The sight of a girl walking down the streets of Gambino is not actually a surprising one. But this girl was carrying a bucket of fish in one hand and had a pair of leather gloves (a bit big for her) sticking out of the pocket of her jean cut offs. She was barefoot, and sun tanned to the extreme, showing that "outside" was her natural state of being.
But she had a pirate's hat (far too large for her) on her head, which seemed to make her stick out far more than the bucket and gloves did. She was whistling, or at least, attempting to, as she walked.

Joshua had caught sight of Polly, and had been fascinated. Though, that was a fairly normal state of mind for the boy. He had never seen a girl like her before. He was slightly concerned about her because it was spring, and she was wearing a summer outfit.. but, who was he to say anything? What was she doing with the fish? He was curious.
He walked over to her, and gave her a bright smile. "Hi, I'm Josh." He said cheerfully. "What are you doing?"

She looked at him, wondering how it was not obvious what she was doing. "I'm going fishing," she told him finally, moving on. There was a rope wrapped several times around her waist that had blended with her brown shirt until one got closer.
The funny thing about Polly, now that she was older, was that she never, ever got cold. Even on the coldest day of the year she was warm enough to run around in shorts and tank tops. And did. Frequently.

"Fishing?" Joshua repeated, surprised. She certainly didn't look like she was going fishing. Where was her fishing pole? He supposed the fish could be considered bait. Was she trying to catch a really big fish? Like a shark? Is that why she had the rope?
"What kind of fishing?" He asked, keeping up with her.

"Gator fishing," she told him, not thinking of how that would be thought of by non-pirates. "I want to get my Dad a present," she added with a wide grin. "He'll love a pet!"
She kept heading for the nearby swamp like area that was a bit further inland from the ocean. This would be the perfect time to get a gator, since they would be sleepy from the colder water. Or at least, she hoped.

Gator fishing? That automatically made her cool. Even if he had never heard of it, it sounded like something only a cool person would do. "Hey, what's your name?" He asked, still trying to keep up with her.
"And why would your dad want a gator for a pet?" He asked. She was lucky. His dad didn't even like cats.

"Polly," she said. "And my Dad IS a gator, so I figure he would like to have one." She stepped into the trees, stepping onto a fallen log and looking around thoughtfully before turning slightly to the left and going on.
It seemed like a different world, here, with the grass growing well past their knees and a muggy, clammy feel that seemed to suck at you. It smelled, too, but she didn't seem to notice.

Josh didn't like it. He didn't like the smell. He didn't like the mud. He didn't like the clammy cold feeling that was sending shivers up his spine. He did like the frogs, but they weren't out yet. He caught sight of a few birds in the grass.
"Your dad's a gator?" He repeated. Wow, he'd never even seen one before. "Do you have any sisters or brothers?" He asked.

"Cousins," she said. "Austin and Kaeden. They're pirates, too," she added, sneaking closer to the water as she unwound her rope. There was a loop at the end, already tied.
"Shhh," she said, glancing at him once before starting to set up her trap. The important thing was to get the gator's mouth tied closed. Otherwise it would be too dangerous.
She tossed a fish into the water.

Joshua nodded and watched. Wait, she was a pirate? That made her even cooler! He had only pretended to be a pirate--with Kaimi, Nataya and Bishop. And now he had met a real one! He couldn't wait to tell his friends.
"Do you ever find treasure?" He whispered. He knew he should be quiet, and wait for a gator to come get the fish, but he was dying to know.

"Sometimes," she said quietly, tossing another fish into the water to lure a gator to them. "On the island. Haven't found any here."
Something bobbed to the surface in the water and a wicked grin crept over her face. "Got one."

Joshua was fascinated. So there was real treasure. He and Bishop would have to go looking sometime. "That's a gator?" He asked, looking at the creature curiously. It wasn't very big. He'd expected something....
Bigger. "Is that a baby gator, or something?" He asked. Of course, he supposed it could have been a full grown one. He'd never seen one before.

"No," she said, her hand moving to the rope. "That's just his head."
Sure enough, a larger thing bobbed up behind the first, a gigantic back, covered with bumps and gleaming in the faint light of the swamp. "Think he's too bi--"
The gator's eyes turned, finding them with a cold, reptilian look of anticipation. To someone that liked heat, Polly stood out like the sun.
Another head bobbed to the surface, no more than three feet from the first, and they could see its tail flicking back and forth, propelling it forward.

Josh froze. What he had thought was a baby gator had become a giant, swimming lizard. He took Polly's hand. "Come on!" He hissed. "We have to get away, these won't make good pets! They look hungry!" The boy had no desire to become anyone's lunch.
He started to go in the other direction, before another blocked him. "Polly, do pirates know how to escape from hungry gators?" He asked, hopefully.

"Why should I escape?" she asked blankly. "I'm trying to catch one! It's not like a shark or somethin!" she added. Sharks had scared her, but gators weren't that big a deal. At least, they didn't seem to be one to her. "But you can go," she added graciously before grabbing her rope tight and stepping forward.
"Here, gator gator," she said, grabbing another fish. "Want a snack?"
