He sat there, on the stump in the open clearing, just waiting. In his hand was a small knife, which was stained slightly with blood. Hanging from his belt were his two flutes, one a golden color and one a shade of black. From a string tied around his neck was his precious dragon stone. He has all his usual equipment.

He looked relatively normal, too, except for two things: his scarf and his eyes. The yellow scarf around his neck was at least a foot shorter and the edges were frayed, showing that he had used it as a rope and as a bandage (around his arm was some of the scarf, stained red from blood). His eyes were cold, not showing any sign that he used to be a happy and childish bard.

Nils stared ahead, waiting for a certain someone with his squirrel to arrive...

A rustle came from the bushes, and a moment later a certain bishop stepped into the clearing, pausing for a moment to allow his eyes to adjust to the light; the woods had been rather dark. He glanced down at the squirrel for a moment, then aimed a kick at it. That little creature had been extremely annoying.

Then, once he was ready, his gaze rose to meet that of the bard in front of him. "... So, you've been completely corrupted?" he asked casually, not really wanting an answer. And so he continued. "That's a shame. I would have preferred not to hurt you too badly; that body belongs to a friend." His eyes flicked over the bard, eying the items he held. Well, he'd probably made a mistake. In this case, Aureole would have been a better choice; but it was a bit late for that now. He would have to make do with the tome he held.

Renault paused for a moment, then spread his arms. "So. Since you are the one who challenged me, I'll give you the first move. But don't underestimate me. Unlike Amelia with Rei, I won't go easy on you simply because you look like a friend. The one controlling that body is not Nils."

Daniel Tuck was hit by the bishop's kick. It let out a small squeak and looked back at Renault coldly before scurrying over to Nils, climbing up his arm and perching on his shoulder.

Nils blinked, just staring blankly at Renault for a minute, before beginning to laugh. His head tilted up to the sky as he was laughing, and then it fell forward, his teal hair shielding his eyes. "Oh! Don't worry, Father." He spat out venomously. "I don't plan to."

He stood up, brushing off the bark and whatever else from his shorts. Casually, he picked the ebony flute off of his belt and began to play it, for the song that would control. Although he didn't expect or plan for the flute to be able to control his opponent, maybe he could wear down the tome a bit first...
Squirrels, small birds, and insects suddenly appeared, all staring blankly at Renault.

Nils smirked and played his flute again, sending a swarm of animals to distract, irritate, and attack Renault. He might as well test the water first before getting in too deep, right? He chuckled. "Come on! Show me your power..." His arm extended out to Renault, his palm wide open. His hand squeezed tightly into a fist. "So I can crush it."

The sound of the flute echoed, but this time Renault was ready for it. With a concentrated effort of will, he brought to mind a separate song, one that it was said Saint Elimine had once sung. And, it seemed to work; though the cursed flute still sounded, it did not have the same effect, being muted by the remembrance of a holy tune. So, that problem was solved.

And now, there was another one; these small creatures. It wasn't right to bring such innocent beings into this, either; but he couldn't help that now. He was actually glad that nothing more dangerous than this was around; a wolf or a bear might have posed some sort of a threat, though they would likely be harder to control as well. But there was only these small things.

"... My power? Then... here it is." The bishop's voice was quiet, but firm. The light in the clearing suddenly seemed to grow brighter, as if something within glowed with its own radiance. Strange words rolled off the bishop's tongue, an ancient prayer invoking the power of the Saint to assist the spellcaster. "Sanali vea reashi..." With a gentle roar, a wave of light rushed through the clearing, the force behind it felt clearly. Renault stood out in sharp relief for a moment, then the light died and the bishop stood alone again. "That isn't all you have, is it? I'm afraid this will be over quite soon if it's that easy." For the animals seemed to be moving away, the pure light having broken the spell of the curse.

(( Sorry for taking so loooooong. Dx ))

The bard smirked, his golden flute now in his hand instead of the black one. ... Well, in his left hand, his not-dominant hand. In his other hand was the knife. "Well, I'm glad you weren't stopped by that! I would have been... rather disappointed if you were."

Nils' face turned to a wide grin as he ran towards Renault. If there was one thing that the bard had a lot of, it was speed. Although rather small for his age (since technically he's over a thousand years old), he was still rather quick and agile. This was one of his few advantages over Renault; the other two hung around his neck and was hiding in the trees.

