xXToboe5Xx I clean my mouth peice about once a month and it's sometimes gross. I duno why, I never eat before I play and I don't let others play on it. btw that's gross, it's like kissing them gonk o.O your mouthpiece is "sometimes gross" probably because you only clean it once a month...no matter if you eat before you play or not, you're going to have nasty germs and "leftovers" from all the times you have eaten. sometimes you might eat different things so it would give you different bacteria o.O which can grow...and get gross...i'd recommend, if you're not going to clean it every time you play(which i admit IS a bit extreme) at least do it every 10-14 days... biggrin this will save you from GROSSNESS..and to address your disgust for letting people play your horn..o.O if you think the person is gross...then wash your MP before and after they play...if you think they're kinda good lookin o.O what's wrong with "kissing" them? xD

My Tuba mouthpiece gets dirty easily. So I was it when I can. Normally I dump out all the excess water on floors. It can get alot of water in there, sometimes it gets on the rim.

I typically at least wipe the excess spit out of the cup of my mouthpiece after I play. I usually don't do anything else though, except maybe wash it out every couple months. Believe it or not, I have the cleanest mouthpiece in my section.
We used to have a policy of "I won't look in your mouthpiece, you won't look in my mouthpiece" in the tuba section. I now know that most of my sectionmates haven't cleaned their mouthpieces since they got them. As much as four years in some cases.

one comment: Really bad topic to look at while eating neutral
The worst I have personally seen is crusty spit on my own mouthpiece. I've heard of other stuff(though neve slugs) but I have never witnessed it. i have witnessed a moldy alto sax though. my middle school BD made me play the one a kid I hate was using for a while while mine was in the shop, and it was really moldy. Knowing him, he probably never cleaned it.
Personally, I clean my clarinet mouthpiece out around once a week to once every two weeks. If I notice it getting kind of gross or if it smells funny or tastes weird when I suck spit out, theni usually clean it. And my clarinet is really good at telling me when I haven't clean it in too long. It stops plying, at leastnot well. It usually takes about a month for this to happen. I try not to wait until it gets to this point though. I'm not sure if t is acting up because of this right now. I'm having a few issues getting it to play, but it hasn't been very long since I last cleaned it...
