"So then I was like 'well what were you doing coming out of that room with him' and he was all like 'it's none of your business' but then I was like 'yeah, well, I have to clean it so it totally is my business and then he got all red-faced and ran away!"
Nandeli was sitting at her usual spot at the head of the circle of stools, cutting and peeling tubers with several of the kitchen girls and some candidates who had been roped in. Unlike most Holdbred candidates unfamiliar with the ins and outs of the kitchen, to the young woman it was practically like her home within a home. For as long as she could remember she'd been here, listening to the women exchange gossip. She had been overjoyed when she was allowed to actually join in with the discussions, and now that she was practically leading it she couldn't have been happier. The Nose was in her element and she loved it.
"He totally was doing something in there with someone. I bet it was Marko, you know that Journeyman Harper that just got in. Have you seen the guy? I mean come on. Unless any of you have heard about a girl on the loose who's seducing the pretty boys?" She looked up at her audience for suggestions.

Today, Okassis was feeling decidedly lump-ish. It was strange for him to feel his feet drag. He was one of those sorts that attacked life with as much energy as he could muster. Maybe it was reality catching up with him; he'd been thinking an awful lot about his family recently, and the more he thought about it, the more that the separation was difficult to cope with. His injuries weren't doing a lot to make him feel better, either, - a fading bruise on his cheek, a stitched gash on his forearm, a slight limp that he took care to downplay - and he was getting tired of explaining them away. At the very least, though, he'd gotten a decree of improving health during his visit to the Healers' earlier that morning. This meant two things to him: First, that he'd be able to attend the Hatching, more likely than not; and second, that he was responsible to pitch in around the Weyr. Okassis had left, invigorated by possibilities and eager to put himself to use. The Healer he'd spoken to had suggested light work in the kitchen; by the time he got to the workstation that morning, however, it seemed like everything was well underway. Things were busy and fast-paced where the cooking was happening, and even wanting as much as he did to make himself useful, his sluggish self was soon pointed away from the hustle, told to "get in someone else's way". Somewhat disheartened by his inability to keep up, he headed in the direction he'd been told. Putting some room between himself and where there was a constant stream of work to provide breakfast for the many many occupants of the Weyr, however, his eye caught on a circle of tuber-peelers in the corner. Room for him there, perhaps? Straightening back his shoulders, he made his approach. Edging into the circle by laying his hand on the shoulder of a particularly talkative member of the group (a young woman about his age, with black ringleted hair), Okassis smiled in as charming a manner as he could and shmoozed, "Sorry to cut in, but could you lot use an extra pair of hands here?"

"There's always that one girl… er, what's 'er name? Aw, shards if I know, but if it was a girl it would be her for sure," suggested one of the older girls as she cut neatly through the skin on the tuber in her hand.
Nandeli nodded at the suggestion, not knowing the girl her companion was talking about but glad to have some input. Besides, if one of them knew about a girl who was free with her body (not the first by a long stretch) then she would surely find such a person. That, or just assign that label to someone who displayed the correct tendencies. Sometimes concrete evidence was hard to find when it came to women of the Weyr. They could be so much sneakier than their male counterparts.
She was pulled away from her discussion group when someone cast a shadow over them. Several of the kitchen girls looked up as well, and a couple of the others leaned in to whisper to each other about the bruise on his face. Nan, however, took charge and fixed Okassis with one of her biggest smiles. "Certainly! Pull up a stool and come and join us! You're handy with a knife right? Don't want to have to send anyone to the Healer's today if we can help it. Kan, move over a smidgen will you? Gotta make room for the new boy!"
The girl sitting next to her shuffled over, leaving a space for Okassis and his stool. Short knives were on the table behind the group, tucked safely in bits of leather so that they didn't nick anyone by accident. Once Okassis was settled, Nandeli pounced. "Sooo… care to tell us anything about yourself, O-mysterious-man? And you wouldn't happen to know about this incident in the Lower Caverns, would you? We're on the look out for any free-bodied male or female who could be dirtying up the spare storage rooms."

