The forest. A place of mystery. Each step could lead you closer to a friendly welcome or else bring you straight into a world made up of nightmares. The morning wind blew the budding branches of the trees and the entire forest seemed to be dancing. Standing a few feet away from the trees with his back to the plains stood Lamb. His dark coat stood out in the light of the sunrise but being seen was not a concern he had.
No, right now the only thing on his mind was how the trees had gone from bare branches to having tiny leaves and sometimes flowers covering them. He flicked his feline like tail a few times. Studying the plants from the ground was not providing him with any useful information. So without a second thought he stepped right up next to a tree and reared back. His front hooves landed on the tree and used it for support.
His brilliant idea to get closer seemed less when he realized he was still far to short to see anything. If only he had been born with his sister's wings. "Or if I were taller...or the tree was shorter..." His grumbling suddenly left him with another idea. He could find a shorter tree! There had to be one somewhere, but where?

She wasn't lost; just currently misplaced.
That was probably something her father would say with a laugh, she thought. Her adventures had landed her in a forest, but she could see the plains peeking out from the small clearings between the trees bordering the forest. It was rather exciting... She was always on the plains; it was the first time she had actually ventured into the forest.
"Brioso, heroine-in-training, is now misplaced in a forest." The female said to herself, her eyes scanning the area surrounding her. Narrowing her eyes a little, she saw someone leaping up onto a tree by the edge, and she slowly approached, eyes fixed on the mysterious tree-climbing figure, "Although it seemed quiet at first, a suspicious person had appeared! Being fearless, the heroine-in-training goes closer. Could he be stuck and need help?"
The idea made her excited, for she had never actually saved anyone before, and she quickly went over, looking up at the dark colored male in the tree. Grinning, she called out to him, "Hey there! Do you need my help getting down?"

A black ear twitched and he paused his failing attempt at investigating. He could hear something coming his way. Something that was talking. His eye brows knit together in mild confusion but he returned to what he was doing at least for the moment. When the voice reached him again he was a bit shocked at the proximity. Dark pink eyes went wide as he wobbled a little but with a flick of his tail he managed to keep his balance.
Down? His eyes wandered over the others face and then to his hind legs. His hooves were firmly planted on a root and while it was off the ground the drop was not exactly anything he had to worry over. Did it look like he was high up? Blinking a few times at the other he finally shook his head. Silently he lowered his front legs to the root and then hopped off the root to the ground. He bowed his head a little with a small smile then straightened.
The one ahead of him was quite interesting. Almost as much as the tree itself. Without a word he stepped closer to her and began to circle her. His eyes scanned over the celestial patterns on her dark coat and then looked over her light mane. He took particular interest in the sun. Could a sun smile? He didn't know. Frowning slightly at this he took a few steps backwards somewhat satisfied with his investigation. While it had only really led to more questions it had also successfully answered a few. This person was a horse, female, and had no odd appendages like his mother. This person was not a threat. How wonderful. He smiled lightly at her letting his eyes shut cheerfully.

"Aw, I was hoping you'll need help," The female pouted slightly, observing the male as he in turn, observed her. Now that he was close up, she realized that he had a weird tail, something she had never seen before... Was it even normal to have a tail like that? Her thoughts were soon disrupted, however, at the other foal's smile. In return, she flashed him a 'heroine-to-be' grin. Of course, it was just a normal grin that she had decided to name.
After all, a heroine needs to have a trademark smile!
Pausing, she tilted her head a little to the side, before looking at the tree the other foal was 'climbing'. Was it an evil tree? Was that the reason he was trying to scale it? Questions flooded her mind, but she filtered out the most important one.
"I'm Brioso, a heroine-in-training!" The frilly announced proudly, flicking her tail as she leaned in towards the dark colored male with curious eyes, blinking as she tried to ignore the other questions in her head. Nodding, more to herself than to the other, she smiled, "What is your name?"

