Green, Fassel, Haslett to coach in new league
By RACHEL COHEN, AP Sports Writer Mar 11,
Former NFL coaches Dennis Green, Jim Fassel and Jim Haslett will lead teams in the new United Football League.
The league plans to debut in October with four teams in San Francisco, Las Vegas, Orlando and New York.
“This will be awesome,” Fassel said on a conference call Wednesday. “It’s pure coaching—players that want to get better, players that want to develop. A lot less of the other stuff that’s always involved when you’re an NFL coach.”
Ted Cottrell, a former defensive coordinator for the Chargers, Vikings, Jets and Bills, will coach the New York franchise.
Fassel, who led the Giants to the Super Bowl after the 2000 season, will coach Las Vegas. Green, the former Vikings and Cardinals coach, will be in San Francisco. Haslett, the ex-Saints coach who served as the Rams’ interim coach this past season, will be in Orlando.
UFL games will be played outdoors using NFL rules. The goal is to sign players who just missed making NFL rosters. Players will be able to sign with NFL teams after the short season, which is scheduled to end Thanksgiving weekend, but not during it.
“So much of what we do is about developing players and developing coaches,” Green said.
Teams are scheduled to play games in Hartford and Los Angeles along with the home markets. The league also announced that the San Francisco franchise will play games at AT&T Park.
The four coaches insisted they weren’t looking to use the new league as a launching pad to return to the NFL. UFL commissioner Michael Huyghue, a former Jaguars and Lions executive and agent, said the league plans to eventually offer competitive coaching salaries to the NFL.
“This league, in general what attracted me to it was the people running it,” Haslett said.

This is a great idea. It would be a perfect way to develop a farm league for the NFL. Be able to develop those who either miss rosters, are walk-on people for those who want to play but have to give a show first and for those who just want to play for themselves.
Though I remember something like this being talking about a while back. They were talking about putting in place a sub-league for those who are not able to get into the big universities or for those who want to go enter the draft but have not finished their full degree's for education. The target of that is to make sure they dont leave school early and they finish up their education so in case they have a career ending injury, they have something to fall back on.

Lol. Farm League. They don't want to be a farm league. Just like the Arena Football League. That's not a farm league. NFL Europa is a farm league.
I hope this UFL can compete with the NFL. That would be very interesting..... VERY VERY Interesting.... Strange things would happen. Lol.
I doubt it'll be very successful though... NFL is just too big of a monster to topple.

I am just saying with the doors this new league will open, it very well could end up being a farm league. Besides, the way things go between the NFL and the AFL, the NFL is more of a farm league for the AFL than vice versa. Those that dont make it in the NFL, they go to the AFL smile ). I am just wondering if the UFL is what they were talking about when I read up on something that was like this. But yeah, if they can compete with the NFL, it would be extremely interesting. We need to hope though that this doesnt turn into something like the XFL was.

Austin Shipp xfl was a joke, the only differnce between this and a farm league is these guy are unsigned by nfl teams. farm league teams are run by MLB teams so players are already owned by teams There was an article recently printed in my city about the farm league for the MLB. I will look for that article if it is possible. But anyways, only about half of the minor leagues are owned by any of the MLB teams. It maybe even less than half. But the Phillies just bought majority share in the Minor League team over here. Back 30 or so years ago, the minor league teams were mostly owned by the MLB, but that changes as teams started thinking that they were a drain on the clubs money. That has started to change as the realization that the minor league sytem is bringing in more money than expected and that they could have a greater say in their players and their training/development. That is why I am saying it might be a good thing if this kind of turned out to be a minor league system.

Hm... Interesting to say the least. I'd like to see what this becomes.. Also, only four teams, weird. But yes, this is probably going to be another farm league, and I'd like to watch it over the AFL most likely, I hate AFL.

If they do well, they add more teams. If not, they either get bought out or they go under. It all depends. And hey, AFL aint that bad. Just very different.

I mean it does seem that it is nothing but a NFL reject, but even rejects can be fun.

NFL rejects... >_> I think the AFL is much more difficult than what the NFL does. It goes at such a faster pace, you need to read defenses a lot faster. One little mistake is not so little in the AFL.
Kurt Warner. One simple name. Lol. Iowa Barnstormers.

Speaking more of the AFL, has there been any more news if they are going to suspend the 2009 season? As for the UFL, my biggest question is that with the financial condition everyone is in, how are they able to afford this or who is doing the financial backing for the league?

This is very interesting. An entirely new football league. It will help some players develop, to possibly turn pro and go to the NFL. But it's weird, because a few of the coaches you mentioned are fit to have a top-level NFL coaching job.
The UFL will take a hit because of the economy, like the AFL and NFL did. The AFL is exciting, but had to disband their season this upcoming year, because of financial struggles. The UFL might have to do the same eventually, if things get worse.