"Not planning on losing any fingers today, if that's what you mean," Okassis answered her, plucking up a knife and dragging over a stool. The blond youth plopped himself down beside Nandeli, failing to anticipate in the least what he was setting himself up for.
He'd barely gotten the knife unwrapped when she began her questions. His eyes widened, blinked; "Oh, boy. This's the ladies' gossip corner, is it?" Okassis exclaimed. By the judging looks he'd already gotten from several girls in the group, he had to guess that he was right - a boy who spent too much time around this lot would probably get a reputation to regret!
Even so, he smiled and started stripping the skin off of his first tuber, working with methodical thoroughness as he attempted to get the entire peel in one strip. "Can't say that I know so much about any shady business going on anywhere," he began, his gaze locked onto his handiwork the whole while, "but I'm guessing it'll just be a matter of time to find out. And to myself-" the peel broke after just a few inches, and he frowned before discarding it and continuing his work. "My name's Okassis. And I'm not that mysterious, really; grew up with Traders, wound up here. You've probably heard a hundred more interesting stories than that." He sounded modest enough, but there was something about the way he was grinning, his eyes crinkled, that made it ring false.

Nandeli rolled her eyes. "Of course not! You are sitting in the gossip central of the whole Weyr, I'll have you know. You're currently privy to the most current gossip! It's quite at bit more than only the ladies' gossip corner." Indeed, this was where it all started. At the very least, all big rumours came out of this corner in the kitchen, spread from word of mouth to the other members of the Lower Caverns staff. Of course things changed by the time they got to the end of the line, but that had never bothered Nan. It was always fun to see how embellished a story could become.
She was a little disappointed but not surprised when Okassis said that he didn't know anything about the business in the Lower Caverns. Typical, really, since he was a man and they tended to keep their mind on their own business. Not to mention he didn't seem the type to go around getting to know all the Weyr girls intimately, so he wouldn't be any help in that respect. Thus, she turned her attention instead to learning all she could about the back-story of this new addition to the circle of awesome.
"Okassis? It's a pleasure to meet you! I'm Nandeli. You can call me that or Nan, I don't really mind. People 'round here usually refer to me as the Nose." The title didn't appear to bother her in the slightest, as she breezed past it to introduce the other members of the congregation. Once that was finished, the spotlight returned to the former Trader. "I'm afraid I don't know much about Traders, though I have met a couple at Gathers. Surely you must have had lots and lots of adventures when you were on the road?" She stared at him expectantly.

