He wandered in and sat down with a heavy sigh, stretching his legs out into a somewhat 'tripping hazard' position as he relaxed, unwinding from flying with Coriath, training mostly, he hadn't gone out searching for a while. All things considered he was a somewhat curious 'face' to put on the Weyr, and their reputation was already ragged. The room was moderately full, a few gatherings placing Dice or other games, mostly engaged in low murmuring conversations that filled the air with a polite rumble of sound.
The Weyrling lessons were proceeding... well he guessed they were doing well enough, all things considered, and the faint bruise on his cheekbone was fading nicely. It hadn't swollen up as much as he would have normally expected, so he guessed he had to give the little hell-cat credit for that, even if she'd inflicted it to begin with.
He was still irritated by it though. He'd avoided her for...what was it. A couple years now? And she'd still drilled her fist into his eye. She had a sharding bony little fist too. That hadn't helped.
I could sit on her. Coriath noted, though he was joking, cooling down from his own exercise at their shared weyr.
She's too sharp. You'd hurt yourself. He joked back with a faint smile. Be nice.
I will when she does. The bronze snorted back. He hadn't told anyone about it, as he'd said he wouldn't, but then he was fortunate enough he'd also been able to mostly hide it, or that wouldn't have been possible. She has some luck, I'll tell you that much. He half agreed, with a prolonged sigh as he looked around the room. Forget about it for right now. We've got more important things to do. Weyrlings to teach, so on and so forth.

No matter how much one loves children, one can still be completely worn out by them. That exactly described Kaskel’s day. More parents than usual had dropped off their children at the crèche, including some particularly rowdy young ’uns that had a knack for discovering anything that hadn’t been child-proofed. By the end of his shift, the poor young man was physically exhausted, but his mind was still very much awake. He made a stop at the kitchens to get a calming cup of wine, then headed to the gaming room.

The rattle of dice and the fwap-fwap of cards being dealt were relaxing after hearing the constant screams, chatter, and high-pitched squeals of little ones all day. With a sigh, Kaskel slumped into an open seat with a decent view of the card tables. He might have played a hand or two on a better night, but he was a little low on marks at the moment. Slouching a bit in his chair, he took a swallow of his wine.

"Are you going to be alright?" S'kagi laughed slightly as he looked up from his own contemplation to spot the other man sagging heavily into a seat, his exhaustion written openly on his face.
A lot of people were working hard at the moment, some perhaps more than others, but then there was a lot going on. Hatchings, Touchings...overcrowding. He was almost surprised that the other mans expression and clear exhaustion weren't more common.

“I’ll be fine. Just winding down,” was the polite, but absent reply. When Kaskel actually looked at the other speaker a moment later, the conversation suddenly held a lot more interest. The man who sat nearby had black hair that hung over one side of his face, obscuring it. This was the rider who was spoken of, and quite scandalously so, at the gathering of gossipers not too long ago. Kaskel sat up a bit straighter in deference to the bronzerider. “You are the rider S’kagi, if I’m not mistaken?”

S'kagi blinked, studing the man in search of signs that he should recognize him for something more than another face in the Weyr, and then nodded.
"That's me. Sorry...have we met?"
He didn't think he'd seen him up close, though perhaps surrounded by children. Damn...what was his name?
Fortunately he didn't have any children that he knew of, or he'd have known of this man a little better, if only to keep tabs on whoever was caring for them. Not that the dragonriders themselves probably couldn't have afforded to take care of their own children in this calm.
What he was afraid of was that the man could have been talking to Raena. With sufficient ill will in the Holds, he was a little concerned it would eventually spread to the Weyr holds, and the Weyr, and Raena seemed an ideal carrier for that plague of hate. He just wished he knew if she'd always been that way or if he'd really affected her so permanently in his younger days. It seemed a stretch to him, but then again...

The young man gave a slight shake of his head. “Not formally. It’s just that bronzeriders tend to be pretty well-known. My name’s Kaskel, by the way. I work in the crèche.” Hoo boy. He’d just met this fellow, and now was preparing himself to ask a rather invasive question. How to word it? He didn’t want to offend a rider of any color, especially a bronze.

Scratching his temple with one fingertip, he began, “I... don’t usually pay much attention to these things, much less circulate them, but this one in particular bothers me. See, there’s a rumor going around…” He trailed off, waiting to see if the other man could predict the subject he was aiming for.

S'kagi relaxed for a moment at the initial question, leaning back with a quirk of the side of his mouth. The other side, the one that was partially hidden and didn't move, had a thin scar running from lip to chin. It looked like it had been deep once. "Nice to meet you, Kaskel."
He tensed slowly, like a cord being brought tight, at the mention of the rumor, and he looked faintly away for a moment, the fact that he was thinking deeply for that short span written openly on his face.
"I'm...sorry it's troubling you? What's the rumor? I'll try and put it to rest..."
He was clearly trying to sound unconcerned, but he was equally clearly bothred by, if nothing else, Kaskel's phrasing.

