Who: Varun/Kinsey and Tari/Kali
Where: Large shopping mall
When: Mid-afternoon
Weather: Nice and sunny, but a chilly breeze

"C'mon Vars."

Varun slinked along behind his guardian, twirling a finger through his hair as he paused to stop and peer into each shop window. Kinsey had said they were here for something specific and that if he was good (and by good, she meant no kissing Raevans he'd only just met, and no biting them either!), she'd let him get a book from the store on their way out. Hurrying along, however, was not part of the deal and the aquatic Frei would have absoutely none of this hand-tugging his guardian seemed so keen on.

Kinsey gave a great sigh and pushed her dark hair out of her face, the rubies on her face catching a stray beam of sunshine from the windows above. It was an absolutely gorgeous day out. All she needed was a pair of shoes for jogging, one pair of shoes!, and taking Varun along had turned a ten minute trip into a three hour adventure. It certainly felt like three hours, anyways. Her stomach rumbled and Kinsey groaned, glancing over her shoulder at her charge. "Varun. Come ON."

Varun snorted and flared out both sets of fins, green eyes narrowing as he continued at his steady pace. "No. Tell not Varun. Will come. Time." If she was going to drag him out, she was going to do what he liked. Varun smirked to himself, stopping in front of a window with pants. Varun grunted and looked down at his ribbon. "Pants," he snorted.

If there was one thing Tari loved as much as her mother hated, it was shopping outings. Sunny days, cafes, new and exciting shops to poke about in, strange people to stare at (and who stared back at her) - Tari loved it all. So Kali, despite her hated of people, found herself making trips into town more and more often, rather than having things delivered to the house.

Today was best of all, Tari decided, because her mama needed to buy certain animals for spell ingredients. So while Kali argued back and forth with poor store clerks about what she did and didn't need licenses to buy because she was just going to kill them (and the subsequent panic and outrage from the clerks), Tari was free to waste her afternoon staring at her new favourite subject: fish.

Voices rose and fell in the background as Tari floated back and forth in front of the aquariums. "Fishy, fishy, fishy," she sang to herself, entranced with all the bright colours and different sizes and shapes of the creatures. There were bright orange ones like Tangaroa, and smaller bright blue ones like Sevelin...

She wondered if she could convince her mama to let her have some fish of her own. Tari turned back around to face the clerk desk in the middle of the store. A large sigh escaped, even Tari able to see that her mama was too busy arguing to consider Tari's request.

A flash of red caught her eye, and Tari stared past the desk and out the glass front of the store. A floating red! A floating red with ribbons and a glow inside! A Raevan! Tari bounced in happiness and darted closer to the front of store. Peering out at the Raevan at the window of the store opposite, she was relieved to see it wasn't the red-and-black of Satan, but a red-and-yellow-and-green. Someone she didn't know yet. Someone... she peered closer through the glass... with FINS!

"Fishy!"

The loud cry burst from her lips and Tari was speeding out the door of the shop before she thought about it. Darting over, she cried again, "Fishy!" and slammed to a halt just before hitting the other Raevan. She beamed at him. "Hihi! Another fishy Raevan, yay! Tari so happy! New fishy brother to Tangy or Sevlin?"

Varun was across the hall, still considering the usefulness of pants (or rather, how silly they look) in the window of one of those teenager-targeted shops. All the male models seemed to wear were pants. It was very silly, in his not-so-humble opinion, he looked quite dashing in his vest. Kinsey told him so every day. Speaking of, where was his woman? He saw her only a moment ago, muttering under her breath and-

"Fishy!"

The wild cry startled Varun and the Frei snapped open wings and headfins, trying to determine the source of the exclamation. He did not expect to see another Raevan come hurtling towards him! The panic that spread through the youngling was a very foreign feeling; he threw himself against the wall and braced for impact. There was very little he could against the inevitable and...thank the gods (that's what Kinsey always said), she had stopped.

Exhaling heavily, the aquatic Raevan slid off the wall and stared at the smiling female, fins and wings still spread out to the fullest, trying to warn the stranger off another attack. Of course...look at her. She didn't even need to show off to look dangerous, Varun decided, which was quickly followed by thoughts of how much he liked that. It was very impressive.

"Varun, fishy? Yes." He pointed to himself and nodded before reaching up to touch a flared headfin. "Tari? Yes?" He pointed to the female, tipping his head to the side. It sounded like a name, but the more he tried to get Kinsey to teach him words, the more if felt like he came across impossibly strange ones. "Tangy? Sevlin?" He shrugged and shook his head, having never heard either mentioned in his life. "No. Varun? Just Varun."

"Varun?" Tari echoed. Correctly interpreting that this was the other Raevan's name, Tari 'danced' in mid-air and gave a huge, warm smile. "Varun-fishy, nice to meet!"

