."

He gestured back to the tent behind him. "We should maybe go inside away from the eyes and ears of the carnival."
PostPosted: Mon Apr 27, 2009 12:58 pm

Strange parrot? Oh heck, why not. There really was no limit to the Proto diversity, it seemed. At least the youth's suggestion made sense.

Banning nodded curtly, the flare in his eyes losing some intensity. Yes, that's a very, very good idea.

"I haven't come to take it away from you... It's no use to do that now, the creature belongs to you. Attuning is a nigh irreversible process, that often tears the Essence apart." he spoke up calmly once they were out of the general bustle.

"I am only here to complete the 'deal' you never made, mister Grady. What we do is grant our customers one of those things, and in return they sign a contract with me in which they vow discretion. This isn't of any legal worth, but I value the protocol, and the general idea is to keep both parties out of the line of fire."

After that, he left a moment of silence to let that sink in.

"You may or may not know that Essentics aren't something to flaunt in public. Luckily, not many will recognise one nowadays."

"Those that have seen it so far believe me when I tell them it's a parrot," Faolan said, moving to the bed to pat a small lump under the covers. He knew the little creature wasn't asleep under there. Pulling the blanket up, he peeked under, smiling at Ziazan laying out the tarot like he'd showed it. "Someone's here to see you, little one.

Moving back to face Banning, the young man held the proto in his hands. "I know all about discretion and I wouldn't do anything to harm Zia. Rather found of it by now."

Despite knowing it wasn't a display of grand mannrs, Banning couldn't help interlocking his hands behind his back and leaning forward a little to see better.

"Zia? ... my, my. Quite a small specimen. Yes, it could pass for a... mutated parrot to uneducated folks." Parrots don't have gems on their head for starters, and they had claws, and beaks, and very piercing eyes. Not at all like this softly rounded squinter here.

Tearing his gaze away from the Proto, he glanced at Faolan. "... what are you teaching it? For as far as I'm aware not even Essentics can see the future, and I doubt its Purpose is to.. play games with you?" he raised an eyebrow.

"What can it do naturally?" .. why yes, the man's just curious now. He knew what tarot was, but why would an Essentic be messing with those cards?

Faolan shrugged a bit. "I've been teaching it my trade of fortune telling, which doesn't really have as much to do with seeing the future as it does just telling people what they want to hear. I thought it'd be fun to show it all the different methods, but mostly Ziazan likes to poke on things and tell me stuff about them . . . even if I don't want to hear it."

Zia flew up from Faolan's hands to rest on the bed again, poking at the cards. "The Fool. Upright: new beginnings, new adventures, new opportunities, unlimited possibilities, pleasure, passion, thoughtlessness, rashness. Reversed: a bad decision, indecision, apathy, hesitation, a faulty choice." The proto looked at Faolan and smiled. The boy patted the little creature on the head proudly and looked at the older man as if to say the little proto was doing well in his care.

Blink.

Glancing from the small Essentic to young mister Grady and back, and back again, Banning had to suppress the urge to grin. Oh yes, very appropriate.

"It learns quickly... I don't doubt this lies within its range of talents. Now... it 'tells you stuff about things'?" Way to be vague, young man.

"... no matter now. Talking about opportunities and choices both right and wrong, the only wrong choice you can make at this very moment is to decline my Contract." That would make me very displeased indeed, so let's please get this over with, maybe then we can chit-chat.

"Like I already told you, it is of no legal value, but Life Essentials likes to stick to our protocol. All I will need from you is your signature, and the deal is done. It will be a symbolic token of your promise to be discreet, for the sake of everyone involved."

Faolan looked at the contract, then up at the man again. "If I didn't know better, I'd say you were a demon with pushing the contract so much." Not that it bothered him. If it was part of the deal to keep the little creature, then okay. He wasn't too sure it would be as happy with the other man anyway.

Picking up a pen he leaned over to sign, then stopped. True this wasn't legally binding, but it was binding nonetheless and Fao had to make sure it was on the up and up. Besides, why not let the old guy get a better idea of what Zia did? He reached over and picked the proto up, ignoring its fussing at being taken away from the tarot cards, and set it on the contract.

Ziazan looked down at the document its bottom was resting on and closed its eyes, then rattle off, "Natural fiber. Parchment. Made over three hundred years ago, but the ink is newer. Perhaps a laser printer?" It looked down at the contract, tilting its bejeweled head. "It is from an old vault of an ancestor. Kept in a vault before being moved to treasury by . . ." It furrowed its little brow. "Amalia. There is magic in the document, but only to keep it fresh." Zia looked up at Faolan. "There is no danger in signing."

A demon hmm.. He might as well have been one.

But even more fascinating than being called a demon was this little thing's skills. Yes, yes and yes, all truths. Yup, printed, the handwriting was done manually though.

"Amalia... my grandmother four generations down the line, indeed. A gifted young truthsayer... " he murmured thoughtfully, observing the little thing. "Truly remarkable. You wished it to be able to do this? Essentics can't tell the future for as far as I'm aware. Psychometry is a very useful talent if used well."

Maybe the magnitude of its gift, so specific and undoubtedly not an easy feat for any other Magicker, was the cause for it being so absurdly small? Who knows, it had no need to be bigger either. A little gem all on its own.

"Now if you please..." for all Banning cared Faolan smudged on his name with cranberry juice, just get this over with so I can relax.

Scooting Ziazan out of the way, Faolan shrugged. "When it asked for a purpose, I told it to help me in fortune telling. I guess it decided on its own what that entailed." He signed the contract with adequate enough flourish and sat back in the chair, looking at the man. "You seem sort of surprised at what Zia does. I thought you and your staff were supposed to be knowledgeable on these matters, and yet, none of you seem at all prepared for what its done so far. I take that to mean you are not the Essentic's creator?"
