[Annelie, Yansanth and Okassis]

"Yansanth... Yansanth...".....Yansanth.

Mine! Mine! This way, this way. I saw it go this way!

...What went 'this way'? Annelie allowed her self to slow to a walk, or at least a speedy walk. As she rounded a corner, she saw the gold rump and tail of Yansanth, followed by the candy-green hide of a flit, disappear around the next bend in the maze-like Weyr. She gave a skip and once more threw her question to the little Queen.

WHAT went 'this way'?...

And once more, Yansanth didn't answer. Annelie groaned and kept walking, her arms swinging and swishing at her sides and her feet thudding on the stone ground as she moved. She neared the bend, and readied herself to give a a good talk to Yansanth, but her reprimands flew out of her head when she heard a squawky trumpeting that could only be from Hers.

Annelie broke into a run, skidded around the bend and dashed into the stores before nearly colliding with Yansanth, who was down on her chest with her bottom in the air and her nose between two sacks of whatever. The woman did a twirl and a side-step before finally coming into contact with a wall.

A pan clattered to the floor as she straightened herself, but even that didn't deter Yansanth from rummaging between the two sacks. Even Gnattie, the green flitter, continued to chatter from atop one of two said sacks.

"Yansanth!" The young woman's words were stern, but she refrained from actually yelling; her mental state was enough.

Yansanth quickly withdrew her head from its place near the ground and she turned and looked at Hers, an excited expression written all over her face and body, despite the amount of trouble she was in. ANNELIEEE! We saw it, it went between these things and then... disappeared... Yansanth ended sadly, her wings drooping for a moment.

"What did you see?!"

I dunno... it was long and did this a lot. Yansanth continued to further explain by means of demonstration, in which she flicked her tongue in and out of her muzzle in quick repetition, a perfectly excited expression once more on her face. Gnattie gave a chitter, and a growl, then flashed a picture of a tunnel snake.

Annelie's expression went into terror and she immediately rushed over and stacked more sacks over the area Yansanth was in before the two dragons could tell what was what.

"YANSANTH, you CANNOT chase tunnel snakes..."

But Annelieee.... it was so cute--

"AH-AH, NO."

He might have hoped that he'd earned himself a bit of downtime after a hard day of challenge-making, ingredient-gathering and dimglow-replacing; but arriving many hours late to his kitchen duties, Okassis was quick to find that he'd been mistaken. Very mistaken. Never mind the fact that he'd been all but shoved out of the kitchen on his last attempt to make himself useful. No, they'd been expecting him there, and even if he'd spent his time helping another portion of the Weyr, he was now expected to work right up to the dinner shift - and that lunch he'd missed getting? Yeah, he wouldn't be getting that until he'd earned it.

Which wasn't to say they actually wanted his help in the kitchen - if you could call his bumbling attempts at cooking "help". No, they were shooing him out again. You're a strong boy, he'd been told dryly, so put those muscles to use and get these supplies from the stores!

The fact that he'd left and then been unable to find the stores until asking three separate Candidates for help didn't do much to stop his grumbling, either. Eventually, he got pointed in the right direction - shells, it had been right across the way! - and now observing the huge stacks within the caravan, Okassis couldn't help a low whistle, rubbing at his head and looking at the list in his hand. "This's gonna take a while, ain't it..." he sighed. It wasn't like everything in here was neatly labeled either; no, that would've been too easy....

Then his ears picked up a few sounds. Someone was already in here? Thank the First Egg, maybe they could help him! Walking briskly toward the sound of a scolding voice, Okassis's face lit up with hope as he caught a glimpse of a young woman, hopefully some sort of hand around here that could help. But as he opened his mouth and began to happily call out, "Hello!", he'd walked a little further around a pile of goods interposed between them, and saw what else was there....

Okassis stopped dead in his tracks, staring at the young Queen with open shock. Despite living in the Weyr for well on a week, he'd seen relatively few dragons during his stay - and for a moment, Yansanth's size just baffled him. Too big for a firelizard, too small for a dragon, too pretty for a watchwher - what did that make her?

Gnattie had heard Okassis before he made his appearance, but the other two in the party failed to notice the chattering flit and continued on with their petty argument about how tunnel snakes were cute but how they actually weren't and so on. It wasn't until the green flit gave such a screech did the pair part ways and notice they weren't alone.

Annelie jumped back and stiffened, the pan on the ground giving another clunk as her foot knocked into it. Out of habit, blush rose in her cheeks and she stared wide-eyed with raised eyebrows in a total deer-in-the-headlights stupor.