Darting slightly closer, Tari inspected the headfins and wings that were being spread out in warning - a warning that was completely lost on her. All that registered was the pretty gold colour (obviously a marvelous choice for any Raevan) and the delicate combination of spines and membrane. It was much more interesting to Tari than normal wings, which she got to see plenty of on herself.

"Has no met Tangy or Sevlin? They also fishy," she explained. Which was the reason she'd mistaken Varun for being related to them, but if they hadn't even met, then maybe not. Still, more Raevan-fishies for Tari to be friends with!

"Varun new, yes? Meet many Raevans? Must meet Tari friends, yes!" She clapped her hands in excitement. This was the best plan yet, to have all her friends in one place and they could all meet and be friends together - it would be the happiness of one friend multiplied by... many. Which was... a lot. Yes, a lot of happiness!

Varun rumbled deep in his chest, nodding his approval when pronounced his name as dictated. "Yes. Varun," he replied, rewarding Tari with a nod. His fins had already begun to relax despite Tari's inspection, and he held them out at midpoint. While the bubbly female did not strike him as terribly threatening, he could not forgot the near-attack that stood as their first meeting.

The autumn Frei remained silent while the older Raevan babbled on, folding his arms over his chest as he listening passively. He was patient; when he spoke, he didn't want to battle with all of Tari's questions. He didn't have to wait long and gave the warrior maiden a gracious nod. She was very good at guessing, it seemed. "Varun, new? Yes. Many Raevans met? Yes, again. Eiry, Riviner, Lulu, Zul. Praaaaajna." His face became cloudy as he mentioned the last and he rubbed his neck thoughtlessly, lost deep in his own thought for a brief moment before finishing his answers. "Meet Tari friends? More fish, like Varun?" He couldn't help but be curious of other Raevans like himself.

Which lead to his questions about Tari, of course. Drifting closer slowly, wings still at half-mast, he reached over and pointed a pale finger at the females head feathers. "What? Whatfor? Fins? Broken?" They didn't look like his fins, that was for certain. The pieces were clearly separated (and not good for much other than show, if you asked him). He paused only breifly before brushing his fingers across Tari's impressive gauntlets, still awed by the image she could broadcast without even trying. "Yes," he informed her, nodding as he motioned to the objects in question. "Yes. Good. Pretty! Very."

Though they were pretty, that wasn't the right word for it, not really. However, Varun couldn't think of anything to properly label them with, and Prajna certainly liked being called pretty. It was meant was a compliment, so it could be pretty, right?

Tari blinked at the onslaught of names Varun rattled off. "Riv, yes," she nodded, remembering him as a friend of Laz's she had been introduced to at one of the beach parties. Those other names weren't familiar at all, though. Could Varun have met more Raevans than Tari even though he was younger? She shook her head and added, "Others, no."

At the mention of the other aquatic Raevans, Tari bobbed in mid-air, clapping her hands. "Yes, fishies should meet. Tangy, he orange and spikey and all-" Tari puffed herself up and tried to look intimidating. "And Sevlin, he sparkly and blue and preeeetty. But Varun is most colourful fishy! And best clothes!" Not that Tari was biased, seeing his Japanese outfit, no.

She should make sure they all met. Really, all three of them together would be wonderful. Better than the aquariums back in the pet store, even!

"Broken?" Golden claws flew to Tari's smaller headwings in a panic. Feeling around delicately, she didn't find anything out of place, or feel any pain. "What? Fins? Nono, Tari not fishy, no fins. Has wings!" She flapped her wings in demonstration, making sure to spread the feathers so Varun could see that wings were made of smaller parts. Tari might not know much, but having a mother who took animals apart for magical purposes had some advantages. "Fins for fishy, to swim. Wings for birdies, to fly."

A soft, misty look appeared in Tari's eyes. Hands rose to clasp each other near her chin. "Pretty? Really really? Mama call them 'dangerous' - Tari not sure what means, but sounds not-good..."

Tari was quiet for a moment, wondering if that made Tari not-good, too. But then she shrugged and beamed at Varun. "So, why Varun-fishy here?"

Varun almost laughed when Tari puffed herself like he usually did when confronted with other males. So Tangy was like him? How curious. "Best?" Varun's face lit and he beamed, pirouetting once to give Tari the full effect of his outfit. He loved the vest; his guardian always told him how wonderful it was. If he was best, he would definitely have to go and meet Tari's other 'fishy friends'. There wouldn't be any contest.

""Oh. Wings? Wings like Varun's fins." He nodded, ghosting a hand over one of his own golden fins as she demonstrated the differences between their sets of wings. Nevertheless, the gold looked very pretty on his new friend. He nodded eagerly when she questioned his judgment. "Yes! Yes, yes!" he insisted/ "Dangerous? Maybe. But is good. Better? Beauuuuutiful. Pretty. Perrrrrrfect." He certainly hoped he was using those words right. He'd heard Kinsey used each a few times. Speaking of.

