So I'm wondering, whats the difference between Steampunk and Clockpunk? I did some research and apparently Clockpunk is a sub-genre of Steampunk and rather then steam power it focuses on clockwork mechanics. But...that sounds like Steampunk to me. Steampunk isn't always about steam, alot of the time it focuses on clockworks too. So I really don't get the difference.
I'm posting this for discussion on the topic, speculation and hopefully to get an answer (assuming one exists, there may be no difference XP) And I thought some more knowledgeable Steamies in the guild could help. Thank you

Hm, I have to admit I don't really get you - one day you say Magic doesn't fit into the genre because there's no Steampunk without steam - and next you post that you don't understand the difference between Clockpunk and Steampunk because the latter isn't always about steam? xp
I'd say it's like with most sub genres: they are similar to their parent genre, but there are additional elements (or elements missing) that justify a distinctive genre.
Take away a bit (or all) of the steam and add clockworks to get Clockpunk (most of the time there's still steam involved, though). Take away a bit (or all) of the steam and add magic to get Steamfantasy (though I'm always inclined to not call it Steamfantasy once you took away ALL the steam - but that's just a personal preference). Replace the steam with smoke and add gas to get Dieselpunk.

By "steam" I meant steampunk things, like steam engines, clockwork, leather and brass, etc. And I dident say magic dosent fit in with it, its just I prefer clockwork stuff over magic. I still enjoy having it though. I was just making an argument for my case XD And yea, I was unaware there where so many sub genres. I'd have considered Steamfantasy more like a LARP thing and Dieselpunk to be closer to Industrial or something

xd just admit you're a normal person and biased and be done... it'll allow you to have your personal hypocrisies without feeling you have to defend them. wink That being said, who the heck decided that clockpunk had to spin off from steampunk? they work well together if we over divide our subculture we'll turn into goths and start nit-picking at eachother even more than we already do.

Alright, I admit it. I have "save the trees" and "Hang up and DRIVE" bumperstickers and I go home to my log cabin after talking on the cellphone whal driving on the freeway all day. I also am a vegetarian and I hunt my own meat. (i'm jk XD) But yes, I agree, I was (and still am somewhat) goth. TRUE goth is not like that, but since places like Hot-Frickin-Topic opened and brought goth into the mainstream its been filled with wannabes, mallgoths and everything else. So really the word goth has no meaning anymore. Its become synonymous with devil worship and people who "non-conform" by buying this months must have goth pants at hot topic and looking just like their friends. Thats why I went steampunk. P.S. Wikipedia says its an offshoot of steampunk, so knowing nothing myself thats what I was going by. Thats also why I made this thread, to find out from you guys

I seriously have never heard of clockpunk. I always considered everything that had the same feel as steampunk to be steampunk.

Sounds overly nitpicky to me. o.o Its the cogs and gears that fascinate me, not the steam engines- but they go hand in hand, so I love both. I mean, the steam engine propels the gears and cogs to turn (sometimes), the exeption being crank-engines, I guess...Tell the truth, I know little of mechanics. I just like the way it moves. Enjoy watching it. XD
But my point is there, right?

Short answer: clockpunk is set 100 years before steampunk--think powdered wigs and tricorne hats.
