Finally!

Alyssum clopped carefully around the outskirts of the forest, her heart light and warm in the mid-day sun and her eyes planted on the ground. Green grass. Bright yellow dandilions, elegant patches of clover with their distinctive white blooms... what she had missed every day of winter with its unending white.

Her tail swished in a creamy wave of pleasure as she craned her neck down, burying her nose within a small patch of flowers. A perfect spot, and well worth the time it had taken to locate it. Now... to just protect it long enough until the entire world could once again be filled with color.

Brioso cantered through the forest, following the light in the distance; if she was correct, that would take her out of the forest! Ever since she had asked to follow her new teacher and master, Grencia, to his herd up in the mountains, they had been passing through the forest for a while now; having grown up in the open fields, Brioso found herself missing the days where she could gallop freely without a tree blocking her way.

The thought of experiencing the thrill of galloping through the fields at full speed again made her smile, and she increased her pace, determined to make full use of the break given to her by Grencia.

As she jumped out of the forest, the filly let out a cheer and stopped, her hoof digging slightly into the ground. With no trees blocking out the sun, it was brighter out in the open, and Brioso blinked, looking down to avoid the sun. As her eyes adjusted themselves, she found herself happily prancing the borders of the forest. Then, she started in a canter, making sure she does not go too far away from the forest.

It was then she realized that there was a mare up ahead, her head to the ground. Curious, Brioso stopped, staring at her for a moment; was she eating the flowers? The foal blinked before going over, a smile on her lips.

"Hello?"

The mare had been so absorbed in smelling the flowers that she hadn't even heard another approach until a greeting reached her ears. Jerking her head up with such force that pollen sprang into the air; some of the golden particles clung to the black tip of her muzzle. When she spotted the navy filly, she felt even sillier for her instant alarm.

Alyssum shook her head to try and clean her face, but also to give herself time to think of what to say. The last time she had meant a young Soquili, they hadn't started off well . Something about his nickname and the different way they looked at things. This time it was going to be different - this time she'd get along with the little one. Maybe if she picked a more flattering name?

With this in mind, she looked the filly over carefully, taking a few moments to settle on the name before she whinned, "Hello, Jewelled Sun. Are you out to see the flowers too?"

"Jewelled... Sun? The filly echoed, blinking with a lost look on her face. She looked around, half-expecting there to be someone that she missed; however, as much as she searched, Brioso was unable to spot anyone. Feeling rather curious, she turned her attention back to the mare, staring quizzically at her. Narrowing her eyes slightly, she flicked her tail, wondering if this mare has an imaginary friend of sorts...

That would explain why she was looking at her when she called for this 'Jewelled Sun'; perhaps she imagined this 'friend' to be behind her.

Trying to dismiss it, the filly gave her 'trademark' grin, straightening up as she stuck out her chest, "The name is Brioso! Its nice to meet you... Um..." Her grin wavered as she let out a light chuckle, bowing her head slightly. Then, she looked up with an apologetic smile and a nervous grin, tilting her head.

"Sorry, but I seem to have forgotten to ask for your name."

"Brioso." Alyssum repeated, her ears swivveling towards the younger Soquili as she considered it. Three syllabelles. A nice echoing of the vowel sounds, but with a certain brightness. It matched the little one's smile and elaborate markings, so much so that it brought a bright smile to the mare's muzzle. "I'm Alyssum. Like the flower. Does Brioso have a meaning too? It's a nice name. Strong."

Lifting her head up to better relish the sunshine, she nevertheless kept her purple eyes on the navy foal. She didn't want to be impolite or aloof... but it was just such a lovely day, and she hadnt seen one in so long! Breeze, sunshine, flowers, and a potential friend. "Are you happy that all the snowy days will be gone soon?"

"My name's meaning?" The filly blinked, tossing her head as she tried to recall if her parents said anything; she closed her eyes, deep in thought. After a moment, she opened her eyes and shook her head slowly, "Don't really think there is one..." Then, she reduced the distance between herself and Alyssum, trotting a little closer before giving a curious smile, "Alyssum... Is that the name of a flower?

At the next question, Brioso found herself staring at the mare; that word sounded like 'snow'... She had heard it from a colt before! She shook her head again, "I think I came out of my basket after this 'snow' disappeared... I've not seen it before. My friend said that snow is like water that is solid?"

Alyssum nodded in understanding - a lack of meaning to their names seemed to b a common problem among the Soquili she met. It wasn't a bad thing, or at least not as devastating an idea as her original encounter with it was.

"Yes, a large white flower. Very pretty, very hearty," the mare explained matter-of-factly, not pig-headed or boastful but confident in the verity of her statement. "I'm not sure any are growing right now or I'd show you... but there are tons of other pretty flowers! I've missed them... they all went away when the snow came."

The smile on her muzzle deepend as she whinnied, "I cam out of my basket when there wasn't any snow either! This is what I'm used to, and I like it much better. Snow... hm... snow is..." She frowned in thought, her cream tail swishing slowly. Frozen water? That was solid? That didn't sound like 'snow'... that sounded like 'ice.' But snow was cold and wet. Like ice. Maybe snow was tiny bits of ice? "I'm... not sure if it's solid water. I've never thought about it, really."

Then, an idea struck her, and she turned her purple eyes towards the foal, excitement evident on her face, "But I can show you what it's like, sort of? There's a stream close by that's really cold, and walking through it is sort of like walking through snow. Just... less crunchy. You want to see?"