"Whatfor? Kinsey. My Kinsey." He sighed and glanced around with a frown. Where was his Kinsey, anyways? "Was....shopping. For....something?" He shrugged and shook his head, hands out and open to the side as though he was questioning all the strangeness of Kinsey's humanity. "Whatfor Tari?"

Tari nodded enthusiastically as Varun questioned his status as 'best' clothed. "Yesyes, best clothes. Japan... best! Tari has Japan hair, yes, knows is best." And somehow she was also part tree? But that part always managed to confuse her, so it was best to stick with the hair.

"Tari is not not-good? Um, good, Tari means..." Speaking of confusing herself. There had to be a better work for not-good, but so far Tari hadn't found it. "Yay!" Tari gave herself over to happiness at the idea of dangerous still being good - perfect, even. To celebrate, she launched herself at Varun for a giant hug.

Arms around him, she continued talking. "Tari here with mama. Mama also shop, animal store but not fishy. Scaly not-fishy animal. Has claws... No remember name. Is for mama magics."

Varun preened happily. He wasn't quite sure what a Japan was, perhaps just a way to describe him? That was fine. If Japan was best and he was best, then Japan worked okay as well. "Yes, Tari good. Very good. Per- UH!" The hug was surprising, almost threatening and for a very brief moment, the young Raevan had to fight down the urge to puff out again.

Instead, he settled for taking a few deep breaths and slinging one arm around Tari's neck, trying to get more comfortable. "Magics?" Varun tipped his head to the side and flared his headfins, intrigued by the idea. Kinsey had mentioned magic once or twice before, mostly how she couldn't do it and her brother could, and how was that fair?

Varun shrugged, still in some awkward embrace with his new friend. He tried to ignore the feeling; no one had ever hugged the redhead before and quite frankly, the autumnal Frei had no idea what to do. Better to do as Tari does and make less of a fool of himself. "Go, us? Find Kinsey, mama, go?"

He gave Tari a calculating look. "Whatnow, Tari?"
PostPosted: Thu May 07, 2009 2:21 am

Tari was instantly taken with this 'arm around the neck' kind of hug. She mimicked Varun's movement, hooking one of her own arms around his neck. Hmm, it seemed they could even be side-by-side while doing this, instead of having to face each other. Hugging while walking! Er, floating. Still, best invention ever!

"Varun so smart!" she enthused, hugging tighter. She turned so they were both facing the same direction, arms still slung around each others' necks. "Look! Varun make way to hug while wal- moving."

She nodded when Varun questioned about magic. "Mmhmm. Mama all-" she made a whoosh-ing noise with accompanying hand movements, "- wind and-" here an improvisation of crackling flames, "- fire. And books and charms and spells. Tari not know much, but fun to watch mama at magic."

It was hard not to beam a little harder, or puff up a little, when Varun deferred to her about their next move. Not that she disapproved with his idea at all, but it was strange and nice to have the final decision. "Yes, find mama and Varun's 'Kinsey'. Good plan. Then go has fun. What fun for Varun?" she asked, as they began floating in search of their humans.

Oh, that had done it. Varun started to preen while Tari complemented his invention, running his free hand through his hair and looking entirely too pleased with him. "Yes. Varun smart," he agreed, tipping his head to watch Tari's explanation of magic. It sounded a lot like a storm. Varun didn't particularly care for storms, but the wind and the rain were very powerful.

"Hm. Varun like words." The young Raevan frowned. That didn't really seem like something to play with friends, though. "Ah! Like...stuff." Without a better way to word it, Varun pointed to a small vendor in the center of the large hallway and led them over to it. He told the little man they were 'just looking', flaring his fins and waiting until the gentlemen was busy with a middle-aged woman before snatching one of the trinkets and floating away.

"See? Is fun," Varun said, holding his newest prize out for Tari to admire. "Is fun, but make Kinsey-"

And as if by magic, his guardian appeared and snatched the child's toy from the autumnal Frei, scowling fiercely. "Varun, I told you, you can't take things when I'm not around to pay for them. Would it kill you to try and remember that?"

Varun shrugged listlessly, waiting for his Kinsey to march over to the vendor and return his trinket before confiding in Tari, "Is a killjoy, my Kinsey."

A strange feeling swept through Tari as she watched Varun take the item from the unsuspecting shopkeeper. Despite Varun being a new friend, and Tari liking him immensely, she felt somehow... disapproving... of the idea of not-paying. Tari had no money herself, but she was aware that most people who didn't live with their mamas had to use money to buy things, and work hard to earn the money to buy things.

So she was relieved when a woman - Varun's Kinsey, she assumed - intervened. So great was her relief that, as Kinsey returned the item, Tari decided to show off a bad habit of her own. Between giggles that threatened to become snickers, she gestured Varun closer. "Var, Var, watch Tari. Tari has good steal trick, too. Watch, watch!"

