The match between Hitsuga's parents was a somewhat unusual one; the Lucid scholarly painter Keiga married Eiyou, Dreaming daughter of Eitatsu, Postmaster of Gray Shells, the largest city on the northern coast of Rinkoku. Though both spouses were intelligent and capable, Keiga was definitely dominant in the relationship, which made Eitatsu uneasy. When Keiga began using his artwork to promote rather politically unpalatable separatist ideas, Eitatsu became even more alarmed, and ultimately pulled strings that resulted in Keiga being shipped off to the far coast of Kokoku, hoping the informal exile would soften his attitude; her scheme did not work, however, and Keiga ended up resentful and emotionally alienated from his wife's family. Thus, while Keiga returned occasionally to spend intimate time with his wife, he was not involved in the upbringing of Hitsuga at all.

Hitsuga, a delicate, somewhat shy boy who suffered childhood fits, clung to his mother's skirts and was exposed to the many rare and wonderful Bukoku imports her workplace transformed into pharmaceuticals; when he was not observing her, he played with the children of the other scholars, in particular a girl named Baikou who, despite being only two days older than him, declared herself his big sister and made it her duty to protect him from bullies. These two grew up together, enduring teasing, illness, childhood feuds and fears in parallel, not as closely as twins but certainly with the intimacy of siblings; their relationship was much closer than that of Hitsuga and his true sister, Eikou, whom he slightly resented for "stealing" their mother's attention.

... Making Baikou's declaration on her sixteenth birthday that she would marry Hitsuga an extremely worrying moment to him. She confessed that when they had gone hunting through the shallows looking for shark eggs with scandalously bare feet, when they had lain on the hill together and complained about their respective red and white flowers, she found herself feeling the stirrings of adult love; Hitsuga could not say the same. However, their mothers, both influential Lucid ladies, thought the match was especially good and urged the youths into it; Hitsuga, a good son, acquiesced to their wishes.

Yet as he thought of his grandmother's cruel treatment of his father and the tales of men dropping dead from being spurned by their keenly Lucid wives -- keenly Lucid like the budding scholar Baikou -- he began to feel rising doubts and anxieties. When the death of his neighbor resulted in her husband's protracted, agonizing death, his pangs of sadness tangible through the walls of Eiyou's house, Hitsuga fell into an outright panic. He believed he knew, intuitively, that Baikou was not the one he was destined to love in that way and became preoccupied of thoughts of perversion and doom. The chemist to which he was apprenticed at the time, a man named Kitsuo, noticed Hitsuga's plight and offered him salvation; he revealed to the boy a spell that would, if activated as the mate-bond began to form, would shield Hitsuga from being bound like a slave but not prevent him from feeling love and pleasure.

Hitsuga, however, wavered; under the influence of his mother and mother-in-law, as well as the sweetness of Baikou, he began to believe that the spell was not needed, and passed through the wedding a lovely blushing groom. That evening, though, as he felt his selfhood melt away, his understanding of himself become confused, his very mind flooding out of its borders and mingling with something alien, he was quite suddenly struck with panic. His mind racing uncontrollably with terror, he attempted to employ the spell -- a terrible mistake, as while it did partially shield him from his end of the bond, the sudden shock of the barrier traumatized Baikou as much as her mate's sudden death might have. Falling into the first fit he had suffered in eight years, Hitsuga entered a long, feverish depression in which he was unaware of anything but feeling wrong, wrong, oppressed, and gutted.

About six months later, Hitsuga had largely recovered, but the relationship between him and Baikou and between their mothers was permanently damaged. Though Baikou did not feel the effects of a broken bond permanently, her heart was still addled and heavy with anguish, and her mother spirited her away to Toukoku to be treated by the doctors of the Capital. Ultimately it was decided that the children had not successfully married, and Baikou's family cut off Hitsuga's in order to assure their child's recovery. Eitatsu blamed Hitsuga and may have punished him or at least cut him off if not for the intervention of Eikou, who nursed Hitsuga through his illness and became from this point forward his strongest advocate.

