Early February, 109

The early morning air was cool and crisp, but the winter cold had lessened and the sun was hidden only slightly behind the few clouds in the sky. Riya sat patiently on Stardust as she waited for the excitement and anxiety of the patrol to die down, dressed in the usual riding uniform with helmet on her head and one hand resting gently on the wolf's harness. Her new Captain cords rested neatly over her chest. A deep growl from the Alpha settled the majority of the wolves and their riders soon followed suit to quiet down as well. The Lieutenant adjusted the paintball rifle strapped over her shoulder and cleared her throat, glancing at the four group leaders before her and then back to the members that had been assigned to each group. Good to see that everyone had arrived on time and had already fallen into formation.

"As you know, the mock battle against New Eve is tomorrow," she announced in a loud but clear voice. The notice had been sent out to everyone a week before and had strictly informed them to step up their personal training in preparation for the mock battle. "The battle against New Eve will be no different than our normal training sessions in the woods, except on a much larger scale with one Patrol against the other. New Eve outnumbers us by a dozen or so, but the battle will be in our territory."

Pausing, Riya looked around to ensure that everyone was paying attention. True that New Eve had a slightly larger number and more experienced wolfriders, especially their commanders, but that was why they decided White Shadow should have the advantage of holding the battle on familiar territory. Numbers meant nothing if New Eve couldn't handle the terrain, but Riya knew that the other Patrol had trained yesterday in their woods. So their own pre-battle training today was even more important.

"Today we will be training as per usual with half the Patrol versus the other half, two groups on the offensive and two groups on the defensive. Before you are the four leaders for today, Alister Shields on Twilight and Mirisua Cisan on Darkwind against myself and Calla Bianchi on WoodWhisp," she gestured towards each of the three riders in front of her as she called their names. Alister and Mirisua's groups had a red vest over their white uniforms and were equipped with red paintballs, while her and Calla's groups were in their normal uniforms and equipped with white paintballs. Riya would be riding with Calla to ensure she could work well with her new patrol members. "Alister and Mirisua's groups will take the offensive, so we'll go out first. My and Calla's groups, who will be taking the defensive, will follow after ten minutes at the bell."

Riya looked up at the tower guard, who nodded in affirmation - he had been instructed to ring the bell ten minutes after the first group left which would signal her group to leave. She glanced back towards the group, deciding to state the rules even though most of them had heard it many times already. "You must aim for the shoulders and below - any accidental shots to the head will not be counted and any intentional aim above the shoulders will result in severe punishment. Any hit to the torso is 3 points and any to a limb is 1 point. But you cannot hit any of the wolves or you will lose 2 points per hit. Friendly fire will cost your group 5 points."

Once everyone had heard her clearly, Riya nodded to Alister and Mirisua as permission for them to leave with their groups now. Stardust moved to stand by WoodWhisp, dropping her Alpha behavior as she always did during training and battle - but a soft rumble from her warned the male that he had better not overstep his boundaries. "Not sure how New Eve ran their drills, but we expect the two groups on the same side to work together," the Lieutenant informed Calla with a small but reassuring smile. "But wait for the offensive groups to leave before we start discussing plans."

The black wolf was bouncing, bouncing in glee under Alister and the man huffed tightening his grip on Twilight's harness a silent warning that the wolf needed to calm down. Of course such a warnig was lost on the female as she continued bouncing from foot to foot until a growl from Stardust stilled her. Normally if it hadn't been for the fact that the wolf got unusually hyper at the start of drills and battles he would have simply dismissed it as a fit of feminine hormones.

Dismissing the wolf's bouncing and general attitude, Alister instead focused on what was being said, adjusting the rifle on his shoulder on occasion. A mock battle between the forts, but right now there was to be a drill. Team leader was perfectly fine with him, the problem was just who he'd been partnered with.

A soft snorting laugh drifted through the back of his mind from the wolf, and he huffed at her again.

