Stomach growling for the umteenth time, Nevara stopped to nibble from a nearby patch of grass. She suspected that her companion must be getting sick of her constant hold ups. Though he had yet to voice them. "I'm sorry, Tai. My stomach just can't seem to get enough." She nabbed a few more leaves as she fought to pull herself from the bushes. Of course, she had yet to tell him that she wasn't just gaining useless weight, but was indeed pregnant. Yes, she felt bad for deceiving him like this, but she felt that it would be better off for the both of them if she kept it to herself until the event actually happened.
She looked up reluctantly from the bush and smiled wirily at Taigi. Slowly she put distance between herself and her chosen snack this eve. It was once again chilly and the earth was again frozen, but what choice did she have? Her legs and back were aching and it felt like she was carrying moving basket balls around with her 24/7.
Though this time of year seemed to bring death too nature, the life inside her was proof that good could come from it. "Maybe ve should stop for a little vhile? My legs are killing me.." She carefully chose a spot not to open and yet also not to enclosed and lowered herself slowly to the ground.

Walk ten steps. STOP. Several feet more. STOP.
Taigi couldn't entirely understand Nevara's newfound gluttony, but he went along with it even though the intervals at which they made brief rest stops were getting ridiculous. He found himself forcing the corners of his mouth up at her little apologetic comments rather than giving her genuine, accepting smiles. Of course, he cared for Nevara greatly, but anyone would get annoyed with this interruptive traveling.
Snow embraced the tops of trees once more, and the ground was hard and solid. They were indeed in a mountainous region, but he knew this cold was the arrival of winter. His eyes scanned the clear blue sky. No eagle soared, no cloud dared enter this territory. But Nevara began walking once more, and his attention shifted back to her. His vision locked on her stomach, as it did often these days. She gained so much weight... Was it even possible for an equine to look as she did? It couldn't be healthy.
Yet there was a strange feeling that sent shivers down his spine whenever he looked at it too long. He could have sworn he'd seen it moving, but it must've been his imagination.
Then the beautiful blue mare, graceful despite her weight, asked to stop. He stopped immediately, wanting to accommodate her, and lay beside her so as to preserve their warmth, his legs folding beneath him and a sigh escaping his chest. "Of course, Nevvy."

Even though he seemed to be calm at the moment, Nevara did notice that his forced smile. And for some reason it hurt the pit of her stomach thinking that he was irritated with her. But why did it bother so much? She was just so emotionally lately and tired as of late and these last couple of days the pain had kicked in. Not a constant pain, but one that would peek it's head in and then disappear, only to reappear later on.
She let out a breath she hadn't noticed she was holding as Taigi curled up next to her. She propted herself against his side, laying her against him for comfort even as her stomach seemed to be kicking her to death. "I hope this is alright. It's just.... very comfortable."
The comfort of laying against him last a few more moments. It was only logical to seek shelter while they rested and relaxed. "It might be good to find a place slightly varmer." She forced herself up to her knees and slowly and awkwardly lifted herself and the extra wait to her hooves. When was this going to be over with? she let out a sigh as she waited for Tai to join her and lead the way. But what would I tell Tai when it was?

He stiffened ever so slightly as Nevara's skin came in contact with his own. "Yes, Nevvy." Taigi exhaled. His breath had a tendency of losing its inevitable, usual pattern around Nevara for a reason unknown to even himself. He didn't notice that she, herself, was holding her breath. "Of course it's alright, Nevvy." Awkwardly, he stretched his neck and nuzzled her cheek. He pulled away quickly, however, with a flush of red tinting his cheeks that matched well to Nevara's tail hair.
She began to rise, and he was quick to pull himself to his hooves, eager to help her up. These pounds she'd gained weren't suiting her well. It wasn't the altering of her shape as much as the discomfort it seemed to cause his friend. He shuffled his hooves, wishing he could do something, but gave up quickly and trotted a way away towards the thicket ahead. A couple of lengths down, he turned back towards her, eager to find a suitable temporary home. They'd need a place to rest. Of course.
He caught the look on her face instantly, even though her bangs were brushed across her eyes by the wind ever so slightly. She looked like she was thinking hard about something. Maybe even nervous. But maybe it was just the discomfort of her stomach. "Well, this way, then." He gave her another smile, this one encouraging, and tilted his head towards their unknown destination.

Nevara had almost forgotten she was holding her breath to wait for Taigi's answers. With his answer, she slowly released it with a sigh of relief. She was almosting beginning to think she was becoming a burden on him. And in the back of her mind it nawed at her.
She smiled warmly, taking in the feel of his muzzle against her neck for the slightest moment. Wait, why was she savoring such a simple gesture she had shared with countless others? Why did it somehow feel different with him?
When she managed to steady herself on her hooves, she followed as quickly as she could after Taigi. Her mind was racing with thoughts that continued to swim in her head. How would she bring up the subject in the first place? He just seemed so oblivious to the situation. It was as if he had never seen or been around a pregnant mare before. She guessed that was a stupid question. It probably would have made the comming conversation a bit easier.
"Taigi?" she said softly catching up to him. Pale eyes scanning his fascial features as she thought of a way to bring up her thoughts and tell him they were no longer going to be traveling alone. And as if sensing her distressed of the subject, and letting her know she wasn't alone, she received a swift kick in the side by the no longer calmness in her large stomach. That nudge seemed to bring her out of her daydream and back to reality and the more she thought about it, the more she decided this moment wasn't right. "Umm.. do you have an idea of a good place to stay?" Just a bit longer. "