He brought his left arm up to his face and then swung hard, aiming to crash it against the side of Renault's head. The knife was then brought up to slice from Renault's side to his shoulder, hopefully injuring the bishop more, and then finishing with a flute strike to the face, hoping to smash his opponent's nose with the metal instrument.

"Something like that is hardly going to stop me," the bishop returned, position dropping a bit into one more ready to counter. "I've had quite a bit more experience than you, and you aren't that much older than me... don't forget that your father was the one who kept me alive for so long." He'd told the group he had been a mercenary before, but until now he hadn't really said anything but that. Normally, he would be completely unprepared for anything physical; after all, he'd been a bishop for nearly twenty years now.

But, one thing had changed that; the morph incident at Halloween. He'd lost control, a bit, and Stefan had provided him a bit of a refresher in swordsmanship. Granted, he was still horribly out of practice, but his instincts had returned to him, just a little. So, a flute? That was... honestly something Renault had never thought he'd be attacked with. It wasn't too threatening, but head wounds always hurt. So instead, Luce came up, taking the blow with no real effect; it was a rather thick tome. This caused the knife to get through... but the angle was all wrong, it would have been better to just stab him. Renault's layered robes padded the blow, reducing it to just a slash instead of an actual cut.

With a quick motion, the bishop's left hand flashed up, grabbing Nils' wrist as he finished the cut. Renault gave the boy a slight grin before pulling his arm in the same direction he'd been going, which would cause him to spin and the flute to be aimed completely wrong. Then one booted foot came up in a kick towards Nils, now turned away. Nothing lethal or even really damaging, but it was a bit humiliating. "You'll have to do a little better than that, child."

Nils knew a bit about Renault already. He knew that the bishop had previously been a mercenary, but that was about it. But still, he thought he could have some edge on him, assuming that a good amount of time had passed between being a mercenary and a bishop. Surely he'd be out of practice enough for him to get some damage in.

... Boy, was he wrong.

Nils growled, stumbling forward from the kick and nearly falling to his knees. Daniel Tuck, startled, darted up into the nearest tree. So much for that... He thought bitterly. The attempt to startle Renault, even just a bit? Yeah. Right. It failed miserably, and left the bard looking like a complete fool. He was feeling rather irritated and embarrassed now, but he forced those emotions aside. Getting too wrapped up in feelings could mean failure or death.

I'm just not used to battle. He thought angrily, waiting for Renault's next move. He wasn't going to use the dragon stone yet, and trying another attack would just leave him with even more humiliation. No, the best move for Nils (in his mind, having lost some of his confidence) was to just be patient and wait for some kind of opening.

He hoped he'd have a chance.

Renault shrugged, then waved a hand in the air dismissively. "Hmm, well, I suppose I can't expect any better," he said loftily. "After all, you're just a child, no matter how many years you've lived. And a corrupted creature like you is surely bereft of the blessings of the Goddess. You can't win. I'll defeat you and bring you back by force." He took a step forward, closer but not so close that Nils could grab him. "I'm sorry, Nils," he said, addressing the bard himself. "We'll find some way to help you."

The tome in Renault's hand flipped back open, almost of its own accord, and the bishop canted the words to a similar but different spell. "Semi vaseru vu hasi..." The light brightened again, and light flowed into the ground under Nils, after a moment forming a concussive blast. Just as the last attack, this was not nearly lethal, simply something to shake and damage his opponent. Renault, though he'd said he wouldn't, was still holding back.

Nils' anger kept rising, despite his constant thoughts telling him to calm down. Then again, there was a limit of how many taunts a person could take before they snapped, and Renault had hit Nils'. "Shut up!!" He shouted, hand switching his grip on the knife. "Don't you mock me!!"
What's... going on?

He hesitated for a moment, which allowed Renault to move towards him and release his spell. The bard noticed a moment too late that the light was charging under him and it fired, hitting his leg hard. He gritted his teeth, suddenly thankful for a high resistance. But even with that high resistance, the attack still hurt. "D-Damn it..." He muttered under his breath softly. His leg began to bleed slightly, his blood running down his leg and soaking into his sock.
Ow!! ... R-Renault?! W-what am I doing?!