Maybe she'll be able to temper you and your impulses. A wicked grin crossed the wolf's face as she flicked her tail, glancing over her shoulder at her rider before dipping her head in respect to the passing alpha.

Giving a soft rumbling growl of mild amusement Twilight didn't even bother trying to sift through the mild series of....annoyed curses letting her paws lead her through the open gate at a slight trot. Paintball battles were always amusing with an added person this would prove to be highly amusing.

Kill the temptation to toss her off, Alister~ A huff was the only answer she received and a lithing laugh was the only answer she gave.

((Journal))

Normally quite fastidious about his appearance, Evrian's first inclination had been to side with the "Red" team, who had received extra vests to wear over their uniforms for differentiation. But when he'd learned that Alister was to be on that team - leading one of the groups, in fact - the young man had opted to deal with the possibility for red paint on a white uniform rather than be in such close proximity to him. He sat atop his dark red wolf partner beside Calla and WoodWhisp now, tension coursing through his muscles. The way Alister had looked at him the other day, he wasn't sure if the other man wouldn't chance the deduction for a head shot - or worse yet, a shot to Cinderfrost. He had to admit, sniping the golden boy in the head did have some appeal, but he'd never go so far to make a stab at the man through his wolf; he held the creatures in too high of a regard. He had nothing against Twilight, just her rider. And he still hadn't quite pinpointed the core of his dislike for the other man; it couldn't be that they just had similar "pasttimes" where young women were concerned. That would make him a hypocrite.

Her rider's tension translating through his legs to her back, Cinderfrost tipped her head up and to the side to get a better look at him. She already knew what had him so worked up, even though he was careful to keep his gaze away from the source. Sighing inwardly, she turned her attention back to the imminent exercise. You know, I hope the two of you manage to blow off some of this toxicity between you with this little bout. Without too much collateral damage.

Evrian smirked wryly, his fingers stroking behind the she-wolf's right ear. A response wasn't necessary, both of them knew he would "behave" himself during the exercise. And always; his control was as fastidious as his appearance. He hoped...

Kib Watts

Kib remained mounted on Razzledrop, emerald green eyes focused on the current commanding officer, Riya. Listening as she spoke, for every word she would be saying right now would be very crucial to their battle. It was true New Eve certainly had far more experienced soldiers but that wouldn't stop him from performing to the best he could. Rolling his shoulders to alleviate some of the pain in his right shoulder from stressing his muscles from training, Kib gripped the harness on Razzledrop tighter.

He had been placed on Riya's team for this particular training session, not that it bothered him more like, encouraged him. This would give him a great way to test his abilities with teamwork, something he had been lacking at training the past days. As he and Raz had been far more focused on speed and agility than on working with others. Something that if confronted would not be proud to admit having neglected. "We are going to have to try very hard on teamwork my friend." Patting his companions side he rose his head once again to make sure he wasn't missing anything being said.

Low grumbling rolled from Razzledrop as he flicked his ears back and forth in an attempt to count the number of wolves and riders around him. Moving both Kib and himself tentatively closer to Stardust and Woodwhisp waiting his instructions and battle plan from them he could feel Kib's excitement for the battle feeding his own eagerness. Yes, your right we will have to work on that part during this session and hope we don't fail because of our own stupidity. Though it almost sounded like a chuckle from the rather large wolf his paws crunching the layer of snow beneath his feet as he continued to make his way towards Riya and Stardust. Let the wind not fail us this day

Chehero Asakaur

Tightening the elastic band that held her hair back in the clean ponytail, Chehero tilted her head to the side watching with anticipation. This was the start of her second year as a wolfrider and one she hoped would be a strong learning time for her. Her first year had been rather odd, with half the year spent learning how to ride her rather clumsy footed companion. Chuckling at the reminder she waited for Riya to finish speaking, while thumbing her red vest absentmindedly. Chehero was rather pleased to know that the battle would actually be taking place in their territory. This she hoped would give their team the advantage however, being rather new against so many experienced fighters only seemed to overwhelm her.