Yansanth performed a similar action, and gave a squawk before trying to dart in some direction, only to run right into the Whatever sacks and tumble onto her side and roll onto her bottom. She shook her head to shake away the hurt, and then focused her faceted, swirling yellow eyes on the source of the fright.

A person? That... wasn't so scary. The little Queen's eyes steadily began to move to a light green and she looked to Hers. Anneliee... Anneelieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

Yansanth made a whine and moved off her rump, bumping her large head into the legs of her Mine.

This jolted the young woman, who gave a sudden, rapid spasm of blinks as she shook her head for a second. Her chest rose and fell, her fright not yet gone, and she looked down at the little gold before looking back at Okassis. This time actually noticing HIM. ...Not like that helped the matter.

She blushed again. Her mouth opened for a moment, then closed, and she just stared. This caused yansanth to give an audible huff, and she too turned back to look at Okassis.

AND THE SILENCE... it begins.

Catching a glimpse of the Queen's yellow eyes - and knowing full well what that color meant - Okassis had been quick to raise his hands and take a step back, chuckling awkwardly. Even as his brain puzzled together the fact that, yes indeed, he was looking at a proper dragon - if a young one - he was already realizing the worrisome situation he'd walked onto. His head had been filled up with a lot of warning about the female dragons on the Hatching grounds, how they were the most likely to rip up an unfortunate Candidate that was in their way, and he didn't want to find out if they could be equally vicious off the sands.

"Whoa, sorry there! Didn't mean to spook you lot!" he hurried to say, aware that he'd become abruptly the center of attention. Not just the girl and the Gold, either - a little flitt was darting about with those anxious screeches, which just set him less and less at ease.

It occurred to him, somewhere in his mind, that he'd run into someone that by their very nature should outrank him. An Impressed Weyrling certainly had to have more weight than a week-old Candidate, after all! But the Trader in him snorted and waved away the thought that he should run for cover before he risked offense. He was here doing work, after all - he must have as much right as her to be here!

For that matter, what business did a Weyrling have in the Stores?, he wondered. A bit less alarmed, a bit more curious, he gave what he hoped would look like a properly pleasant smile, forcing his shoulders to relax. "Shards, I didn't expect to be running into anyone around down here! You trying to find something?" Okassis asked, hoping that he could gloss over the young woman's obvious embarrassment and unease.

Yansanth cocked her head at Okassis as he smiled, then she looked to Hers and repeated the action, confused as to why Annelie had yet to respond in any way. Mine? ...is something wrong? Are you OK? Mine...? The dragon sat back down on her bottom and raised a foreleg to prod the young woman, but instead brought it down onto Annelie's foot.

While the action didn't contain a lot of force, Yansanth wasn't a feather-weight, and the sudden pressure jolted the poor woman and she hopped back a little to remove her foot. "Oh! Um. ... ah --" Annelie fumbled, her hands wringing themselves together in front of her as her mind buzzed with apologies from the gold dragonet.

OH, MINE, I'm sorry! I meant to prod you, not step on you!

Yansanth's words went unheard, though, as Annelie groped for an actual, intelligible answer to give to the young man. She finally managed one after a few attempts, and got out that "there was a Tunnel Snake... and... those two ran off..." She unlinked her hands and first pointed to the two sacks, then at Yansanth and then at Gnattie. ... which Annelie finally noticed was flapping around and being all sorts of annoying.

"Oh dear, I'm sorry!" she gasped, and took a step forward and started calling the flit's name in a sharp but hushed tone, and at the same time Yansanth jumped to her feet with total, sudden excitement and started looking all around.

Annelie! It went in here! I saw it come in here! Where do you think it went?

Were all Goldriders this flighty? Okassis found himself wondering, trying to follow the girl's mumbled, distracted meaning. She seemed to have her hands quite full, trying to keep up with the dragon and firelizard both. It might not have been too long ago that she'd Impressed, though, for all Okassis knew. He remembered Nan telling him that there'd been a Queen from the last Clutch; maybe Yansanth was the very same?

"Hunting after tunnelsnakes, huh?" Okassis mused, gaining enough courage to walk a bit closer as he could get a better view of the action - though not so close that he might risk upsetting that dragon, there were some things that even his arrogant self wasn't willing to risk!

Something reminded him that he wasn't here to socialize, he was here to work - that fardling woman back in the kitchen wouldn't take too kindly to him if he got sidetracked, no doubt. But at the same time, if they had seen a tunnelsnake, maybe it was a fair diversion - the last thing anyone wanted was pests getting into the stores, right? Especially ones that had nasty bites!

