The moon sat high in the dark sky as night graced the land. An eery feeling drifted from tree to tree as the wind made the limbs sway rhythmically. The dried leaves that still clung to their branches rustled against one another as the breeze blew past them. A chill had set in over the rich houses that lined Gambino Beach on this night.
Many occupants of the large houses were tucked into bed and dreaming of the joys to be had in the morning. Yet amongst all these people, in the mansion far off from the rest, one figure could not whisk themselves away to dreamland. It seemed almost impossible for him to close his eyes and sleep like his guardians. Even the dog could fall asleep but not him.
Iorek floated lonesomely beside his window like he had done many nights before. Bright green eyes, a soft glow emitting from them even in the darkness, were focused on the land outside. He just couldn't get to sleep no matter how hard he tried. It was hard for the young raevan to explain fully, but to put it simply his body just felt so alive at this time. While others were awake during the day he was awake in the quiet hours of night.
Like a statue Iorek remained by the window, his muscles stiff and unmoving. At least he could put his alert mind to use and stay watch over the home. He knew that this put the children to ease and that was all he wanted.

Under dark of night did she descend upon the Maevin homestead. Her steps tread light through the yard being sure to avoid all the silly traps. Were they kidding with this kind of stuff? One would think with the kinds of things this house was rumored to have inside their security would be better. Maybe it was just a thing to deter people or was it to fake them out for when the thieves got to the house where the real security was? Guess she'd find out.
Carefully she rolled herself towards the house. She lifted a mirror up to check the window above her half covered face. The coast was clear, yet she couldn't just jump right in. Placing the mirror back in its pouch, nimble fingers riffled through another on her belt. They pulled out a tiny silver device that she rushed around the edges of the window. A little surprised that the scan for breaking in devices came up clean, the black haired woman gently eased the window up. It wasn't even locked! She smiled to herself, oh this was going to be cake.

Iorek's eyes traced over the land that rested outside the home. It looked so creepy at this time of night. The trees rustled and the shadows they created on the grass almost looked human like. A shiver raced down the gargoyle raevan's spine as such a thought made it's home in his mind. He scowled and looked back into his room for a moment. Human...? Could it be...? No...He was just imagining things.
Reks turned his vision back onto the yard, back to spot where the tree's shadows looked human. There was nothing there. Just what he thought: His eyes were playing tricks on him.
Slowly the raevan retreated away from his window post and floated back into the room he had been given. Just like outside here too was dark. As much as he hated turning his eyes away from the outdoors, Iorek knew he shouldn't stand guard for too long. Based on previous problems, if he stared outside for too many hours he'd become paranoid.
It had happened three times already and with all those times he had woken up the whole house. Since whenever he became severely guarded, he'd race out of his room, down the hall, and barge out the door. Not only did he push open the doors so they crashed against the walls but also his large arms knocked all sorts of statues to the ground. It may have been a protective maneuver on his part, but neither Lillian nor Tyson enjoyed cleaning up the mess he left in his wake. They also didn't like waking up in the middle of night. Unlike Iorek, they enjoyed sleeping.
So when Iorek's ears perked at a noise he heard downstairs, the raevan merely shook his head in denial. No. He'd have to wait and see if anything else sounded before he became the guard dog.

The thief froze to the spot when a floor board squeaked audibly under her foot. She waited a few moments to make sure no one woke up to the sound before slowly removing her foot and gliding softly around the area. She wasn't too worried, from what she'd learned the house was only occupied by two children and their old dog. If what she knew of children with old dogs was accurate, then she'd have no problems of not waking them.
Two probing silver orbs silently swept to and fro, taking in all that was in the place before moving to the hall. She wasn't there for anything specific, but she would take only what she could carry. Though from the looks of things, it wouldn't be that easy to leave with only a few items. Just from the first room and the hall, the place seemed to be packed with all kinds of valuable items.
Removing a black clothed bag, the female began stuffing whatever her gloved fingers came into contact with into it. Just then a particular tribal mask hanging haphazardly on the wall sparked her interest. That would surely bring a good amount of gold her way. Smile hidden beneath a half mask of her own, she eagerly moved towards the object of her desire. Her fingers curled just under the mask and was quick to yank it off the wall. Yet...the mask had other plans. Although it had looked to be falling off the wall, it was indeed quite secured to it. Ebony a gave a small grunt and tried harder to pry it off. What the hell had they used? A screw?

