Sovann was stuck with the manful task of preparing klah for the Weyr. He was certainly not the only kitchen assistant assigned to that task, but he had the feeling that he had been given it because of the shannagins that he and his friends had been up to with the Klah-Off. Fortunately, he did know how to brew a good mug of klah, for all that he hadn't bothered with it for the contest. Diligently he worked at his task until he had gotten to a point where he felt that he could stop to enjoy his own handiwork. Taking what he intended to be a brief break, he untied the apron from around his neck and let it hang from his waist. It tied in the back as well, fortunately, so it didn't go anywhere... but this was much more comfortable. Humming one of his own off-key tunes, he picked up a mug and filled it with fresh Klah right from the source.

For once, Kiriwar was a bit late in his usual times of dipping into the Dining Hall. He had his schedule, of sorts, around his chores, but he had finished his cleaning of the cellar later than he normally would. So now he had the hope of seeing someone in the Dining Hall that he had never met before, which was ever interesting -- last time he had stepped into the Hall at his non-usual time, he met Nandeli. This was almost guaranteed to be intriguing. The Vintner peered around a little as he stepped into the Dining area, trying to look for an interesting new face.
He paused, though, spotting a group of servants working in the kitchen, trying to bring up a barrel from the cellar. There was no way the little ladies could get it up the rest of the stairs... He smiled crookedly, offered to help, then stepped up, picking up the barrel with a soft grunt, the muscles of his arms bared because of the simple tunic he wore. He brought the barrel up and set it down near Sovann, putting drinks with drinks, before glancing up at the other with a big grin. "May I leave this here?" he asked, a touch of playfulness in his tone.

Oh Shards who was that? ... He looked familiar, why did he look- Oh dear. Was that... was that a hint of-- could it be?-- playfulness? No! He was imagining things, he was...! Startled, Sovann moved abruptly, sweeping the pot of klah off of the counter in his haste to put distance between himself and the distracting new person. He had noticed Kiriwar just in time to drop the mug he was holding, and it shattered, spilling all over the floor to mingle with the already dropped pot's contents. Somehow, the pot hadn't also shattered, but it had dumped quite a bit of klah onto the recently washed floor. "... J-Just an accident! Sorry, sorry!" Ordinarily, Sovann probably would've managed more than the yelp of a reply that he had come up with, but this was different. He didn't like to notice himself noticing people, not ever. It was not as though it happened frequently, but when it did it was problematic, and seemed to lead to bouts of clumsiness or just plain silly behavior. He had experienced the latter just a day or so ago with ... someone else, but this? This was most assuredly not good. "Maybe you'd better m-move it?" he managed, a little alarmed at the idea of the clean barrel becoming sodden with fresh klah.

Kiriwar was more than surprised at the clatter of the pot falling, eyebrows lifting as the klah spread over the floor. But what worried him was the shattering mug, and he quickly stood up straight, before beginning to move forward to help. "Really, it's not a problem... You're probably right." Quickly, he lifted the barrel again, setting it a few feet away. But just as soon as he had left, he returned, moving to help the other boy pick things up.
"You're all right, though, yes? Mind your feet, so you don't step on any of the pieces," he said, ducking down to pick up the pieces that were big, holding them gingerly in his hands. At the same time, he looked up at the other with worried brown eyes, a worried expression on his face.

Coughing in a very embarrassed way, Sovann flushed beneath his dark tan, and went searching for a mop. A mop, a mop, oh FARANTH he needed a mop! ... There! Only... only it was in use, but he needed it more! "'Scuse me, I need that real quick, all right?" Oh Shards and Shells he was embarrassed. Flustered, too. He wasn't used to so much company, and close to his age, and all... everyone at the Weyr was so fardling attractive. What was with that? Did the dragonriders only Search appealing boys and girls? Was that it? Stumbling over himself a little before he finally retrieved some of his dignity, he helped Kiriwar to pick up the shards before he began to frantically clean the floor. "I'm... I'm fine." He was never going to get used to this, he really wasn't. By the Egg, he had gotten klah all over the place! Furiously, he mopped at the floor, hoping to get it cleaned up before the cooks started noticing things. Though how they had missed the crash that had come when he had gone berserk, he didn't know.

Kiriwar continued to pick up the littler pieces, before stepping back so that Sovann could begin mopping the floor up. As the other did that, he glanced around nervously for the cooks, knowing the tempers that could flare, before moving a bit closer to take the mop, smiling crookedly up at Sovann. "Here, let me. You can tell them I did it, if they notice," he offered, gently removing the mop from the other's hands and beginning to work on mopping instead. "I didn't mean to scare you like that.. er, what's your name?"