Taigi was left staring at her in confusion. She was definitely laboring over something and it disturbed even him now, giving him an uneasy feeling in the pit of his stomach. What was she hiding from him? He shuffled his hooves once more, thinking this over until she joined him, then proceeded in walking at a brisk pace.
When she spoke, his head whipped about with eager curiosity and the relieving prospect of the weight on his "spirits" being lifted. However, she trailed off, apparently giving it another thought, then sent his shoulders slumping with what seemed like a last-minute change of heart. Taigi sighed, casting his eyes to the sky. She couldn't tell him something. But what?
They've been journeying together with no secrets, and rarely was there a spot of time for privacy. He let his mind trace every step of their adventure so far. Every detail was there. Every detail except... His heart thrummed nervously at that intoxicated evening he couldn't recall. Remembering his lack of memory hollowed out his stomach and his breath caught again for a moment, what could've possibly happened then? Does Nevvy remember? Did I do something shameful....?
He shook his head. It couldn't be.
Taigi turned back to Nevara, giving her a slight smile, "I believe we're near a cliff side. I'm sure we can find shelter in an abandoned cave or such." He nodded in the general direction of a clearing ahead, over which towered a gray, jagged structure that appeared to be the base of a cliff. "It won't be too far now." His smile remained reassuring, yet his eyes were uneasy. What did happen that night?

With her head and heart at conflicting ends she couldn't wait until they reached they're destination. She knew in her head that he wouldn't be ready, but in her heart it killed her to be hiding such a big, life changing secret from the friend she had grown to admire and respect more everyday.
More stretching and another kick had her pause and close her eyes briefly to compose herself. "Sorry, I guess all that extra food isn't sitting well." A quick and logical explanation for it, but also another lie. How much longer would she have to keep this up? Her head was being to ache with the stress of all the turmoil.
"Thank goodness! I can finally rest" She sighed contently and moved along behind Taigi.

Dusk was gaining on them. By the time they'd crossed the clearing, the sky was a grayish indigo, the sunset making a halo around the horizon from which they'd traveled. Nevara's stomach provided a grumbling tune to accompany their hoofbeats and Taigi was grateful for the distraction. He couldn't think straight with this much outside noise, and he didn't want to.
Whenever he glanced back at Nevvy, she seemed to be suffering, staggering at a far slower pace. He, naturally, slowed for her. If not concerned about Nevara's well being and getting them to a suitable shelter soon, he would have admired the scenery. The grass rose to their ankles, soft and lively green in color. The forest from which they'd come now overshadowed them, crowned with the bright oranges and pinks of sunset. An early owl swept down upon its prey, snatching a field mouse in its talons. 'Beautiful...' And then his eyes wandered over Nevvy once more, with her misshapen stomach and weary eyes. 'Indeed...' He sighed, his neck swiveling back around to face the gigantic slate of stone.
The cave that was their original destination was ideal, Taigi noticed with relief. It was voluminous and didn't stretch to further inner-caverns where dangerous animals might thrive. Stalactites hung from the ceiling and connected to the ground, but they didn't appear threatening. So, without further hesitation, Tai lead Nevara inside. "This'll do."

Nevara blinked and focused on the cave enterance before them. "It's perfect!" She said, not really caring what kind of shelter it was, as long as she got to stop. It appeared they were getting more and more anxious as time went on and her poor legs just couldn't hold herself up any longer. As she step past the threshold it was a cool breeze that was there to greet her. With the sweat beading on her brow it was a much welcomed change of pace.
Her head cocked to look back at Taigi as she settled down next to the wall, using it to prop herself against. It looked to her as he was just as unsettled by all of this as she was. And he looked to only be getting worse. Perhaps it was best to send him off for a while until after? Or should she just come out and say it? Taigi I'm not fat, I'm pregnant! No, definitely not a smart idea.
"Taigi?" she called to him softly, shifting her hooves to the side. "Is there anyway for you to find something to ease these cramps? A herb or insect or something?" She knew none of these would help at this point. But it would give her time to think of a logical explaination and hopefully recover enough to think more clearly.

As Nevara entered the cave, exclaiming her satisfaction with the cave, Taigi stood outside. He was tensing by the second, every sliver of nightfall, every increment of darkness in the sky bringing with it a new concern. But, looking back at Nevara, he knew they'd be safe. She'd be safe.
And nothing beyond that matters...?
Taigi's thoughts grew deeper, examining this curious thought. So it was only natural Nevvy's soft call set his ears perked upright and a shiver running down his back, straightening it. He turned to face her like clockwork with a tight smile. Realizing how strange he must've looked, he inhaled and relaxed, doing his best to convey that he was fine. They were fine. She was fine.
More so natural was the submission to her plea for him to fetch her something to cure a pain in her bowels. Without touching her or approaching her to nuzzle her neck comfortingly - something he'd regret sooner than later - he was off after speaking said submission.
And what did Taigi know of herbs? Barely anything. True, he was a traveler, but he wasn't as aged and wise as someone like his mother must be. Herbs and remedies were far on his list of 'things to discover'. So, of course, he was quite the fool running this errand. But he wouldn't come back without the herbs! It simply would not do. He would try every damn plant about him to see if any had calming tendencies and return to Nevara victorious. Nodding his wisdom, though it was in fact stupidity and impulse, Tai went about nibbling at a stalk there, a leaf here until...
Eyes widening, he felt the blood in his veins grow slow and lazy. This would've been quite the plant to help calm Nevara, but the calming effect of this particular herb was one to drive even a stallion determined as Taigi into a deep and peaceful slumber. All thoughts of worry drifted from Tai's mind and he crumbled in the lull that should have encompassed his dear companion instead, gone until at least next noon.
