A Midnight Nightmare Captain

Victoria paced the long hall outside one of her mother's rooms. The child labor had lasted much longer this time than it had any time before. She looked around at her family. Her elder brother, Vincent, leaned against the wall, worry written on his perfect features. Next to Vincent was her stepsister Athalie. The youngest in the family before that day was her half brother Dexter, who was playing idly on the floor. The twins, Nathanial and Lucille sat together against the wall opposite Vincent. Neither one of them uttered a word as their stepmother's cries of pain filtered through the wall. Victoria scooped up young Cordelia as she began to cry. "It's all right." she assured the girl. She rocked her back and forth until the only sound that could be heard was a baby crying in the next room. It seemed like forever before her stepfather walked through the door holding a small bundle. Victoria took the child noticing a grim expression on the kings face. "Her name is Susannah." he said, looking at his eldest daughter. Victoria looked up first at her stepfather and then over to Vincent. The silent exchange between them went unnoticed by the rest of the family. Victoria nodded as she fought back the tears. She was thankful when Vincent stepped in. "Come." Vincent said to his siblings. "We must take Susannah to the nursery." He stopped in front of Victoria as the rest of the children filed out. Taking Susannah from Victoria, he quickly left the room. He was surprised at his ability to repress his own grief. Here wasn't the best place to tell the family their mother had died during child birth. The others gone, Victoria looked up at her stepfather. "Can I see her?" she asked him. Jamison looked at her sadly, his own grief worn on his sleeve. "Briefly." he said to her, taking her hand. "I've sent for someone to prepare her for the funeral services." He led her to the door but didn't enter with her. "I must tell the others. I can't leave Vincent to do it alone." he explained. Not only did he not want to return to the room in which he lost his wife ever again, he'd never live down the guilt if Vincent were to tell the others. Victoria merely nodded as she entered the room and visited her barely dead mother. "Mama." she cried before the tears burst from her and she threw herself next to the birthing bed.
Meanwhile, Vincent had led the clan through the castle to the very other end where the nursery was. Placing the new born infant gently in the crib that not long ago belonged to Dexter, Vincent turned to tell them of the tragedy. He had no idea where to start and was thankful to see his stepfather enter the room.
"Come my children." Jamison said to them as he took a seat in the only chair in the room. The children gathered around him on the floor as they had many times since becoming a family. Vincent stayed by the crib, watching over his precious sister. "I have grave news today." Jamison said to them. "In light of our gift of baby Susannah I'm afraid your mother has passed on." He waited as his words sank into the older children. Cordelia and Dexter seemed undeterred by his words. With their young ages he hadn't expected much of a response.
Athalie rose and left the room full of shock. She wondered aimlessly about the castle, not caring for where she went. It was true that she hadn't a close relationship with her stepmother, but she never would have wished any harm to her. The tears that feel from her eyes surprised her as she gave into the sobs she was trying to fight.
Nathanial held his twin as she began to cry for the mother they'd never see again, his own tears held off for later when no one was around. Cordelia and Dexter looked around in wonderment, not understanding what was going on. Jamison stood up wanting to escape into his own grief. He left the children to the nanny and let them deal with it in their own ways.
Grief had stricken the royal family with the birth of the youngest princess. Sadly, it would be less than a year before King Jamison followed Queen Susannah to the afterlife. Vincent would take over as king at the young age of 20 while trying to be the solid front for his family. Victoria moved through her grief taking care of her siblings while Athalie grew more reserved everyday. Nathanial and Lucille got through their grief quickly and returned to being the children they were.
Five years later.....

Vincent rose as he did every morning. He dressed and ate quickly before addressing all that being kind entailed. His morning would be speant listening to the problems the commoners in his court were currently facing and fixing them if he could. Over the last five years of being king, he'd gained their respect and had learned of ways to fix their problems, through trial and error of course. Today was unlike any day in the past. He stopped to see the eldest sister to ensure she was up for the children. He rapped loudly on her bedroom door.

Lucille watched the early morning sun rise from her favorite spot in the garden. She had fond memories of watching is rise with her mother here in this exact place. She smiled happily as the day began. Perhaps today she'd get up the strength to tell her twin to give her some space. Parties would become more frequent and this year, she wished to dance with a prince besides her twin brother.

Victoria woke up to the sound of the knock. She sat up and looked at the door while rubbing one eye. "Who is it?" She asked wearily. She felt that today was unlike the others, she slept more than usual and quite tired as well. She had a feeling it was the king but decided to ask anyway. When she finally remembered the date, she figured she would just gaze at her younger siblings for it wasn't that special of a day, she hoped.

Hearing his sister's reply, Vincent opened the door. "Time to rise." he said, surprised she was even still in bed. "The first ball is this evening. There is much we have to do." Vincent smiled gently at her. "Most of the preparations are being attended to by the staff. However, Suzanna is probably going to object to not being allowed. She's too young yet."

"Oh! Is it really today?" She sat up and cleared the uncomfortable lint from her eye. "I'm guessing that I will have to talk to Suzanna then?" She asked with a smile.

Nathanial was already up and riding about the lands. He loved the morning air almost as he loved his twin. He headed back, knowing she'd be up soon. He needed to be there for her, to protect her and help her with everything you do.
