Okassis was never one to back down from competition; doubly so when he didn't have enough to keep him busy otherwise, especially when he'd taken the pains of initiating it, and particularly if his nerves were rattling like crazy with pre-Hatching jitters. And the fact that Sovann was in it all the way with him? His determination was through the roof on this one. There was nothing that could make him back down from his plans. Which was probably good, because it would take a hell of a lot of work in order to see this through the way it needed to go. After a hasty breakfast with Sovann, he'd run back to his alcove in order to grab up a few supplies, and arranged to meet his friend again outside near the herdbeast corral, which Okassis had reasoned to be as good a place as any to begin their quest for ingredients. A pair of small sacks in hand, Okassis hurried to the designated meeting spot, searching around for his friend. He couldn't have beat Sovann here, could he have?

"Why Kas, were you missing me? You've got such a long face," Sovann teased, sneaking up behind Okassis to tweak a lock of his hair. He withdrew his hand and folded his arms over his chest, a wicked grin spreading from ear to ear. "Oh, we're going to be roasted for this." Which was just as well. Sovann was not going to be at all bored after the Weyr discovered their ridiculous antics. Of course, the idea that they might be kicked out loomed over his head, but he hoped that they would just be given a lot of chores to do. He could definitely use something to do with his idle hands. It looked like Okassis had come prepared. Good. They could start their hunt.

"Roasted and hung out for Thread," he agreed with a grin, tossing the other boy a sack. "But hey, it's better than twiddling our thumbs until Hatching, right?" It was no contest for Okassis; if he had to sit, the tension would make his head explode within seconds.
Already starting to move forward, he called back, "C'mon, we've got a lot of bugs to catch!", before hauling himself over the fence of the corral. He hadn't worked out quite yet what the best way to collect their unfortunate prisoners was going to be, but Sovann had a good head - and besides, as a fisherman, he must know something about rustling up insects for bait, right?

It was true that Sovann knew a few tricks, and also true that he could cook up more methods if he thought it over. "So, what kind of bugs are we trying to catch? Grubs'll be under rocks, sure as shells." Hmmm... and you could find trundlebugs along the water line, or near lakes, couldn't you? They would manage. "For trundlebugs, we're going to want to find a lot of dirt or sand, I think," he mused. He caught the sack and ambled off after Okassis, grinning like a young fiend. "Yeah, it's better'n twiddling our thumbs, for sure. Hope they don't kick us out before the Hatching, though." He watched his chance at a dragonet, the same as anyone else.

"Oh, don't give me that crackdust. It's just some harmless fun, right?" Okassis answered with a careless wave of his hand. "Everyone gets a round of free klah on us! They'll have something to talk about for a good week, or at least until the eggs split. We're gonna be fardling heroes for this, Sovann. nobody'll thank us, sure," he shrugged, "but at least we're giving them somethin' better to think about then their nerves. You see? Public service!"
"I'm thinking the trundlebugs'll be better, in any case. There's gotta be a water sources for the herdbeasts around here, and there's probably some good sand around that, right?"

"Ha! Heroes? Maybe, for taking on the chores we're sure to get for our punishment, if the Candidatemaster's a light hand with us. But it's all in good fun." Sovann scratched his chin, thinking. "Yeah, I reckon we'll find some trundlebugs around here, and if not, there's bound to be some where the dragons bathe. ... Say, I'll bet the firelizards hunt them! Shells, if only we had a flitt or two." That would've been grand. It didn't matter, though... they could still be on the look out for hunting flitts. "Let's find the water, and I'm sure we'll find the trundlebugs with it." The poor little beasties were going to be sacrificed to the grand experiment that was the 'extra kick Klah'. They had to get it done, though. Everything was riding on that.

"Hah! You think the Candidatemaster's really gonna hear about this?" Okassis chuckled, then paused thoughtfully. "Well, I guess there's a chance, anyway... but I bet I can smooth-talk us out of trouble. I mean, who's to say we aren't perfectly sincere, anyway?"
There was a distinctive silence following Sovann's mention of flitts - rather odd, actually, given how Okassis had always admired the tiny dragons - but it didn't seem to much matter. "Water, right!" Surveying the area, Okassis pointed off toward a mound of earth not so far away. "C'mon, let's go over there. We'll be able to get a good look of the place on top of that little knobb."

That was... odd. Okassis had always liked flitts, and had been just as inclined to babble about them as Sovann himself before. "What gives, Okassis? Don't you usually have some wild story to tell me about firelizards?" Sovann didn't pause, though, heading toward the mound of earth that his friend had indicated. He glanced around himself, looking for something in particular-- Ah, there it was. He grabbed up a twig, one that would be long enough to poke into that mound a little. For some reason, bugs tended to climb onto sticks. He couldn't quite figure out what made them do that, but it was useful at times like this. "I sure hope you can smooth-talk us out of trouble." It'd be awful if they did miss out because of their contest. If they couldn't find trundlebugs near the water, they might have a shot at finding them at the mound, so it was just as well to be prepared for both.