Electric pink eyes scanning the none vested side she continued to feel intimidated. Even that side had quite a few experienced fighters there as well, not to mention their lieutenant. She had been placed on Mirisua's team, rather oddly she was a little grateful. Raising her hand to brush along Feathermists fur she found the harness and mounted with little ease. This only seemed to be the hardest part of battle for her, mounting her wolf. "You don't think they will aim for me first do you, seeing as I am still rather new and an easy target?"

Shifting as the weight of her rider adjusted about in the harness Feathermist snorted. Of course they are going for us first, easy bonus targets easy points. Feathermist had been laughing through her reply reading her riders mind to follow after Darkwind. So maybe I will be clumsy enough that you wont get hit. Feeling the laughter spread through Chehero Feathermist bounded behind Darkwind, just barely missing tripping on a root that seemed to jut out from the ground. And whoever you see, aim strait for their shoulders. Try not to hit them in the head, and don't hit any wolf!

Miri mentally smacked her head when she heard that she was on the same team as Alister, the same Alister whom she thought was a crazy insane nutcase, the one who would shoot not only the other team, but his own teammates as well, and she was going to be one who was going to get shot. Miri heard Dark's annoyed voice say Shh... we have to be quiet to hear the rest of the instructions, or Riya will probably yell at us. Plus, he is, and probably is, a devoted White Shadow private, with lots of years of experience.

Mirisua sighed, and she mounted the tall dark black and blue wolf and rode off to where Alister was. Then, she said "Hello Alister and Twilight!" After greeting them, she said "So, how are we going to beat the other team? Any plans?" She kept one hand on the back of Darkwind, and the other was gesturing as she had been speaking. Then, she waved at Chehero, who was on her team. She turned back to Alister, waiting for the reply.

Darkwind stretched on the nice, hard ground. She couldn't wait for the long expected training paintball battle against New Eve and it only seemed reasonable for the fort to practice, even if they were outnumbered. When Miri had mounted, Dark trotted over to other leaders of their team, who would most likely be giving instructions, being more experienced."Greetings Twilight."

Looking outwardly bored by the entire situation, Shun leans forward just a bit on Nightshade's back. His team choice would have been obvious, offense. But, seeing the two team leaders to square it off with one another he starts thinking over the decision. Which one would prove the more entertaining team?

It is just a game you know. Not anything to really get exited about. Nightshade gives a languid stretch, eying the wolves casually. It would be interesting though, his rider did have that much right. Why don't you toss a coin, or whatever that phrase is and go with what it decides?

A coin, Nightshade? Just whose wolf have you been hanging around to capture that phrase from. Not waiting for the response, because really it wouldn't be that interesting, Shun goes back to weighing his options. Offense, or defense. Offense, defense. A tough choice given the outcome. After a short mental debate he nudges Nightshade towards Alister and Miriusa's wolves to join their group. Offense it was.

Nightshade sways his tail once as he heads towards the red-vested riders and their wolves, dipping low before his superiors. Twilight, Darkwind. Would Shun and I be welcomed to your team? A canine grin can't help but slip through. Oh this would be fun indeed.