The stoney raevan froze in his drifting suddenly. His long ears were raised high as he listened to the world around him. Something wasn't right....
Just then it felt as though he was on fire. Iorek cringed and angled himself in every direction to fight off the burning sensation. Like a disease it began in between his eyes and spread throughout the rest of the body he possessed. The invisible attacker prickled and bit at his stone flesh that he had once thought impenetrable.
Blindly the raevan groped around his room, searching for some kind of remedy to ease his problem. Anything would do if it helped him with this pain. One of his large hands touched something cool and round. The doorknob! Lillian could help him!
Quickly, eager to escape the pain, Iorek opened the door and before he could make it outside his room he knocked into a fleshy being. A soft grunt sounded as a boy covered in the night's shadow fell to the floor.
"Tyson?" Reks hissed just below a quiet whisper. He knew it was the boy by the grumbles the shadowy figure uttered "W-What are you doing up?"
Iorek waited and listened to hear what the boy had to say since he was unable to see him clearly in the darkness.
The floor squeaked softly as the lad rose to his feet and muttered a complaint before whispering. "I heard something...I-I want you to go see."
That certainly caught Iorek off guard. Tyson wanted him? He wanted him to go check and see if there was danger? Never before had the boy asked for his assistance. Heck...he seemed too afraid of him to ever ask. But now, with something lurking in the night, it was he who the lad rested his faith in.
With a chest swimming in delight and pride Iorek reached out and grabbed what he imagined to be Tyson's sleeve. A soft 'shush' was whispered to the little brother as Iorek led him down the hall and towards the stairs that led downstairs. There they would wait to see if anything else sounded.

All her concentration had been on trying to force that damn mask off the wall without making too much noise and without breaking the valuable, that the thief hadn't heard the soft shuffling and murmurs above.
She let out a soft whisper of breath at her frustration while placing her bag of stolen goods down on a nearby chair stacked with boxes. Realizing if she continued to keep up the force she'd been using earlier, Ebony would surely break the mask or the wall which would obviously make some noise. Nimble fingers went to the pouches of her belt once more and took out a slender pen like device. Leaning in close, she clicked a button on it revealing a red laser light of which she directed onto the tiny bit of metal that was attaching the wall to the mask. Slowly, the nail began to give way, spots of silver dripping to the floor. It wouldn't be long before the mask was hers!

The pain continued to pull and pinch at Iorek's skin. He felt very anxious as he dragged Tyson to the corner of the wall that gave way to the stairs. By how he felt at the given moment, Iorek could have sworn that soon his body would react on it's own accord and fling him downstairs. Something was down there...and he wanted to get rid of it.
'It's okay...deep breaths...in and out..breathe in and out.' A gentle voice whispered in the deep twisting caverns of Iorek's thoughts.
His mind wished to stay calm; to think reasonably...like Lil...but...his body-his claws ached to catch onto something and his teeth grounded against the above and bottom rows wanting to latch onto a solid-no-flesh and bone they craved.
Iorek's breath stopped in the middle of his throat when he realized these dark animalistic desires. He nearly choked when he pushed down the air and quietly gasped for another mouthful. Such intense feelings. Could he-WAS he going insane?
Iorek glanced sideways at Tyson. He needed to see someone, even the one who really didn't like him, just to stay in place. It was then, as he clung to his piece of humanity, that he saw the boy in a new light. The boy who once seemed so strong and cold had vanished tonight. Instead, all the gargoyle could see was a frightened child, clinging to his hole-ridden and torn ribbon. The hand Tyson had against the wall was the only thing keeping him from collapsing on the floor. Fear of the unknown could really change someone.
Ever so slowly Iorek sank down to Tyson's level, reaching out a large hand to pat the child's bushy head. "It'll...be alright." He whispered under his breath, wishing to portray the soothing tone and kind gesture Lillian had given him when he arrived at their home. Now seemed like to time to offer it to Tyson, and by the nod he was given Tyson had accepted his words.
Iorek smiled ever so slightly before looking back down into the living room. He knew he had to act soon or else the developing need to attack would take away his to reason. So, with that in his mind, Iorek began to float down the stairway. As he drifted to the middle stair, his glowing green eyes caught the red light and without even realizing it a deep growl sounded from his throat. His fists clenched, the cracking of his knuckles falling into the living room.
"Get out of my house..." Iorek had intended on that being a warning as he sought to find the figure in the night. Yet once he caught the form maneuvering itself stealthily among his families things, he was off like a bullet towards her. His body was reacting to the need to protect not just the house, but those who resided in it.
A pair of bright green eyes that left a glowing trail was now heading straight towards Ebony, ready to defend.

