Times were certainly stressful for all the rabbits of the warren. Hallowfell had not been amongst the ones who were out to siflay at the time the diseased rabbits had arrived, but he had heard stories from the other rabbits and had smelt the scent of death and disease on the wind. His fur bristled as he worried about these rabbits and he recalled the stories he had heard, each more exaggerated than the last. Certainly there wasn't the Black Rabbit amongst them, and the disease obviously didn't cause them to grow scales and go blind, right?
Regardless, the former owsla of another warren, now a happy buck in a new one, had a plan. Hopefully it would help to cheer up those who would be involved.
He stood on his haunches, just at the entrance of the warren, and thrummed a hind paw against the earth in a lazy, but alerting fashion. It was slow and didn't speak of danger, just trying to gain attention.
"All who wish to 'ear, 'ear me now! I found a delightful little patch of cowslip, and I don't know exactly what to do with it. So, let's have a race! All bucks, does, kittens, and outskirters who wish to participate, please come up as soon as you can! It will be a relay and we'll form several teams. First team to win gets the entire patch!"

Earperk? A familiar scarred face peered around the corner of the run, looking up at the oddly colored buck with the yellow man thing in his ear. "A race you say? That should be entertaining." Bracken pushed himself up from where he was sitting next to the run inside the Honeycomb and then made his way up, expecting Hallowfell to move aside so that he could pass and get outside.
Once in the open, the chief placed himself next to a protruding tree root to wait for any other participants or spectators to come out.

"Ought it be, Chief?" He chuckled as he moved out of the larger rabbit's way and gave a sharp nod.
"Oi! We got m'self and Bracken-rah! Ain't much o' a race, if it's just going to be between the two of us!" He called and thumped his foot thrice more, to emphasize his words. Surely others would want to partake in a good humored competition, instead of wasting away the day mulling and worrying about.
"Hah, bet I c'd run circles 'round you, ol' man, eh?" He taunted Bracken good humoredly as he shifted himself towards the root and waited eagerly for others to join in the fun. The buck certainly was what one could consider to be odd, but he did mean well in trying to stir the rest of the warren off of their rumps.
"Fig'yed we'd race down the opposite side of th' warren, away from th' scrapes. Dependin' on 'ow many show up, two-maybe three to a team, eh? Wot y'think of that? Any kits want t'join, they c'n do a fourth of what usn's do. Yep." He seemed to have a stock pile full of energy to burn, but he had been nestled inside the warren almost all day.
"Got a prize for any o' the young ones, regardless, heh." He chuckled as he plopped down on his rump.

Bracken chuckled lightly at the young buck's mild taunting, casting his gaze down the down as he smirked just a little bit. "Oh, I would think so. But there is no harm in stretching these old legs." At the suggested course for the race the chief then hummed to himself thoughtfully.
"Why not down the hill and back up? If you want a real race, make it one of stamina as well."
Looking back to Hallowfell he waited to hear his reaction and opinion while also seeing if any more of their warren mates were coming out to join them.

"Souns like a plan, Chief, an' I'm all for et, so I am." The younger buck chimed in with a reply as he stretched out his limbs and winked playfully at the other. A little humor and good will, that was what the warren needed right now, and by golly, he was going to help deliver it.
His ear and a half perked as he listened for sounds of any newcomers who were willing to step up to the plate and answer his challenge.
"Don' think I ever did get t'thank y' proper fer lettin' me stay, Chief. Jest want y't'know I'm greatful, that I am. Much appreciated, 'specially in light 'o recent events." He quipped cheerily as he kept his odd eyes out for others. No harm in small chit-chat while waiting and he hoped dearly that others would join in. "Ain't gonna go easy on y' when it comes racin' time, though, Chief!"

The thump had attracted the attention of another member of the Watership Down warren. Thumps were something that always attracted Blackwort's attention, and although this particular one was not a warning thump (it had no panic or desperation to it), he still thought it as his business to see to it immediately. Thus, the black rabbit was quick to appear in the mouth of the warren, blue eyes focussing on the strange coloured rabbit, nose waffing curiously. He was about to scold the other rabbit for thumping. At least until he smelled the aroma of the cowslip plant.
"Here here, what's all this silly nonsense, then?" He wondered, raising onto his hinds. He was about to add more to the sentence when he noticed the Chief Rabbit nearby. Blackwort was quick to lower his stance, not wanting to appear dominating or disrespectful to his own Chief.
"Is that a cowslip?" He said finally to the strange coloured rabbit, openly staring at his strange yellow tag. "I want the cowslip. Give it to me."

