Runihura the leopard was not happy. A large majority of that emotional state could be contributed to the fact that a week ago, he had been separated from his sister in a hyena attack. The rest was presumably due to the fact that in fleeing alone he ended up being completely lost in an unfamiliar territory - a great expanse of unclaimed savanna. He was blue - literally - and stuck out like a bruised thumb in the waving golden grasses. In the jungle, blue was a passable color. Leopards spent so much time squeezing through trees that color was negligible factor in hunting. But here, open and exposed, it could prove fatal if he didn't keep his guard up. Streaking through the grasses, he kept his silver eyes peeled for a tree. Anything he could climb up and escape the dangers of being stuck on the ground! He needed to spend some time reviewing his situation, and how to find his sister Nkosazana again.

To be frank, it wasn't proving to be a fantastic day of hunting for Nyuki'uma. The brown and gold lioness matched with her surroundings, but even so... it seemed nothing stuck around long enough to be picked off. Nezahualcoatl looped between her feet as she stalked the grasses. "No luck today, darling," she crooned to the snake. Neza didn't respond - and never had to anything she'd spoken to it before. But she found the scaly thing endearing anyway. It followed her, whether she liked it or not, and she fed it whenever she happened upon something she could take down on her own. She pondered sleeping off the afternoon, when her ears perked. Something was coming her way, and fast. A cheetah? Not quite fast enough; cheetahs only ran after their dinner, anyway. A lion would make more noise. Maybe she was in luck after all? She crouched down and disappeared into the grass, gently placing a paw on Neza and telling him to hush up.

The blue leopard was astounded. Not a tree in sight! And not a whole lot of other animals either, except for some large herds on the horizon, like clusters of ants. Rather than waste valuable energy, he slowed down to a more casual pace. This place was so confusing. If only Nko was here... she always knew where to go. Runi could hunt for himself, so he wasn't about to die of hunger, but that didn't mean he had a clue how to escape this place.
The grass crunched under his paws as he weaved through the grass. He was distracted by the possibility of dinner hanging out where the sky met the land. If he kept a good pace, he'd reach them in about an hour or two...

Nyuki'uma continued to crouch, eyes darting as she heard the sound of footsteps grow nearer. Neza was curled in the grass beside her, intelligent enough to know not to interrupt the lioness in a hunt. She was completely still save for the twitching of the tip of her tail.
She had considered joining a pride once. Guaranteed food and shelter would be nice. But all of these lions who banded together had such strange beliefs! Great or monstrous gods and beings permeated their lives. If only hers could be so exciting - day to day it was survival. No supernatural being guided her claws and teeth to kill. And since these prides made it a rule to believe what they did, she took the high road and decided not to bother. She could survive with honesty to herself out here, even if she had to work for her meal...

Runihura wiggled his nose. He thought he caught a whiff of something. Whatever it was, it was a smell he didn't usually come across. What was it? His mind was going through the sort of prey he usually ran across. Not a zebra, oh no, and definitely not a gazelle... It was a shame there were no trees around here, he could use a nap later that wouldn't compromise his safety. If there was one thing, he could be sure of, it was that the only two things you could find at the top of trees were birds and leopards.
All the while, Runihura continued to walk closer and closer to the hiding place of the starving lioness.

Had her luck turned around? Nyuki'uma hadn't had a view of her prey, but didn't want to ruin the possibility she'd get a bite by sneaking a look ahead of time. It was close now, so close... she hoped it was a stray baby gazelle. Those were her favorite, practically a delicacy given how difficult it was to take those things down sometimes. The lioness couldn't wait any longer. She'd strike first and ask questions later, if any really needed to be asked.
Muscles tensed and released as she launched herself at the unfortunate creature who had crossed her path. She was the living nightmare of many a species that survived on the savanna. A deep rumble sounded from her throat, mixing with a roar. "Hrrrrrow!"

To the leopard, it appeared the grass itself had suddenly reared up and lashed out at him. Briefly he saw teeth and claws, but by then his legs had mechanically been set in motion. SURVIVE! his body screamed, and his instincts answered the call before he had even begun to register that what he saw was a danger! Runihura had bolted as fast as his legs would carry him. It felt like his blood had turned all to adrenaline, heartbeat dangerously fast. The mysterious attacker hit the grass behind him, but he couldn't look back, not yet, not yet. Find a tree. He'd be safe in a tree!

Nyuki'uma hit the ground hard, setting up a small cloud of dust and dirt. She hissed and growled some more before pulling her face up out of the dirt and grass it had plowed into. She sat there for a few minutes while the situation sunk in. What could have happened? She'd let her impatience get the better of her, and suffered the consequences. One more failed hunt for the day. Her eyes narrowed as she watched the blue creature escape. Feh. Let it. Her stomach grumbled.
"Neza!" she called, in a low voice. The serpent flowed out of the grass and over to her paw, which it quickly coiled around.

A tree! Thank the gods!
He slowed down ever so slightly as he approached it. Runihura's mind repeated the awful encounter in slow-motion. A beast lurking in the grass - perhaps even a lion! How could it have missed? This was a dangerous place, and he didn't like it at all. Lions during the day, hyenas at night. He'd never get back to any jungle at this rate. The leopard latched onto the bark and scrabbled up to safety. He only realized he was shaking when the branch reflected it in the noise it made with him sitting on it. He wasn't going to move an inch from this tree till the next day unless something came up and made him.
He shifted into a better position to sleep, safe behind curtains of leaves which blocked his small blue form from view. Light still seeped, dappled, through the gaps, but he turned his head aside and they no longer danced over his eyelids. Even with adrenaline still coursing through his veins, he found a way to ease his rapid breathing, and soon he was fast asleep, a quick catnap for a very startled cat.

The brown and gold lioness lifted her paw for a moment, while the snake coiled about it again as though hanging on for dear life. For the sake of her pride, she wanted to go on this way - hunting alone, sleeping alone, living alone. Deep down, however, she knew it could not continue to be this way. Every day the prey grew scarcer, the water holes seemed farther away. The sun was hot and the hyenas were out in force. She would meet an early end if she continued down this path.
The prides... perhaps she could find it in her to fake an enthusiasm for one of these many gods. She knew she was going to make it hard for herself, the acting, but the futility of the day's hunt indicated her pride was going to make a skeleton out of her yet. Charm the simpletons into giving her exactly what she couldn't seem to get out here, food and shelter. What could go wrong?