The laser pen fell in surprise from her fingers at the sound of growling and...was, was that rocks being ground together? She wasn't quite sure, but the low, serious voice that punctured the silence then was more than enough to garner her attention if not the rest.
She opted to remain quiet and still for perhaps the person hadn't seen her yet being she was all in black and the area they were in was not good with lighting at that particular moment. 'Bad decision!' thought the thief as she jumped out of the way at the last possible moment. It all happened so fast that Ebony's brain had little time to make any real calculations. Lucky for her that Iorek wasn't the only one that knew how to operate solely on instinct.
Finally giving the attacking guy and herself enough space between them, herself precariously perched on some sort of bureau in a very Spider-man-ish pose, Ebony could see there was another smaller form that had been behind the other. One of the kids she'd heard about that lived here, but then...who was this guy? Those silver eyes carefully, but quickly examined him. They soon widened when she realized he had no lower half except for a tattered swirling ribbon. "A raevan? Here?" she whispered soft to herself.

The force Iorek had used to launch himself from Ebony continued to shoot him forward even after he had missed his target. From out of the corner of his eye, he could see the figure dart away from him. To see the shadow getting away only made Iorek's body ache further with the need to get rid of the pest.
A snarl sounded from the beast as he raised his great arms. Eager to stop his movement before he collided into anything, one of Iorek's great hands reached out. Stone claws gripped the nearest wall, dragging against the wallpaper and sinking into the wood. The old paper squealed and cried as it was shredded away from its home. A clumsy move on Iorek's part, especially as he knocked off two paintings from their unseen resting places, but this was the first time he had ever needed to rely on instinct. One was bound to mess up in a first time situation. But as Iorek used the weight in his other arm to lift him away from the wall and turn right back around to face the unknown, he had already planned to have as little mess ups as possible.
With a beat of his large leathery wings, the sound of still air swooping and whooping under his weight heeded another warning as it gave way to his power. Iorek was off once more towards the form. His normally kind eyes now narrowed in the face of danger and pearly fangs bared to take on any challenge. Now, as his soul reacted to the intruder's presence, Iorek found himself loosing focus on whether he wanted to chase away this villain or take a bite out of them.

Surprising as it was to see a Raevan here, it was more so to see one of this caliber. Ebony had never seen one with such raw power, then again she'd never seen any of the half bodied creatures really going at it major battle royale style. Yet, now was not the time to gawk in awe, the thief needed an exit strategy and fast!
Silently, her eyes darted between the Frei and her bag of stolen artifacts still laying on that chair just barely out of reach. The Bandit's pride wouldn't allow her to leave empty handed, but in order to regain the goods she would need to slip past Goliath here. Not an easy task with him raring back for another attack at that very moment.
Torn between greed and possible capture or death, the currently black haired woman tried a fake route towards the boy. If she could mislead the Raevan into thinking she was going for the child, Ebony could then re-route at the last moment and grab the bag before making her way out.