Calla sat patiently through the instructions. Bah, defense. Calla hated defense, she always had, but somehow that was always where she ended up. Calla sighed inwardly, ah well it was probably because she never put up protest. And anyway, the thought of being able to shoot Alister without getting yelled at for once entertained her greatly. Oh yes, she adjusted her riffle and checked her pistols hanging from either leg, he would be going down today if she had to stalk him for miles to get in a good shot. And Team Leader, she could live with that indeed, even if she had to be partnered with Riya. She considered herself on friendly terms with the Lieutenant, but there was still the matter of why she had transferred, leaving a bit of a blocker in her relationship with her superior. Calla shook that from her head, she had to focus on the battle for now. Out of habit she ran her hand across the Ouroborus around her neck, every battle was another chance, every success was a new start, but you had to work to achieve it. Snorting and nodding at herself Calla glanced around here, the teams seemed relatively even, though smaller than she was used to. It was odd how the newer fort seemed to have more members than good ol’ White Shadow. Calla had always found that slightly curious, granted she would choose New Eve too, what with Shizuka always about, lurking over shoulders. Yes, she understood now why so many fled to New Eve instead. Granted New Eve had its own horrors to face, she knew that from experience.
Calla made note of her team, feeling the tension radiating from Evrian, she was no Outsider to the animosity between him and Alister. She could feel it radiating from both of them whenever they were near each other. Well she could always give the kid a shot at him.
Hey, Evrian.” Calla leaned over and whispered to the Private, “So long as I get first shot, shoot him to your heart’s content. He deserves it.” As she spoke she gestured towards Alister and winked at the Private. Settling back into her harness she made another glance over her team, picking out faces she knew. Other than Evrian and Riya it seemed Kibb Watts was on her team, but Alister had Chehero, Mirisua, and his Apprentice Jashua. Calla nodded, she liked those odds actually, they rather entertained her. With a smirk she relayed a message to WoodWhisp to send over to Twilight.

WoodWhisp nodded to Stardust as she settled down, he still showed her the due respect even in his groggy state. How did the woman do it? She always seemed to know where he was, even when he was most hidden. Then again, he hadn’t had a chance to scope out the best White Shadow hiding place since they’d transferred so he was probably easier to find.
Turning his eyes over his group he nodded, ignoring Calla’s leaning which was about to throw him off balance. Razzledrop, Cinderfrost, and of course Stardust. That would work rather well for him actually. WoodWhisp sighed as his examining of teams was cut short by Calla above addressing him, something about a message. With a sigh WoodWhisp sent back affirmation and turned to Twilight as she passed.
Calla would like to inform Alister that he’s going to look rather funny covered in white.” Why such jokes right now? WoodWhisp just knew Calla had it out to get the man, in any way she could. Anyway, good luck my dear. He added, winking to her before laying down to wait, almost unseating Calla as he did so.

Jashua grasped onto Alister rather awkwardly. He hand was still wrapped and stiff until it could heal properly, making it difficult to maintain her balance and still be able to handle her riffle. Thankfully her Patron’s mate had managed to get her a pistol that she could handle easier, granted she would have to reload more often but it was the price she had to pay. She knew her relationship with her Patron was already rather worn, she hadn’t exactly made a very good first impression after all. No, she couldn’t think about that, not right now anyway. She had to focus her attention on the battle at hand, if she didn’t she would surely earn another scolding from Alister. Keeping her mouth shut unless he asked her a question and overall just staying out of his way had become part of her daily routine. But it had seemed Wake had different ideas, staying close to her mother and constantly trying to show off and prove herself useful. She tried so hard it was difficult not to love her, but occasionally it had done nothing but irritate her Patron. And then of course there was the fact that she seemed to have it out for Alister since the day they had met.

Flame wake danced about in excitement, prancing around her mother and randomly breaking out into bursts of laughter.
We’re gonna take Daddy down aren’t we Mom! She insisted, glancing over at WoodWhisp before resuming her track around her mother, We can’t let him win this! She continued. Her grasp of the language was certainly getting better in leaps and bounds, even though she still seemed rather childish at times. Another lap around her mother, sticking her tongue out at WoodWhisp as she passed, only for her father to swat at her the next round. She danced out of his reach as her mother moved, following close, careful not to stray too far from Jash. FlameWake stuck close to her mother and her rider, but still failed to acknowledge the existence of Alister. She still carried a disdain for the man, he had hurt Jash! And she still remembered him being chased away from the cave by her Mother, and Daddy’s rider was always shooting at him or yelling at him for something. Bad man, bad man indeed! Scare her Jash like that, she couldn’t just let that stand! But Mommy wouldn’t let her attack, wouldn’t let her put the man in his place. So FlameWake settled for just ignoring him for now until Mommy couldn’t stop her from protecting her Jash from him!

