There's an excellent article up at RHRealityCheck today.
Looking for Common Ground on Abortion? You're Standing On It by Jodi Jacobson
It's sort of a long read, but well worth it. As other articles at RHRelityCheck and posters at this guild have done before, this article argues that the pro-choice side really is the "common ground" side and that conservatives calling for abortion reduction are actually not doing anything to help (their goal is to further stigmatize abortion, not to reduce unintended pregnancy). I agree wholeheartedly. We allow people to make moral and ethical decisions for themselves and encourage governments and individuals to look at the facts. As the bumper sticker goes, "If you don't like abortion, don't have one."
However, I've seen a lot of pro-lifers get upset by this argument, and understandably so. This idea of common ground does essentially say that their side is wrong and that they should "give up". What do you think about this? I'm kind of skeptical about the idea of common ground because I think that the pro-life and pro-choice sides are incompatible: either abortion is illegal or it is legal. Then again, I still strongly believe that the more fair, reality-based thing to do is to let people make the decision for themselves and that the alternative is nothing less than an atrocious violation of women's rights and human rights in general.