Iorek was snarling and growling like a lion as it battled for dominance. With every move he made to attack Ebony his gesture was lit up in green from the trailing glow in his vibrant eyes.
From the top of the stairs where Tyson's frozen body stood it looked like a small light show was taking place. Swirls of green light jumped one way, then another, as it pursued to get rid of the shadow that kept one step ahead of him.
Never had Iorek seen an intruder much less face one in this house of wonders. The part of his mind that wasn't clouded with beastial instinct continued to warn him to slow down so he could focus on the overall task at hand. He had to keep the house safe, the children were what mattered...not the valuables. The chilled voice begged for Reks to cease listening to the brash cry of instinct. But his large claws that grasped a hold of the floorboards and walls craved to come in contact with soft flesh. His long ears, twitching like a rabbit's as they listened to the thief jostle around, wanted to hear the invader cry with pain. His teeth, barred like a dog's, ached to fall on something warm and juicy rather than hard and cool rock. After all...they had entered his families home, their lair, and the protective beast's heart wanted this shadow to pay. He was not becoming the monster here...this creature in black was.
As Iorek flung himself to the ground again he used the force to spring back up with use of his wings in an act to shoot across and tackle the shade. He could hear the shadow's labored breathing as they ran in front of him. The patter of their feet upon the floor boards were swift...but he'd catch them. And once he did...oh boy...he'd rip them to--
"Iorek! HELP!"
Tyson's wail from the staircase broke the growls and snarls that had been raging in the raevan's head. Not only did they bring a wave of hush to that but even his muscles halted all action. He froze in place and merely hovered above the ground. The green eyes turned rapidly to focus on the lad at the top of the stairs.
What he saw was that the flight or fight instinct had become stuck in the middle. Frozen had become the third F added to human instincts. Unable to move, the lad watched with horrified eyes this slim being darting in his direction. Only a few feet did his body manage to move back before the invisible ice took hold of his legs again. There was nothing the lad could do but cry out for help from someone he feared and detested just hours ago.
The raevan paused in his thrashing movements to stare at the youth. Those eyes that had once glared at him with anger and mistrust now pleaded for a saviour as they watched the shadow run towards him.
'STOP!" Iorek bellowed as he took off after the figure, his wings pumping faster than before. In his fury to reach the lad before the demon did Iorek knocked prized possessions off their shelves and to the floor. A chorus of breaking vases and shattering frames of portraits sang in the wake of Iorek's flight. But that didn't matter, not when Tyson feared for his life. Raising his arms forward, Iorek zoomed forward, his eyes focused on Tyson as he was prepared to shoot through the shade in order to save the boy.

"STOP!"
The shouted plea was largely ignored as the thief made her mad dash towards the youth. Adrenaline pumping hard in her veins, Ebony could hear the major shift just behind. She heard the delicate snapping of his wings as they flapped to propel him forward, the symphony of various items as they fell from their strategically positioned places around the hall, and she felt the ghost of his stone claws reaching out desperately to grab any part of her he could manage to before she reached his young guardian.
As a wide-eyed and most obviously fear frozen Tyson looked on, the Bandit leaped over the boy's tussled bedhead and just barely missed being caught in Iorek's massive arms as they loudly clamped onto nothing but air. Padded feet directed towards the wall behind the child, Ebony instantly ricocheted off it and flipped agilely right over the enraged Frei. Quickly she back tracked and grabbed her stolen goods before running back towards the open window she'd slipped through earlier.

Tyson fell to the floor as his legs gave out in terror. At least his arms still worked for they flew up to cover his head as he saw the villain racing towards him. He gave another cry of fear, terrified whoever they were would get him. But before he could be swallowed up by the dark beast the lad was scooped up into strong and protective solid arms.
Iorek didn't care anymore about the intruder. He didn't care about what treasures they were getting away with. They invaded his home, destroyed the living space, terrified his guardian, and just created a lasting memory of terror. But all that mattered was Tyson's safety. As he gathered the child up into his arms, pressing him close to his chest, his wings flapped and shifted to form a shield around them. Iorek pressed their bodies to the floor in an effort to stay low and away from danger.
"Tyson...Tyson you're alright. Shhh it's fine." Reks murmured to the hiccuping and sobbing boy that he clutched tightly to his chest. The lad's breath came in quick hot puffs against his neck, his body trembling violently.
"You're safe." Iorek managed to whisper to the lad while his own body creaked and crackled with rage. Rage...poisonous fiery rage...that's what moved through his veins now and fueled the green glow flowing from his eyes. Tyson was safe, he had secured his safety rather than go after the villainous cretin. But when he found this thief, and he promised himself that such a day would come, no one would prevent him from bringing justice to this deed of theirs. Whoever they were, they would come to regret ever getting away with a piece of the Maevin treasure.

So easily did she get away that it almost seemed unfair, but alas it was truth. Away the thief would race, stealing into the night with a solemn glance back to the home she'd tainted for all eternity. Never would this night completely leave her, the memory of an utterly terrified child sobbing and a thunderous roar would always stay with her. One day she would have to make it up to them not as the Bandit, but as the woman she proclaimed to be. For now, the masked thief made her way back to her lair where she would store the items out of sight and out of mind until such a day did indeed come.
