((Julius and Talonfaust only.))

The shop was quiet this morning, and it was a good thing, for Julius did not think he could take more than three feien in his company at a time. Three pushed the limits of his control, and had he come and found more than that number, he would have turned back immediately.

So quiet was good, even if it was not good for his purposes.

Three days now his dreams had been restless. Twice he woke in a cold sweat, once he nearly screamed. There were voices, shapes, faces, and the sensation of glass cracking, himself being dashed and thrown and torn to pieces --

But from behind the shield of his blindfold and invisibility, none of his agony showed. He was calm, controlled, steely even, and could delay no longer. He had to find out the meaning of his dreams. So he focused on the one face he could remember: Irisa. He had come to the shop now to find her. Emperial kept records of residences here.

Unfortunately, the shop was a place Julius preferred to avoid, and he did not know where such records were kept, or even how to decipher any address he might discover. He was confident that a clue would present itself. One always did.

Talon had arrived only a few moments earlier and stood complacantly on the counter. His original intent had been to come here to find something for Kookaberra that might repair the rift that had been placed between them a few days prior.

The searching had lasted only a moment as he realized he really had no idea what she might like before he'd withdrawn into his own thoughts, arms crossed over his chest and one ear cocked ponderously. It was not often the shop was devoid of activity and silence was a luxury he did not get often these days at home.

He and Berra clashing was really only the tip of the iceberg...things had been a veritable ******** since he'd arrived home. Robots dominating the house, Yeande and Shalafi having gone off for parts unknown with Youko or so it seemed when he'd gone to try and visit, Globin now taller than he was...

Why couldn't one damned thing just stay constant?

Julius touched down behind Talonfaust on the counter (a respectful and cautious distance away), secretly relieved, and dropped his invisibility. "Good day," he said plainly, steepling his fingers.

Talon jolted a bit as he was rattled out of his reverie and turned to see the ancient behind him. Relaxing a bit, he nodded respectfully. The prophecy feien, while his presense was daunting, was still welcome over the jangling loudness of most of the shop's other denizens

"Good day, Julius." he paused a moment and then, reasoning that the other feien, both by reputation and from their last meeting didn't strike him as someone who ventured out without necessity, asked "May I be of assistance?"

If Julius were in the habit of smiling, he surely would have, for this was exactly what he had been looking for. Instead he merely inclined his head the tiniest bit. "Perhaps you may. I was in search of another."

Talon nodded slightly. He didn't know where the listings were located in the shop as he'd never had need to look someone up before, but among himself, Berra, and Globin, he DID know where a handful of feien might be found.

"If I know of them, I'll certainly tell you what I can about finding them."

"I am looking for Irisa," said Julius, in a manner that suggested he fully expected Talonfaust to be able to procure her up in the next thirty seconds.

"Irisa." Talon repeated. His face betrayed nothing, but his ears wilted just slightly. They'd been back a good two weeks or so...surely by now she would have taken the tablets to Julius...? Or perhaps she had already. Perhaps this was about another matter entirely.

"I can tell you where she and her bond live, but I'm afraid I've not seen her these past couple of weeks." he said apologetically, though his mind was churning. Something else to fret over...great....just what he needed. It occurred to him that his eldest daughter was not exactly a recluse like he tended to be and it had concerned him a bit when she hadn't sent him notice of how things had gone...was she all right? Had she even made it home from the airport?

He pushed those thoughts out of hand. Worrying about things that might not even need worrying about was not what he needed right now. Surely there was a good reason.

"Her place of residence should suffice. If you have not seen her, it was only because I had sent her on an errand, but one I would have expected to be completed by now," said Julius. Was that a tinge of concern or regret in his voice? Perhaps, but the coldness that followed wiped all presence of sentiment away: "I think perhaps she might have failed in the task."

Failed...? Talon was unable to keep from quirking a brow. How had she failed? He'd been with her, he'd watched her retrieve the tablets she had been sent to get.....hell, he even had a cluster of pinhole marks just below his wings from being shot with darts.

"Forgive me, Julius, but Irisa had asked me along to Rome with her and I accompanied her on her mission. I was there when she retrieved the tablets and, to my knowledge, they came back to Gaia with us safely. I had assumed she had brought them to you by now, though I see that isn't the case..."

What the hell was going on? She hadn't seen Julius at all since coming back? Why?? Swallowing back further questions and the growing desire to flit off himself to find her right that minute, he drew in a breath and let it out in a sigh.

"Regardless, yes, I'd be happy to tell you where to find her."

"She retrieved the tablets?" said Julius, honestly surprised but hiding it well. The cogs in his mind began to turn. This made no sense. In his dreams he had seen her, and the broken tablets, and been dashed to pieces himself. He had assumed that this meant she had failed, for the Artificer tablets could not be broken. Their enchantments prevented that. Had she instead stolen them when they could be of no use to her?

Julius frowned thoughtfully. "I would ask that you first recount to me the happenings in Rome."
PostPosted: Sun Jan 16, 2005 7:36 am

Talon paused a moment, recounting what he could. Honestly, much of it was a sleep-deprived mishmash in his head...it hadn't precisely been an experience he wanted to preserve memories of.

"There was a point where we were separated for a time and when we met up again in Rome, she had retrieved a pair of gloves which were capable of casting mend even if the wearer was unable." he began.

"Once in Rome, we went to the Vatican where other items were gathered. A statue, goggles, a cloth apron, and a rubix cube. All of these were used in sequence to unlock a passage lined with glowing stones and it led to a room containing only a table and the tablets. Once they were retrieved, it triggered a dart trap."

He racked his brain for anything else, but could think of nothing. Nothing except the part where he could have told Julius that he looked like a goddamned reversed porcupine by the time he'd been dragged out of there, but that wasn't necessary information, thank gods.

"We escaped it with the tablets intact and returned with them" he finished, watching Julius carefully as he did so.

Julius gave a sudden hiss, inhaling sharply. "A cube? What sort of a cube?" His fingers tensed, and suddenly his demeanor seemed very angry.

Talonfaust recoiled a bit, finding himself disconcerted by the ancient's suddenly-angry countenance. "A rubix cube." he repeated, keeping his voice level, regardless.

"It resembled a child's toy with different colors on each side and with hundreds of tiny holes in it. The color influenced who could touch it on that side safely, and when all of the sides save one had been covered, the remaining pinpricks of light outlined a passage."

Julius thought over the list again. This... cube... a pair of gloves... goggles? The frown on his face deepened with each passing moment. This did not sound right. The exact identities of the Artificer items were not directly known to him, but his gut was telling him something was wrong. And then there were the dreams to consider.

They sounded like plausible artificer items, and the fact that they had led to the discovery of the tablets confirmed that, but at the same time the items sounded so unlike what the former headmaster of the school had told the Council to look for. "And you found these items in the Vatican archives?" asked Julius.