Riya glanced impatiently at the other team, watching as they seemed to chat idly instead of moving out as she had gestured for them to do. Did she have to tell them to leave? Honestly, she thought that leaders were supposed to take control instead of waiting around for someone to tell them to do something... which she'd already done anyways. Maybe Riya was just a little impatient, but then again, she was always like this before a battle, real or not. However, she never spoke these thoughts outloud knowing the annoyance would pass soon.

WoodWhisp and Darkwind, inform your riders that they should start moving out and setting up formation outside, Stardust conveyed to the two wolves, annoyed with all her human's ranting. Now shut up.

Yes, Mistress, Riya responded good-heartedly, glancing over slightly as Calla spoke to Evrian. But the Captain paid no attention, not too concerned about what went on privately between the men (and women) - well, that wasn't entirely true but she was in her 'battle mode' and she never mixed business with pleasure. Besides, there would be time to find out what new gossip was going around later. Love triangle?

Glancing back at her group and then Calla's to make sure everyone was present, Riya then turned to the New Eve transfer. "Since you seem to be well acquainted with Alister," she began with a soft smirk, though she kept her voice low so the offensive groups would not overhear, "Any insights into what he might do? And perhaps an effective counterattack?"

We look forward to seeing what new methods your human can bring, Stardust informed WoodWhisp, tail swishing impatiently as she leered at the wolves in the opposing team to intimidate them into leaving. Riya's annoyance was starting to get to her.

That was true enough, Riya thought of Stardust's words. Since this might just give them yet another advantage in tomorrow's battle against New Eve, to have one of their own. Oh yes, Riya was going to knock Damien down from his wolf tomorrow - and she would jump him herself to do it.

Paintball. Paintball. I can almost sing! /You are singing Vala, and its annoying./ Well sooorry, Miss Killjoy! Tapping her finger's on the paintball gun as they walked through the snow, the Private balanced the object across her shoulders in a habitual fashion. One of the few training sessions that she absolutely enjoyed, and didn't completely foul up at, mock battles were a true pick-me-up. "Hmmhmmhmhm!" Humming vocally instead of mentally, Vala smiled as she drew closer to the gathering group of Riders, flashing her Apprentice a smile as they arrived. It looked as though they had arrived just in time to hear their Riya explain who is who and what is what. /Are we offensive?/ No we're defensive! /Boring./ Oh so not boring. /Yes. Boring. All you do is wait to sense the attack coming, and when it does you lay down fire at anything that moves. Being on the attacking side is more fun./ Oh give it a chance!

Taking a few steps forward as Riya dismissed the other group, the short woman happily sidled up next to Calla and the rest of the combined Defensive groups, her Wolf trailing behind. "Greetings Lieutenant Riya, Calla." She gave an awkward salute, given the fact her paintball gun rested arcoss her shoulders. "Private Vala here for the kicks and giggles. Sorry I was a wee bit on the late side... The Doctor kept me hogtied to the table so I wouldn't skedaddle before he could check on my gash. Couldn't keep me though." She tended to rattle on when she was excited, quite the opposite of when she wasn't. "Er. Sorry." A sheepish grin spread across her face, her apology was indeed sincere.

Glancing back at Feathershroud, the Private bit the side of her lip. Although she herself was dressed and ready for the game, her Wolf stuck out like a sore thumb in a room of white. Too bad she couldn't dress Feather up in all white... though the broach she wore was easily enough removed her color was not.

Dark nodded to Stardust. "Yes Ma'am. Sorry for making you and Riya wait." Dark said to Miri urgently, Let's go go go! We have to get this battle training started! No time to waste! Get a move on! Before we get screamed at! while nudging Miri gently with her muzzle to her side to get mounted. In a hurry, she scooped up the paint gun as well while Miri got settled into the harness. There you go! Now off we go! Dark said to Miri as she got the gun from gently between her teeth to Miri's awaiting hands, somewhat proud of not breaking it and not covering it with too much wolf saliva.