Had he heard that right? She was hoping he would need help? Meaning she was hoping he was in trouble? He opened his eyes and found her smiling at him. No harm meant, or so he could assume. He would have to watch his back with her around. It didn't seem likely that she would lead him purposefully into danger, but one could never be too sure.
Brioso. He committed the name to his memory along with a few facts and assumptions about her. She now had her own file of sorts. For a moment he simply watched as she leaned forward. Then mimicking her behavior he flicked his tail and answered as simply as he could, "Lamb." He nodded his head once.
One of many words he was not. While he did have a rather large vocabulary for one his age he chose not to speak in most instances. Silence made it much easier to absorb information and after all. First meetings were one of those times where collecting data was crucial. Though, ordinarily he wouldn't have spoken at all. Ordinarily he would have remained at a distance and observed. She had come over and he couldn't bring himself to being rude.

"Lamb," She repeated in a whisper; saying things out loud helped her remember better, and she often finds herself repeating things to herself for the sake of memorizing them. Giving her 'trademark' grin again, Brioso turned her head to face the tree, gesturing to it with a nod of her head. Then, she turned back to Lamb, "Was there something wrong with this tree? Since you were climbing it earlier... Perhaps I could help you?"
She gave him a hopeful look; she believed that by doing good deeds frequently, she would eventually be hailed as a true heroine. It was an aspiration of sorts, and she will achieve it one day... Starting from now. No task is too big or too small of her!

The tree? He raised an eyebrow and looked over his shoulder at the large trunk. Was something wrong with it? He didn't know. The tree seemed alright but he could not be sure. He tilted his head to the side and pursed his lips together in thought. After a moments contemplation he turned back to Brioso and gave her a very serious look.
"I need to find a shorter tree to better understand what is going on with this one." He said quietly in a somewhat monotonous voice. There were some things in life that were too bizarre to communicate without the use of words. This was one of those things. He did not know many who went around simply investigating the wonders of the world thus what he did was strange.
He fell silent once again just looking at the filly expectantly. She wanted to help him, telling him where such a tree was would be a large help. That or he supposed he could use her to get a boost in to the tree somehow. It seemed pretty clear to him that that would end with one or both of them injured. Injury was not a good motivation for him.

So there was something wrong with the tree! Or rather, could be something wrong; either way, it sounds like a great excuse for adventure and to find out more about the world. She turned around, examining the tree again, wondering if she could actually help in Lamb's quest to find a shorter tree.
"Well, now that you mentioned it..."
Brioso frowned slightly, thinking back to when she was trekking through the forest. Although most of the trees in the forest were much taller and larger than the one found at the edge, there were a few shorter trees; there was even one that was so short, she could almost reach its lower branches... After all, she had wanted to feel tall and had tried reaching out for it.
Turning her attention back to Lamb, the female grinned, "There was a short tree in the forest, where it was darker due to the taller trees blocking out the sun. It was back the way I came... Do you think it'll help?" She paused, blinking at the male.

Now that he mentioned it? He leaned forward a fraction of an inch with his eyebrows raised inquisitively. Her attention didn't seem to be on him for the moment which led him to think that she was remembering something. He straightened back up and waited until she returned to him in a manner of speaking.
When she did he smiled and nodded enthusiastically. This was perfect, she did know of a little tree after all. He could investigate that little one and figure out a thing or two about the rest of them hopefully. With a flick of his tail he marched past the celestial filly and into the forest a little ways.
His pink eyes darted about as if he expected to see the tree from where he was standing. He could not so he looked over his shoulder and tilted his head to the side, his eyes flicking to the right and then the left trying to ask the way without speaking. Not sure how quickly she would pick up on this, if she did at all, he decided it would be best to stand there patiently until he received some clue that she had it or didn't. So very much like a statue he froze. Only his tail moved, swishing from side to side like a metronome.