"Well, you're not gonna catch anything making noise like that," the blond said critically, folding his arms in front of him. Talking directly to the queen, he said, "Tunnelsnakes aren't deaf, and they like it better if they're the ones doing the chasing. If you want to get them out, you have to out-sneak them, or out-think them, you see?"

At the advice that Okassis gave, though he might have meant well, made Annelie stop calling for the shrieking flit and bring her hand to her forehead. She slumped her shoulders and gave out a half groan, half sigh.

"I wish you hadn't told her that..."Annelie commented, her hand slipping from her face. She looked down at Yansanth, who, upon hearing Okassis herself, had sidled right up to him and stared up with rapt attention.

"She'll never stop trying to find them now--"

Anneelieeee, ask him how to do that?

I am not going to do that...

Anneeeellliiiiiiiiieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee Yansanth gave an audible whine to go along with the pleading she expressed in Annelie's mind. But the woman was staunch in her decision and just folded her arms, like a mother to her child.

"I said NO, Yansanth..."

The gold visible drooped, attempted to give Hers puppy-eyes... and when that didn't work, she took it upon herself and went up to Okassis and looked up at him with the same doe-eyed expression, her head up and against his leg for a more added, pathetic affect.

Annelie raised an eyebrow and then sighed. When did you become such a beggar? ...And you're usually so shy....

I saw other dragons doing this! Yansanth commented back, quite happy with herself, without even flickering her attention away from Okassis.

Okassis probably should have felt bad, at least a little, for having instigated (or at least, escalated) the poor girl's troubles. Quite on the contrary, though; he smiled at her distress, shaking his head. "You can't begrudge her for wanting to do some good work, can you?" he asked. "Besides, I don't want to be picking up a bag with one of those things on it, and she she's hardly got anything to worry about if they try to bite. So it makes her happy, helps me out... and she's going to be hunting her own wherries someday, so she might as well start learning how!" He was honest about his motivations, at least.

Feeling the young dragon's head knocking against his leg, Okassis nearly recoiled - then, laughing at his own surprise, called to Annelie, "Lookit that enthusiasm!" And who am I, not to fulfill the whims of a Queen?, he thought smugly, hunching down to address the dragonet. "Whaddaya think, pretty girl? You more a sneak-hunter, or a smart-trapper? I can tell you how to do either - or both, I guess, but that'd take longer."

Annelie opened her mouth to comment, but she could find no words to give, and so she let her eyes fall on Yansanth.

The little Queen gave a wiggle when her efforts seemed to be working. She'd be able to collect a whole bunch of cute little tunnel snakes and keep them forever and ever and-- wait... 'hunter'?

Yansanth suddenly hopped back with a whirl of confusion. She looked to Okasis and then over her back to Annelie, who quirked a brow at her.
Anneliee.... he didn't mean actually HUNT them, did he? Oh... say he didn't. I don't want to hurt them! She shook her golden head vigorously, her eyes swirling amidst green and yellow once more.

"She..." Annelie unfolded her arms and scratched the side of her head. "You misunderstood her enthusiasm. ... She doesn't want to hunt tunnel snakes. She wants to keep them ... as pets. She thinks they're cute."

The Queen looked back up at Okassis and nodded, before smiling and exhibiting her "tunnel-snake-tongue-skills."

Oh. Shards. Okassis creased his lips, realizing exactly how far off he'd been from what he'd been guessing. Tunnelsnake... pets were much different than tunnelsnake prey.

"Is that right, is it?" he mused, rubbing at his chin. Trying to wrap his mind around the idea that anyone could think the fardling things were cute was a hopeless venture - obviously, the young gold did, and he doubted she could be persuaded otherwise. But that didn't mean...

He had it. Nodding his head, Okassis said, "Ahh, I see. Well, each to their own - but I don't think you could keep 'em as good pets. Too wild," he told the young queen, "and too easy to spook. They might die of fright." This wasn't necessarily true, mind, but it sounded properly convincing coming from the trader's mouth. "In fact," he went on, "it's probably not so good for them to be around people in the Weyr, either. Somebody else might get the idea to keep them as pets, and then what? Nothing good, that's what. So if you really wanted, you might be able to catch one - just for a bit - to play with... and then you could let it go where it's not bothering nobody, and nobody's bothering it...."

...Shardit, this was not the time to be filling the willful dragonet's head with ideas!

Annelie almost literally smacked her hand onto her forehead as Okassis explained different approaches to interacting with tunnel snakes. It had become increasingly harder to keep an eye on the now ever-wandering dragon, and now it would probably become impossible.

