The silence seemed to stretch over the room as the teacher left them there, and Antony couldn't seem to come up with something to say. At least, not anything that didn't make him sound like an a**. So he gave up, letting out a sigh and running a hand over his face.
"Really, Jace, I'm surprised," he said. "What after your lesbian lover practically threatened to cut something off--"

Her metal legs scraped against the floor as she slammed her fist down against the wall; more in anger than in being aggressive, eyes blazing. "What the ******** are you even talking about," she said. "What the ******** do you even think you're talking about. I don't have a 'lesbian lover', okay, if you're referring to Rel I don't know what the ******** you're talking about or playing at and actually, you know what? I bet you'd be willing to make up any retarded lie at this point to make yourself look better. That's your schtick, Antony, you always want everyone to ******** love you."
Jace slammed her palm down flat against the wall again. "Jesus," she said bitterly.

He just looked at her. It was a bit shocking, not being believed, especially when he was telling the truth, or a slightly exaggerated version of it. "It seems so," he said quietly. "Yes, I must really want everyone to love me." He looked around the room.
"Yes, everything I say to you must be a lie, because who would believe me if I said I could go invisible at offsetting times. Or the fact that I was possessed by a prince seeking revenge on my father for something that happened thousands of years ago. I wouldn't believe it. It's all some attention seeking bullshit from a strange, love hungry b*****d."
Then he snapped. "Oh yes, everything I say is a lie, even the fact that you told me right before we did it that you wanted me to date Delilah while you ran off and married Irelia."

"What the s**t?"
She flung herself down to sit on the stool that Ms. Lindy had vacated, though she forced her legs a little too hard on the iron bars and they warped with a tiny skree sound. "What the hell -- god, come on, why are you taking everything so literally?" (This was slightly unfair considering Jace was taking things pretty literally, but.) "Do I look like I'm engaged to Rel? Do I even look like I'm sleeping with Rel because the answer is holy s**t no I am not, is that your excuse for treating me like crap."
She flung a piece of chalk from the blackboard down; not at him, but it landed somewhere near his feet. "Who the hell cares that you go invisible? Everyone here's crazy. Who cares about the stupid Rudolfo incident -- that was someone searching for your dad, it didn't have anything to do with you. Holy ********! What's that got to do with anything?"

"It's got to do with the fact I only told a handful of people about it because I TRUSTED them," he said. "You, Irelia, who found out by mistake, to be honest, and Iggy. Chris and Rory found out as well, I think but that's ALL. Why in the world would I lie to you about something now when I've trusted you with something that I honestly LOATHE about myself?"
He forced himself to calm down. "Is it because we slept together or is it because I'm going to college?"

"Uh, how about it's because you don't tell me s**t," she said. "Irelia found out? Okay. Obviously she told you about it. A friend would tell me, I don't care how bad you've trusted me about everything else. This isn't about you loathing whatever, you self-hating little invisibean, this is about you being ******** avoidant. You're such a chick."

He snorted. "I didn't tell my dad, either, you know," he said. "But I think he knows. Okay, I'll come clean about everything, stuff that even Irelia's secret reading ability hasn't found out yet. Will that make you a bit happier?"

She was playing with one of the whiteboard markers; doodling, looking away from him, fine spikes of cherry-red hair falling into her face. It was Jace, so she was doodling a stick figure being hanged and filling up with spikes, spears and arrowheads. "Depends," she said. "Fire. Go ahead. Lay it on me. Before you say anything, though: all I want is the truth, not you trying to be all hey I'm Antony and I can get out of any situation by being articulate and charming, ho ho ho, I should be a ******** lawyer. I just want -- what's real, god damn it."

He hesitated. "It'll probably sound stupid," he warned her. "I mean, really, really delusional or something. But the fact is when I was a kid I met a--I met a guy. His name is Thanatos, and I was the only one that could see him, well, other than your sister, I think. I think your sister can see him. But he gave me my blade."
He pulled the blade out, showing it to her. "The spirit blade. You know it, right? I kill ghosts with it, all that. And I already told you I tended to have disappearing body parts. Well it turns out that there's a connection."

"Let me guess," said Jace, "you're actually a ghost."
By the way that she'd said it -- skeptical, dry -- it was obvious she had no idea that she had pretty much hit on the meat of the matter. One of her eyebrows was raised, though despite herself her gaze was crawling back to him and she was obviously listening to what he was saying. No surprise on the spirit blade; she'd seen it before. Had wished it had been present more than once, when she was in a pickle. "Sup, Casper."

He fingered the blade of the knife, looking at it instead of her for a long moment before speaking. "I'm part grim reaper," he said finally. "Shinigami, god of death, soul stealer, whatever you want to call it. We're talking the big bone guy with glowing blue eyes who rides a white horse and talks in all caps. Thanatso was training me for the future. He figured I'd be useful. And he dropped that b*****d Randolf on me because he was testing me. That or he's a real jerk. Could be either, or both."

Part grim reaper sounded to Jacoba a little like partly pregnant or partly epileptic, but instead of turning a completely skeptical brow she tapped her fingers on the whiteboard. Her brown shoulders were hunched. "So," she said, "if you're getting trained for that, why are you even bothering to ******** off to college, there's a question for you. Unless you're going to Death, Darque and Decay U to make out with goths, whatever, you know?"
Anthony did not fit with her vision of what death looked like. He combed his hair too completely.

"Honestly I think I'll just go because my Father found out somehow and thinks he'd like to be in a kegger party, or something," he admitted. "You're right in thinking it's pointless, but the reason it's pointless is because I'll live a rather long time. And even after my physical body is gone I'll still be around the living world. As an escort of sorts."
He looked at her, hesitating for a moment before shrugging. "I wasn't too thrilled, either."

Jace was picking at her fingernails off, chipping off a coat of red that Wisp must have guerilla-applied to her hands. Jace didn't go in for manicures. "Psychopomp," she said. "Jesus. Whatever. Bottom line is, that's you and that's your future, fine, okay; nobody says you have to turn into this, right? You can choose to do something else, around here nobody gives half a s**t about whether your d**k turns invisible and that still doesn't answer the question of why didn't you tell me this before and why have you been avoiding me."

Antony glared at her. "How was I to know there wasn't something serious between you and Irelia?" he asked. "You think you're a boy, Jace. It only makes sense that when I get hit by a girl and told to never go near you again that there's a reason for it! And I don't want to get in the way of what you think of as a normal relationship."
He shrugged. "It's as bad as a one time affair interrupting a committed relationship. At least that's what it seemed like to me."