"We-e-ell," Okassis answered, feigning reluctance. Of course, in this group, it took no time at all to get a round of complaints and encouragements from the kitchen girls. Shaking his head and laughing, he cut through his peeled tuber, quartering it, and tossed it with the rest of the cut potato. "Ha! Somethin' tells me that if I don't start talking, the entire Weyr's gonna be going on about what a bore I am!" Grinning roughly, Okassis swiped his sleeve over his nose and hunched forward, more like a storyteller at a campfire than a new acquaintance around a pile of tubers.
"Let's see... in this company I'm sure, you all must know about Watchwhers, don't you?" Okassis's voice took an a particular booming quality as he spoke now, the kind which carried well over indifferent noise and enunciated every word. "Well, a couple years back, they had a big ol' beast at Greystone Hold called Greystesk. Now, you think regular whers are monsters! The Benden folk liked to say his egg must've been hatched by proper dragons. the way they're talking, it's half the size of a green, with just as much bite, and if you think Thread's got a nasty bite, that's nothing like this guy's jaws. A mouthful for him would be half of you!"
"Then, it must've been Jaenal who hears about this wher, and he's certain that we have to get a look at it. We get someone to show us to it, and Jaenal gets one look at the thing and starts laughing. It's big, all right - not so big as half a green, but bigger than any wher I've ever seen before - but would you believe it, the thing's old enough to've seen the last Pass end! Greystesk takes one look at us and starts bristling, like it doesn't know what we are, and the thing's missing most its teeth. Didn't look like it'd gotten to chew on more than bones in weeks, either. One of the saddest things I've ever seen."
"So Jaenal and I talk about these, and we start running our mouths off about what sort of lousy Hold couldn't keep care of a poor wher, and the guy who showed us there gets a bit angry. Talking gets to shouting, gets to shoving, and pretty soon we've got a street brawl. And well, I've been in more than a few fights, I know what I'm doing so I'm not really taking it seriously, and then somebody gives me a good whack when I'm busy shouting at Jaenal not to be too rough on the poor guys, and I wind up by the wher, which is pretty excited by the fuss already."
"Now, that thing might not have teeth, but claws...." Sardonically, Okassis ran a finger over the scar above his right eyebrow. "Knocked me straight down and got my head in one of them, and I'm thinking, scorch it, I'm done for. The poor thing's so old, it doesn't seem to know what to do now that it's got me. Then I figure that if I'm going out, I'd better do it in style, so I ball up a fist and hit the wher right on the nose, and it draws back. And you could just see the look in its eyes where the poor thing mutters to itself, "I'm too old for this fardling mess", and backs down. And I'm out of there in a heartbeat, and Jaenal's shouting something in my ear because I'm bleeding everywhere, but the two of us, we just got out of there as fast as we could!"
By the end of the story, Okassis had barely managed to peel the single tuber he'd started with. Gesturing emphatically as he spoke, the youth had grown far more animated than when he'd first come into the room, neglecting his work. Now that his story seemed finished, Okassis polished it off with a swipe of his blade through the tuber.
"So what about you, Nose?" he asked, picking up the nickname perhaps a little too quickly. "You've got to know some good stories, don't ya?"

Indeed, the kitchen staff was all ears for new material. The majority of the permanent staff had only been as far as Ista Hold, and so stories of the "outside world" so to speak were fairly rare in their tuber-peeling corner. The fact that Okassis had been all over the island was very exciting, even for Nandeli. Daring adventure stories were second only to forbidden romance on her list. When he hesitated to tell his story she joined her voice in the encouragements that came from the other girls, equally interested in what he had to say. His comment about the Weyr made her laugh. "Well, I don't know about being a bore, but we could get creative." Nan waggled her eyebrows and nudged one of her neighbours suggestively. Several of the girls giggled. Luckily, Okassis's reputation was saved when he started telling his story.
Several girls stopped what they were doing to stare at him as he spoke, completely riveted. Even Nandeli's hands slowed as he spoke, nodding eagerly whenever it looked like he needed more encouragement. Who would have thought that a Trader would have got into a fight with a Holder about the conditions of a Watchwher? If Okassis hadn't been so good at telling the story, she wouldn't have believed it. Clearly they were finding more and more interesting Candidates when they went out on Searches!
"You escaped from a Watchwher? Woooow… now that's something that you don't hear every day! Good on you for standing up for the poor creature, even if you did get a scar out of it." Her praise was echoed by the kitchen girls, who were reluctantly returning to their work. All except Nandeli, who was tapping her chin thoughtfully with her spare hand.
"Well, it depends on what kind of stories you'd like to hear really. I don't know any stories quite like the one you just told, but I did hear about this argument in the Lower Caverns. I'm not sure if you know, but apparently some of the Candidates who come to the Weyr think that they should lecture riders about what they think dragonriders should be doing. Why they do it I'll never know, since I mean they come here to be dragonriders, you know? Anyways, so this girl says she was arguing with a bronzerider down there about that sort of things, but we totally think it's something different." She leaned in closer, as did several of Okassis's neighbours. "We think that there was some sort of secret relationship between the two of them, and that's what convinced her to come up to the Weyr."
"Because everyone knows that doing that with a bronzerider will get you the Queen," said one of the girls, causing the circle to break out into giggles.
Nandeli simply grinned. "Exactly! You wouldn't happen to have heard anything about that floating around, would you? We're trying to figure out exactly what was said between the two of them. You didn't fall into that bronzerider trap though, did you?" She winked at him.