Six years passed. Now sickened by the ocean smells that he loved in his childhood, Hitsuga moved to the mountain city, the Crest of Rinkoku, with Kitsuo -- thanks partially to the support of Eikou who worked hard to rebuild his reputation -- and shifted from studying scholarly chemistry to the sublime art of perfumery. Though a designer more than a merchant and therefore not fabulously rich, Hitsuga established a reputation as a keen artist and as well a generally upstanding citizen, kind-hearted and generous, lending aid whenever he was able.

... But, some nights, he would feel that sensation of being crushed, of leaking out his soul, and would shut up his perfumery shop, enveloping himself in blinds and screens and lighting a lantern and reading, in the innermost chamber, the journals of magical philosophers, in which a upcoming scholar named Baikou sometimes published her research on the spirits of the Silver World.

And writing in the margins, over and over, 培荒, 培荒, in dark red ink.

-Arrival In Gaia-

One misty day as Hitsuga was closing up shop in the Chemists' Tower, a strange visitor arrived -- wrapped in a dark gray cloak quite unlike the native style of Rinkoku, this person was not interested in his perfumes, no thank you -- but rather, in trading Hitsuga something very special.

Placing a vial on a table -- its glass dark, almost black, Hitsuga could not see inside -- the visitor proposed a trade. He had heard of Hitsuga's past transgressions, but he was not there to scorn or avenge; rather, he hoped to help. This was a gift from the Sorcerers of Kokoku, who had an obligation to the offspring of Keiga... It was the medicine that would heal his sickness. This could stop up the hole in his heart.

Hitsuga could laugh at him if he liked, even throw out the vial, but if he decided to take the potion, if he decided to step up and end the pointless suffering that he had basked in for so many self-indulgent years, the man promised that Hitsuga would be healed. However, if Hitsuga did take the medicine, he would be obliged to answer the call of his people some distant day in the future. They were no soul-stealers, he promised; rather, as they would cure him, he would cure them.

... With only those cryptic words, the stranger left.

Now, Hitsuga, having a sensible chemical training, knew better than to quoff some strange liquid without analyzing its contents first. It seemed too easy for some resentful enemy of Eitatsu to poison him this way, manipulating him by stirring up the guilt and panic from so many years ago.

... Guilt and panic. Guilt and panic.

... Well, Hitsuga had just closed the shop anyway; he could begin that analysis right away. Taking the vial to his desk, he set up his instruments, then carefully uncorked it. An amazingly strong smell emanated from it, making his perfumer's heart beat quickly -- the purest, most round and pink lotus bouquet he had smelled in years, along with a hint of rose and a blend of citrus topnotes he could not quite tease apart yet. Unable to resist, he drew the vial closer and inhaled from its lip deeply... trembled, seized, and collapsed forward onto his desk.

Yet he awoke not to the smell of spilled liquids and side-effects, but rather to the cool sensation of a morning mist brushing against his skin and a mild, not heady, white floral aroma rolling down upon him from above. He was at peace, rested, reposing in comfortable pleasure... and, he suddenly realized, sitting up with a start, in the middle of some sort of urban park at dawn, lying under a flower bush, covered in freezing dew and completely naked.

Father: Keiga, Lucid Water, a painter and poet
Spouse: Baikou

Likes: Scents of woods, clear bright florals, citrus fruits, foggy and misty weather, zither music, assigning mental imagery to scents/music

Dislikes: Rancid smells, fishy and briny smells, scary, domineering women, not having any privacy, being touched without permission

Interests: Developments in botany, the other beautiful arts, magical philosophy concerning the Silver World

Health issues: As a child, he would have occasional seizures; they disappeared, then reappeared after the incident 6 years ago and now strike when he is under a great deal of stress

Romantic inclinations: women who are Baikou heart

Personality: A largely kind-hearted, gentle, polite, and considerate man, most people find Hitsuga a very pleasant person to be around. He is, however, rather introverted, and requires a great deal of privacy to feel secure. Security in general is a difficult thing for Hitsuga to achieve; though happy when social relations are harmonious and his creative work is appreciated, any sort of small detail going wrong or a hint of a budding negative relationship can set him on the track to a panic attack. At times he develops panic attacks worrying about his panic attacks, inflating his stress to enormous levels. Even worse, his childhood seizures, which he had believed cured, have returned since his unfortunate encounter six years ago, usually striking him when he is in a state of extreme fear.

