Rain was pouring in ernest, soaking the slopes and forests around the Weyr, just another typical day for the Weyr, but challenging to train and keep fit in. S'kagi had clearly been trying though, since although he'd changed clothes before making his way to the kitchens to grab a piece of bread and a drink, his hair was still quite damp, and showed the tell tale creases of being soaked while tied back to keep it from his eyes while flying with Coriath. ALl this and teaching Candidates and Weyrlings besides, it felt like it would be some time before the Weyr was able to catch it's collective breath.

Aderyn had been wandering all morning- with the rain outside pelting down, and Fir nowhere to be found, she felt a little out of place. For a little while she'd visited the creche, but had been a little too nervous to intrude upon the seemingly organized chaos of the place. So instead she took it upon herself to get a little more familiar with her surroundings. It was not until late morning that she stumbled into the kitchen area; the Weyr's tunnels and passageways were confusing, but Aderyn had discovered that finding her way was easier if one traveled not by way of innate knowledge of direction, but instead by degrees of heat- the sands in the Dragons' caverns produced wafts of warmth up all the tunnels with which it was connected, while the corridors which connected with the outside filtered in fresh, cool and salty sea air. The kitchens were easily found by following a warm draft until the scent of baking was carried to the traveler, and then the rest was easy. At the moment, the Candidate was attempting to stay out from underfoot, while snacking on some rolls a particularly sweet-faced, rotund woman had placed before her. She was not yet comfortable enough in the Weyr to offer her aid; although adequate at cooking, she was unaware of the order of the kitchen, and was unwilling to disrupt the orderly way in which the cooks and their assistants were working. She'd been studying the intricate dance of the cooks for some time before she noticed the intrusion of an older boy, his hair slicked back with wet, his eyes focused and a little intense. Aderyn smiled a wide, open smile at him from across the room. Although timid at first, she was quickly learning to overcome her trepidation.

It was slightly debatable if, when he turned toward her, he'd put her off being open for good, since the other half of his face when revealed, also revealed several scars, white and visible on his sun browned skin, and made no more subtle by being compared to the black hair sticking to his skin. He tossed the hot roll he'd snatched from hand to hand, letting it cool down, and also revealing the knot of a bronze-rider on his shoulder as he offered her an smile that was made slightly crooked by the scar through his lower lip. Catching the hot roll in one hand he made a hasty gesture, raking his fingers through his hair to try and comb wet strands down over the scars. "Enjoying our classic Ista Weather?" He asked, jokingly. She didn't look familiar, but he wasn't sure that meant much. He knew he hadn't searched her, though she looked young enough to be one of the horde of candidates and he wondered if she was.

The startling contrast between the sides of his face was shocking; Aderyn's smile almost faltered, and she was almost certain that her eyes widened slightly. She was shamed considerably by her response, and a blush coloured her cheeks; back in her cothold, she had seen many men and women alike scarred and arthritic from years of hard labor. It was foolish to assume that all of the Riders at the Weyr would be perfect specimens themselves, considering the amount of tireless work they were expected to perform. Her only saving grace was her rather quick recovery. Aderyn nodded and laughed in genuine amusement, despite her embarrassment, at his comment. Her braids bounced against her shoulders. "Yes actually! Its forcing me to finally find my way around the Weyr itself; although I admit that I'd much rather be outside..." She smiled again, wiping her hands on her soft leather pants, before offering a brown, calloused hand. "I'm Aderyn by the way. I don't believe we've met?" She wrinkled her nose, still unsure if they had actually been introduced. There were too many young people here to recall them all, but she was almost positive that she would have remembered this bronze-rider.

"Well if you find a low enough entrance you could probably swim from one side of the Weyr bowl to the other right now." He joked, though his brief glance down at his own shoes was an very subtle indicator he'd noticed the brief falter in her smile. "But I wouldn't trade this for any Weyr." He added, just in case his opinion of his home was in question. He took her hand in his own, which had much different callousing from his own, unique work, and long fingers. "S'kagi, my partner is Coriath. Sorry we haven't met, I've been neck deep in Weyrling lessons and trying to work with my wing. You're a candidate?" He asked. If she wasn't he was going to feel an idiot, though her lack of familiarity made it more likely. "Sorry for the trouble getting around, I'm sure the number of people isn't helping much. How long have you been here?"

She nodded enthusiastically, her eyes narrowing to slits as she smiled her broad, toothy grin. "Yes I am, actually! I've not been here long; not even a sevenday, actually. But it's slowly becoming more familiar. And the number of people don't bother me much. Back home was always crowded too!" Her expression softened somewhat at the mention of home, her eyes becoming wide and almost dreamy- as if recalling a scene that was no longer quite real. Silent for a moment, she shared an abashed look with the Rider as she once again acknowledged his presence. Leaning forward, she brough one hand to her mouth, the other reaching for his shoulder knot, although she did not attempt to touch it. "Oh! Coriath is a bronze? How lucky! I mean..." Aderyn faltered for a moment, drawing back. "I mean of course you two were meant for eachother, but I guess you are lucky not only to have found your other half, but that they should be so strong!" A rather nervous giggle bubbled up from her throat. "You're doubly fortuitous is what I mean to say!" Her shoulders slumped forwards as a deep sigh erupted from her lips, and she looked rather bemused and resigned to her failure to express her sentiments.

"Well out of the two halves, one of us had to be worth a damn so I guess it was him." He joked, winking. "I know what you mean though, yes I do still think I was very lucky." His own expression softened a little more, a little wistful, perhaps even a faint melancholy note, but mostly wistful. "I count my blessings every time I hear him." "I think you're worrying about it too much." He added, indicative of her embarrassment, which was sort of amusingly awkward. "Where are you from?" He asked, honestly curious. "I don't get out for as many search flights as perhaps I should. I'm sure I'm missing out on any number of interesting locations, and word from home." He added, trying to make her more comfortable. "I was Hold born. My mother was a weaver, though it's a damn good thing I impressed because the only thing I could weave was an terribly ugly fishing net."