Bronzerider trap.... Shards, he'd have to store that pretty little phrase away for later! Who knew, maybe he'd get a bronze someday, and then he was sure he'd get to bandy it about like a "get out of awkward conversation free" card.
Looking up from his spud, Okassis smiled coquettishly and fluttered his eyes, asking, "Aww, is it that obvious, then?"
Breaking immediately into a laugh, he shook his head. "Haven't heard anything about it, but it wouldn't surprise me. A couple of the ladies - with present company excluded! But SOME that I've seen around here don't seem to be looking for anything but - ah, well, you know," he edited his words quickly, deciding better than to finish his vulgar thought in present company. Then Okassis seemed to second-guess himself again, and grinning, finished his thought: "Dragonrider-riding."

"It's hard to say sometimes. Bronzeriders can be very devious." Nandeli waved a tuber at him. "You had better be careful, though the next worst thing is the roaming bluerider. Take L'mel for example. He's got such a reputation that I hear some of the newer Candidates are avoiding him just out of principle! It's quite amazing. You should be careful yourself. You're definitely handsome enough to find some eyes on you. Or perhaps some ladies on your lap." The girls giggled as though at some inside joke.
"Oh but definitely!" Nandeli agreed readily with Okassis' observations. "There are girls around here who I am sure were only chosen by the Searchriders because of their looks alone, though a certain willingness would definitely have been considered." It was quite normal for Nandeli to speak of such things openly, though whether it was her upbringing or just her own nature was unknown. Still, she didn't seem at all flustered by what they were talking about. In fact, she seemed to be thoroughly enjoying herself.
She laughed at his final words, joined by the laughter of the kitchen girls. "Dragonrider-riding! That's a good one. Tell me, have they given you a tour of the Weyr yet? Or did they just put you straight to work?"

Scraping a few stubborn bits of skin off the tuber in his hand, he listened carefully to the run-down of the relationship drama within the Weyr. He didn't know who L'mel was, but made a note to keep the name in mind - and of course he had to grin at the compliment, taking it as gracefully as he could with a swelling ego.
Nodding his understanding of "those" Weyr girls, the conversation quickly turned to his knowledge of the Weyr. "Neither, truth to tell," Okassis admitted. "I came in a bit bloody, so I went straight to the Healers' - and by the time they let me go, I got shoved to the quarters, and I've been finding my way since. They just put me on some kitchen duties today. At least it's easy enough to find them; any Candidate worth their robes ought to be smart enough to follow the smell of klah in the morning!"

"Neither? Tsk tsk." She was falling behind on her duties! Pretty soon there would be men and women wandering around the Weyr like little lost dragonets, not knowing where to turn. They would have to be pulled out of abandoned classrooms and stairwells, nearly starving and parched of thirst. It would simply be dreadful. Not to mention all the things they would miss by not knowing the way around? Like, for instance, how was this handsome man ever going to become acquainted with all the dark corners and 'secret' tunnels if she didn't show him around? Clearly she needed to solve this problem, and quickly.
"I'll tell you what. How about the next time I do my rounds to collect the mending I'll show you around? It'll only be a bit of the Weyr at a time, since I don't do all of the Lower Caverns, but it might help. I'm sure the dining hall easy enough, but some of these caverns go pretty deep. By why ever did you end up in the Healers when you got here? You weren't sick, were you?"