In an attempt to control his life so that these situations do not arise, Hitsuga tries always to maintain warm, polite, not-too-close but helpful relationships with everyone while always reserving a safe private space to take refuge within. He also takes advantage of his unusually keen sense of smell and training in perfumery to perform aromatherapeutic rites on himself, a practice that gives him a reassuring sense of competence and control. Control is key -- he strongly believes that in order to have flourishing creativity one must first establish safety and structure.

His sudden relocation into Gaia has badly-rattled the structure of calm and security he had worked for years to build around himself back home, leaving him somewhat broken as a result. His neurotic tendencies, always kept carefully concealed behind walls and a candy coating of pleasantness, are far more readily apparent now in the face of many things that are still unknown and frightening to him. Though still polite, helpful, and generally good-hearted, one would also immediately label him to be a very "jumpy" sort of man.

Though he can speak just fine and communicates this idea with eloquent writing and fluid thought, Hitsuga prefers to keep his conversation to projection whenever possible as it is more private and it is less likely he will draw unwanted attention to himself. Years of doing this has crippled him a bit verbally, making his words stumble on themselves when he talks via mouth, though he is only sorely out of practice...

User Image Baikou - heart His best friend since childhood, his most trusted confidant, and his wife. Finally

Eiyou - confused While not having an ill relationship with his mother, he gradually grew apart from her during his childhood as he felt she favored Eikou. When she did not support him after his failed marriage, he felt even more alienated from her; he currently does not speak with her much.

Eitatsu - gonk crying Though terrified of his grandmother and occasionally receiving real verbal abuse from her, Hitsuga largely agrees with her condemnation of him. Indeed, it is, he thinks, all his fault...

Keiga - neutral As he was rarely at home during Hitsuga's childhood, they never became close. Furthermore, Keiga has never gone out of his way to help Hitsuga after the boy came of age. Hitsuga can't help feeling ashamed, believing that his father is disappointed in his Dreaming son, and things are very distant and awkward between them.

Eikou - heart Despite a somewhat strained childhood together, Eikou has now become Hitsuga's closest friend -- not that he has many other close friends at all. He hopes to someday repay the unconditional support she showed him.

The Golden World

Kitsuo - 3nodding His former tutor, now employer, a skilled philosopher specializing in mundane chemistry and perfumery as well as magically-assisted alchemy; he is currently trying to break into the Jasmine Road group of merchants. In his youth, Hitsuga felt that Kitsuo was always looking out for him; now older and wiser, Hitsuga is sometimes suspicious that Kitsuo often acts a bit less than morally.

Gaia

-Friends-

Phaerna Rachel Breslin - 3nodding he considers her a friend because he feels it would be horrid of him not to, even though they have not spoken since his moving out. If not for Phaerna discovering Hitsuga in the park, shortly after his arrival to Gaia, and furthermore offering him a place to stay, things may have been much, much rockier for him than they were. He owes her utmost thanks for allowing him a safe place, and only wishes he could have been a more gracious houseguest.

User Image Boyan - sweatdrop Boyan was easily the last person Hitsuga expected to call a friend, given the foot they'd gotten off on with one another. However it was also Boyan who was there to steady him and assure him that things would be all right when he finally reached his breaking point. Hitsuga, though still embarrassed to have been seen in such disarray, feels he owes Boyan quite a bit for finally helping him clear some of the poison from his mind.

User Image Rika - 3nodding She is becoming one of his strongest allies in this new world. He is not shy about calling her a friend as Lady Rika has done much for him. Up to and including gifting him with a new home. He only hopes that she will find her trust in his abilities to be well-placed...

User Image Melody - whee Melody, in many ways, breaks the mold of what Hitsu expects of women. She seems to have no use for things such as formalities and shares a closeness with her family that Hitsuga finds staggering compared to his own upbringing. Their friendship has grown close enough to allow him to confide in her in exchange for allowing her to do the same. He hopes her motherhood will be a joyful one.