She laughed, despite her awkwardness. S'kagi was funny, despite his almost fierce appearance. And his wistfulness softened his face into something that was almost tragically beautiful. " I'm from a tiny little cothold beholden to Ista Hold... although I don't even know if its big enough to even be called that! Its just one huge plantation house and all my uncles and aunts and cousins who care for the fruit orchards...but I loved it there. On windy days you could smell the ocean, even if you were knee deep in the marsh, picking plump berries... I miss it, but I admit that the Weyr is lovely too..." "And don't worry about weaving," she teased, "it took me years before I could make anything that wasn't a big ball of knots! But then again, I'm never been to the Weavercraft Hall, so I'm mediocre at best. Perhaps its best not to take my word on it." She made a face, contorting it in bemusement. "What brings you in today? I know if ever I managed to Impress, I don't think I could bear to be away from them for long."

"We're about a days walk from the ocean here, though I'm sure it's much harder to smell for all the greenery outside." He noted, conversationally, relaxing as she laughed. He enjoyed being able to make people do that. There was enough about what he did that was serious, and most of the Weyrlings were more interested in glaring him as though they had come pre-equipped with a guidebook to handling new dragons, straight from the hold. "The rain brought me in, I figured Coriath and I would start growing gills if we were out much longer, and it was getting hard to see." He brushed absently at damp hair again and shook a few droplets of rain water off to the side. "That and this way I can actually enjoy a cup of Klah without him trying to spill it. He's positive I drink far too much of it." He didn't have any now, though he'd been debating it, and instead broke apart the hot roll he'd been juggling with an broad, theatrical shrug as though to say 'What can you do'?

Aderyn scrunched up her face, a caricature of a child offered something she didn't like. "I'm not particularly partial to Klah, but I understand its an acquired appreciation. Coriath must feel the same way, I'm sure!" She toyed with the end of a braid which had drifted over her shoulder, twirling the end around her finger absently. "Can I ask, though, what on earth you two were doing out in the rain today? I didn't think that search flights would be ongoing in such weather. I know it's none of my business, but I can't help but be a little curious. I guess just the prospect of Impressing makes the life of a Rider that much more interesting." Her lips curled slightly as she awaited his answer, leaning on her elbow which was propped upon the gigantic wood block counter top.

"Well it wasn't raining yet when I went out." He admitted. "I was just trying to stay in practice with riding Coriath." Not that there seemed to be much point these days, but then again he also did enjoy just being out in the sky where it wasn't so busy and crowded. "We probably could have just gone between but I suppose I was just looking to burn off some energy, get my thoughts together." "Coriath has some...very definite impressions on Klah, mostly about the smell." He admitted, with a chuckle.

"Ah, I see. That makes much more sense!" Aderyn was all smiles today, bordering on bubbly. It appeared that the Weyr, regardless of whether or not she Impressed, was doing her a world of good. But then again, she had not, as of yet, encountered any major authority figures. Everyone was simply expected to do their job without supervision. That is, everyone except the newly Impressed. "Is it terribly difficult, the beginning? I mean, you must be an expert now, since you're teaching the others, but I suspect that even though you're delighted to find that missing piece, there is so much struggle involved. It must be a little frustrating." And potentially heartbreaking...But this sentiment she kept to herself.

"Well I'm not the master instructor." He offered, with a faint shrug. "It's... it's a lot of work, and for some people it's a huge transition, and so strange since it's a peice of you that you never knew was missing. Gets more complicated when you think about how many people have the potential to impress that don't." He could wax philosophical about that, but really it was probably too early and too boring a topic. "... I was... a bit of a brat about it. I took it as liberation, though Coriath and I clearly worked it out pretty quickly, though if I hadn't been -very- lucky, he could have been left with permanent scaring on his hide from not being properly oiled." He gave her an appologeticly wry smile. It was a mistake that could be uncovered early enough, so he might as well use it as a teaching experience.

A giggle stole past her lips, her eyes closing, almost throwing her head back in delight. "Like a leather saddle for runners! I'm glad he didn't end up with a cracked hide, but it tickles me to think that dragons and runners have something so essential in common. And I'm doubly glad that you've learned from the experience as well... I don't mean to lecture you! Not at all, in any situation, it is you who would be the teacher, but what I mean to say is, simply, I am pleased that everything worked out without anyone getting hurt. " She nodded, hoping for his understanding in her clear inability to express herself without embarrassing herself an equal amount. "And I have no illusions when it comes to my chances for Impressing. There is always hope, but I know that there are so many that are Searched, not because it is best for us, but because it would be the greatest tragedy if a dragon should die for lack of a match."

"Yes sort of." He laughed, though something she'd said brought back that slightly sad look. "Huge, flying runners that can go 'Between'. We were very fortunate though, as impressive as the clutches have been, we've managed to avoid having any hatchings go "Between". Hopefully we'll have a repeat this time... and then with any luck, things will stay calm and safe until such time as the Hatchlings are old enough to learn to go 'Between' themselves." He drew in a thoughtful breath, biting the scar at the corner of his lip again in troubled thought. "Then they'll be in danger again. But that's a while to come, and we'll have time yet. You might even Impress." He added, fishing to see her reaction. Some of the Candidates had facinating views on it, especially now days. "Sometimes I wonder if part of it isn't so much that we aren't complete without a dragon, so much as we might now grow without one. There are those who have the potential to acheive that hidden part of themselves without. Also even if you didn't, the Weyr is very welcoming to those with the potential, especially women I'll admit."