"I'll take you up on that, if you don't mind," Okassis agreed readily. Nan seemed like a nice girl, after all, even if she had an obvious vested interest in digging after information - and shards, did he need the help if he was going to be keeping company in these parts!
"Ah, not sick, no," he chuckled. "Just got into a bit of a scuffle when I got Searched, came in a bit bloody." That might have been an understatement, actually; though it had scabbed over a fair amount, the gash in his arm still had a number of stitches holding it together after getting split open. He held it out sheepishly as proof. "It's nothing, though. I'm sure plenty of the Candidates come by with worse - I heard that there was some blood at the last Hatching, in fact?" Okassis turned expectantly to the Nose, sure that she'd know all about it.

"Wouldn't have offered if I minded," Nandeli replied easily. Showing around a handsome young man like Okassis would be her pleasure. And if they could find anyone in the dark corners than the tour would be doubly useful. The Nose was not the type to pass up that kind of an opportunity.
She leaned in when he held out his arm, tsk-ing softly. "Well, I'm glad the Healers saw to you and fixed you up. Certainly wouldn't have been very good if you were Searched only to be too injured to Stand!" It had happened before, and the Candidates were always unhappy when it did. Okassis didn't look the type to get depressed, though you never know. He could want to be a dragonrider more than he let on. "Most of them actually come in pretty good shape, though there's been some rumours floating about about a couple of them who got sick before the Hatching. Pity, really."
The mention of bloodshed at the last Hatching caused a murmur to start in the corner of the circle, and Nan nodded solemnly. "Yeah, this green came charging out of her egg, and I guess the girl was between the green and her rider to be. Wasn't fatal or anything, but she clawed the girl up real good. We haven't had any dead at the Weyr for a while, but it has happened before. Dragons don't know their own strength." She shook her head, before adding in a brighter tone, "But don't let that scare you! It's usually the female dragons that come out a little cross, so you should be fine. Unless you're hoping for a green?"

To that, Okassis couldn't help but bark a laugh. "Do I seem like a Greenrider to you?" he scoffed with a wide grin. He imagined the perfect dragon, the one that he would Impress, who would suit him in every way - and all he saw was bronze. Sure, the universe might have a laugh at him later, deal him an unexpected hand - but Okassis couldn't believe that it would. Let the smaller and speedier go to the Holdborn, the ones that would need it for dodging Threadfall (should it come). Traders were of sterner stock!
His egotism passed, and he sombered. "Still, I think I'll keep my distance from the girls out on the sands," Okassis mused. He came here to Impress, after all - not to make a dragonling's first chew toy! "I take it that you were at the last Hatching yourself, Nose? What's it like out there?"

Nandeli simply grinned impishly and shrugged her shoulders. "You can never be sure with dragons. Sometimes you're thinking 'man that guy should totally ride a green' and then he ends up with a bronze! They always say that station and rank have nothing to do with the dragon's decision, but you'd have to see it to believe it." Take her for example. She'd been here her whole life and a dragon hadn't so much as looked at her yet. Even in the last clutch, some were Weyrbrats, others Holders, and there was even a smattering of apprentices to some Craft in there. One could never be sure about the outcome of a Hatching.
"That would definitely be a good idea. Oh, and if a green comes barrelling your way, try to just dive to the side. Will save your face, at least." Most dragon wounds were not fatal if they didn't get a good shot at you. Nan was hopeful that Okassis's first time Standing would not end in complete tragedy. At the mention of the last Hatching she nodded. "I've been Standing for as long as I was old enough. One of the benefits of living at the Weyr is you don't have to be Searched. But the last Hatching was nice. It's hard to give a play by play about it, because so much happens at once, but basically all the Candidates run to the Sands when the humming starts. One egg'll hatch, and the dragon inside will wander until they find who they're looking for, and the once the first dragonet is out all of them start hatching. The Queen egg waits until last, though, and everyone, even the riders in the stands all wait for her to hatch and pick the next queen. That's the most exciting bit, to be honest. Of course you'll learn all about this kind of stuff at the Candidate lessons, but it's always nice to get a head start. You ever seen a Hatchling before?"