-Acquaintences-

User Image Setsushi - 3nodding He is, undoubtedly, a very kind and polite sort. He and Hitsuga are very much alike in their demeanor regarding serving others, which, perhaps, is why it seems they have trouble getting past their formalities with one another to form a real friendship as of yet...

User Image Yousei - sweatdrop He met Yousei once briefly on the day of his arrival into Gaia. He has not seen her since. Hitsuga hopes to meet her properly, and apologize to her for having had to see him in such a state.

User Image Nusumu - 3nodding She arrived unexpectedly and Hitsuga invited her in out of the oncoming storm. She seemed intrigued by his craft, though moreso in the ingredients he uses than in perfumes themselves. Hitsuga finds it a shame that Lady Nusumu is held back from being a cook by her apparent young age...

User Image Kikushou - sweatdrop A young one who, quite literally, dropped in out of nowhere on Setsushi's home. All things considered, she seems to have taken it well, and is a very pleasant and polite child, clearly from a very good upbringing. Though it was difficult for Hitsuga being the one to inform Kiku that he really had no idea how they, and the others, had gotten to Gaia OR how they were going to get back...

Nozomi Gingitsune - smile He has since forgiven her for the misunderstanding and is glad that Kikushou is being looked after by her and her father. It is his hope that he and Lady Omi can put this nasty business fully behind them now.

User Image Oukou - sweatdrop He's not sure that things are all right between them now, but at the very least, Oukou no longer seems to resent him. It would seem that her angry front is, perhaps, a wall between the world and what she truly feels...

User Image Boyue - sweatdrop Lady Melody's husband. Not a bad meeting. Not a good meeting. Hitsuga supposes the young man had much more on his mind than formalities, however, with Melody announcing her early labor and he does not, at all, blame him. It is his hope that his transition into fatherhood is a happy one.

User Image Shuuka -- eek This young....man(?) took the liberty of letting himself into Hitsuga's home, so great was his desire to ensure he was a proper artist. Hitsu has been tasked with creating a fragrance for a maiden very special to Shuuka and....he believes it is very much in his best interest not to disappoint this one...

User Image Ruokei -- 3nodding A polite, and somewhat shy, young boy who visited the perfumery with his Zurai companion one afternoon. He and Hitsuga discussed perfume briefly before he was invited to share lunch with him and Baikou.

User ImageUser Image Eiji and Tsubaki -- 4laugh Melody's little ones! Though they seem to be easily-agitated, and to be taking their toll on their poor mother, they are disarming in their ability to be tiny and adorable.

User Image Silver -- confused Loud. Carries around squeaky ducks and is apparantly a friend of Setsushi's. Refers to himself as "Teh"? Hitsuga is unfamiliar with the meaning of such a title, but thought it may be impolite to ask.

User Image Kiyo -- smile She seems to be a pleasant young girl, but Hitsuga feels a bit bad that she fell and skinned her hands in her haste to rush across the street to meet him. Hopefully she's doing better...

User Image Tenkyuu -- 3nodding Someone Hitsuga would not mind getting to know better, though he feels a bit inept in the presence of such a regal woman. She has a way with animals...or at least with one in particular. It seems to him that she hides years of sadness behind her calm exterior.

veryVERY rough and embarrassing floorplan T__T;;

Rooms: 5 (Storefront, kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, workroom)
Floors: 1
Occupants: Hitsuga, Baikou
Please See Also: The Perfumery

Hitsuga makes his home in a small house across the street from Setsushi's Udon-ya with his wife, Baikou. Given to him in good faith by Rika that he would do something constructive to his craft with it, he has done his best not to disappoint her by converting it into as best of a duplicate of the place of business he had in the Golden World as possible.

The house, which had formerly been outfitted as a shop before its previous occupant had vacated it and allowed it to fall to ruin, has a storefront which is kept meticulously in order and dusted daily. It is here that shelves and cabinets displaying the best specimens of Hitsu's wares are arranged, and coincidentally also the first room one encounters when entering his home. There is a counter set up near the back, where transactions take place, and affixed to the wall behind it is an out-of-date phone model (which is obnoxiously loud when it rings).