Still giggling, she darted up behind the stall owner, who was paying closer attention to his stock and not to anyone hovering behind him. Green eyes shifted from side to side, checking for anyone other than Varun watching. One hand was pressed to her mouth, trying to smother her laughs. Meanwhile, black locks of hair began rising up from Tari's shoulders, moving in a manner that couldn't be caused by wind. They twined forward like black snakes in the air, brushing against the man's short hair.

Two shrieks split the air: the man as his toupee fell to the ground, and Tari as she 'tasted' the fake hair. "Ick! Ick!" Tari spat as she sped back to Varun. "Bad man, not real hair. Taste NO GOOD!"

With Tariel there to distract him from Kinsey, Varun's ill will faded as quickly at it had blossomed. Tari had a trick too? This was something he simply must see! "Watching! Watching Tari!" he replied, floating a little closer as he watched his new friend zip away. The way she darted across the hallway made the youngling think of the birds outside the window, so quick and still graceful all the same. Perhaps she really was part-bird, like her wings.

He was not given much time to think on it, though. The angelic Frei had started to do something; she was making her hair move! Glancing breifly at his own deep red hair, he frowned, looking up just in time to witness the man's hair fall to the ground. Varun yelped with laughter, shaking his head back and forth as his friend zipped back over. "Good trick? Yes! Very good, very good trick, Tari. Stupid man? Yes. Fake hair." Varun snickered again and rumbled to himself, quite pleased. He had no idea Tari did not mean for it to happen that way.

He noticed then his guardian's look. Raising his eyebrows, he chuckled again and tapped Tari on the shoulder. "Tari? Find Tari's mama now, yes? Go now," he asked, trying to shift away from his enraged woman. Oh, he was in so much trouble...but only if she could catch him, right? Tugging on Tari's wrist, he nodded down the hallway. "Come! Varun and Tari, find Tari's mama!"

Plan Getaway, go!
PostPosted: Tue Jun 02, 2009 2:11 am

Still sputtering from the taste of toupee, Tari allowed herself to be pulled along by Varun. Despite her trick not working out as planned, it seemed that Varun was still quite impressed, so Tari was mollified. She allowed herself a small smile of satisfaction before switching her attention to their sudden, swift departure.

Lacing her golden talons through Varun's fingers, Tari whooped an enthusiastic, "Okies! Go go!" and took off away from the chaos behind them. Loud giggles echoed through the walkway as the two Raevans zipped and zagged, ducking around dumbfounded shoppers. Luckily they had an advantage over any humans - the ability the go over when around was not an option.

With this secret weapon, they easily outpaced any human followers (Varun-Kinseys or toupee-men) that may or may not have been in pursuit. The door to the pet shop slammed against the wall as they flew in without slowing, the sudden, startling noise setting off squawking birds and squealing critters.

Over the top of the din, and the loud protests of staff running to calm the animals, Tari called, "Mama! Mama? Tari and friend need hide now." She floated around the store, peering behind cages and displays. The further she made her way around the store, the slower Tari's progress became. She slowly dipped closer to the ground. No matter where she looked, she couldn't see her mama's black-and-white clothing, or the dark red hair that acted as a beacon from far away. Voice quiet now, she tried again. "Mama...?"

Her hand tightened on Varun's. Turning to her new friend, she blinked wide eyes. "Tari is... Lost?"

Varun followed suit, whooping shortly after Tari did; her exhilaration was contagious! He was more than happy to let her lead the way, finding his own challenge in keeping up with one so agile and swift. His new friend was great fun! The aquatic Frei's fins were pressed close to his head and against his back, creating as little wind resistance as possible as they darted to and fro.

The redhead finally slowed when his friend whipped the door open, slightly startled by the ruckus the animals caused. Flaring his fins out to the side, he stared at all the upset critters with wide eyes, momentarily oblivious to the angel's plight. He did not understand why all the animals were locked in small cages, squeaking and screeching like they were upset or in pain. Cringing, he looked to Tari just as she was glancing back at him.

His alarm was suddenly replaced by concern for his new friend, something he hadn't really experienced before. "Lost?" he parroted, brows furrowing. "What is lost can be found." Kinsey always found everything she lost, after all. Even if it took a lot of cursing and throwing things. Inhaling deeply, the young Raevan looked around. Sure enough, they were the only people around, save for the man giving them a funny look from behind the counter.

Baring his teeth and flaring out his wings to the fullest, he floated over, Tari in tow, and slammed his pale hand down on the desk, causing the stranger to jump. Keeping his most intimaditing look on, Varun snarled "Tari's mama? Where? You? Tell us. Now!" He'd find Tari's mama. He knew how. He'd seen Kinsey, seen what she did.