The fact that the rider was made uncomfortable by this conversational direction was not lost on Kaskel. “Anything said here doesn’t go beyond us,” he earnestly assured the other man. “And I make no claims to know any details, it’s only that there is a certain girl who appears to be out for your blood, so to speak.” He gestured with his upturned palm in a sort of shrug to illustrate his confusion. “No one else at this gathering had anything ill to say of you. We were all quite surprised, in fact.”

That clinched it, he had no doubt who it was now, and wasn't pleased by it either.
"Raena." he said her name like it left an unpleasent taste in his mouth, grimacing. He heaved an massive sigh, staring at the celing of the room for a moment as he played out something in his thoughts, then fixed the man with a more steady gaze.
"...It is her, isn't it?" He sighed. "What did she say?" He was sure this conversation would lead to more questions, but although he wasn't sure he wanted to answer them. He'd TOLD her, Shards damn her, that he'd cover up for what SHE'D done to him just for walking through a damn door, and she was running helker skelter snarling about him to the people of the Weyr.
He was breifly furious, and then wearied by the idea, then a mix of both as he debated her panic over the idea of having word of her actions spread.
"And what do you want to know?"

Thread take her, if she was going to do this, there was no point in hiding. The truth was ugly, but it was less painful than the potential rumors.

So the girl wasn’t unknown to S’kagi. And it was clear that he didn’t exactly adore her. “She said the two of you argued about the holders versus weyrfolk issue, but it sounded like complete nonsense to me. To be honest, she seemed more intent on giving you a bad reputation than having fun.” His dark eyes flicked away, then back to the rider. “I honestly have no interest in learning exactly what happened. All I want to know is whether or not you did something offensive enough that this rumor needs to be snuffed out before it gets back to the holders.” Knowing this could be taken very badly, Kaskel softened his latest words with a grim smile. “Fact is, I’m good friends with one of the most notorious gossipers in the Weyr. If needs be, I can get her to spread something else entirely.”

He paused, raising his eyebrow at the man as he considered this unexpected twist, and nodded slowly.
"Well actually it started more because she punched me in the face when I walked through a door." He pointed out, gesturing to his obscured eye. "She was...at the time... afraid I'd make sure she was shipped out of the Weyr for punching me, or get her declared Holdless, though that's rediculously melodramatic for a blacked eye." He admitted. "Besides, she'd probably be regailed as a hero in some of the holds and the Weyr doesn't need that. We've got enough problem supporting out own weight at the moment as I'm sure you've noticed. The lack of thead and the overcrowding in the Weyr have only increased peoples dislike of the Riders and Weyrs.
That's something I want to change, if I become Weyr Leader one day. I want to find a way to make that change, but thats off the point. I took the way she phrased something to mean that she thinks I'm incapable of doing good for the Weyrs OR for the Hold, and I objected to that. She said she meant no such thing, and that I should try and change things even without being Weyr leader, though without that power, my ability to change the way the Weyr interacts with the people is, well, sharding limited!" He sighed in exhasperation. "Sorry. It's an point of irritation for me. Anyway. I told her I was doing what I could. I asked Emori to stay, she doesn't come from a Hold that much cares for Riders and neither did she, which is actually why I'm pleased she did impress. If anyone can tell us what we need to know to change things, she can." He offered the man another faint smile. "Sorry. Probably a bit longer of an 'explination' than you were expecting. I'm sorry that the two of us and our...idiotic little argument have caused this level of distress.

Punching a bronzerider without provocation… Kaskel shook his head in disbelief. “She definitely left out the part about hitting you. I would have remembered that.” He listened to the rest of S’kagi’s explanation, surprised at how strongly the man felt about what he was saying. At the end of the spiel, he returned the rider’s smile. “No, it’s all right. I think my gut feeling was right this time.” He nodded again at his own conclusions. “Yes, I really think it was right. Miss Raena seemed to think… Well, forgive me for saying so, but I find it hard to picture you as being as pompous as she made you out to be. Your ambition is admirable, in my opinion, and we could use a dedicated leader.”

He seemed to perk a little then, the smile widening. “That girl, Emori – we talked about her, too. Apparently, there’s another rumor…” Boy, he was talkative today. Nandeli’s enthusiasm must have rubbed off on him.

Perhaps it was the result of so many new Weyrlings, but he felt as though he'd unexpectedly become the topic of gossip, and that was... interesting. Part of it he'd managed, to his releif, to apparently difuse, though he was really going to have to speak to someone about what the woman had been doing, though since it obviously hadn't been of as pressing concern as Raena's assault, he was fairly sure this gossip was probably nothing much.
"I do appreciate the vote of confidence." He noted, shoulders sinking slightly with releif. "Sounds as though you had quite a conversation. What about her?"
PostPosted: Sun Apr 05, 2009 4:51 pm

Well, that was a bit of a disappointment. It seemed S’kagi wasn’t as aware of his apparent connection with that girl as he was with Raena. That alone led Kaskel to think this rumor might be a dud. Nandeli would be sad… for about three seconds. “Just a bit of speculation, by a decidedly hopeful romantic,” he chuckled. “My talkative friend seems to think you may be a bit sweet on Miss Emori, or maybe it’s the other way around?”