This foal sure is strange, Brioso found herself thinking as she followed him a little further into the forest and away from the edge, surprised by his sudden enthusiasm. Frowning slightly, she wondered for a moment why he was looking at her like that; isn't it rather uncomfortable to stand with your neck facing backward like that?
"Oh, you want to know where it is!" She suddenly exclaimed, her body straightening up as she let out a light chuckle. Shaking her head, she looked questioningly at Lamb, "Why didn't you just say so?"
However, instead of waiting for his immediate answer, the filly went ahead, deeper into the forest where it was slightly darker. Turning her head, she gestured for him to follow, giving him her 'trademark' grin again as she quickened her pace; the faster she reach the short tree, the faster she'll feel like she actually helped him.

She got it fairly quickly. With another little smile he nodded once, then shrugged. There was no way to explain to her why he chose not to speak without using words. Trying to do so would only leave him with a headache he was sure. It would be easier to leave her thinking that even he didn't know the reason for his lack of speech. For that, silence was very much the key and he was rather fond of that idea.
As she passed he finally turned his head and found it felt rather stiff. Perhaps from the odd angle he had held it out? Lamb made a note not to freeze with his head in such an uncomfortable position next time. With the note made he trailed after Brioso and found that she was moving quite quickly.
He stopped and watched her for a moment. Was she eager to investigate the tree as well? Somehow he did not think that was the case but he didn't have time to think on it. He was losing his guide! Like he had a fire licking at his rear he took off after her making a surprising amount of racket with his hoof-steps as he clattered over a few rocks and twigs after her.

If Lamb didn't appear to be quiet and less-than-enthusiastic, Brioso would happily have declared it a race. After all, there is no better training for a heroine-in-training than running through the forest at full speed while avoiding all the trees and ducking the low branches in the way. It was fun and thrilling too; she had tried it by herself, sustaining a few bruises along the way, but had fun in the end.
She was sure it'll be even more interesting and enjoyable if it was a race.
"Here we are!" The female stopped rather suddenly at a small clearing surrounded by large, tall trees that tower over the two foals. Only a small amount of sunlight manage to filter in through the canopy, but it was enough for a tree to grow in the clearing. However, as the larger trees are obviously tough competition, this tree was much shorter and smaller.
In fact, as Brioso recalled earlier, its lower branches are almost reachable by her.

When Brioso came to such a sudden stop he found he was not prepared for it. Eyes going wide he stiffened slightly but found that wasn't helping him stop any faster. The distance between them was closing quickly so he dug his hooves into the ground and came skidding to a halt. When he stopped he found he was barely a hair's breadth away from the filly. Taking a quick step backwards he let out a soft, low sigh. That had been a fairly close call. He gave her a puzzled look like he was trying to figure out exactly why she had decided she had to stop so quickly.
He stepped around her and into the little clearing to start his investigation without waiting for her response. He wasn't being rude in his mind. She gave her answers with words anyway, he wasn't making noise, he would hear her quite easily. It wasn't like he was ignoring her. She was useful, why would he ignore her?
Looking at the trees around him his focus began to shift away from his new companion and to the questions that were bouncing around his head. There was, as she had said, a little tree, and it was budding slightly but not nearly as much as the others. "Odd..." He said quietly tilting his head slightly to one side and flicking his tail. Like a panther he crept forward towards the little tree as though he were expecting it be some strange creature that was only masquerading as a tree. He kept at a fair distance simply staring at it like it was either quite dangerous or as though he expected it to start doing tricks. Like before he was standing still as a statue with only his tail swishing about.

Brioso blinked, curious at the way the other foal was acting. However, she decided not to question him; instead, the female simply approached him, standing by his side as she followed his glaze.
"Its a small tree, isn't it?"
The filly's voice was soft, like she didn't wish to disturb anyone who might be around, although she didn't do so consciously - maybe it was because of how quiet the forest is, with only the rustling of the leaves in the wind and the random call of an animal in the distance breaking the silence... Or maybe it was simply just due to Lamb's influence.
Seeing that Lamb was standing still again, Brioso walked forward, approaching the tree. Then, when she was under the tree, they female gestured for the male to follow, giving him a smile.