"The name is pretty too... It suits the flower and you." Brioso nodded, commenting when Alyssum described the flower she was named after. Her smile widened slightly as she examined the mare again, this time taking in the way she spoke; she has a rather gentle sort of aura, Brioso thought to herself with a soft chuckle. It sort of reminded her of her younger sister; after all, she was often told that her sister was the mildest of the three siblings.

At the possibility of experiencing briefly what 'snow' is like before she visits Grencia's herd, the foal's eyes widened with excitement and she nodded so violently that her whole body shook. Then, she let out a cheer, her head still bobbing up and down, "Yes please!"

When she finally stopped nodding and regained her composure, Brioso gave her 'trademark' grin, bowing her head once before looking up, "Thank you very much, Alyssum! I owe you one!"

Alyssum chuffed approvingly. This little one showed a good grip on reality and was far easier to get along with than Flamey. Besides, she liked her; the way she eagerly accepted adventure reminded her of herself at that age. Or would have, if she had been thinking about it.

Instead she led the other Soquili towards the water, her black hooves crunching through the emerging brush as they traveled through the shade of the trees. Her ears curved to catch the twitter of birds and the faint hum of insects, waiting for the distinctive gush of the stream.

What she heard, however, was a strange shuffling sound, one that made her pause in her tracks and peer ahead of her. A huff escaped her mouth as she saw a small shadow walking steadily against the base of the tree. What on Gaia was that? And... why was it walking against a tree.

She immediatly started forward to investigate further, calling back to the foal, "Hold on a second... I want to see this."

Brioso had followed willingly, eager to experience what snow is like even if it wasn't that close to the real thing... Was it as cold as Lamb and Alyssum had described? She grinned uncontrollably in excitement, her tail swishing behind her as she walked. However, when Alyssum headed off to investigate something, the filly had followed as well, curious as to what could have possibly caught the mare's attention.

"Sure... I'm coming too!" She replied, hoping that Alyssum won't mind her tagging along; after all, she just can't stay still for long.

Getting closer was no help; the mare had never seen a creature like this. Short and squat, it seemed to be able to draw its legs and head into itself, as it quickly did whenever she slowed her gallop when she came up beside it. Now, instead of an animal, it looked sort of like a big nut, only with a far more elaborate shell. Whorls of brown and black splashed across the surface, and a quick check with her nose revealed that it was hard.

A curious thing. Alyssum tilted her head as it stretched out its leathery neck and, deciding she was no longer a threat, continued to walk against the tree trunk, despite the tough bark and the fact that it wasn't getting anywhere. It would not turn, it would not so much as swivel, just move its legs slowly and struggle to go forward.

She turned back to face the following Brioso, her tone obviously troubled, "Do you think it wants to be stuck like this? It doesn't stop, but it isn't going anywhere either."
PostPosted: Wed Apr 15, 2009 9:13 am

Brioso blinked at the creature, her eyes widening as she lowered her head to take a closer look; did its head just go into its body? Its arms and legs too? She lifted her head, looking both shocked and awed at what the creature was able to do. She stood there, gawking at the discovery of such a strange creature... That was, until Alyssum's voice broke her train of thought.

"Well," The filly spoke hesitantly, her eyes never leaving the creature they found, "I'm not very sure... It could be something it likes to do? A ritual? Or... Or maybe it needs help?" She ended hopefully, almost like she was looking to help if it was needed.

Likes to do? Alyssum snorted, huffing warm breath along the thick shell that covered the reptile's back. How could it possibly like walking forever in one place? It could never explore or rest or eat or... or do anything truly fun! As for it being a 'ritual'... well, it might be that; she wasn't exactly sure what a 'ritual' was, afterall. But from the sound of it, it didn't sound too pleasant.

She gave a toss of her creamy mane as she reached a decision. Only one suggestion Brioso offered made any sense. The poor creature had to need help. Stretching her neck out, she bumped the waddling shell to the left, trying to scoot it away from the tree and still keep it (somewhat) in the direction it seemed to want to go in, towards the soothing sounds of the stream.

"Sorry, Brioso this'll only take a second; I can't just leave him here. He could be stuck forever!"
PostPosted: Sun Apr 26, 2009 7:39 am

{Sorry for late reply! x.x}

Brioso blinked, giving a quick nod and a small smile, "I'm not really in a rush, and helping others is more important!" She knows that Grencia will understand why she's late, if its because someone needed her aid. She trotted over to stand beside the mare, her eyes fixed on the creature under the tree.

When Alyssum had tried to push the creature, something clicked in the filly's mind and her eyes widened; the creature only wobbled, its feet slightly off the ground! Now that she had taken a closer look, it does look like it was trying to push against the tree to flip itself over... To be upright, maybe? She lowered her head so that she was on the creature's eye-level, and gave a gentle push in the tree's direction.

Maybe if its legs could touch the tree, it can push itself against the trunk and flip over!

[No problem, Dragain! I apolgoize for my tardy reply as well - things have been busy.]

The older mare appreciated the assistance from the smaller Soquili; try as she might, she could not nudge the rough-skinned creature without fear of hurting it. Brioso, however, with her smaller muzzle had increased manveurability, and Alyssum happily allowed her to nudge the tiny animal towards the tree. After a few moments of wobbling, two of the stubby legs rested against the sturdy tree, allowing the brown mare to inch him closer and closer to the left, A little further... a little... further... success!

The creature's legs scraped against the tree before they fell to the ground, and without even so much as a glance back, the stoic beast continued to waddle forward towards the sound of the running water, slowly but surely. Alyssu threw her head back in triumph, whinnying happily, "We did it, Brioso! We did it!