At one time, Hallowfell would of challenged the owsla officer openly, and it had been his brash bravery that had helped him to move up in rank in his former warren. Now, however, he wore a wily grin and shook his head at the larger buck. Bracken-rah was there and approved of the race, so he was sure the chief would back him if the aggressive officer pushed too much further.
"Aye, 'tis, certainly ain't legs of a frog. No can do, doseypaws, y'gotta earn 'em fair 'n square jest like e'ryone else!" He taunted, but still retained the good natured tone he had with their chief. He certainly meant no harm in his teasings, only trying to instill competetive spirit.
"See 'ere, we're 'aving a race o' speed an' endurance. Relay race, winning team splits the cowslip I found. Interested in givin' it th' ol' what for? We need more participants! So far s'jest me 'n Bracken-rah what are entering."

A small red doe stuck her head out of her hollow, twitching her nose at the scents that reached it. She'd heard the thump, and was curious as to what it meant, as it was not panicked or signaling danger. She thought perhaps Bracken-rah was calling some sort of warren meeting, but knew his thumping would be slightly more urgent if he was.
When she looked around, ears swiveling to listen to all the sounds, she spotted the gathered males, consisting of Bracken-rah, an owsla, and the interesting male with the yellow ear-thing. Curiously she listened for just a moment before deciding to join them.
She squeezed out of the entrance of the hollow and lopped gently towards the males, moving swiftly past the owlsa officer with her ears pressed back timidly. She stopped off to the side of Hallowfell and smiled sweetly at the slightly awkward male. "Did I hear something about earning cowslips?"
She was careful not to look at the owlsa, especially not in the eye. They all scared her slightly, even the males. They were large, powerful, and at most times quick to temper. It was best, in her mind, if she just respected them and stayed out of their way. That included making herself as little as possible.

A brown doe had grazed close to the gathering crowd, listening to Hallowfell's challenge but not wanting to be the first one to enter. She tensed when the black and scarred buck seemed to want to bully his way to the prize, but how much of a fight could it become when the Chief sat right there? When she saw she might not be the only female interested she sat up on her hind quarters. She could so beat that little doe. Larger didn't have to mean faster, but that thought did not cross U'tuhlroo's mind for a moment.
"I'm in," she announced, "It ought to be fun."
She might not have the speed of a runner or the strength of an owsla, but she would certainly try to give them a run for their cowslip. With the right team mates she could win anything. Yeah!

Much unknown to Redwood, a yound kitten had peaked his head out of the hollow after she had left. His wide blue eyes scanned the down until he saw her, and he scurried so quickly across the ground that no on noticed him. He skirted around the tree and hid behind Redwood, his adoptive mother, and listened to the conversation.
He'd heard something about a competition, for a patch of cowslip. He'd had none, before, but it sounded good, and if that big buck wanted some, then if Blackfoot could win it, he'd be tough. He'd be real tough.
"Hey Hallowfell?" He peeped suddenly, having learned the odd male's name from other kittens. He liked odd characters, so naturally he was interested in the buck. He was especially curious about the yellow earthing. Such an interesting story that must have behind it. He'd ask to hear it another day if Redwood let him. "Hallowfell? Can I play please?"
His ears perked hopefully as he took a few steps out, now standing in front of his adoptive mother, who made an odd sort of surprised sound. It was the kind of sound Blackfoot thought only a doe could make, for certainly he couldn't make his head create such sounds. They could be sounds that just Redwood could make, she was an odd doe at times as was, and Blackfoot would not put it past her to be unique in such a way. He loved her though, he truly did.

His full ear, tag and all, swiveled as he caught another voice. Seemed a doe was interested and a wry grin lightened the jubilant buck's dappled features.
"Y'certaintly did, m'dear. Nice, fresh cowslip for the winning team of this 'ere race. Y'ought t'enter, too." He insisted as he wiggled his nose, taking in the pretty, warmly hued doe. The coming of U'tuhlroo only egged him on and he was pleased that so many were turning out for the little event.
"I'm thinkin' it'll be burrows o' fun." He chuckled as the doe with the holed ear joined in. Most of these rabbits he did not know all that well. His ear swiveled again as he caught a small voice calling his name. The little kitten was adorable and polite, too.
"'Course y'can, little one. It'll be right good fun!"