Miri sighed as she was urged onto the harness. "Come on group, we have to be out of their hearing range before we get demoted!"On a more quieter voice, she said "Or so Darkwind here says! Eww Dark, now my paintball gun is all wet!" She could sense the annoyance that Darkwind put into the words as she said Not my fault, you're too slow.Although Miri was infuriated with Dark for being so pushy and bossy, but she did kind of want to get out of the clearing as soon as possible in fear that she would get shot in the back while not looking. She sighed as she was lead away on Darkwind. She loved the feeling of the wind in her hair, at the speed and freedom of being outside of building,s the chill in the winter air as she started planning for their attack.

Still bouncing slightly in light excitement, the black wolf gave a happy near purring growl as she regarded her teammates happily. Quite a few experienced wolves and riders and a few newbies as well. Tail swaying slowly she chuckled at the annoyed mental growl from Alister. She was going to enjoy this little battle, as for her rider, she wasn't so sure he'd enjoy the experience. Paintball had always been one of the more amusing times for her. Alister had always hated it of course mostly because he eternally complained about how hard the paint was to get out of his hair whereas she'd simply curled up to watch him whine while she snickered. Now she could tell he was going to hate the experience even more.

Dipping her head in greeting to each of the wolves, she gave a slight grin as she regarded Nightshade. Of course you'd be welcome. I don't think Darkwind objects to more teammates...? It was a slight question as her tail flicked again and she began to move off hearing the command from Stardust. Bowing her head to her alpha she couldn't help but chuckle at WoodWhisp as he passed and FlameWake as she scurried circles around her. A soft snort came as she considered the message and the response that followed.

I rather not relay that particular response right now. Chuckling once again in amusement she shook her head as she passed the white and orange wolf. Good luck to you as well. she said drifting past on her way out of the clearing. Tilting her head at her daughter Twilight merely grinned. Come along dear. Of course your father won't be winning this one. she purred tail wagging slowly.

There was a slight twitch in Alister's shoulder as he eyed the team that had assembled near him. Calla's comment only managed to annoy him further, the woman knew how inexperienced most of the privates he'd been handed were, which would prove to be a disadvantage that he would have to help make up for. Sighing a bit he tightened his grip on the wolf's harness as she started to move again, this time out of the clearing and into the forest to their starting point.

Plans would be worked out along the way but for the most part he would leave them to their own devices. If only to see what they were capable of.

Looks like we're finally going....

At his wolf's irritable statement, Christian glanced up out of his trance and straightened himself out as he realized he had been leaning against Spirit to prevent himself from slouching as he nodded off for a bit. The two had been standing off to the side, having arrived on the outskirts of the forest a bit early as they waited for the other teammates to show up. Adjusting the red vest as he examined the gathered Pivates, Christian noted that most were fairly younger than he was and that a good portion of the inexperienced riders were on the offense. The man had deftly considered joining the defensive side, given his pacifist nature, but reconsidered as he remembered from past experience that both sides would be under equally heavy fire.

About time... Christian responded as he slung his gun over his shoulder before pulling himself onto the blood-stained wolf. How he had gotten the kill-joy to come out to the training session today was a miracle in its own right. Of course, SpiritPlague wasn't expected to come to friendly terms with his teammates just for the occasion, considering most of the corresponding wolves seemed to be up-beat females. So long as no stray paintballs came across Spirit's path, everything would go smoothly.

Try not to do anything drastic this time. I don't think Stardust will take kindly to two screw-ups in the same month.

Spirit snorted disdainfully as he slowly followed after the wolves entering the forest. Try not to flirt with the opposing team this time. I don't think Riya will have any qualms against having you castr--

I'd like to go without the mental images, thank you...