"You didn't... scare me, I was distract-- Uh. My name's Sovann, and I'm usually not this articulate." No, he was usually more articulate, and much less clumsy. Every now and again, though, something like this would crop up, and it was getting to be problematic. He let the mop be taken from him so that he could edge a step back from Kiriwar, who seemed only to pleased to come nearer. Oh, the man was probably just being friendly, but 'friendly' was enough to make Sovann's hands tremble. He clenched them into fists. "It's not so bad, it's almost cleaned up, I think. I hope." The man looked really familiar, though. Had he perhaps attended the Klah-Off, or something? That could do it. Hmm. They hadn't really been introduced before, though, so that could explain how he didn't know the vintner's name.

Kiriwar quickly finished up mopping the floor and stooped to pick up the last few pieces of the mug, before stepping over to put the mop in a bucket. "Sovann... that name is familiar. Were you at the, ah... Klah-off?" he asked, looking at the other boy thoughtfully, gaze skimming the other. He was familiar, physically, but he knew he had heard that name before. "I was there for a short while, and I think I saw you... I know I heard your name at least."

Sovann smiled slightly, tucking a lock of hair absently behind one ear. "I thought you looked familiar. Yes, I was at the Klah-Off. Actually, I ran the Klah-Off along with my friends Okassis, and Inaari. Nan was there as well." But he did not count Nan as being among his friends. Friendly though she might be, Nandeli was trouble for him. "You probably tried the klah I made with Okassis, I'd guess. It's not like this stuff," he said, gesturing to the floor to indicate the klah that Kiriwar had just finished cleaning off of it. "I don't remember hearing your name."

Kiriwar smiled immediately, looking amused. He knew he had seen the other somewhere, and it made it all the more intriguing that this boy had actually taken part as one of the competitors. "Nan was there, yes... She announced my arrival," he said, laughing softly and offering a hand to Sovann, his gaze warm. "I'm Kiriwar. A pleasure to meet you, Sovann."

"Did she? I must not have put the name to your face," Sovann mused, trying to remember. "Hnnnn... you're right, she did. Sorry, I forget these things, sometimes. Nice to meet you, too." Even though he had dropped the mug and half-destroyed a pot full of klah as a result of meeting him. It wasn't exactly Kiriwar's fault, now was it? No, it was entirely his own. Ah well. He'd probably catch trouble over it later, but for now he was enjoying the brief respite that the incident had created for him. "Nan is a scheming wench," he said with a slight pout, hiding the expression by ducking his head for a moment, and turning to set the counter to rights. "But I'll get back at her eventually."

Kiriwar blinked in surprise at the expression on Sovann's face, before laughing heartily at his words, nodding a little. "Nan is rather good at scheming... she got you good," he said, grinning broadly and putting his hands on his hips. "I'm sure you can find a way to get back at her -- just not too mean, though. Pranks are fun, as long as they aren't cruel." He leaned back a little, before humming thoughtfully. "Should we make some new klah?"

His eyes glittering with mischief, Sovann grinned, glancing back at Kiriwar. "Oh, it won't be too mean... and I promise if we're making Klah, I won't put trundlebug legs in it this time." He laughed, shaking out the nervousness that had caused his flustered behavior. Well, that was only part of it, but that didn't matter. "Might as well get started before the cook looks this way." He took out another pot, humming an off-key tune once again as he assembled the various ingredients. "So, what's your pleasure? What do you think we should put in this 'un?" Maybe some cinnamon, or vanilla perhaps? Something spicy or sweet... tasty.

"... Did you really put trundlebug legs in the one at the Klah-off?" asked Kiriwar after a moment, moving to follow the other boy, watching him curiously as he gathered what they would need to make the klah. "Put vanilla, with a touch of nutmeg... something to give it lots of flavor, too. I like a flavorful klah," he said, grinning at the other.

"That's what the rumor says. One of them, anyway. Hmmn, vanilla and nutmeg, sure. Something else, I think, as well." Sorting through the spices, Sovann grabbed what most appealed to him, as well as the ones he had promised Kiriwar. "Actually, you know what? Sit back. I want you to tell me what I've put in this when I'm done. Turn around. You're a vintner, right?" He'd seen Kiriwar's hands, which were a particularly interesting shade of berry. "You're probably fardling good at this kind of thing." He decided to wait to make sure that the man was turned around before he chose his ingredients. It would be more fun if he didn't know what they might be chosen from.