The blonde's mouth quirked, his eyebrows sloped; for a moment there, Sovann might have seen something like guilt on his face, or shame. But it was gone in a flash, and Okassis laughed roughly. "Always, of course! Did I tell you about the little brown scamp I spotted when we were selling in Nabol Hold last Turn? Funny little thing was flitting around the crowds with a note folded up around its neck, just begging for attention. I spent ages watching it, trying to figure it out, but it never came anywhere near me. Then I saw a passerby stop to pay it attention, and it crooned all cute-like while they bent over and took off the note- then in a flash it was gone, and the man started shrieking like a wherry! Turns out the thing had snatched his mark pouch and fled. The note read - 'Thanks for your help, now I can get some brighter glows!' Can you believe it?"
Climbing up onto the mound (and skirting around a particularly hairy herdbeast that was already on the slope), Okassis began searching around for water. He wasn't disappointed - pointing toward the distance, he asked, "You see that pond over there? Would that be good?"

No, Sovann couldn't believe it. Obviously, though, Okassis didn't intend to tell him the truth. He shrugged it off, managing a grin (though it was a somewhat strained one now). "That's quite a story... and oh, hey! Pond. Yes, the pond'll be great." He was sure they'd find trundlebugs there. "Everything likes water, even bugs," he blathered, aware that that was absolutely obvious, but not at all sure what else to say now that they'd managed to find an awkward moment. He'd caught that look of guilt... or was it shame? It made him feel kind of bad for having said anything. Oh well. Actually shrugging now, he led the way toward the pond, hoping that some day Kas would tell him the actual truth. His blond friend tended to make up stories instead, of distract him with actual stories, and he didn't think it helped Okassis to do that.

"Makes good sense to me," Okassis agreed, following his friend toward the water. Even if he wasn't certain that Sovann had believed his story, it had done its job - the subject had passed, and he'd skirted an uncomfortable topic of conversation. Knowing Sovann, it would come up again eventually... but maybe at a more opportune time, he'd be ready to talk. Either that, or Sovann would be hearing a lot more stories about imaginary flitts Okassis pretended to have seen.
Arriving at the shore of the pond, Okassis studied the ground. "So now, do we just start digging here?" he asked, looking to his friend for guidance.

"Well, yeah, we can just start digging." Sovann prodded the stick into the ground, and waited. The stick still had a bit of sap on it, and it was possible that the trundlebugs would go for that, or else move about because their little burrows were disturbed. Patience was key here, and it was a fardling good thing that he had developed some patience, because otherwise he would've been in a fix. It used to be that he couldn't sit still for anything, but now he could at least manage short periods of it. Watching closely, he waited for a long moment, and then he snapped up a trundlebug, and put it in his sack. "See? That's how you do it." He prodded at the earth again, shifting it over. Hmmm... how many were they going to manage to catch, he wondered.

Observing the seahold boy at work, Okassis absorbed the gist of the technique, then immediately set about searching for a stick. He found a shortish one in the cropped grass near the pond's shore; a herdbeast eyed him balefully as he took it up, but seemed disinterested. Digging a small hole in the ground, he poked his stick in, and waited.
After a few seconds, he saw a bug making for the stick. The moment it was on, he flicked the stick up - and succeeded in sending the poor bug flying a foot away. "Whoops!" Okassis exclaimed, lunging forward to recapture the bug before it could gather its dazzled wits and disappear under the ground. Just barely, he snagged it by a leg and stuffed it into the bag. "Well, that's two down! Probably only a couple hundred more to go," he sniggered, replacing his stick in the ground. Hey, nobody said it would be easy - but at least there was good company?

"I hope you realize that we're going to be here for candlemarks," Sovann said with a snicker. It took awhile to catch hundreds of bugs, after all. He rustled up his next catch with relative ease, though getting it into the bag proved to be somewhat more difficult. Juggling the stick and the bag was tricky, and he managed it with only a hint of clumsiness. The next catch was even more ridiculous, and Sovann swore up a storm trying to chase the little bug. Finally, he pinned it... and winced, realizing that he'd killed the thing. "... Hey Okassis? The bugs don't have to be alive before we get their legs, right?" he asked, holding the dead trundlebug up.

"Well, I said that we needed to do some catching up, and this is the best chance for it, isn't it?" Okassis answered off-handedly, scooping, and losing, a particularly lively trundlebug. While he was still trying to recover the loss, he heard the faint crunch of the bug under Sovann's hand, and laughed as he saw his friend's pitifully hopeful gesture. "Still crunchy either way, I think!" Okassis approved the carcass cheerfully, snagging up a living specimen of his own and stashing it away.