Sensing some distress from the woman, Gnattie finally ceased her squawking and alighted on Anne's shoulder. The little green flit folded her wings and stopped her 'talking,' but continued to watch Okassis with an unwavering glare. She did, however, give a mutter of a hum when Annelie absentmindedly reached up and patted the flit's neck with a finger.

"Must you continue telling her about those thi--"

Annelieeee, shhhh! I want to know about keeping theeem! Yansanth interrupted. She had turned to look over her shoulder at her Mine, but was now looking back at Okassis. She nodded to show her understanding, and fluttered her wings in excitement of the prospect of at capture-but-not-hunting.

Tell him to get on with showing me!

"No," came Annelie's flat out response. "Yan, I don't want you playing with tunnel snakes. You could get hurt..."
PostPosted: Fri Apr 17, 2009 1:45 pm

"The trick is," Okassis went on, willfully deaf to the rider's objections (oh, he'd pay for it later, and he knew he would - but there were some moments where you just had to barrel ahead with a regretful course anyway, and pay your dues when the time came!), "tunnelsnakes aren't too different from dragons, or any other folks, in some ways. They just want a couple things. Most of the reason people think they're pests, for example, is because they keep digging into food stores like this. So that's where being a little smarter comes in. Get something they like to eat, and you can set them up so you can catch them - say, in a box...."

He was grinning widely now. It was impossible not to; even if he wasn't making trouble, the little Queen was so intent, how anyone couldn't be absolutely delighted was beyond him! (Other than Annelie. If it were his dragon, he might be slapping his forehead as well.) With some diplomatic consideration, Okassis concluded: "Then you can keep them for a while, and let them go later. Who knows; they might decide they like you, and come back! That's how you know that you've really made a friend, y'know, after all; you have to let them choose."

Yansanth turned to Annelie with such excitement that her whole body seemed to be vibrating, a happy hum sounding from her throat. Oh Annelie, did you hear that?! Do we have a box? Can we get some food? What do tunnel snakes eat? This'll be so fun, and Gnattie could have a little friend to play with, and and and... OH, A BOX!

The little Queen just couldn't contain herself. She gave an off-key trumpet and bounded over to a rack in the stores where a could boxes sat on the floor. Her wings gave a flutter and she nosed the crates, tail swishing.

Annelie, on the other hand, couldn't be more annoyed. She folded her arms tightly over her chest and gave quite a glare at Okassis. The young woman wasn't an aggressive type of person, but she didn't hesitate in physically expressing her concern and given moods. And so sharp was her mental state that Yansanth couldn't help but notice it.

Mine, is something wrong? Are you mad? Did I make you mad -- oh, I'm sorry! The dragonet lowered her tail and stopped nosing the boxes, a sad little mewl escaping her.

"No. Tunnel. Snakes. As. Pets. THAT'S IT. NONE."
PostPosted: Fri Apr 17, 2009 7:38 pm

Well, now Okassis didn't feel so great about his decision to encourage the young Queen. It had been well and great when it seemed like her rider wasn't really adamant one way or another - uncomfortable, maybe - but now she just seemed sharp and annoyed, and the way that the gold was whimpering under that gaze....

"Ah, think you'd better listen to her on this one," he said as a by to the young dragon, smiling sheepishly. There was a time to recognize when he'd been beat, and this was certainly it. Even though there was that annoyingly incessant voice trying to tell him he could push it just a bit further... well, it just wouldn't be polite to do that to someone he hadn't even introduced himself to yet! Otherwise, how would they know what name to scream curses at?

Trying to push back his more wicked side, he nodded to the young girl. "Erm, sorry if I was a bit unhelpful... might've gotten carried away. Name's Okassis, by the way - yours?"

Yansanth gave one last whimper and trudged, all dejected-like, to Annelie's side, where she then proceeded to angle her head up and rest it on the woman's leg, just as she had done with Okassis... minus the doe-eyed stare.

Oh Mine, I'm sorry...

It's... alright, Yansanth. I just wish you would listen more when we're on these subjects about questionable... pets... Annelie looked down at the dragonet and gave a few scratches to the eye-ridges of the now bobbing head.

After a merrr escaped the gold, Annelie stopped, and turned her attention back to the Instigator. However, in doing that, she also realized that now the attention was back on her... and that caused some jitters and nervousness to reemerge.

" ...An-Annelie," she replied, her voice holding less of it's previous sternness and annoyed tones. She still kept a solid face, but it was a bit obvious now that she didn't feel as forceful.
