http://lastyearsmodel.org/ is an interesting site I stumbled upon.
I find their slogan amusing"Saving the planet through sheer laziness."

But of course, in this economic pinch we're all feeling, arent we all sticking with last year's model?

Great website. I really like the look and feel of it. I usually keep things until they fall apart because I grow emotionally attached to it. Once that happens, it's very difficult to get rid of it.

That's such an interesting site!

The best I've got is a MacBook from last Novemberish, an iPod (3rd gen, I think) from 2005, a digital camera from I don't remember what year that currently has tape holding the battery in place, with a lost cord (I may end up replacing that), and I drive a 1999 Malibu. That's as old as I've got.

I got my laptop recently but it's used. Reason being, all the new ones they had were Vista. I hate it but I gave it a try anyway. I went through 3 different laptops before I too the last one back and said I wanted XP and I didn't care how old ugly and beat up it was. Lo and behold, I have a 3 year old laptop that works better and faster than the new models I had previously.

My TV is an old one that I saved from getting trashed. Black and white with antenna on top and all the dials on the set. Sure it's old, but I got it for free and it works really well, especially since I don't often watch television. Too bad it's going to become unusable when all the stations switch over to digital, though I think there's a smaller station or two around that I'll still be able to get.

I just don't understand people who feel like they have to have the newest model of everything.

Cant you just get a digital converter box with that discopunt thing the government sent out to everyone?

May the fierce be with you.

. The newest things I have are an ecoFriendly laptop (Mac), a mini Mac, and an iPhone. My LED television is new, but my parents bought it for me. I still have my same old hybrid car; I've had to replace the cell on it twice. XD I don't mind, I love it. Toyota said they will exchange my car for a newer model if I have to replace the cell again before my [twice renewed] extended warranty expires. I got it in 1998 at a car show shortly after they first came out.

. Things that are not gadgets, however, I've had forever. I have shoes from when I was sixteen, clothes from about the same time, and furniture that I've repaired for a decade or so. I don't really throw things away unless I absolutely have to, and even then I try to find a way to reuse the material. If I can't, I tear it all apart, then distribute it to the correct recycling program (cloth, organic goods like leather from furniture, wood, metal, electronics, etc.). I love this site, and think it'll be a great resource for a lot of us.

The problem is that my TV is old enough that I'm not sure that there's any way to connect the box into it. I asked my dad about it since I'm not much good with setting stuff like that up, and he said that it probably wouldn't work since the antenna is directly attached into my TV and doesn't go through an input on the back that the box could be hooked up to.

I understand it for many electronics. Not all, but many.

Personally, I like to have the newest(or at least newer) computers, cell phones, gaming systems, and MP3 players. Don't worry, I don't just toss 'em; it all gets donated to the local Rape & Abuse Crisis Center and/or YWCA.

However, I don't think it's necessary to have the latest TV sets or stereos. Those things tend to last quite a while, and, for the most part, newer models have little more than aesthetic differences.

I should probable clarify my statement a little bit. I can understand it up to a point with electronics, because there starts to be compatibility issues on older models or there are significant improvements in the new one that are useful to some people. It's when a person gets, say, a new phone, every year just because they have to have the new trendy model that's being advertised when all they're doing is using the same features that their old phone was perfectly capable of, that's what I don't really get.

I agree with that completely.

A friend of mine had a five year old phone that survived a 30-40ft drop; the battery didn't even pop out.

No reason to replace something like that.

I agree... Now, like my phone, it messes up every now and then, randomly turns off and such. It's annoying. I'll buy a used phone off ebay to replace it whenever i get the money, but i'll be sure to donate my current phone. (or recycle it)