Gripping the knife and flute tightly, he went in for another attack, hoping to stab Renault in the ribs (although he would have been happy with any place as long as it hurt the bishop), then bringing his flute up for another head shot.
W-why am I fighting? I don't want to fight! Stop!!

Nils' head began to throb.

There. That had been just what he had been waiting for. Nils, or at least his dark side, had lost control, and a fighter who lost control would have no chance at winning against a collected opponent. Now, it would only be a few more moves until checkmate. His lips began to move again in the words of the first spell.

And here came the attack. Now, the obvious thought would be to dodge; but there was a better choice here. Instead, Renault waited, without moving; the bard rushed at him, thrusting the knife forward. The slim blade easy pierced between the bishop's ribs, causing a shard pain in his side...

But then Renault's hand flashed forward, grabbing Nils' wrist. And there was his checkmate. The knife was the main danger right now, and that had just been neutralized; and with both hands full Nils couldn't use the dragonstone. With a single sharp word, another wave of light rushed forward, in an attempt to purify Nils some. Then the tome dropped to the ground as Renault instead just grabbed his staff, bringing the wooden end around to crack down onto Nils' head. Hopefully the bard wouldn't manage to move in time and make Renault hit his shoulder.

Rei sat in a faroff tree, watching the battle unfold below. Held steady by a tentacle, Rei lightly swayed back and forth on a branch, smiling at the bard's newfound tenacity. Didn't think the kid had it in him... Pulling out the Erebus tome, Rei laid it gently on his lap, should he need it for something.

The explosion of light in the ground made the Druid wince, turning his head at its brilliance. Huh. Kid might be in too deep...

But, looking at the predicament Nils was thrust into, Rei became worried. "Ah, I knew he couldn't handle himself... But should I leave him to rot, or save his hide...?"

He honestly didn't expect to actually be able to stab Renault in the ribs. Nils smirked, enjoying his little victory.
... But that really didn't last long as his wrist was grabbed tightly by the bishop, not allowing him to pull away.

... Stop it!!

He gritted his teeth, his head beginning to throb irritatingly again, the pain more intense this time. Damn it! He thrashed around and took the blow to the shoulder, if only barely. Nils had managed to avoid defeat for now.
No!!

He knew, however, that if he stuck around longer, he would lose. His eyes drifted up to the trees, where he knew Rei was. Then, he cleared his throat, and said one simple word: "now".
Stop it!!

Rei smirked, leaping down from the branches. As he landed at the edge of the clearing, he cast another spell from the tome, sending a new volley of shrieking tendrils shooting from the ground, their placement putting a small distance between the combatants, at least removing Renault's grasp.

As the Druid strolled into the clearing, he removed a Heal Staff, using it on the bard. "Couldn't take the heat, huh, kid?" Summoning another tendril from the ground, Rei wrapped this one around his right arm, giving himself a 'melee' weapon in the form of its barbed edges. "I figured you couldn't do it. I mean, he is a Saint, after all. Shoulda gone with Rhys, if you ask me..."

Looking at Renault, the boy started laughing. "Y'know, it's looking like you're outnumbered, old man. You can't do anything. So just sit down, drop your weapons, and we can kill you quickly." As Rei finished talking, the tendril separating the fighters had begun to slowly grow barbs, like branches on a tree.

Nils gritted his teeth, staggering away from Renault. His right hand was pressed against his forehead, gripping his hair tightly. "S-shut up... Voice..." He hissed. Still, he was thankful to be alive still, and would suck up to the druid for now. In his mind, they were now even, now that his physical wounds were healed.

But still... Renault's words had found a way into his mind. I... am not a child. Not anymore. His eyes were set on the barbed tendrils that Rei had summoned to save his a**. On the other side was Renault, with a rather painful knife in his ribs.

Although he didn't beat him, he got a pretty good blow on him (even though it was a set-up). For the moment, he was satisfied. "Yeah, yeah, yeah, Rei... I chose a bad opponent, I know." He said irritatedly, finally addressing Rei in a normal kind of voice. "We can talk about it later."

... ... Hikaru... Where are you...?

The mental voice faded to silence as he turned and began to walk away, still wary of his surroundings.