"I have speed, I have endurance," Blackwort began to grumble, not wanting to entertain the idea that he would have to run for what he found every day on the down. "I also have more bulk and weight than most of you combined." He added sourly, for that was pretty much his entire reasoning as to why he deserved the cowslip plant without any of the competition.
"Why run for it?" He continued, irritated. The buck sat on his hinds and began to wash his face and his paws, running a paw back through tattered ears for a moment. "Why waste your effort on a piece of flayrah? I can settle this easily and quickly - give it to me. If anything, why don't we have a wrestling match for it? That doesn't involve going anywhere, we wouldn't want the warren-members running onto any elil, would we now? Maybe I couldn't wrestle Bracken-rah to the ground for it, but I highly doubt he sees the point in competition over a mere patch of cowslip anyway."
He puffed up his chest, feeling satisfied. Surely they would understand his reasoning and hand it over now, surely.
"Come on, hurry up. Give it to me."

Blackfoot wiggled excitedly, but was soon stilled by the black buck's speech. He eyed the large male for a few seconds, his ears flicking in silent consideration of the words. "Well, if you don't wanna play, you can go find your own flayrah!" He smiled. "I wanna play though. I really do. And Bracken-rah is going to play with us!"
His whole body wiggled with his excitement as he looked from Redwood to Bracken. Sure, they were adults, but that didn't mean he couldn't try to run with them. He'd just have to try extra hard. And if he didn't win, well maybe they'd share anyways.
He just hoped it wasn't that grumpy buck. He was pushy, and everything about his tone told Blackfoot that he was considered scum on this buck's tail. 'Why waste your effort on a piece of flayrah?' he recalled the buck saying. Well, flayrah is delicious! And probably better company that him. The kitten nearly giggled aloud at his own inner dialog, but held himself back. Would be a shame to lose his ears so young!
Redwood's ears twitch nervously and quickly she drew Blackfoot toward her, protecting the young kitten despite her fear of the buck. She would face any fear for her little kitten, even if it meant the most unbearable pain. Blackfoot deserved it, for he would grow up to be a grand buck, and she hoped he would find himself an essential place in the warren.
But for now, she just needed to keep his body intact, and that meant keeping him out of reach of this buck, who she knew could strike at any moment. She hoped, though, that Bracken-rah would stop any physical harm from befalling any rabbit in this small group.

Silanthria hopped slowly out of Dove's burrow, ignoring the protests of her new "mommy". She wasn't about to let Dove's fears conquer her curiosity at the gathering of rabbits she had never gotten to see before. Wriggling her nose, she slowly inched closer to the gathering until she was beside the odd rabbit who had spoken first.
"You have pretty eyes" She stated oddly, nervously, after all, he was only the 4th rabbit she'd ever talked to in her young life and it was fairly terrifying to do so.
Looking up admiringly at the older rabbit, she tried to make herself as tall as possible, and worthy of attention. She didn't really want to race for anything, she was too clumsy. However, she would love to watch all these bucks and does go at it. She only wished Dove was brave enough to come out and watch with her, she was too timid for her own good.
"I can watch you race?" Her eyes pleaded prettily as she spoke, hoping it would be alright.

"No."
Hallowfell challenged the large owsla openly, but there was still good humor sketched into his battered features as he did so. Perhaps Blackwort was larger and weighed more, but he was fairly sure in his own skill and the swiftness of his paws. Not only that, he had gathered this little group to have fun and to give them at least a brief break from the darkness and the death that seemed to loom over their home.
"Y'be wantin' it, you'll 'ave t'earn it like th' rest of us, or go find yer own. This's fer us all t'ave a bit 'o fun! Even Bracken-rah is joinin' in. Th' warren's 'ad 'nough troubles as 'o late an' a wee dab 'o fun might be jest what we need t'liven things up. As an owsla officah, yon must certainly want y'warren t'be lively an' in good 'ealth, yes?"
His torn ears twitched and swiveled as he caught two small voices. He couldn't help but to chuckle softly as he glanced down at the gathering kittens.
"S'the spirit lil' 'un! Nothin' like a good game! An 'o course you c'n watch, missy."