Continuing through the doorway will bring one into the "living area" of the house, which begins with a small kitchen. There is nothing of note here -- only a sink, small counterspace, a stove, cupboards, a pantry, and a simple wooden table with two chairs, sometimes adorned with a bowl of flowers.

Directly ahead is the bathroom, and to the left is a narrow hallway. Venturing down the hallway, one would find two doors. To the left can be found the bedroom, inside which is a mattress arranged on what is a decidedly poorly-made frame. This has, however, tried to be compensated for, comfort-wise, by several blankets and pillows. Other furniture includes a bedside table, a dresser, and a small, mostly-unused and musty closet. There are not yet many personal effects in this room save for a vase of flowers, some stray books, and small colorful bottles arranged on the windowsill.

Across from the bedroom is a storage area that Hitsuga has converted, instead, to his workroom where the bulk of his perfumery work is done. In here can be found a broad workbench on which a staggering array of vials, bottles, and various other apparatus, is arranged. Spare equipment or equipment not currently in use is carefully put away in boxes and stacked against the wall. A refrigerator, formerly an occupant of the kitchen, has been relocated to this room, and is used largely to store flowers and other raw materials until he is ready to use them in his projects. Beside the fridge, there is a single cupboard, in which perfumes are usually stored to "age" after they've been mixed.

Outside, there is limited yardspace, including the front "main" yard where a scraggly aspen tree and a flowering almond bush currently grow (and have BEEN growing for the last span of years, from the look of it), and a small strip of sod that runs along the side of the house where, ideally, a garden might be kept.

Kan(Kan) -- Kan (sweet) to Baikou, Kankan (explosive) to Hitsuga. This little dragoncat takes up residence in the perfumery and, while she makes it clear she belongs to the woman who hatched her egg, tolerates Hitsu's presence when she is not around. When the two porcelain are home at the same time, however, Kan is quick to remind Hitsuga where he stands with her by chewing his shoes, knocking things off of his worktable, or otherwise making it clear Baikou is HER person, not his, and she does not like to share.

Being a creature of comfort, the first thing Hitsuga set about acquiring for himself in this new world of Gaia was a new teapot-and-cup. There is nothing that soothes rattled nerves on a deeper level than hot tea. Accompanied by the aloe-and-floral fragrance of the candle that came as an accessory to it and tea-brewing has become a vital part of his calming rituals.

Perfumes purchased from the udon-ya. The bouquets are familiar exotic scents from Golden World, but Hitsuga could not quite place their maker. He rarely uses them, but keeps them as beacons of familiarity.

Tea canisters, likewise from the udon-ya. The tin of Earl Gray was a gift from Lady Rika on his way back home, likely in hopes of staving off the panic attack she saw brewing in him. On a later return visit Hitsuga would find and be intrigued (perhaps a bit embarrassed) by the fact that several tea flavors had been fashioned after various other Porcelain Setsushi and Rika knew. Himself included. His own tea, he finds, tastes largely of hibiscus and citrus, with the very slightest hint of a bitter note.

As a merchant and child of the Empire, Hitsuga is well-aware that how he looks influences people just as much as how well-made his products are. He is, therefore, very self-conscious about his appearance in most cases and keeps a small collection of Gaian cosmetics in his bathroom's medicine cabinet to enhance his features where needed.

Contacting Karma:

Karma is in the WA State area and in the Pacific timezone (meaning if you want to know what time it is for her, just look at what time it currently is on Gaia)

Her sleep schedule is all sorts of erratic, but she is most usually a nightowl and most prolific in activity during the late afternoons/evenings.

You can most easily reach Karma on AIM under the name kanatta, however her privacy settings are in place to avoid unwanted contacts, so if you plan to reach her in this manner, please PM with your own AIM name as well. She'll have to add you to her list before you can see her online ^^; ((PS - if she suddenly goes quiet mid-chat, it usually means she's gone idle to tend to something/pass out, or the taskbar has eaten your IM window. She is not ignoring you, she promises))

Karma is happily open to RPs with Porcelain players, new and old. If your character should like to meet Hitsuga or make use of the perfumery, please PM, harass in-thread, or give her tail a twist on AIM and she will get back with you as soon as she recollects enough brain cells.
