The sun had already set, and Yakasa was now walking on cool grass instead of hot. It soothed his swollen paws and put the adolescent in a better mood. The sun was very important, but the night was much nicer.

The male had been traveling for days in search of the place he used to belong. He hadn't seen his mother or sister in a long time since he left, but he felt them nearby. Somehow, he sensed them. So he kept going.

Night dragged on and the moon was rising higher. Yakasa's green eyes were half-lidded with sleepiness, but he kept walking. He was a determined male, and he wouldn't stop until he found what he was searching for.

What he didn't know was that what he was searching for was already right under his feet.

Guard duty didn't seem so bad. If his father had never taken over the colony, Mkorogo probably would have been destined to be one, anyway. The leopard was rather defensive on his own, but pride mixed in only added to it. Especially with Kohpi...

Climbing up into a tree, he took advantage of his leopard heritage. There was no vantage point better in his mind. As he watched the area, he noticed a shadowy form moving closer, marked with fire on the back. Tilting his head, he smiled just a bit. Well, what did we have here?

Draping on the branch in just the right manner, he waited for the lion to get closer, planning on dropping right in front of him. If anything, it would startle him and let him know somebody lived here.

The moon lit up the trees and cast long shadows across the grass and over Yakasa. They made strange shapes against rocks and sparse bushes. They made the land look strange and unfamiliar. The male really had no idea where he was. He was tired and wanted to sleep. Why did things have to be so complicated?

Up ahead, there was a large tree with thick branches jutting out. Something about the tree sparked a memory in the lion...But he shrugged it off. There was no way he knew that tree, right? Nah. Huh, what was that...? A bulge in one of the branches? Was it some kind of strange bunch of fruits? Yakasa squinted and slowed his pace, inching closer and closer. Despite having grown up quite a bit, the male hadn't grown out of his curious nature...

No one ever told Yakasa that curiosity killed the cat.

Dropping down, Mkorogo landed with all the grace born to a leopard. As he regained his composure, he looked up at the lion, eyes glowing in the moonlight. "And what have we here...? Somebody slipping into the Matembezi lands in the dark of night?" He tilted his head, watching the lion. While he was relaxed, he was also ready in case things turned ugly.

Yakasa started, stumbling back a moment as a gasp ripped from his lungs. He recovered fairly quickly, claws unfurling as he assessed the situation, trying to decide whether things would turn sour. He gave the male in front of him a once-over. This was a leopard, and a nimble one at that. He would be a strong adversary, but Yakasa didn't want it to come to that. He liked to protect people, not fight them. Besides, he was only looking for his home and his family. He'd just...Be on his way--

...Wait...

"Did you say...Matembezi?" the adolescent asked breathlessly.

"I did." He inclined his head a bit, watching the adolescent. Oh, yes, he'd never formally met this lion, but he'd heard about him... "You seem familiar... Would your mother happen to be a lioness named Kabichi?" Then again, he could be wrong about who he thought it was. He did that now and then, once with a bird...

Jaw dropping and ears folding, Yakasa stared, not believe his own ears.

This leopard...Knew his mother? That must've meant...

Could it be that he was...Already home?

"Yes!" the adol said determinedly, eyes sparking with hope. He stared seriously at the other male, gaze wavering over his face. Yakasa squinted through the darkness, trying to see the other better, to see if he knew him. He swallowed dryly, taking a couple of hesitant steps forward, perhaps trying to show that he wasn't a threat. "You know my mother?" he asked, heart pounding. "Where is she?"

Nodding toward the center of the pride, Mkorogo couldn't help but smirk just a bit. "That way. But you MIGHT have to go through a few lions." He was lying, of course. Anybody who'd seen any of Kabichi's children before would know right off that it was a lion to trust. Turning and padding towards the pride's center, the leopard looked back to the adol. "So, where have you been hiding, anyway? And yes... I know your mother... And your aunt... And three uncles... And your grandmother... And your great-grandfather..." He paused, ears moving back. "Damn but I've gotten myself into a big family..."

WHAT?!

He was HOME?!

Yakasa allowed a stunned smile of relief to flicker onto his face. He sighed, lowering his determined stance and letting himself relax a bit. This leopard was family, after all. At least, that's what he said.

BUT WHO CARED? He was finally home!

"Where have I been hiding?" Yakasa repeated, confused by the strange question. Well, this leopard didn't really know him, so it was okay. "I've been training. I got into a bit of trouble a while back..." he murmured, eyes clouding over. But he shook it off. "So I left to train for a while." He'd grown stronger in the time he had been gone. But now it was time to return to his family; his home. He would help to protect everyone.

"Sorry to...Seem rushed," Yakasa began clumsily, not wanting to seem rude. "but would you take me to my family?" he asked, offering a friendly smile.

The leopard paused, ears going back for a moment. When he looked back, an eyebrow had gone up. "And just what did you think I've been doing? Leading you into the middle of a wasteland?" He moved a branch aside, revealing a path directly to the dens. "It's this way. Believe me... The family's gotten big. Very big." And it was only going to get bigger. Much bigger.

WH--

...DUH. Of course. Why hadn't he realized it sooner? This leopard was his--...What was he? Well, part of his family now. And that was all that mattered.

"Ah, thank you." Yakasa said awkwardly.

Darn him and his clueless moments. Maybe he really was naive? Even after all that time out on his own, growing stronger...

Physically shaking his downer thoughts aside, blue-streaked mane whipping about his face, the adolescent sighed and trotted beside the leopard. He pointed his nose to the path the leopard revealed, heart skipping a beat as he squinted through the darkness. So many familiar things...His family must've grown, just like the leopard said. He was close to home. He could feel it.

Soon he'd be home.

Letting out a bit of a grunt, Mkorogo pushed past a clump of bushes. He vanished for a moment, before poking his head back out. "Come around the bushes here." His head vanished back into the shrubbery, and he could be heard calling the pride. After a moment, he poked back. "Oh, and... Welcome home... Er... Nephew..." It felt strange using such a word, but... He had four of those now, didn't he? Or... More... Just how many Kohpi's older brothers had had, he didn't know, but he'd at least led her sister's offspring home.

Yakasa followed the leopard past the bushes eagerly, scrambling to avoid getting scratched by the twigs. He still couldn't believe he was back. It felt like he had left so long ago. He didn't regret leaving, but he had missed home so much. His family, the smells, the sights; everything.

Wait, "nephew"?! His uncle was a leopard?

That was so much he had missed out on. But Yakasa grinned. There would be plenty of time to catch up on things now.

The adol finally stumbled out of the bushes and into the open, heart pounding with anticipation. And there it was. His home. He saw so many familiar figures in the distance, many of them coming towards him. All of his past memories came flooding back to him, and he felt some missing piece inside of him come back.

He was home.
